FEBRUARY LAUDER JAVNE JEWISH COMMUNITY SCHOOL, KINDERGARTEN AND MUSIC SCHOOL BUDAPEST, HUNGARY HAPPY 29TH BIRTHDAY LAUDER SCHOOL! We celebrated our school’s birthday on the second week of February. The real celebration was held on the last two days of that week, but the students could participate in preliminary tasks, the usual Mosaic Day was held on Wednesday before the celebrations. On the birthday party days there were group competitions for both the elementary and secondary school. At the end of the event everyone had a great birthday party together and the small ones ate birthday cakes with the high school students. Just like the previous years, during the birthday programs, we have not forgotten to collect money we can donate to the Dóri House, and to express our support we all dressed in red on the closing day of the birthday. We closed the week - and thus the birthday - with lighting the Shabbat candles together.

ANOTHER LAUDER SUCCESS AT AN ISRAELI MUSEUM

One of the photos of Horváth Benjamin (7th grade) was selected for the Beit Hatfutsot International Jewish Lens Photo Competition (Diaspora Museum, Tel Aviv).Thousands of Jewish teens from all over the world send their photographs to the Diaspora Museum’s Jewish Lens competition every year. Each year, a jury selects the best photos received and presents them at an exhibition. This year Benjamin Horváth’s photo taken at the Unified Hungarian Jewish Congregation (EMIH) Chanukah candle

lighting was also selected. Benji said that he was making photos together with the LauderEye’s team at the Chanukah on Ice event at the City Park Ice Ring on the day when this picture was taken. “After all, this was the task, and I just tried. I wouldn’t have thought that my photo would get selected for the exhibition.”This partnership program will continue this April.

MORIM PROJECT

Our American exchange program continued in February: Seven of our col-leagues in the SOS International Morim program spent the first week of February at The Adelson Educational Campus in Las Vegas following the US school teachers visit at Lauder last November. They taught, examined their educational programs, gained much experience. The trip was very useful, and three participants even had the opportunity to start discuss the next steps of the exchange program.

ANNE FRANK TRAVELING EXHIBIT IN THE LIBRARY

In February, a special exhibition was waiting for the students in our library: the Read and Write with Anne Frank Traveler Exhibit. The students visited the exhibition as part of their their Hungarian Literature and Jewish Studies lessons. Many of them borrowed Anne Frank’s diary after viewing the exhibition.

STUDENTS AND PARENTS EVALUATED THE LAUDER TEACHERS

This year students and parents were asked to evaluate our teachers once again. Overall 502 students and 335 parents took part in this procedure.

All feedbacks are very helpful, so we are very happy that so many people have expressed their opinion this year.

BIBLE COMPETITION

Zsófi Bojtor and Noémi Horváth from the 10th grade achieved a prestigious place in the Hungarian Bible Competition, giving them the opportunity to participate at Israeli Finals in May.

WELCOMING ROMA STUDENTS AT LAUDER

Six 17-18-year-old Roma students and one of their teachers came to our school for a visit from Sajókaza. Gábor Deák (member of the Board of Trustees) welcomed them, introduced them the Lauder school, and then they had a discussion with our Principal. The visit ended with a lunch at the school restaurant.

OPEN COURT PROGRAM

In this academic year, the 9th graders had the opportunity to take part in this program. The program consisted of the following elements:In the first semester Dr. Zoltán Gebe Judge visited us. Our students received a brief introduction on the legal aspects of issues affecting them, and then they could raise questions. After that, they had an opportunity to participate in a public hearing, followed by case simulations involving the processing of some fictitious cases in a negotiating frame, involving the students in an interactive way.The students worked on the cases of Éva Gyalog and Pál Kerék; the

DEMOCRACY GAME

As in the previous years, this year our students participated again at the Parliamentary Democracy Game in the Hungarian Parliament. This time, as a government party, we proposed an amendment to lower the legal voting age to 16 in Hungary. As a government party, with 20 representatives of the “Society of Autumn” our students tried to prove with arguments, sources, and statistical data, how beneficial would this be for us, just like it was for Austria and Brazil.Unfortunately, at this event, the other three parties (other schools) did not prove to be appropriate partners, merely seeing the meaning of the Game’s task to contradict us without arguments. Thus, this proposal has not only been introduced at the parliamentary democracy game, just like in real life.

ÉVA UNGÁR’S SUCCESS AT THE ZRÍNYI ILONA MATHEMATICS COMPETITION

Éva Ungár won second place in the first round of the Zrínyi Ilona Mathematical Competition. In this competition the students have to solve 30 tasks in 90 minutes. It is not enough if someone is very smart and knows a lot; the competitors have to be very fast to be successful. Vica came second with 24 correct solutions and didn’t need much to get to the finals.
