conversations, and who knows, you might find

someone who is related to you.

home as long as the timing is on their schedule. If

you have questions, call us at 658-5198. We are

are welcome to attend, and all members and

associate members are needed to attend and are

eligible to vote.

On March 2 and 3 the VC will present a

Mystery Dinner Theater, Who’s Cookin’?. Join us

in the SMR/DR at 5:30 p.m. for a delicious dinner

where three celebrity chefs including Patty Deen,

Gordy Whimsey, and Rochelle Ray will battle to

lead their teams to victory. Teams will fight for

votes but, when the coveted grand prize starts

slipping away, will the mischief of self-absorbed,

win-at-all-costs celebrities bring the evening‟s

events to a halt? Or will YOU help solve the

mystery and crown the true victor? Tickets cost

$10 and are available Mon.-Fri. at the church office.

Seating is limited, so get your tickets soon!

MEMBER SERVICES Ann Thompson – 658-5400

On Thur., Jan. 25, Linda Wotton will be honored at

a reception from 2:30-4:30 p.m. in the DH lobby.

Linda and Larry Wotton moved from ME to

Dowling Park twenty years ago to accept positions

as the Housing Managers at DH. Linda and Larry

worked together for many years in those positions.

We wish Linda a happy retirement and thank her for

her years of dedicated service. We look forward to

seeing her enjoying retirement here in Dowling

Park.

If you were not able to attend the tax update

presentation, it will be available on TV-2, or you

can pick up copies of the handout at Member

Services.

If you missed the Madison Travel Program, you

can pick up the trip information at Member

Services.

Just a reminder – bus trip sign-ups are

important so that we can plan appropriately. The

policy of Member Services is to cancel a trip if

there are fewer than ten persons signed up twenty-

four hours prior to the trip. The exception would be

for off-campus artist series events if a smaller

vehicle could accommodate those signed up. If

Member Services cancels the trip, a refund will be

made.

Member Services Tip of the Week

As you may have heard in the media, we are in a

very severe flu season. Health care professionals

advise that if you have not had a flu shot, you get

one now. The vaccine is still available at the

Village Pharmacy and Medicare covers the cost of

the vaccine.

NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS

BUTTERFIELD ACRES Brenda Reas, Reporter

We wish a happy birthday to Wayne Casey on Jan.

28 and Dorothy Morey on Jan. 31.

The BA potluck dinner was well-attended and

the food was scrumptious as always. We played

some guessing games, a few won door prizes, and

everyone had a good time.

A friend of mine took her five-year-old girl to

church every Sun. morning. Her mother always

told her, “We are visiting God's house.” One Sun.

morning in the pew, the little girl asked in a loud

voice, “How come God's never home!” (From

Holy Humor by Cal and Rose Samra.)

Please send news to [email protected] or

DACIER MANOR We have had all types of weather for sure - cold,

warm, sunshine and rain! No wonder people get

sick! Let‟s all stay healthy now! Wash your hands,

wash your hands, WASH YOUR HANDS! We are

saddened by the death of Sheila Wallace, who

passed on Jan. 15 at the Haven Hospice Center in

Lake City with her family at her bedside. We

extend our sympathy to Sheila‟s family. Sheila

moved to DM last March from CH via GSC. We

also extend our sympathy to Karen and Paul Balfour

in the passing of Karen‟s dad, Barney Stoffel, on

Mon. morning. Barney lived at DM for a year and a

half before moving to GSC this past July. What

great lives both Sheila and Barney had!

We appreciated Chris Skinner, son of Dean and

Deb Skinner, speaking to us about his mission work

in Brazil. Thank you, Chris! We have had several

birthdays this month, so let me catch you up.

Happy birthdays to: Ethel Wheeler (Jan. 2), Dean

Spradley (Jan. 13), Dr. Fred Mickler (Jan. 14),

and upcoming: Helen Setchfield (Jan. 29) and

Peggy Howland (Jan. 31). Staff birthdays include:

Crystal Delcastillo and Tresca Walker (Jan. 12),

Brittany Franks (Jan. 14), and Renee Pope (Jan.

19). Happy birthday to ALL!

As always, we appreciate our many visitors:

Barb Bizbie (Jane Bonning and Alice Masterson),

Jennifer Markham, Lisa Pitts (Jan Fraley), Jack

and Marcie Parker, Chuck Eckel, Diane Law, Mel

and Mar Parker, Paul and Cathy Wiggin, Vaughan

and Genie Early, Ivan and Edye Rowell (Elvena

Johnson), Sophia Howland (Peggy Howland),

Wilson (Joyce Thompson).

My SHOUT OUT this week is to DM staff!

While I was out for a couple of weeks, Crystal,

Nikki, and the team kept things moving right along

as usual with Keri Hilliard‟s support! You all are

the greatest! I have said it more than once and am

sure will continue to praise your work, teamwork,

and love for our residents! Thank you again from

the bottom of my heart!

DOWLING HOUSE Janice Chapman, Reporter

DH residents invite you to attend a retirement

reception honoring Linda Wotton, who is retiring

after 20 years of service as the Manager of DH.

The reception will be held in the DH lobby on

Thur., Jan. 25, from 2:30-4:30 p.m.

Happy birthday to Angie Cruciata, whose

birthday is on Jan. 31. We trust she will enjoy her

special day.

Gladys Ezell reports that she had a special

Christmas with family. Barbara took her to Macon,

GA, to visit her niece, Debbie. They went to

Atlanta to get her niece, Teri, who was coming from

Los Angeles. After spending the night in Atlanta,

they went to Debbie‟s home in Flat Rock, NC for

8

8

several days before going to her daughter,

Courtney‟s, home in Taylor, SC. She visited Harold

and Donna, her brother and sister-in-law, for several

days before going to visit her nephew, Matt and

Leah Harbour for a day. She enjoyed watching

their two little boys play with all their toy trains and

cars. They enjoyed several nice shopping centers

and eating places. Jeff and Debbie brought her

home on their way for a week‟s vacation in south

FL. She enjoyed being with everyone and is

grateful she got to see so many of them. As always,

it was great to go, but good to get back home to the

Village – a special place to live.

EDGEWOOD TERRACE Dick Barkley, Reporter

One of our ET neighbors, Russ Terjung, is featured

on ACV‟s current website. When you pull up

ACVillage.net, click on North Florida Senior

Living, and scroll to the bottom right corner to see

Russ as he gleefully builds up his shoulder muscles

at the CCC.

Please keep Chet Carlson in your prayers, as

he is battling a new health problem.

Only one birthday during the coming week, as

Sarah Sisk will be greeting a new number on Jan.

31.

Deer continue to make regular visits to lawns of

Millsite Lane homes. Fairly often, Clara will see a

few in our yard around 4:00 or 5:00 a.m. However,

Rosemary Patterson informed us that she saw six

in front of our house about 11:00 p.m. a few nights

ago.

Although I must confess that I really like eating

venison, I would never even think about killing one

of those beautiful creatures now. As a teenager,

almost seven decades ago, I killed one and I felt so

very, very terrible afterwards.

My dear wife had a close encounter at night

with quite a large deer back about 1980. I have

accused her of trying to make sausage out of it, for

she knocked it forward and then ran over

it. Thankfully we had a large, heavy Grand Torino

back then, and not a tiny vehicle as we now own.

PARK OF THE PINES Bob Reynolds, Reporter

Jeanne Grover has a birthday on Mon., Jan. 29, so

be aware of her day, but don‟t be frightened, as she

seems pretty docile whenever I‟ve been in her

presence. She can be found frequently at the Deli in

the mornings, so maybe, just maybe, she‟ll tell you

some stories about serving as a missionary in Peru

for many years. But, you have to ask her, as she is a

pretty quiet lady. Have a happy day, Jeanne.

As you already know, there are no

anniversaries in the POP this week, but maybe next

week will be rich with them. Nobody gets married

in the winter months? Well, I suppose that driving

away from the church in the cold with the top down

and having the wind blowing in your face while

wiping the confetti out of your hair as you speed

away is not particularly a dream start. Or is it rice,

to be environmentally correct?

The following is from The Book of Virtues by

William J. Bennett:

Mr. Meant-To has a comrade, and his name is

Didn‟t-Do.

Have you ever chanced to meet them? Did they ever

call on you?

These two fellows live together in the house of

Never-Win,

And I‟m told that it is haunted by the ghost of

Might-Have-Been.

This little poem was preceded by Benjamin

Franklin‟s thoughts about putting off until

tomorrow that which you can do today. Being a

procrastinator, it works for me! As they say, one

way to break a habit is to drop it. I‟ll think about it.

RIVER WOODS The RW Homeowner‟s Association will meet on

Wed., Jan. 31, at 3:00 p.m. at the CCC.

Cathy Mellinger reports that on Sat., Jan. 27,

the women who live on Hickory and Elmwood

Lanes plan to meet at the Village Café at 11:30 a.m.

This month they are meeting for lunch instead of

the usual breakfast time. They are looking forward

to seeing all of you there!

Alvin Fast passed away on Sat., Jan. 20, at the

age of 97. Alvin lived on River Birch and his wife,

Olga, spent a number of years in GSC where he was

very attentive to feed her and put her to bed each

night with prayer. They were missionaries in Cuba

for some time and always served the Lord together.

They have five sons and one daughter who all serve

the Lord.

“Good morning, Advent Christian Village

– this is Beverly!” I‟ve answered the telephone at ACV with this

greeting for over 20 years and I find myself

answering the telephone at home in the same way!

Amazing what repetition can do to you! I want to

say “thank you” to all the residents and staff whom

I have had the pleasure of knowing, becoming

friends with, and assisting for these past years.

You all have had a profound impact on my life and

I appreciate all the good wishes I have received. I

will miss seeing all of you regularly, but have no

9

fear – I‟ll be back – perhaps as a resident in the

future. Thank you, thank you, thank you,

especially for your good wishes and prayers! See

you later!

A MAN’S LAST HOME (The ballad of a homeowner soon moving to a

retirement community.)

By God‟s great grace, and at a leisurely pace,

I‟ve mowed my last lawn,

and painted my last space.

Through His mighty wisdom,

He‟s revealed the last weed,

That I‟ve located and dispatched,

with amazingly great speed.

By His merciful watch care,

I‟ve cleaned my last gutter

And now it‟s the time to retire – and just putter!

(Penned by Dick McClaine, of TC, just prior to his

move to ACV in April of 2015.)

What is Myth-Information?

Myth-Information is a widely held and/or promoted,

but false, piece of information.

MYTH: Medicare is health insurance and does

not cover end of life/ advance care planning.

FACT: Starting January 1, 2016, Medicare

began covering advance care planning as a separate

service provided by physicians and other health

professionals (such as nurse practitioners who bill

Medicare using the physician fee schedule).

Medicare now covers advance care planning

provided in medical offices and facility settings,

including hospitals. As with most other physician

services, beneficiaries are subject to cost sharing for

advance care planning provided by their physician

or health professional. If Medicare beneficiaries

desire advance care planning during their annual

wellness visit, physicians and other health

professionals may provide it during the visit and bill

Medicare separately for it. However, beneficiaries

will have not have any cost sharing liability for

advance care planning provided in conjunction with

their annual wellness visits.

Advance care planning involves multiple steps

designed to help individuals a) learn about the

health care options that are available for end-of-life

care; b) determine which types of care best fit their

personal wishes; and c) share their wishes with

family, friends, and their physicians. In some cases,

patients who have already considered their options

may need only one advance care planning

conversation with their physician. However, experts

state that frequently, beneficiaries may require a

series of conversations with their physician or other

health professionals to clearly understand and

define their end-of-life wishes.

ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS Alcoholics Anonymous meets in Dowling Park. For

THANK YOU Thank you to the people in this caring community

who have prayed, sent cards and goodies, and

visited me during my rehab from an accident during

the holidays and for the expressions of sympathy

after hearing about the loss of my sister this month.

Jim and I are truly blessed to be part of the loving

community in ACV. Dottie Frassetto

How can a heart be happy, sad and glad at the same

time?

My heart is very happy because of the many

friends and acquaintances whom my mother, Ray,

and I have acquired in the last 10 years. It was

overwhelming to have received so many cards, so

much food, and so many donations to the

benevolent fund in her memory that we hardly

know what to say. This is yet another confirmation

that we three made a good choice by moving to this

wonderful village.

My heart is sad because of the passing of my

mother, but with God's promise of knowing where

she is makes my heart glad. It is good that she is in

the “place of no mores.” No more death, no more

sorrow, no more crying, and no more pain as the

promise goes in Revelation 21:4, and we look

forward to seeing her again when our time comes.

Thank you all so much for being there! It

means so much! Be blessed and stay safe!
