In astrology, those born between the 1st and the 20th of April are Aries, the Ram. Rams are adventurous go-getters and full of enthusiasm, charm, and energy. Those born from the 20th to the 31st in April have the star sign of the Bull of Taurus. Bulls show steady, dogged persistence in achieving their goals, and enjoy being rewarded for that.

Yet there are even stranger Easter customs than bunnies and eggs. Instead of a bunny, Australia has an Easter bilby—a small, endangered, cat-sized desert marsupial, with a pouch like a kangaroo, that looks like a cross between a rabbit and a rat. Those in the Czech Republic bestow wishes of health and youth with pussy willow branches entwined in colorful ribbons. In the town of Vrontados, on the Greek island of Crete, two churches even engage in mock war. During Rouketopolemos, the “Rocket War,” the churches shoot hundreds of fireworks at each other. Surrounding homes are covered with boards and sheet metal for protection. Whichever church lands the most hits at the opposing church’s belltower wins. However, each year there’s a disagreement over the winner—and a vow to settle the score next Easter.

Humor may be one of the oldest and most effective methods of social bonding.

No matter what your culture or background, all laughter sounds the same.

Better yet, studies show that the more you laugh, the more attractive you

become to the opposite sex…or perhaps that is just a joke?

Most laughter doesn’t come from listening to jokes. Most laughter comes from

spending time with friends and family. Furthermore, people

tend to laugh more when they’re in groups. Laughter truly is contagious.

Doctors have become wise to the positive health effects of laughter. Laughter

has been shown to decrease blood pressure, improve the function

of blood vessels, increase blood flow, decrease hormones associated with

stress, and strengthen immune systems by increasing infection-fighting

antibodies. Laughter even reduces pain by stimulating the release of

endorphins. One doctor believes laughing is such good exercise that he calls it

“internal jogging.” One minute of laughing, he says, is equal to 10 minutes on

a rowing machine.

Laughter is not just good for the body; it’s also good for the mind. Humor

stimulates creativity, improves problem-solving abilities, enhances memory,

and teaches resilience. All April long, make sure to take “laugher breaks”

every day. Avoid the news and instead watch a sitcom or funny movie, read

the daily comics, perform a sight gag, tell a joke, play games, spend time with

children, and most importantly, do these things with friends. Hoot and holler

with reckless abandon and your body will thank you.

You may be laughing until it hurts, but that laughter is doing some powerful

healing. Pull up a chair next to the class clown or pull out some jokes of your

own, because April is Humor Month.

April’s special flower is the daisy, one of the oldest and best-

known

English flowers. The daisy’s name comes from the Anglo-Saxon

name day’s eye the center of the daisy looks like an eye, and

its

petals close at night.

In primi,ve ,mes, daisies were used as magical charms to heal

wounds

and treat gout, fevers, and insanity. The daisy also was

thought to change gray hair to

black. But, if that worked, we might all be growing daisies! For

centuries, this flower has

symbolized innocence. For example, a single daisy is o8en

used to “predict” ma>ers of love

when smi>en girls pull off a petal at a ,me and say, “He loves

me, he loves me not.
