MARCH Diary

Daffodils, with apology to Willy Wordsworth !

I rode down to the village shopHoof on tarmac, clip clop, clip clop,Suddenly a sight caught my eyeAs bright as any dawn lit sky

Two hundred golden daffodilsEach year, pleasure if I take the pills !They tossed their heads as traffic passedHappy and joyful, a spell they cast

For when I’m spent, slightly dozyOn my couch rested and cosyYear after year this bright lovely flowerBrings to memory, Barry Power.

Newshound

Peter and Marion Chute’s sonTom, who left Feckenham a year ago tolive in Australia, was married toHerefordshire born Rhiannon in Tasmania onNew Year’s Eve. They were married at LakeSt Clair in a renovated hydroelectric powerstation called Pump House Point, which isnow a small wilderness hotel. Tom happenedupon Pump House Point when travelling lastyear, just after it had opened. Those whohave seen the wedding photographs willappreciate the beauty and originality of thewedding venue. Tom and Rhiannon will nowbe travelling on towards Perth, via Adelaide, planning to finish their circumnavigation by2017.

While travelling in Australia, Peter andMarion called on ex FeckenhamstersSpencer and Brigette McCab attheir home in Copacabana, New SouthWales, where they are now well settled, butstill check on what is happening here via theFeckenham News. They thoroughly enjoyed their trip of alifetime to Australia and New Zealand, including stopping off in Singapore on theway out there, and in Sri Lanka on the wayback, and •have now safely returned to thedelights of living in Feckenham!

Sue and Graham Darby aredelighted to announce the arrival of their fifthgrandchild, Sebastian Edward, a brother forGeorgia, and son for Giles and Jo, theLeicestershire branch of the Darby family!

PS Many thanks to those who have left usedstamps in the village shop for the AlexandraHospital League of Friends, keep up the goodwork.

Poorly Postie Feckenham has beenfortunate enough to have been served by thesame hard working postman for over 30years - so we’re sorry to report that Nevilleis seriously ill in hospital. His colleagues tellus that he’s recovering but will be absentfrom his round for at least two months. We’re sure that villagers will want to sendtheir best wishes to Neville in the hope thathe’ll soon be well enough to return.

We also have to report the sad loss of EricStyler who passed away on 9th Februarythis year. He will be sadly missed and wesend condolences to his family.

Keeping St John the Baptist Church, as aBuilding at the Centre of Our Community:

An Appeal for Support.

“Hang on, isn’t that the job of theChurch?”

It can come as something of a surprise to thosethat don’t routinely get involved with the

running of the Church and its affairs that theupkeep of the Church building is a separate thingto what happens in it.

Organised Church activities, the Sunday servicesand worship, are the ultimate responsibility ofthe Church of England and the Bishop ofWorcester. However, the upkeep of the fabric ofthe building is actually the responsibility of thecommunity in which the building sits. In timespast, when we were all “Religious”, this wasn’t anissue. The upkeep of the building was simplytaken care of by the Chancery Repair Liability, atax effectively levied on landowners in the Parish. If you have been following the news, there havebeen a couple of celebrated cases of folks withland suddenly finding themselves liable for achurch repair bill – there was one in WoottonWawen, a few years back.

It may interest you to know that St John theBaptist, here in Feckenham had exactly thisarrangement. When the Parochial ChurchCouncil (PCC) looked into this, it found thatthere were indeed landowners who were liable, however many had since sold the land forhousing development. When we got to 2000households who were affected, we decided tostop counting. Can you imagine the task ofcollecting the levy? And that’s before we startmaking ourselves extraordinarily unpopular intrying to enforce it. So, the PCC decided to lapsethis claim on the good people of the Parish. Thiswas a decision we formalised last year.

The Church Building Challenge

That has now left the community with somethingof a challenge.

The brunt of the burden of the upkeep of thechurch building is currently falling to the faithfulfew in the congregation – about 45 on average,

weekly, and to the PCC to raise the maintenancefunds. The PCC over the years has been verygrateful for the bequests it has been left and thetriennial garden festival, which have kept the roofon. However, this is not sustainable, nor realisticin the long term.

There may well be those in the Parish whowouldn’t care if the church ultimately crumbled asa building, but we believe there is a substantialnumber in the village for whom that wouldrepresent an extraordinary loss. Whilst it is noteveryone’s idea of fun or indeed part of theirbeliefs, to attend regular services or to worship inan organised way, having a space for christenings, marriages, funerals, village celebrations and aspiritual place of sanctity and quiet that representsthe heart of the community of Feckenham, issomething very important to the life of this village.

“Friends of Feckenham Church CharitableTrust”; an Answer?

The proposal being progressed, is the creation ofa group called Friends of Feckenham Church, aCharitable Trust which will oversee grantapplications, fund raising and the giving of grantsto Feckenham PCC for the upkeep of the Churchbuilding and the Churchyard (as prioritised by theChurch Architect – yes, we have one), in order topreserve its use for the community in the future.

So, the punch line of this article is that we arelooking for a number of people to act as Trustees.Could that be you?

The Trust will be separate from the PCC, with anemphasis on lay and secular involvement.

We imagine the Trust meeting quarterly, withroles of Chair, Secretary and a Treasurer to befilled.

A Public Meeting: 24th March, 7.30pm,Feckenham Church

If you are interested potentially in gettinginvolved, or just curious and would like to find outmore, then we are proposing to have a publicmeeting. 24th March, 7:30pm, in the Church. There is a Trustees’ information pack you can gethold of in advance (and will be made available onthe day).

The people to make contact with and speak to ifyou’d like more information are John Eaton(894272), Jeff Matthews (894387) and DavidStreet. Ian Hunter has also been involved.

Thought for themonth Rev. Wyn Beynon

Dear Friends,I have a life long interest, no, passion foranything that flies. Birds, planes, rockets. Flyingto me is the ultimate human achievement.I’m with Tim Peake on the Space Station. I’m inthe cockpit of every plane. And I’m fascinatedby the glorious abundance of bird life - evennow as so many British species are findingthemselves in danger of extinction.Birds are as complex as human beings. A bluetit will happily ignore me whilst it feeds just 30feet away. The greater spotted woodpeckerthat was there a few moments before wouldnever tolerate me being within 300 hundredyards!Today, walking the dog, I saw a Kingfisher onthe Salwarpe taking a shortcut (at very highspeed) across the field and avoiding a big loop inthe river. The Little Egret is not unknown as itit visits the reserves at UptonWareen. That’s abeautiful snow white bird, that looks like a ¾sized heron - quite a sight!Yesterday a flock of Starlings (which didn’tbecome one of those spectacular“murmurations”) flew across the garden andour faithful clan of house sparrows ( also aspecies giving cause for concern) started tocollect nesting material this week. But the best thing, this week, was, I suppose, asI pushed the barrow across the lawn. Agoldcrest (our smallest bird - smaller than awren) flew down and washed itself in the pondfor about 2 minutes before slipping back up intothe cupressus. I just stood still, a few yardsaway, and watched. These lovely creatures are all around us, if wehave eyes to see.I’ve been told there are siskin (a small finch thatlooks like a half sized greenfinch) in the area. But I have watched in vain, so far.And last week a pair -yes a pair - of peregrinefalcon flew at about 50 feet across Fish House

Lane and disappeared behind the churchyardtrees. And I saw all of these without makingmuch effort at all.Imagine what I might see if I actually spentsome deliberate time in pursuit of our localavifauna. In the end it’s all about paying attention. Takingnotice. Just like life itself, really.Best wishes,

School bus servicesThe Diamond Bus service S70 to Ridgeway andTudor Grange from Feckenham and BradkeyGreen has a dreadful reliability record - as anycursory look at the Redditch local papers'coverage of local bus services shows.••Shouldyou wait for the bus or get a lift? This••is aregular challenge for kids waiting in the••cold onThe Square as the clock ticks on. Some parentsjust give in, which is understandable, and justtake their offspring to school. Could they notmake space for a couple more? Or should weall get a rota going?••Or at least if they feelconcerned, could they call••the WorcestershireHub to complain - or at least think about doingthat as they sail on by leaving others still coldand stranded on The Square.

World War ICentenaryCommemoration

Harry Hopcroft. The life of Harry Hopcroft, who died on 13th

March 1916, will be commemorated on thecentenary of the date of his death in the FamilyService at the Parish Church of St. John theBaptist, on Sunday 13th March 2016.

Harry was born in late 1878 and Christened inFeckenham Church on 27th October 1878, theson of Benjamin and Mary Ann Hopcroft whoran the Brook Inn at nearby Elcocks Brook. Hehad two older brothers, Benjamin and William.

Harry attended Feckenham School, and by 1901was working at Bentley Manor nearBromsgrove as a kennel man / groom. Whilstworking there he met Lillie Williamson, whowas a kitchen maid at Bentley Manor, and theymarried on 3rd May 1905 in Lillie’s home villageof Ridgmont in Bedfordshire.

Harry and Lillie emigrated to Canada in 1907,where they set up home in Sussex, KingsCounty, New Brunswick. He enlisted in theCanadian armed forces and in January 1916started his training to be a gunner with the 4th

Canadian Siege Battery at “Camp Sussex”, nearhis home. Unfortunately, three months afterenlisting he contracted pneumonia and wasadmitted to hospital in St. Johns, where he diedtwo days later on 13th March 1916. He wasburied with Military Honours in Sussex(Roachville) Cemetery in Kings County, NewBrunswick, Canada.

In April 1916 his brother William sailed toCanada, presumably to visit Harry’s widowLillie. Sometime later Lillie returned to the UK,and lived there until her death in August 1957,aged 82, in Bedford General Hospital.

It is interesting to note that the Brook Inn atElcocks Brook was run by the Hopcrofts fromthe mid 1870s until the 1950s, firstly by Harry’sfather Benjamin, followed by his mother Mary

Ann, then Harry’s brother Benjamin, and lastlyby Benjamin’s widow Amy Hopcroft.

Particular thanks are due to Ruth Cox of NewBrunswick Museum and Paul Cox from SussexTown hall, New Brunswick; who greatly helpedin providing details from Canada.

24 NOT OUTThere can’t be a more enduring film hero thanJames Bond but after 24 films and 54 years you’dthink the old chap would be getting a bit tired andlacklustre - not a bit of it! His latest adventure“Spectre” has all the youthful energy you couldpossibly wish for. There are globetrottinglocations (London, Rome, Tangier), spectacularstunts, impossible intrigue, inconceivablecostume changes, laugh-out-loud gags and a plotthat is at once utterly preposterous yet totallyinvolving. Bond encounters an old enemy andfaces a new challenge but, as with every otherBond movie, there are planes, cars, gadgets, wildwomen, wisecracks and wonderful escapism....which is what it’s all about really! “Spectre” isshowing at The FeckenOdeon onSaturday, 19th March at 7.30pm

If your magazine delivery is early there’s stilltime to catch “I’m All Right Jack” at TheFeckenOdeon on 27th February at 7.30pm

MURDEROUS FUNWhen Jack Lemmon wakes up after a night onthe town he vaguely remembers a young womanpopping out of a cake... but he doesn’t remembermarrying her... but there she is, complete withwedding ring, in his apartment and she’s adamantthat he’s her husband ‘til death do them part....which gives the reluctant bridegroom an idea.Assisted by his ingenious butler (Terry Thomas)

he decides that the only solution is terminal. Thebride (Virna Lissi) must be murdered... but thebest laid plans...It has to be born in mind that “How to MurderYour Wife” is a bit of a trip back in time.Attitudes have certainly changed - and for thebetter. In 1964 feminism had hardly beeninvented. So while accusations of politicalincorrectness could be leveled at the story of aconfirmed bachelor duped into marrying whiledrunk, this remains more a study of male follythan misogyny. It’s immaculately acted -particularly by Terry Thomas who narrates thewhole thing and guides us suavely through theplot... but we can’t give too much away aboutthat for fear of ending up in the gloppita-gloppitamachine...Showing at the FeckenOdeon on Satur-day, April 2nd at 7.30pmRegular attendees will note that, due to the dates ofEaster, our usual last Saturday in the month patternhas been broken - normal service will be resumedwith “The Lady in The Van” on 30th April

BABY IT’S COLD OUTSIDEWe’re delighted to report that the “House Full”signs have been in use at The FeckenOdeon on anumber of occasions this season. We’d just liketo point out that we have 84 members who havepaid for a seat at all of our Saturday night shows. We sell a number of tickets over and above thatnumber to the general public - and, when they’regone they’re gone. It does sometimes happenthat not all of our members attend a show andthat, despite the “Full” notices there have been afew empty seats. Our advice to non-membershas to be “book early to avoiddisappointment”. If we are sold out and youstill come along on the night we can’t guaranteethat we’ll be able to find you a seat - but we canguarantee that you’ll have to wait outside untilwe’re sure that no further members or ticketholders are going to arrive!

RISQUÉ AND FRISQUÉIf you’re under the impression that Chaucer isan ancient writer worthy only of academic study- think again! A group of travelling players isabout to prove that you can have seriouslybawdy fun with old Geoffrey.Blast from The Past are blasting into the villagewith their high energy version of “TheCanterbury Tales” and the emphasis is mostdefinitely on comedy and music. The companywill present six of the best-loved tales, told in avariety of styles. The tales are cleverly stagedand come complete with a touring set which hasbeen specially constructed to resemble amedieval travelling theatre. The cast use drama, verse, physical theatre and song to bringChaucer’s characters to riotous life, telling talespacked with colourful characters and strangesituations. This is definitely not a dry academictake on English literature – the show is fast, furious, quite often filthy and invariably funny!Note: The show is bawdy but not obscene.Young people over the age of 12 are welcome.“The Canterbury Tales” romp intoFeckenham Village Hall on Sunday, 13thMarch at 7.30pmThis show is brought to Feckenham by Shindig- the County Council’s scheme designed tobring top quality professional shows right toyour doorstep.Coming soon from Shindig:On Sunday, 15th May The Opera Dudes intheir hilarious “Licensed to Trill”. You’ll beshaken with laughter - and stirred by the music!

Tickets for both of these shows are on sale atThe Village Shop and The Rose & Crown,

TREESIf you’re wondering what’s happening about fillingthe blank spots left by the two trees that wereremoved from The Square you’ll be glad to knowthat things are moving. A generous donor hasoffered to cover the costs of purchasing andplanting a mature tree near the phone box andit’s hoped that this will be in place later thismonth. The Committee is also moving towardsordering a second tree which will also be situatedon the High Street section of The Square. Greatcare is being taken to ensure that thesereplacements satisfy the needs of theConservation Area. Watch that space!

CHRISTMAS IS COMING.... AGAIN!!Deck the Halls - Christmas is coming.... on the 23rdJuly! The annual Fun On The Square will take theform of an Australian Christmas - complete withbeach barbie and shark infested sea! More detailssoon - but put the date in your diary!

DEFIBRILLATOR SESSIONSThe Parish Council regrets any inconveniencecaused by the cancellation of February’s trainingsession. This was unavoidable and entirely due tothe illness of the trainer. There’s another sessionon 15th March at 7pm and if, as seems likely, thisis oversubscribed the Council will arrange afurther date.

TRAFFIC CALMINGConsiderable progress has been made inconjunction with the County Council and locallandowners towards making the junctions at bothends of Rockhill Lane safer and making largevehicles avoid the High Street. A new ParishCouncil working party has been set up to look atthe problems of the B4090 through the village.

Village ShopJeff Matthews

New to the shop this month and to befound in the deli are the famous award

winning pies, quiches and faggots from Fladbury.Local and lovely, come and try these out thismonth.

For those whose organisational skills are not ofthe highest, you may like to know that the shopstocks a very extensive range of cards for alloccasions. A number of villagers (nameswithheld) discovered this on Feb 13th, when, byall accounts, there was a steady stream ofpeople buying Valentine’s Cards. As part of ourunending service to the village, here are thereminders for this month’s special events thatmay require a shopping moment for a suitablecard.

Mothering Sunday is 6th March and notjust a lovely selection of cards but also a rangeof speciality chocolates is available. We willalso have fresh daffodils at pocket moneyprices.

For Easter Sunday on 27th March there's avariety of novelty chocolates, for something abit different and of course many gorgeouschocolate eggs.
