INTRODUCTION

This paper contains an analysis of voting in the Senate and House of Representativeselections held on 24 March 1990. Voting figures used are final results as supplied bythe Australian Erectoral Commission. The paper provides summary tables for both theSenate and the House of Representatives together with details for each individual Houseof Repres.entatives electoral division.

The region and party status classifications used in the paper are the same as thoseused by the Australian Electoral Commission. The party status is determined by the twoparty preferred vote at the 1987 elections adjusted for the effects of redistributions inVictoria and Western Australia. Electoral divisions are classified according to the swingrequired to unseat the sitting member: 'Safe' requires a swing of over 10 per cent: 'FairlySafe' requires a swing of 6 per cent to 10 per cent. 'Marginal' requires a swing of lessthan 6 per cent.

The names of candidates appear in the same order as on the ballot papers. Theparty affiliation of each candidate is indicated by an abbreviation. A small number ofcandidates had no party affiliation listed on the ballot papers.

Votes obtained by each party or candidate are expressed as a percentage of the formalvote. The numbers of formal and informal votes are expressed as a percentage of totalvotes. Total votes are expressed as a percentage of the number of electors enrolled. The "swing" figures compare the percentage of votes obtained by candidates at the1990 elections with the votes obtained by candidates standing for the same party atthe 1987 elections. Where a candidate stood for a party at the 1987 election and nocandidate stood for that party in 1990. the 1990 results show a blank candidate (... )and a negative swing.
