Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards

Applicability

Each standard of this part applies to all

motor vehicles or items of motor vehicle

equipment manufactured on or after the

effective date of the standard.

Effective Date

The effective date of any standard or amendment

issued after September 1, 1971, shall be either:• 2 years after the date on which such standard or

amendment is published in the rules and regulations section of the Federal Register

• the effective date specified in the notice (whichever is later)

Detailed Information

Standard #101:

The purpose of this standard is to ensure the accessibility and visibility of motor vehicle controls and displays and to facilitate their selection under daylight and nighttime conditions, in order to reduce the safety hazards caused by the driver’s diversion from the driving task, and mistakes in selecting controls.

Controls and Displays

Shift Lever Sequence, Starter Interlock and Braking EffectThe purpose of this standard is to reduce the likelihood of shifting errors and starter engagement with the vehicle in the drive position, and to provide supplemental braking at speeds below 40 kilometers per hour.

Standard #102:

Standard #103:

Each vehicle shall have a windshield defrosting and defogging system which operates either by applying heat to the windshield or by dehumidifying the air inside of the vehicle.

Windshield Defrosting and Defogging Systems

The purpose of this standard is to insure

safe braking performance

under normal and

emergency conditions.

Hydraulic and Electric Brake Systems

Standard #105:

Standard #106: Brake Hoses

• This standard specifies labeling and performance requirements for motor vehicle brake hoses, brake hose assemblies and brake hose end fittings

• The purpose of this standard is to reduce deaths and injuries occurring due to brake system failure from hose or hose assembly rupture

Standard #108:

The purpose of this standard is to reduce traffic accidents,

deaths and injuries by providing ample roadway illumination

and making vehicles more noticeable on public roads so that

their presence is perceived and

their signals understood in all

conditions.

Lamps, Reflective devices and

Associated Equipment

Standard #110:

This standard specifies requirements for

tire selection to prevent tire overloading.

Tire Selection and Rims

• This standard specifies requirements for the performance and location of rearview mirrors

• The purpose of this standard is to reduce the number of deaths and injuries that occur when the driver of a motor vehicle does not have a clear and reasonably unobstructed view to the rear

Rearview mirrors

Standard #111:

This standard establishes the requirement

for providing a hood latch system

or hood latch systems.

Hood Latch System

Standard #112:

This standard specifies requirements for theft protection to reduce crashes resulting from unauthorized operation of a motor vehicle. It also specifies requirements to reduce crashes resulting from the rollaway of parked vehicles with automatic transmissions as a result of children moving the shift mechanism out of the "park" position.

Theft Protection

Standard #114:

• This standard specifies requirements for fluids used in hydraulic brake systems, brake fluid containers and labeling of containers

• The purpose of this standard is to reduce failures in braking systems which may occur because of the manufacture or use of improper or contaminated fluid

Motor Vehicle Brake Fluids

Standard #116:

• This standard establishes requirements for tires on multipurpose passenger vehicles, trucks, buses, trailers and motorcycles

• The purpose of this standard is to provide safe operational performance levels for tires and to place enough information on the tires to permit their proper selection and use

New Pneumatic Tires

Standard #119:

• This standard specifies tire and rim selection requirements and rim marking requirements

• The purpose of this standard is to provide safe operational performance by ensuring that vehicles are equipped with tires of adequate size and load rating and with rims of appropriate size and type designation

Tire Selection and Rims

Standard #120:

• This standard establishes performance and equipment requirements for braking systems on vehicles equipped with air brake systems

• The purpose of this standard is to insure safe braking performance under all conditions

Air Brake Systems

Standard #121:

• This standard establishes requirements for the return of a vehicle's throttle to the idle position when the driver removes force from the accelerator, or in the event of a severance or disconnection in the accelerator control system

• The purpose of this standard is to reduce deaths and injuries resulting from engine over-speed caused by malfunctions in the accelerator control system

Accelerator Control Systems

Standard #124:

Warning Devices • This standard establishes requirements for

devices used to warn approaching traffic of the presence of a stopped vehicle

• The purpose of this standard is to reduce deaths and injuries due to collisions between traffic and disabled vehicles

Standard #125:

This standard specifies

requirements to afford

impact protection for

occupants.

Occupant Protection in Interior Impact

Standard #201:

This standard specifies requirements for head

restraints to reduce the frequency

and severity of neck injury in

vehicle collisions.

Head Restraints

Standard #202:

This standard specifies requirements limiting

the rearward displacement of the steering

control into the passenger compartment to

reduce the likelihood of chest, neck or head

injuries.

Steering Control Rearward Displacement

Standard #204:

• This standard specifies requirements for glazing materials for use in motor vehicles and motor vehicle equipment

• The purpose of this standard is to reduce injuries resulting from impact to glazing surfaces, to ensure a necessary degree of transparency in motor vehicle windows for visibility and to minimize the possibility of occupants being thrown through windows in collisions

Glazing Materials

Standard #205:

This standard specifies requirements for

door locks and door retention components to

minimize the likelihood of occupants being

thrown from the vehicle as a result of impact.

Door Locks and Door Retention Components

Standard #206:

This standard establishes requirements for

seats, their attachment assemblies and their

installation to minimize the possibility of their

failure by forces acting on them as a result of

vehicle impact.

Door Locks and Door Retention Components

Standard #207:

• This standard specifies performance requirements for the protection of vehicle occupants in crashes

• The purpose of this standard is to reduce the number of deaths and severity of injuries, by specifying requirements in terms of forces and speeds measured in test crashes and equipment requirements for restraint systems

Occupant Crash Protection

Standard #208:

• This standard specifies requirements for seat belt assemblies

• A seat belt assembly shall be designed for use by only one person at any one time
