Some are fast. Others are strong.

Many have stamina.

But they can’t see.

They have no eyes.

And no other skill to make up for it.

They don’t realize when they make mistakes.

They keep on working. It ends in chaos.

But there’s no use yelling at them.

They’re not just blind, they lack feelings.

So let us instead speak of the ones who are always watchful.

Let us talk about the ones who only have eyes for you.

They’re here with a purpose.

They’ve come to feed the machines.

Meet the creatures.

our company

SVIA is an idea-driven technology company. It is the people

and their ideas, commitment and initiative. Our people are am-

bitious. They think constantly about how to combine tech no logy,

flexibility and standardization. They are competent. They want

you to like their ideas.

The company has an entrepreneurial spirit. We enjoy a

challenge. We want to have fun. Our biggest challenge is

preserving the entrepreneurial spirit even during times of

rapid growth. We plan to succeed.

Our cells are comprised of three parts:

a feeding solution, our vision system

PickMT and a robot.

The vision system localizes the

component. The robot picks it up. It

adjusts the position of the component,

feeding it first to the machine, then on

to the following stages with perfect

precision.

It can do this in thousands of different

ways and a few minutes are all that is

required to teach the robot how to handle

a new component. This is our standard

solution. It works everywhere.

our vision

Our customers already tell us we’re the

best. They praise the simplicity, flexibility,

compact ness, design and cost-efficiency of

our products. But we don’t allow ourselves to

be satisfied. We continue moving forward.

Industrial automation can always be

more cost-effective, faster, simpler, better-

looking and have greater reliability. We are

working to further standardize our products,

with the goal of greater flexibility. Our chal-

lenge is to guide the robot with ever more

precision.

We are seeking our Holy Grail; when

the camera can register even more and the

gripping tool is able to pick up things it can’t

grip with 100 percent reliability today.

All in an attractive, user-friendly package.

Page 44: Feed the machines - SVIA

Page 45: Feed the machines - SVIA

successful automation is less about technology and more about how the technology is packaged.

/ Ari Kesti

Page 46: Feed the machines - SVIA

The SVIA story begins in 1997 when the

company Husqvarna has a problem with a

subcontractor. A machine isn’t working as

it should.

Husqvarna employee Ari Kesti visits

the subcontractor to see what the problem is.

He is 24 years old and his highest academic

qualification is a high school level technical

education.

The story that follows includes a non-

existent machine, a frigid chicken coop with

bad lighting, calculations of the actual cost

of how parts are processed in manufacturing,

a professor at Linköping University, an ABB

robot and a local company that develops

vision systems.

After four years the first robot cell

labeled SVIA is ready. The future looks

brighter for manufacturers.

our product

SVIA builds automated solutions for

machine tending processes. Our automated

cells use robots to feed components to

lathes and mills and to post-tending pro-

cesses like deburring, washing, assembly

and part marking.

What makes SVIA special is that we are

already building robot cells for a new era

in manufacturing. The level of precision is

extremely high. It’s fast. It’s clean. The

operators are happy. The company makes

a quick return on its investment.

Whatever the material and shape, plastic,

castings or sheet metal, it makes no difference.

Small batches are no longer an issue. The cells

are quick to install and in many cases every-

thing is included, even the programming. It’s

simple. It looks good. It’s done right.

svia academy

Albert Einstein may once have said ”Logic

will get you from A to B, imagination will

take you everywhere.“ We can only agree.

When you take part in the training at

SVIA Academy you’ll learn how to operate

and program the robot cells. You’ll find out

everything you need to know about the

feeders, the robot system, the camera

and the vision system for production to

function smoothly and effectively. We

review the technology and practice pro-

gramming for your specific components.

But since SVIA’s robot cells are so easy

to use and get started with, we think the

most important thing that happens during

the educational process is that you become

a part of our journey into the future.

We aim to continually increase our

customers’ competence so the robot

cells can be used to the fullest. The con-

version process should go smoothly and

require as little help from us as possible.

It’s only during your training at SVIA

Academy that you will see the full poten tial

of your robot cells. The wonderful thing that

usually happens is that you start to see

new possibilities for automation. The goal

of our training is to make our customers

self-sufficient so they can program their

own robots.

Human beings are unique in their ability

to work with an idea and actualize it. At

SVIA Academy we take advantage of that

quality together.

At the heart of our solutions is our own vision system,

PickMT. It gives the robot the desired precision, safety and

keen eye for detail. But successful automation is not just

about technology.

SVIA is the creative, structured brain that gathers the

parts into a single, easy to handle, compact and attractively

designed automated solution. It’s not technology that makes

the automation successful; it’s how the technology is packaged.

nanoflex™

COMPACT / SMALL BATCHES

NanoFlex is designed for quick changes

in production. It’s compact but has a wide

range of functions.

Even if you’re only processing two com-

ponents, NanoFlex is a good investment.

It completely replaces conventional bowl

feeders. The buffer is located outside of the

cell, making it simple to tip in components.

With the feeder on a mobile fixture, it’s

easy to move it between applications.

ADVANTAGES

Replaces traditional bowl feeders,

can handle many different components.

Flexible feeding for small components

Easy to build into assembly cells

A large number of small components (up to

2.4 in / 60 mm depending on their geometry)

can be fed without having to change the

hardware. Many adjustments can be made

during operation. The significance of different

parameters is displayed on a screen.

The operator can easily teach the robot to

pick up new products in just a few minutes,

right at the machine. The gripper fingers

are all that need to be adjusted.

With the right robot–small hanging picker

robots and SCARA robots– cycle time

can be reduced to about 0.5 seconds.

MicroFlex can also be installed with

conveyor tracking, which synchronizes

the robot’s picking action with the

speed of the conveyor belt, reducing

time even further.

MicroFlex is SVIA’s fastest feeder, built

for very short cycle times. It’s at its best

when handling smaller components, up to

approximately 2.8 in / 70 mm and 1.1 lb / 0.5 kg,

sizes that can also be handled by MiniFlex.

The difference is that MicroFlex is designed

for applications with an especially great

need for speed. It’s set up for use with

several kinds of robots to ensure optimal

adaptation to different needs.

feedline™

HIGHLY FLEXIBLE / EXPANDABLE

New components are programmed in

just a few minutes.

Components are placed manually on a

conveyor belt that also functions as a buffer.

FeedLine can be unmanned for long periods

of time while the robot picks up components

from the belt and feeds them on to one or

more processing machines.

The system can be integrated into existing

production lines where components come

separated from each other. The robot can

also place finished components directly

onto pallets, sometimes with dividers.

FeedLine is the solution for fragile compo-

nents or processes with a cycle time longer

than 15 seconds. It replaces traditional con-

veyors with fixtures, is very flexible and has

no limits for size or weight of components.

FeedLine can be adapted for different

kinds of machine tending, but can also be

equipped with add-on options for deburring,

cleaning, part marking, washing and quality

control.

ADVANTAGES

Automates one to three machines

Can handle all geometric shapes

palletpickerTX™PIPES FROM PALLET / NO COMPUTER

The TX model is as useful and flexible as

our regular PalletPicker and works just as

well for large and heavy parts as it does for

those that are small and delicate.

PalletPicker TX is also very compact. A robot

and a pallet, that’s all there is to it. It can be

adjusted to tend one or several machines

for handling pallets, deburring, cleaning,

part marking, washing and quality control.

PalletPicker TX is fully automated and

picks up tubular shapes directly from a

pallet. It handles components that are in

disarray just as well as those arranged in

layers, with or without dividers.

Rather than our usual vision system, the

robot’s gripper is guided to the components

with the help of a laser sensor that is placed

in the gripping tool. PalletPicker TX therefore

requires less hardware, and no computer or

camera tower.

ADVANTAGES

Suitable for tubular shapes

Picks up layered components

with vision system

MT5 is our turnkey robot cell. Safety is built

in and the program is tried and true.

With MT5, two processing machines can

be fed at once. The alternative is to feed

one processing machine and add on further

processes such as deburring, washing and

quality control.

The cell comes equipped with different

robots depending on strength and range

requirements. It can include a conveyor belt

or drawer storage, and an extra camera

can be added for fine adjustment when the

feed needs to be very precise.

WIDE VARIETY / SHORT SERIES

Our accessories give you the possibility

to add the post-feeding procedures your

process requires. The more post-feeding

procedures you build into the cell, the

more profitable your investment will be.

All accessories are made to fit our

standardized products. All features are

well tested and reliable. The accessories

increase the flexibility and degree of

refinement in your production while still

using the same robot cell.

Most often a 6-axis robot is chosen, but

sometimes we decide on a 4-axis robot.

It all depends on how your needs and

preferences match up. Here are some

of the most common choices.

The robot most suitable for the job

works inside the robot cell. We analyze

the process, establish payload and range

requirements, then select the robot in

consultation with you.

if something goes wrong

We’re always on call if there’s a problem.

We put a lot of energy into making our

robot cells reliable. Troubleshooting is

a relatively small part of our work.

But we also know that you can only feel

secure if we show you that we’ll be at your

side if something goes wrong.

Conveyor belts and gripper fingers are

subject to wear and tear, and no computer

works faultlessly for years on end. A camera

may need occasional adjustment.

Preventive maintenance is our strategy.

Our goal is to make everything work, from

the beginning and long into the future. We

back up that ambition with training so you

can use your own abilities and resources to

keep production running smoothly.

In any case, if you’re in charge of produc-

tion it’s important for you to know that we

have a large service team. If a problem re-

quires us to be on-site, we’re always on call.
