FELLOW OF THE INSTITUTE AWARD During the 1988 annual meeting the CIFST approved the creation of a new award category titled "Fellow of the Insti- tute". The purpose of the award is to honor a CIFST member of outstanding and distinguished accomplishment as mea- sured by extraordinary performance. The qualification requirements and selection criteria and procedures are outlined below. This represents your invitation to consider a deserving colleague and perhaps put himlher forward in nominations. Nomi- nations may come from any quarter of CIFST but the criteria below should be considered carefully. CIFST Fellowship An award conferred upon a living, active member of the Canadian Institute of Food Science and Technology of out- standing and distinguished accomplishment as measured by extraordinary performance in the field of food science or food technology. Recognition A person recognized as a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Food Science and Technology shall be entitled to use the designation FCIFST following hislher name. Qualifications The CIFST Fellowship is an award of extraordinary professional distinction to be conferred upon a living person who has been a member-in-good-standing of CIFST for at least 7 years prior to nomination. The candidate shall be active in the practice of the profession of food scienceltechnology and shall have attained distinction, as measured by perfor- mance, normally over a period of five to ten years in at least one, but preferably more than one, of the following measure- ment criteria. Performance may be measured as publication of important technicallscientific papers, books or patents; inspired teaching of courses in food science or creation of important scientificltechnical courses in an institution speciali- zing in the teaching of the discipline of food science; outstanding technical direction or leadership, or other creative con- tributions to the profession promoting the achievement of one or more Institute objectives, as may be deemed accepta- ble by a majority of the Fellowship Selection Committee. Selection of Fellows A Fellowship Selection Committee shall be struck by the Awards Committee Chairman, will serve for a period of two years and will consist of seven Fellows of the Institute. To be elected a Fellow of CIFST, a candidate must receive the approval of five of the seven Selection Committee members. The Chairman of the Fellowship Selection Committee will be elected from among the seven Fellowship Selection Committee members by majority vote. The Selection Committee Chairman is responsible for transmission of documents to Selection Committee members, receiving and collating mem- bers votes and transmitting Selection Committee decisions to the Awards Committee Chairman for action. Nomination of Candidates Nominations of candidates may come from any quarter of CIFST; individuals, sections, committees or national execu- tive for example. The nomination should be accompanied by : 1. A carefully written statement by the nominator highlighting the candidate's accomplishments and explaining clearly the candidate's merits for fellowship selection. 2. A carefully detailed curriculum vitae of the candidate including reference to important accomplishments, lists of publi- cations or other documentation providing additional detail and supporting the nominator's written statement. These two documents should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with a fair description of the candidate's career and accomplishments. A single accomplishment, if of sufficient merit, might warrant election to fellowship. Limitations The total number of Institute Fellows shall not exceed 3.0% of the number of professional members of the Institute and no more than five Fellows may be elected in anyone year.
