From the simple to the extravagant, Ferche has the ideas, styles, designs and woodspecies to please the most discriminating. We hope this guide to mouldings assistsyou in finding the perfect look for your home.

The moulding selection process can be a complicated one. Thefirst several pages contain groups of mouldings that would beconsidered standards of the Ferche lineup. These seven groupingsare all shown in red oak, a mainstay in the upper midwest.However, any profile can be obtained in any wood specie. As youcontinue through the brochure, you will discover more ideas,options, styles and looks that will guide you through the processand help you define your home’s interior.

This page shows two styles in red oak that are often used in starterhomes. The casing and base perform the function designed formouldings—cover an unfinished edge, such as drywall, in order to give afinished appearance. Chair rail is used to protect a wall from chairdamage or to separate the upper and lower walls which may havedifferent colors or textures. Crown is used as an architectural accent,defining the ceiling line with an interesting shape, texture or color.

The simplest and most economical mouldings are oftentimesreferred to as “Ranch” and “Princeton.” The casing is generally7/16" thick and 2 1/4" wide. The base is 3/8" x 2 3/4". Thesesizes are adequate for modestly priced homes. Larger mouldingsare more appropriate for more expensive homes.

Ranch Casing & Base

A flat casing and base are often used with a design style called “Craftsman”or “Mission.” This style calls for very clean lines with minimal curves andprofiling of the mouldings. Red oak, with its interesting and more activegraining, is a species that works well with the contrasting simple lines ofthis style. The examples shown here have a 3 1/4" casing and a 5 1/4"base. This size would be a move-up package from the most economical sizesshown on the previous page. This size is well suited for rooms with 9'ceilings or larger proportions.

Flat Casing & Base

This moulding package contains a bevel casing, similar to the casingon the previous page, but thicker and wider. It could be categorizedas traditional or colonial. The crown has been enhanced by theaddition of a base moulding behind it, which gives the crown aheavier look without adding as much cost as a one piece crown of thesame perceived size. The base shown here is a hardwood veneer overan MDF core with a solid hardwood top edge. This product is lessexpensive than a solid base of the same size. The chair rail is widerwith a more defined profile shape.

These two examples show 3 1/4" bevel casing being used with abackband, bringing the overall width to 3 3/4". The backband, selectedto match the style of the casing, gives the casing a more substantial lookand works well if the base or chair rail (which butts into the casing) isthicker than the casing alone. This gives the casing a much heavier lookwithout a significant increase in price. Making the same shape in onepiece of wood is much more expensive.

The crown and chair rail to the right contain notched mouldings calleddentil. The dentil adds another set of shadows and visual texture to giveinterest to the mouldings. This moulding package could be usedsuccessfully in traditional or colonial settings. The scale of thesemouldings is appropriate for homes with 9' and taller ceilings and roomsof larger proportions.

Ferche has several sizes and styles of the miterless system using cornerand plinth blocks. Blocks are most used with flat casings like theF160 shown at left. Other similar casings are F161 and F163.Smaller casings at 2 3/8" wide and larger flat casings at 5 1/2" areavailable with corresponding plinth and corner blocks.

The mouldings for those who wouldlike to express themselves with acreative flair is F169. Thismoulding can be used with 2 typesof inserts, a reeded one (F169B) toadd shadow lines or a smooth one(F169A) which can be clear-coated,painted or wrapped in acomplimentary wall covering. Theseare used with plinth and cornerblocks. Now you can redecorateyour mouldings when you redecorateyour room.

The Decorator Series is Ferche Millwork’s answer tosimple sophistication. Window and Door ToppersExquisite looks. Quick to install. Designed to be costeffective.

The toppers are assembled by Ferche Millwork to fityour door and window openings. Mix and matchwood species to suit your interior design theme. Thesystem has been designed to give you the look ofluxury for little more than the price of a simplecased opening.

The 3/4" thick topper measures approximately 6"tall at ends and, on those with a top arc, 7" in thecenter. The casing with backband measures 3 3/4 -4" wide. Depending on the backband style, the sideswill allow for a base/basecap with up to a 3/4" - 1"projection.

With the system, installation is quick. The finishcarpenter simply installs the sides, sets the top, nailsit in place and moves on. Labor savings andengineered design savings on the sides makes for anexquisite appearance at a reasonable cost—acombination that will please builders as well ashomebuyers.

The system gives you the option of mixing variousspecies to bring together other woods used in thehouse. For example, the use of a walnut floor andcherry doors can be unified by using trimcontaining both species. Or, the use of a singlespecie can accentuate the design of the mouldingsaround an opening in a more subtle fashion. Eitherway, the window and door openings make a positivestatement regarding the thought and considerationgiven to the design of the interior trim package.

The casing and backbands can be ordered in anycombination or specie as sides, pieces or randomlength product.

Toppers

Another way to embellish the tops of windows anddoors is with toppers built on-site. The followingare examples to give you design ideas.

These toppers can be used with a variety of casingstyles, including bevel casing (generally 3 1/4" orwider) like F130, F131, F132 or F196/F134; VIPCasing like F160, F161, F162 ; or flat casing (3 1/4" or wider).

Mantels

A mantel is an excellent example of utilizingmoulding components in a coordinated way toachieve a beautiful result. Ferche has designed anumber of mantels that can be ordered with a singlepart number that are packaged with everythingrequired to construct the mantel. The componentsare sized for a 39" x 52" opening and need to be cutand assembled to fit the firebox and its surround.

Key to EZ BEAM’s simplicity is the interlockingdesign. This interlocking feature ensures a fail-saferegistration of parts, and provides the nailingchannel through which the parts are fastened. Oncefilled, the nail holes will be virtually invisible. EZBeam makes installation as easy to understand as itis to accomplish. You’ll take great pride in thefinished job. No major remodeling. No weeks-on-end of unlivable workspace.

InstallationAn EZ BEAM ceiling can be laid out in proportionto the custom specifications of any room. Beamsides differ in height, the tallest trimming theperimeter of the room, a shorter beam providingthe main beam structure running the length of theroom, the smallest serving as the cross membersbetween the main beams.

EZ Beam

The EZ BEAM structure is installed starting withthe perimeter components, followed by the mainbeams and finally the cross members. Blocking ofthe appropriate width is screwed to the ceilingsequentially, that is, for the perimeter componentsfirst, followed by application of the perimeterbeams, blocking for the main runners next,followed by application of the runners themselves,and finally, blocking for the cross membersfollowed by the application of the cross membersthemselves. Kiln-dried blocking material orplywood (not dimensional lumber) is recommendedto minimize shrinkage, and the resultant gapsbetween beam members.

Step one of the installation is to attach beam side toblocking. The nails securing the side to the blockingwill be covered later with bed moulding. Fit thebottom component into the side member grooveand clamp into position. Nail side member to beambottom through nailing groove.

Repeat procedure to attach opposing side member.Continue until all beam sides and bottoms havebeen positioned and nailed. Install bed mouldingaround the top inside corner of the square formedby the installed beams.

A suggested method of bed moulding installation isto install opposite sides, trimming the ends at 90degrees. Then, after measuring the span length, trimthe pieces with a 45 degree miter, cope the miter cutand install between the other two mouldings. Analternative method is to simply cut a 45 degreemiter corner on all pieces.

The finished result is a beautiful beamed ceilingwith nice detailing without an excessive amount oflabor. The design of the system speeds installation aswell as adding to the cleanness of the look due tothe inconspicuous placement of the fasteners.

Here is an example of a large casing requested by one of ourcustomers. We received a rough sketch of the profile shape,measuring 2 1/4" thick by 4" wide. They requested it in red oakand cherry. In other cases, an actual sample of the moulding tobe duplicated can be sent. We will match it exactly.

Types of Wood

What wood species do you like? There are manythings to take into consideration—cost, color, grain,hardness and others. If you will be using little or nostain in the finishing process, the characteristic colorof the species is important. Some people think thereis nothing more beautiful than clear-coated cherrywhen it is allowed to age into a dark, rich, reddish-brown. Others appreciate the natural beauty oflighter woods like hard maple or oak with a clearfinish. If darker stains are to your liking, there is theopportunity to use a less costly type of wood andstill achieve a beautiful look. Poplar, a lower pricedhardwood, is used as a substitute for alder or cherrywith good results and significant savings whenstained and finished properly.

The hardwoods most commonly run by FercheMillwork include red oak, poplar, hard maple, softmaple, birch and cherry. Any hardwood can beobtained and processed by Ferche. During a oneyear time period, we will process over 40 differentvarieties.

There are obvious differences between wood species,especially when it comes to color, graining andpricing. One thing that is common among all woodspecies is the visual variety within the same species.There will be differences in color, hue, graining,density, mineral streaks, the amount of sapwoodversus heartwood, internal stresses and on and on.That’s the nature of a product which grows under avariety of conditions over several decades indifferent geographical locations, and, what giveswood its beauty and character.

There are also special characteristics among certainspecies to make note of...

Red OakFerche obtains red oak from sawmills near itsconcentration yard in Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee, inthe heart of the Appalachian Lumber region. Thisarea produces trees which reach the bestcombination of good length structure and goodcolor. Red oak coming from Southern Lumberregions (not used by Ferche) will have a muchbroader color range, with more gray and pinks,which puts it outside the range of what is thepreferred wheat color. The red oak that we processhas a good length and width structure along withgood color.

Types of Wood

Hard and Soft MapleWe sell both hard maple and soft maple. Our hard maplewill have a consistent white/cream color that peoplegenerally associate with maple. Longer lengths (up to 16')are available in small quantities. Soft maple will be lessexpensive, but has characteristics that many people don’tlike. It will have more color variation than our hardmaple, including more of a gray color tone. If clear-coated or stained, this will be noticeable, especially whencompared to a maple door which will be made with hardmaple veneers and solid stock. Soft maple lengths are notas good as hard maple, with a heavy concentration in the8' to 12' range. When maple is stained, both hard andsoft, it tends to get “blotchy” in areas which absorb stainmore readily. This effect is much more noticeable in softmaple than in hard. The mouldings can be treated with aconditioner prior to staining to minimize this effect. Softmaple also has more short, squiggly, dark lines, which arethe result of worm tracking. This is considered by someto be “character” and by others to be a defect. Mostpeople will be more satisfied with the quality and look ofhard maple.

Natural Yellow Birch

Poplar

PoplarPoplar is the hardwood we recommend as a paintableproduct. It is one of the least expensive hardwoods thatwe produce. Poplar has a greenish hue with naturallyoccurring purple and black streaks. Ferche buys a selectgrade without the dark streaks which works well as astainable product. Poplar has a good length structure andcan be mixed successfully with other species, like alder,which comes only in shorter lengths. There will need tobe some “tweaking” with stains to get the two species tocolor match, but the grain, texture and pore structurebetween these two species allows for a good match.

BirchBirch, like maple, will tend toward blotchiness whenstained. Birch lumber runs short. Mouldings will beavailable up to 12' long, heavy in the 8' to 10' range.There is a limited supply of lumber wider than 6".

Clear Alder

Knotty Alder

Cherry

Alder (Clear and Knotty)Alder has a short length structure and will be available upto 10' long and widths up to 6". Clear alder may havelimited availability and may contain tight pin knotswithout being considered defective. Knotty alder canhave broken knots with holes up to the size of a dime.

CherryThe red coloration associated with cherry comes fromthat part of the tree called the heartwood (center part ofthe log). The lighter part of the log, found on the outerperimeter of the tree, is called sapwood. The lumber wepurchase for mouldings is the highest grade, but stillcontains some of the lighter sapwood. Therefore, themouldings we sell will have a small amount of light colorstreaking. Small, dark streaks (pitch and gum pockets) arealso common characteristics. Cherry may have somelonger lengths up to 14', but only in small quantities.

Black WalnutWalnut’s dark color is characteristic of itsheartwood. Like cherry, it may have some lightstreaking. Walnut is usually limited to lengths up to12' and widths up to 6". Due to a somewhatlimited supply, the NHLA Grading Rules are lessstringent when applied to walnut.

African MahoganyAfrican mahogany is the variety Ferche generallyuses in its products because it is more abundantthan other varieties. It is harvested usingenvironmentally sound practices. The length andwidth structure is good. The dark color ofmahogany is often associated with the “old money”look.

HickoryHickory is often associated with a rustic decoratingstyle. The light and dark pattern in the lumber ismore informal. Hickory is a heavy wood and evenmore durable than red oak. African Mahogany

eputations have to be earned, no one can hand youone. Since its beginning in 1958, Ferche Millwork,Inc. has grown to be nationally recognized for itsquality and service and has since set the standard for

the hardwood moulding industry. Quality doesn’t happen byaccident. It is the goal of many, achieved by some, butmaintained by few. To maintain this high level of quality, youneed to control the product through all phases of production. Todo this, we start by buying only the finest quality hardwoodsavailable from a growing number of trusted, reliable suppliersthat have grown with us over the years.

This lumber is delivered to Ferche Millwork’s concentration yardin Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee, where each board is examined andgraded by us. Only the best lumber willlater be shipped to our manufacturingfacility in Rice, Minnesota. Oncegraded, the lumber will be properly“stickered” (separated with woodenstrips) and allowed to air dry to thecorrect moisture content.

This air dried lumber will then beshipped and unloaded at our Minnesotafacility where, under precisely controlledconditions, with the latest technology,we carefully dry the lumber in our kilns.This gives our lumber the highest degreeof stability and machinability tomaintain the finest finish possible onour mouldings.

After drying, the lumber is processed foroptimum yield, lengths and quality. Weemploy state-of-the-art technology withautomated high speed equipment thatholds to precise tolerances. With thisequipment, we can supply ourcustomers with the highest qualitymouldings available.

Ferche Millwork offers over 250 standardprofiles, solid, veneered and fingerjointed,many of which are in stock for immediatedelivery. For that special project, we alsoproduce custom profiles in many species, allwith minimum leadtimes.

Ferche mouldings are known for theirconsistency in profiles; manufactured by knivessharpened in-house to our own templates,under the watchful eyes of our well-trained,skillful employees.

Conservation of our natural resources is part ofour daily operations. The short lumber blanksare utilized by fingerjointing them into useableproducts. We burn wood shavings to fire ourboilers, which provide steam for our kilns andheat for our plant. A portion of our sawdust isused by local farmers for animal bedding.Nothing is wasted in the manufacture of ourproducts.
