COMPLIANCE AND CLASSIFICATION OF MANHOLE COVERS

Compliance and classifica�on of the manhole covers and frames(EN124:1994_. The appropriate class of manhole covers to be useddepends upon the place of installa�on. The various places of installa�onhave been divided into groups numbered 1 to 6, as listed below.

GROUP 1 : (class A 15 minimum) Test 1.5 metric tonAreas which can only be use by pedestrians and pedal cyclists.

GROUP 2 : (class B 125 minimum) Test 12.5 metric tonFootways, pedestrian areas and comparable areas, car parks or car parking decks.

GROUP 3 : (class C 250 minimum) Test 25 metric tonFor gully tops installed in the area kerbside channels of roads which whenmeasuredfrom the kerb edge, extend a maximum of O.Sm into the carriageway and amaximum of 0.2m into the footway.

GROUP 4 : (class D400 minimum) Test 40 metric tonCarriageway of roads (including pedestrian street), hard shoulders and parkingareas, for all types of road vehicles.

GROUP 5 : (class E 600 minimum) Test 40 metric tonAreas imposing par�cularly high wheel loads, e.g.docks, aircra� pavements.

GROUP 6 : (class F 900 minimum) Test 90 metric tonAreas imposing par�cularly high wheel loads, e.g. Aircra� pavements.

The standard specifies that the designer is responsible for making theappropriate choice of class and where there is any doubt regarding the class to be used, a higher class should be selected.

Material : Duc�le iron

Duc�le iron is also called spheroidal graphite iron / nodular cast iron. It’s a unique formof iron which prior to the metal cas�ng process receives a treatment with magnesioumto produce an excep�onally strong, impact resistant durable metal.

The benefits of duc�le iron :

Duc�le iron high strength to weight ra�o allows for the produc�on of light weightcas�ngs that offer what can amount to a 50% weight saving over tradi�onal grey iron.
