The NZAGM meeting will be held in Wellington on Saturday August 27th. New Zealand FNA representatives, Jan Graham and Renata Stewart will be able to provide more details if you are planning to attend. Finally, a new e-learning educational opportunity has arisen. This learning model will suit nurses who work part-time, have family commitments or are unable to attend conferences. I believe this forum will enhance FNA and ART nursing education in the future. The proposal is initially to give FNA $10 for

Chair Report Continued every nurse recruited and for FNA to be involved in the input of the program content. The Midyear meeting at The Gold Coast was an outstanding success. Congratulations to the Queensland Representatives who convened the meeting and I thank our partners in IVF for their support and help on the day. I look forward to helping our Victorian Representatives plan the next FNA meeting in Melbourne to be held on Sunday 4th December.

VICTORIA Victoria has settled some what after the implementation of the ART act 2008 which significantly changed the access of IVF treatment to all from January 2010. Police checks and child protection checks are standard protocol now, with the Patient Review Panel (PRP) in full swing if a presumption against treatment is found, surrogacy case, etc. The PRP has already had an appeal logged through VCAT which is yet to be determined. October 2010 we had Brett Johnson from MSD present "Elonva- Further steps to patient centred therapy" to FNA members and Tiki Osianlis Director of Embryology Monash IVF on Embryo development, from fertilisation to hatching blastocyst, which was kindly supported by MSD. In November 2010 we had Dr Anne Poliness from City Fertility Centre give a presentation on Endometriosis and the

Hon Susan Morgan, Chairperson of the Patient Review Panel give a presentation on „What does the PRP do?‟ which was kindly supported by Merck Serono. In June 2011 Professor Peter Ebeling, Chair of the Department of Medicine, University of Melbourne and Head of Endocrinology at Western Hospital, will present on „Vitamin D Deficiency‟ and Ljupka Peev, Bachelor of Naturopathy, Women‟s Health & Infertility, Practitioner at Melbourne Holistic Health Group will present on „Fertility and Natural Therapies We are looking forward to FSA 2011 being held in Melbourne and will forward further information about the FNA day soon.

Education One Hour equals One CPD point. Remember small

amounts add up.

With the focus on education, the beginning of the year has been busy. It started with a Merck Serono sponsored event in March where Dr Lucy Williams repeated her talk on The Fundamentals of Reproductive Health. Invites for the speech that was very popular last December, were extended to theatre Nurses. Diversity in ART on May 18th is a Bayer sponsored event for FNA and ANSICA.

Page 4 of 10 Fertility Nurses of Australasia - Newsletter

Nurses were well represented at the Merck Serono Speaker Tour. Sponsored education within the individual clinics has been opened to colleagues from other clinics. Hollywood and Merck Serono put on Developmental Mishaps generated by Chromosomal Error a talk given by Dr C Hardy.

Our Christmas party was a big success again last year. Dress up theme was „fairytales, superheroes and cartoon characters”. Our IT man dressed in a super sperm suit.

One patient recently reported on her outcome questionnaire that her obstetric complication was “lower atomic fluid” late in pregnancy. We were glad she didn‟t call in to visit us during her pregnancy.

Rumour has it that one gentleman supplied a urine specimen to the lab

NEW ZEALAND Thank you for the invitation to attend today‟s executive FNA meeting and we look forward to attending the FNA Midyear meeting.... Beyond IVF, on Saturday.

Thank you too, to all those in Australia who have worked so hard in FNA to make all of this possible and to ensure the continuing strong ongoing Nursing presence in FSA and FNA.

As usual in ART, we in NZ have started the year well.

Although 2011 has brought a bang, shake and rock and roll!!! For some of us.

We need to acknowledge our nursing colleagues at Repromed Christchurch who have endured not one but two recent earthquakes. The second and most severe occurring at midday on Feb 22nd 2011.

The staff, and there are 10 nurses employed there, have worked on in what must be challenging circumstances to say the least.

NZ FACE TO FACE MEETING.

Wellington is the venue for this year‟s NZ face to face meeting on Sat 27th August.

Jenny and her team are hard at work to ensure the success of the day.

The topics to be covered on the day, while yet to be totally confirmed, include PGD genetic counselling, STD update, legalities of donor embryo/surrogacy and also input from embryology, re: new science and techniques in the lab.

FSA

We have 51 nurses employed in ART in NZ at the present time including both fulltime and part time nurses.

Kim O‟Dea has confirmed that there are NZ nurses members of FSA.

We in NZ need to identify possible barriers to joining FSA and ways that any barriers can be overcome.

This will be discussed more fully at this years Face to face meeting and hopefully plans put in place to help increase the number of FSA registrations.

SPONSORSHIP.

Grateful thanks to Di Ching and Merck Serono for ongoing sponsorship in NZ and for sponsoring me to this meeting.

Grateful thanks also to Maureen Newman from MSD for Renata‟s sponsorship to this meeting.

We also very much appreciate the continuing sponsorship of annual Face to Face meetings.

GENERAL INTEREST

NZ Nursing Council Auditing for Registration:

For the last 7 years the NZ Council has randomly audited a number of nurses at the time of annual registration renewal.

The audit involves,

1. Evidence of 450 practise hours.

2. Evidence of 60 professional development hours in the last 3 years.

3. Two competence assessments against the Nursing Council Competencies.

I personally was audited in 2008. (Jan Graham)

The audited nurse completes the Competence assessment form for RN scope of practise which needs to be verified by the charge nurse.

Co worker feed back summary is also included. From doctor, nurse, embryologist, etc.

Complete list of Professional Development activities 60 hrs over 3yrs. Describe activity, what was learnt, hours spent, managers sign off.

Clinic manager supplied evidence of hours worked over the last 3yrs. Nursing Council includes a check list to ensure all aspects have been completed.

Yours in ART

Our first FNA state meeting this year was held in March at Repromed. Neil Hotham, senior pharmacist at the Women‟s and Children‟s Hospital, gave a very interesting talk on medications and pregnancy. The meeting was kindly sponsored by Orion. The next meeting is to be held this month (16/6) with Dr Jon Rampono talking on depression and anxiety disorders of fertility patients. It will be sponsored by MSD. We are also planning an end of year dinner meeting on the topic of PCOS, speaker to be confirmed. Bayer and MSD will be kindly sponsoring.

A new fertility clinic has opened in Adelaide this year, City Fertility Centre, operating out of Western Hospital at Henley Beach. Gill Homan from Flinders Reproductive Medicine has been awarded the Bayer Sponsorship prize for S.A. She is hoping to attend the Smoking Cessation Facilitators course organised by the Lung Health Promotion Centre at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, during November this year.

QUEENSLAND The end of last year & start of this year has been hectic for QLD. We finished off 2010 with another very interesting journal club generously supported by MSD. The papers covered were “Impact of different patterns of sperm chromosomal abnormalities on the chromosomal constitution of preimplantation embryos” with a big thank you to Jacquie Irving for her funny interpretation and assessment of certain aspects of the papers. We finished the year with a great turnout to the Christmas themed FNA function in December with over 40 nurses attending. The speakers were Dr De Ambrosis from QFG & Dr Lindstrom from CFC who gave an overview of ASRM 2010. They were very interesting talks and a good night was had by all. This meeting was supported by Bayer; MSD & MS.

The devastating floods in January and cyclone Yasi which have affected over 75% of QLD have left a painful reminder of how powerful Mother Nature can be. Some of our staff & clinics were affected by these floods and our thoughts & prayers go out to all who have personally affected by the flood. The 1st local FNA meeting of the year was held in February this year with Judy Applegarth giving us an update on her research “Assisted Reproductive Technology Nursing: Positioning Australian Research in the global context” and Jacqui Irvine who gave us a talk on “Sperm Aneuploidy”. This evening was generously supported by MSD. Our next journal club is scheduled for June and local meeting for August of this year.

NSW kicked off 2011 with its initial educational meeting held at IVFA North on April 6th. With an impressive attendance of over 35 nurses, Charlotte Knight, clinical embryologist and lab supervisor of IVFA West, presented “A Photographic Atlas of Embryos” which visually demonstrated embryonic development, both successful and poor. Dr Gavin Sacks, Fertility Specialist / Gynaecologist / Obstetrician, followed with a thought provoking presentation on “How to Critique a Journal Article‟. This lecture helped to differentiate credible research from poor, and stimulated reflection on the role of research and the application of its conclusions to one‟s practice. We sincerely thank our speakers for their time, and our sponsors MSD, Merck Serono and Orion for their continued support in the professional development of ART nurses.

Commencing in 2011 non-FNA members are being charged a nominal fee to attend the educational meetings. This change was instigated to reward FNA members for their ongoing registration and highlight the benefits of becoming a professional member. In addition, the mid year workshop is free to all FNA members in 2011. The next educational meeting is booked in for June 15th, to be held at SIVF – Level 2 321 Kent St, Sydney. Featured presentations include „Fitness in Fertility‟ and „CGH Testing in PGD‟. Congratulations to Sarah Harper of SIVF for receiving the Bayer Scholarship for 2011. We look forward to hearing of her experience and await the Bayer Dinner to be held at the Pullman Hotel, Homebush in August. We look forward to seeing many of you at the mid year workshop! AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY Our end of year Q & A Forum with two of our favourite Canberra fertility specialists was a great success. Many fertility questions answered. In March this year our FNA members attended an educational meeting supported by Bayer. We had two guest speakers for the dinner meeting. Fertility Nurse, Anne McLaughlin winner of 2010 Bayer Sponsorship gave a great presentation about her target group (over weight patients) how she manages them individually and the weight loss methods designed to help. She is currently studying Certificate 3 through Australian College of Sport and Fitness. We also had boutique Fertility Specialist Nicci Sides who gave an overview and the advantages of completing a Masters in Reproductive Medicine. Nurses from all three clinics attended the evening to 100% attendance.

The meeting was just before close of the Bayer Sponsorship for 2011 and it sparked 4 last minute entries. Aiming for three meetings this year our next meeting is planned for September. Sonographer Karen Webster will present all things gynae/fertility as well as 3D baby ultrasounds at 28weeks gestation. It is hoped that Karen can be a speaker at the mid year conference in Canberra in 2012. One nurse attended the Start program and six Canberra nurses will attend the workshop this weekend. At the Bayer dinner a number of nurses were very enthusiastic about the 2012 ACT workshop and although we are a small group I am sure there will be some very positive participation.
