FESTIVAL HELLENIKA® is an exciting and diverse arts festival fostering Hellenic links to the arts and celebrating Hellenic culture. ‘Hellenic’ because the focus is not on Greek nationality but Hellenic culture, both inside and outside Greece. Anybody with an interest and a passion for Hellenic art and culture is welcome, indeed encouraged to participate.

Hellenism represents a culture beyond borders, with a long and significant tradition both inside and outside of what is now the Greek Nation. It flourishes in Cyprus, The United States, Canada, Brazil, Australia and elsewhere, with major contributions from many diverse people, from Lord Byron to Con the Fruiterer.

FESTIVAL HELLENIKA® is held annually in Adelaide during March, April and May and is a major part of the Hellenic cultural scene in South Australia.

It is an open platform for people of any background to showcase Hellenic connections to the arts and their Australian manifestations.

We actively support local artists and work to make FESTIVAL HELLENIKA® accessible to the broader community. In this way we inform, broaden horizons, break down stereotypes, and foster greater harmony and understanding.

FESTIVAL HELLENIKA® is coordinated by the South Australian Council for the Greek Cultural Month Incorporated. It is a community, umbrella organisation, with membership open to any group, organisation and society with an interest in Hellenic connections to the arts. Established in 1991, with the support of the Consulate General of Greece in South Australia, it is non-political, non-sectarian, non-profit and independent. The Governing board of volunteers is elected every two years by member organisations.

Life comes to the Festival through artists, presenters, sponsors and audiences like you. We welcome you all and invite you to come join us in celebrating with FESTIVAL HELLENIKA®, as a vital part of Australia’s cultural diversity.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTΜΗΝΥΜΑ ΤΗΣ ΠΡΟΕΔΡΟΥ

As always I am excited about the Festival Hellenika ® program. The 2017 program is going to be filled with performances, presentations, exhibitions, concerts and events that reflect the talent and passion that engage audiences throughout South Australia and Greece. We aim to reach people from all walks of life, including a commitment to young people from early childhood through to tertiary level. Furthermore, we are proud of our creative achievements and our long-standing aim to encourage, nurture and promote all aspects of Hellenic cultural creativity creation and its Australian manifestations.

Some of our highlights this year will be our musical events. Musical Centres of the Aegean at the Dunstan Playhouse featuring Areti Ketime and Manolis Kottoros who will take us on an unforgettable journey not to be missed. Apodimi Kompania at the Marion Cultural Centre will touch us with Rebetika and Greek Folkloric music. Nostalgic cinema screenings will bring back memories for many; presentations on Greek Folk Remedies: Foods Facts & Fictions and Constantinople: through foreign eyes will be interesting and engaging. We invite you to hear and reflect on the stories, memories and experiences of actual passengers of the Begoña, predominately – bride ship – that transported them from Greece to Australia 60 years ago. Also as it is 60 years since the death of Nikos Kazantzakis there will be a presentation regarding one of Greece’s most famous, international acclaimed man of letters. And there are so many more. We look forward to seeing you at these events.

Festival Hellenika® is made possible through the passion, commitment and generosity of our committee members, our sponsors and of course the public who I thank for their ongoing support. Over the next few months, I trust we will immerse you in the richness, abundance and variety of our Festival.

Loula Dacolias President

An outdoor Cinema event, show casing the gold couple of Greek Cinema, Aliki Vougiouklaki and Dimitris Papamichael.

This is a story of two families, on the island of Crete, whose everlasting rivalry has split the inhabitants in two groups. In Chania, Crete the townspeople either defend the Fourtounakis or the Vrontakis families, and for what cause? It started ages ago and they don’t even remember why they hate each other. A Cretan style romantic comedy set in the picturesque beauty that is Crete that will have you in stitches.

Alexandria the second largest city in Egypt known as ‘The Pearl of the Mediterranean’ and has an atmosphere that is more Mediterranean than Middle Eastern.

This stems from its ancient intention to be a Hellenistic Centre in Egypt. There continue to be Greek Taverns in Alexandria, Egypt which boast port views.

‘Taverna Alexandria’ is a recreation of this, here in Adelaide, held at GEMES club featuring delicious Greek/Egyptian cuisine, live nostalgic Greek music, Greek/Egyptian folk dance relevant to the region.

Migration is associated with Hellenic life since Homeric times. Generations of Hellenes left their homeland in a quest for new horizons and the promise of fulfilment of their dreams and aspirations. The era of Post-World War II saw an influx of young single Hellenic women migrating to Australia to start a new life.

Peter Photakis’ talk recounts his journey of the 900 Nifes (brides) who travelled with him and his family on the ship Begoña in 1957.

2017 is the sixtieth Anniversary of this Journey. Peter and some of these Nifes reunite and present their Odyssey from then to now.

Τhe skillful violinist Manolis Kottoros conducts and performs at this vertebrate musical narration which focuses on the elements which influenced and finally transformed the Aegean islands’ musical production. Manolis Kottoros has participated in numerous concerts in Greece and abroad and he has a knowledge of Greek traditional music.

He collaborates with the well-known international singer and santour player Areti Ketime who participates as a soloist in the show. In the Musical Centres of the Aegean project Manolis Kottoros has assembled in suites the most characteristic tunes and songs of the most significant musical centres of the Aegean. He and his fellow musicians perform them in a contemporary style but with all the respect afforded to each one of the local musical idioms, join them for an unforgettable journey across the Aegan.

Presented by Dr. Margaret O’Hea

Dr. Margaret O’Hea, Senior Lecturer in Archaeology in the Department of Classics, Archaeology and Ancient History at The University of Adelaide, will present this richly engaging and timely talk. In what ways did communities identify themselves as Greek, centuries after their ancestors settled in cities of the Hellenistic Near East?

It is easy to forget that different ethnic and religious groups lived – often peacefully – side by side in the Near East for millennia and that cultural blendings were commonplace.

This lecture will explore some aspects of integration and persistent Greek identities in the regions which became the Roman provinces of Syria, Arabia and Palestine, from an archaeologist’s perspective. Not to be missed

Presented by Leonard Janiszewski & Effy Alexakis and SACGCM

Many still remember, the Greek cafe of milk bar in each suburb and every country town, in Australia open all hours, 7 days a week.

This lecture chronicles how these family-based food-catering enterprises were a ‘Trojan Horse’ for the Americanisation of the eating, social and cultural habits of Australians from the very start of the twentieth century. They introduced American commercial food-catering ideas, technology and products and influenced the development of cinema, popular music and even architecture along American lines. The Greek café and milk bar ‘transformed’ Australian popular culture.

Presented by social historian Leonard Janiszewski and documentary photographer Effy Alexakis, the lecture not only investigates the overall development of Greek cafés and milk bars across Australia (including Adelaide and South Australia), but also the personal stories of those involved – proprietors, waiting staff and customers.

An open forum presented in conjunction with the SA History Festival, exploring the time honoured traditions of folk remedies and their relation to health and well being. Greek healing remedies dating from the time of Hippocrates, offer a wealth of natural treatments and therapies to heal body, mind and spirit. They are still practised today in many Greek households but the question remains, how effective or ‘natural’ are these holistic remedies and what can they offer us in the light of modern medicine?

In addition to a historical overview of Greek home remedies and practices, the therapeutic properties of particular foods, herbs and plants will be discussed with the inclusion of audio /visual displays and tastings including chicken soup. Guest speakers include Naturopath Lynne Singlewood and Peter Photakis (on Olive Leaf extract).

Constantinople, the city of Emperor Constantine, was the capital of the Eastern Roman, or Byzantine, Empire for over 1000 years. It was considered the largest and wealthiest city in the western world, and to many it was the centre of the known world, surpassing all other cities of the time.

Thousands of people of all social classes, including pilgrims, royalty, church officials, diplomats, crusaders, artists and scholars, travelled to Constantinople, and many wrote about their experiences.

This talk will explore Constantinople through the writings of travellers and others who for religious, cultural, political or other reasons, found themselves in the Queen of Cities. By drawing on evidence including ambassadorial and diplomatic reports, letters, literary texts and travel descriptions, we will examine how Constantinople – the city, its people and culture – was viewed by visitors from both the west and the east.

Page 29: FESTIVAL HELLENIKA® IS PROUDLY SPONSORED … · › Pan Macedonian Association of South Australia ... Original acoustic tunes and stand up comedy! A unique night of performance

Presented by Martyn Brown

2017 marks the 75th anniversary of the beginning of several years of interaction between the New Zealand and free Greek armies in the Middle East and Italy during the same conflict. Radio broadcasts, Christmas postcards and socialising between the troops project an image of bonding and respect. The two armies also had their only shared victory against the Axis enemy during this period.

It was a time that also permeated with frustration, intrigue and diplomatic power plays. Examining the New Zealand experience offers insights into the interaction of the Greeks, New Zealanders and the British during this period.

The presentation will also utilise various multi-media from the period concerned.
