Foreword

It is my pleasure to introduce the final year design students’ projectsfrom the School of Design, Engineering & Computing.

The final year project is the culmination of their undergraduate studieswith us and demonstrates the pinnacle of their achievements. We takegreat pride in the quality of project work and the ability of our studentsto employ technology appropriately and effectively in the design ofquality marketable projects.

Design and innovation are of course key drivers in industry and in acompetitive and global marketplace these attributes are becomingincreasingly attractive to employers. In fact many of the projectsdescribed in this brochure are a direct result of industrial collaboration, a successful placement year or are linked to the work of one of ourresearch centres.

Advances in technology, whilst bringing about opportunities for youngdesigners, also provide challenges: appropriate use of the technology, respect for the environment, consideration of the finite resources, amongst other issues. The design projects you will see here take upthis challenge.

On behalf of our students I would like to take this opportunity to thankeveryone who has sponsored and supported our students in theirproject work.

This course preparesgraduates to have theability to analyseengineering products andequipment designproblems, and plan andimplement appropriatesolutions using moderntechniques and tools. It brings togethersophisticated computertools, engineering andcreative design to produceDesign Engineers who areable to design better andmore efficient products.

Over the four years, thestudents develop the flair, creativity and marketperception needed for thedesign of successfulproducts and equipment.

They use the latest solidmodelling, rendering andproduct simulation tools to model and evaluate their designs, which issupported by an in-depthunderstanding ofengineering principles. The students also acquirethe ability to employmodern technologies, such as rapid prototyping, that reduce both productdevelopment time and cost.

I would like to take thisopportunity to thank the course team for their hard work and commitment and tocongratulate the studentson their achievements.

Those who enter areas where livestockare kept must clean and disinfect theirboots in order to prevent the spread ofdisease. This task can be laborious at bestand it is for this reason that people don’talways do it. The Biosecurity Bootwash

has been designed to clean and disinfectboots to the required standard whilemaking it as easy as possible for the userto do so. The Biosecurity Bootwash isstored in the user’s car and is poweredvia the cigarette lighter socket.

My final project is a new oil skimmer; thisis a mechanical device that collects oilfrom the surface of water. This OilSkimmer is designed for use on all types ofoil spills in the open ocean environment. The skimmer is designed to excel in oilclean-up situations where waves, currents

and debris are encountered. There aremany solutions currently available whichhave good performance in calm, debrisfree situations (which are extremely rarefor an oil spill at sea) but they suffergreatly in rough conditions and don’t caterfor removal of debris.

I have been developing the I-Till Tray formy final year project. It stands for‘intelligent till tray’ and uses the idea ofweighing money to monitor the totalamount it holds at any one time. This willhopefully see an end to till variances

experienced by large retail companies. Ituses load sensors which I have designedto be integrated into the product and isconnected to a PIC to process theinformation and alert the user.

The Trailer Aid is a retro fit device which isdesigned to fit the majority of trailers thatuse a standard 50mm towing ball. Thedevice has to be designed so that whenthe vehicle is reversing in a straight line, the trailer will keep in line with the it,removing the need for constant correction

of the steering wheel. However, if thedriver chooses to turn, the device willallow it. The Trailer Aid will not remove theneed for driver competence but will reducethe skill and experience needed tomanoeuvre when towing, which will lowerthe risk of costly mistakes and accidents.

My final project was conceived when Irealised how much energy was movingthrough air ducts that wasn’t beingutilised as fully as it could be. I felt it waspossible to extract the energy andgenerate electricity on a micro scale,

augmenting a company’s supply withenergy that was free to produce. I feeldistributed generation will graduallybecome more important in future years,as energy costs increase and fuelsupplies become less reliable.

The “Fly-Away” Bird Scarer involves animitation bird of prey moving along asuspension line across a modernvineyard. Bird damage in Englishvineyards accounts for 10% to 20% of theoverall crop lost and the cost of aneffective Bird Scarer is easily justified.

It can also be applied to other crops andsituations. The innovative Bird Scarerproposed here avoids noise pollution andfamiliarity build-up and works on theinstinctive fear generated by a flying birdof prey.

Mini micro hydro generates a useful andspecific amount of power gained from themotion of falling rain and grey water flowcreated within a domestic scale property. An effective turbine structure has beendeveloped in conjunction with usableelectronic design, where the energy

gained within the product life spanoutweighs that of the energy used inmanufacturing development to produce apositive net energy. The easy-to-installretrofit design aims to aid the muchanticipated and potential microgeneration technology markets.

Computer Aided ProductDesign students use state-of-the-art computertools to exploit the latesttechnology enablingdesigners to model andsimulate entire productswithin a virtualenvironment. There aremany benefits to such anapproach, not least theresultant commercialadvantages associated with rapid productdevelopment and reducedtime to market.

The projects presented atthis year's show are the endresult of four years work.

For a good part of that timemost of the students willhave worked as practisingdesigners in design andengineering relatedindustries. By the end oftheir final year, studentsare expected to be able toprove and defend everyaspect of their work just asthey would if they wereworking on commercialprojects. This means thatthe products you see hereare not merely concepts ofdesign intent, but fullengineered marketableproducts that are ready togo into manufacture.

97% of UK households own a kettle, withapproximately 2,650 cups of tea beingmade each second in the UK alone. Sustainaboil is an energy efficient kettlethat encourages people to only boil thecorrect amount of water they need.Overfilling the kettle wastes valuable

energy and contributes to the effects ofclimate change, along with increasing thetime it takes to actually boil the kettle. On average we could save enoughelectricity in a week to light our homesfor a whole day, by only boiling theright amount.

Using design methods, the light remainsa more subtle addition to the bike, enabling it to have a more unclutteredstyle, which its design generally dictates. The system comes as a pair to bringcontinuity to the product.

I designed this product as a labour-savingdevice for the convenience of theeveryday gardener. The Semi-AutomaticBulb and Vegetable Planter has a highlevel of functionality that helps toeliminate the large amounts of effortinvolved in planting numerous bulbs,

vegetables and flowers. This product isoperated completely from a standingposition, greatly reducing the amount ofstrain that repetitive kneeling andbending inflicts onto the body’s joints, also making it ideal for disabled andelderly gardeners.

Hotel theft is a problem that thehospitality industry has not yet fullysolved and this puts guests’ property atrisk throughout their stay. Therefore, it ismy aim to design a new concept for asecurity based hotel with differentmethods of controlling human behavior.

There area of design which I havefocused on is dealing with the visualaccess around the space. Greatervisibility reduces the opportunity forcrime by delegating more responsibilityto the surroundings and increasingpersonal awareness.

The challenge is how to present this storythrough an interactive visitor centre, in astyle that will truly capture the spirit of theservice and become the talking point of thepublic and media alike.
