THE Fever has been inundated withphone calls from upset readers afterHibiscus Coast Municipality spokesperson Simon April said no calls werereceived regarding loud fireworks during the festive season (Fireworks bylaw to change, 12 January 2015.)

In the article, April said no callscomplaining about loud fireworkswere logged by Protection Services.

A Margate man, who only wishedto identify himself as Dave, said this is“preposterous” as he made a numberof calls to Protection Services after aneighbour started with the “bangs” inthe middle of December.

“It was horrible. I had visitors fromthe Eastern Cape who vowed to neverreturn to Margate after the area resembled a war zone on New Year’s Evewith bombs going off everywhere,”said Dave.

He said after phoning ProtectionServices a number of times he decidedto approach the man who was settingoff the loud rockets.

“Hetoldmeitwashisrightandcontinued with what he was doing.”

Dave said his dogs have not recovered from the incident.

Michelle Swart of Hibberdene saidshewas “speechless”afterreadingthearticle.

“I phoned the Hibberdene SAPSseveral times during December 2014and at the beginning of January regarding the fireworks in Hibberdene, but there was no response,” she said.

“There’s a Chinese dealer sellingfireworks in Hibberdene and accordingto law all fireworks.

“I wonder if he has a licence to sellfirework dealers must have a licence.Hopefully someone will respond andinvestigate,” she said.

The three-secondrule, for money

VUSI MTHALANE

THEendof thisweek comes as awelcomerelieftomanyofusnotso jolly spenders, some of

whom last saw a salary six weeksago.

It doesn’t help when Januarygrindsonforwhatendsupfeelinglikethree months.

The “Janu-worry” jokes on social

media started as soon as the lastfirework fizzled out and providedsome welcome humour.

It made most of us realise we arehopeless when it comes to budget-ing. That’s most of us, not all. Somepeople are goodwith money andal-ways see a gap and an opportunityto make a quick buck, where othersdon’t.

Certain traffic police and thecharismatic tent pastors andevangelists fall perfectly into thatcategory of innovative individuals.

During December and earlyJanuary we often read stories on theInternet of law enforcement officersbeing caughtdemandingbribes frommotorists. I also have a story to tell.

In December I was stopped twiceby traffic police in Richards Bay andon both occasions I was asked to pay

aspot fine “to show how sorryIwas”for some minor traffic law infringe-ments.

I did not pay the bribes thatwerebeing demanded and I did not gettickets on both occasions. It is times like this Iwish I couldplay

the “do-you-know-who-I-am?” card,but unfortunately, nooneknowsme.

WiththeholidaysoverandcomingbacktotheSouthCoast, I was equallyamazedby thenew automatic speedtrapping camera on theR102 inOsloBeach camouflaged as one of thosegreenTelkomboxeson the sideof theroad.Maybeithasalwaysbeenthere, but it’s the first time I was takingnotice of it.

It mademe think that the aimwasnot to make the road safer but tomake as much money as possiblefrom motorists.

The other entrepreneurial guyswhocompetewith the longarmof thelawfor your December bonus (if youare lucky) are those “tent pastors” inshiny suits.

For the duration of the festive sea-son, there was a tent pitched about akilometre frommy house at a schoolsports ground.

It may have been far from myhouse, but the loudmusic and drum-ming, combinedwith theusual theat-rical preaching, was so clear itcouldhave been just across the street.

During the intervals of the boom-ing music I could clearly hear thepastor encouraging his flock to “giveto the Lord”.

If yourpath to“salvation” involveshelpingapastor inashiny suit payoffhis R900 000 Range Rover, then Icannot find fault with that, but you

probably should. One other thing I have noticed is

that thehunger for fameandriches ismaking a lot of newly matriculatedyouths approach me looking for ad-vice on what to study if they want tobecome journalists.

Unfortunately, most of them areunder the impression that being ajournalistmeansyouare paid bucketloads of money and then you auto-matically become famous.

It always suckswhen I have to bethe bearer of badnews to these chil-dren and tell them there isnomoneyin journalism and if it’s money theywantthentheyneedtogostudysome-thing else. Plumbers and other arti-sans make way more money thanjournalists.

By the time you read this, I wouldonly have a day or two left until myemployer puts me out of my miseryand pays my January salary into thebank. From there onwards, lifeshouldgobacktowhatIconsidernor-mal.

I hope the lessonswe learnt aboutmoney over the festive seasonareal-so incorporated into the resolutionsthat some of us made for the new-year.

If not, we have another chancenextyear, andthenext, andthenext…

After the stormALTHOUGH we await the final outcomes of ourseasonal snapshot survey, we have been sourcingopinion from the public and tourism sector to getan indication of how the holidays have gone.

It seems that although the season started laterthan usual and many visitors took shorter trips tothe South Coast, the volumes were much as anticipated, which is excellent, given the financial pressure many families endure. Businesses in the rentaland restaurant sectors have indicated that theirturnoveriswellupon2013/2014whichisapleasingindication of a good season.

Complaints relating to essential services andproblem incidents appear to be down which suggests there is a strong likelihood of greater visitorsatisfaction.

It is the postnew year period that is a wonderful time to holiday here. The congestion and bigparty jollification is mostly over and more oftenthan not, the really sunny weeks brighten up ourcoast a real opportunity for true relaxation in ourcoastal paradise.

What has been interesting is that many accommodation establishments and letting agencies report that there is a more evidence of internationalvisitors (often staying for long periods) in our neck

of the woods.Having spent the early part of December in the

United Kingdom, I can fully understand why thesehuman “swallows” venture to warmer climes likeours. Certainly the favourable exchange rate alsoremains a big draw card for these long haul touristsfrom Europe.

Runofthemill South Africans can be amazing ambassadors for our country. True story wehad some guests from Lancashire staying with usand while they were at a function, they mentionedto a person they had just met that they wished togo to a game reserve. Their new friend said: “I’llmake a plan.” Within 24 hours he arranged an overnight booking (at favourable rates) and then presented them with the keys to one of his vehicles(including petrol card) and wished them well forwhat turned out to be an amazing and life enriching bush experience.

Two visitors from the north of England havenow gone back with glowing reports of SouthAfrican generosity. If we could send all our guestsback to their home with such positive anecdotesof their stay, the wordofmouth and cellphonebenefits can be massive.

The holiday storm is over time for a shortbreather and before we know it, Easter hits us withmoneygenerating vengeance happy days inparadise.

Fireworks rotgetting worse

IT isa symptomof somethinghor-ribly wrong with our inept andcorrupt society that our so-calledlaw enforcement records registershows that no complaints weremade about the loud, prolongedand illegal fireworks abuses dur-ing the season.

In the first place, many mem-bers of the public know this to bea lie, themselveshavingpersonal-lymadecomplaints. Secondly, it iscommon experience that com-plaints to the police (as to the Pro-tection Services), and not only onthis issue, often go unattended ifone is lucky enough to have thephone answered.

Last year Ihad toget theSouth-port station to phone the PortShepstonestationonaprivate lineand request that someoneanswertheir main phone. This finallyachieved, I was promised a re-sponse. When this was not forth-coming after about two hours, Iphonedagaintobetoldtherewereno vehicles available due to at-tendance at an armed hijacking.Subsequent inquiries by the localpress revealed no record of this, and in light of my opening state-ment, this is hardly surprising.

Consequently, one has to ask, what is the point in complainingwhenoneknowsthroughlongandhard experience that the law willnot be enforced. This is a serious

dilemmaforour societybecause itis liable to encourage the public totake the law into their own handsifjusticeistobedone.Thequestionhas also been asked many times,andneveranswered:howisitpos-sible that the lunatic pyromaniacswho flout the by-laws are able tobuy illegal fireworkswhen thepo-lice claim to inspect the premisesof the dealers; and further, how isit possible to import these illegalfireworks when the customs po-licearerequiredtoinspectthecar-go? The only possible answer isthat incompetence or corruption,or both, are at the service of thelawless. We are told now thatwhere dealers were found by thepolice to be holding illegal fire-works, they “were served with anotice”. What kind of “law en-forcement” is that? Were thesedealers fined?Do they retain theirtrading licence? How come the il-legal stock was still clearly soldand discharged?

Iaskagain,whyaretheexistingby-lawsnot enforced? This racketis an aural assault signalling dis-dain for this useless law, and theauthorities turn a deaf ear to it.

Every New Year or Diwalicelebration is worse than the pre-vious, mirroring the progress ofrot through our whole society.

Steven van Staden

IN 2013 I phoned the number madeavailable to the public for fireworkabuse. I am in my sixties and do notdrive at night, but I was told to give aphysical address and proof beforethey would respond.

Nowonderpeopledidn’t bother tophonein2014.Notonlydomesticani-mals are effected, what about ourwildlife and little people?

MoiraUvongo

Why evenbotherreporting?

A DEMOCRACY cannot function in a primitive, uncivilised society. According to common practice, if the people are dissatisfiedwith the functioning and/or nonfunctioning of a government, they vote for an opposition party during the following election.

This situation does not prevail in SouthAfrica, or any African country. To expresstheir disapproval, people embark on a rampage, destroying everything and anythingin their path. I fail to understand how thereis a connection between our foreign nationals (who have a sound work ethic bytrying to earn a living, contribute to theeconomy) and our municipality and/orgovernment responsible for housing. Dis

satisfied mobs looted the businesses offoreign nationals – to what avail – to destroy and lower our weakening economy?

On other occasions, marauding hordesrioted through the centre of Cape Townlooting and wrecking vehicles. This philosophy cannot be a legacy from Van Riebeeck, whose ideal was to build a refreshment station at the Cape; but rather itepitomises a philosophy of denying responsibility, negating accountability andthe lack of selfrestraint, which can be attributed to the ANC. Universal franchiseshould be replaced by qualified franchiseandperhapsthecountryrequiresabenevolent dictator – definitely not a member ofthe ANC. Libya, under Gaddafi, functionedoptimally with free education, medical assistance and was a crimefree society. There was a good quality of life.

According to South African traffic law, traffic police have to be distinguishable aslaw enforcement officials when operatingsuch equipment. They have to wear their fulluniform, from head to toe, and this includesthe cap.

In the past three weeks that I have beenhere I have often seen the woman in the accompanying photo operating a speed camera in what appears to be civilian clothing.

This particular photo was taken on

Saturday on the R102 near Port ShepstoneHospital at 10:51am. That day she was wearing a golf shirt and no cap. The weekend before that she was trapping in Oslo Beachwearing the same golf shirt with jeans andrunning shoes with no cap.

I am new to this area and I beg to be pardoned if this is standard Hibiscus traffic police uniform. As it has happened in other

parts of the country, motorists receivingspeeding tickets issued from the camera operated by this woman can dispute them because at this point it is not clear if she is atraffic official or just a friendly civilian manning the camera on behalf of a friend whois a traffic official.

Thank you Uguand HCMI WOULD like to thank all the staff ofUgu and Hibiscus municipalities fortheir hard work during the festive season. Although there were some challenges in other areas, they were quickto respond. If you compare the waythey responded to challenges in the2013 festive season and compare with2014, you can see that there is an improvement. I hope they improve moreas they are doing a good job. Is education a right or a privilege?SOME unqualified political commentators tell us that wealth will come througheducation, and the only reason we are notaffording anything is because we are noteducated enough. They tell us if we getaccess to quality education, our challenges will be over. In reality universities thatare classified as best are not designed fora child who comes from a humble family.Their registration is meant to exclude the

Creative ways togenerate cash flow>> Funding and cashflow ideas to assist you

AFTER profit, cash flow is the mostcritical element for keeping a business sustainable. For new entrepre

neurs, launching a business can be almostimpossible without ready cash available.Startup businesses need to establish cashflow as quickly as possible during their firstyear of operation.

Since stiff lending criteria make it difficult for new business owners to accesscash, some people try and source alternative means by borrowing from family andfriends or maxing their credit card limits. But with a little creativity, you can optimisesimple tools to give you greater access tocash.

Here are some funding and cash flowideas to help you get started:

Prime product and maximum marginOne of the easiest ways to boost cash

flow and profit is to drive your customersto your bestselling (or primary) product orservice that has the highest profit margin.

Deposits and upfront paymentIf you are in a service business, deposits

are a great way to generate upfront cashflow. The onus then shifts to you to deliverand maintain the trust of clients that havepaid upfront. Productbased businesses

can do the same with preorders, with payment of a percentage of the final salesprice securing the order or a certain deliverydate.

Exclusive salesHolding exclusive sales for new or loyal

customers is a good way to sell to a captiveaudience. It’s best to set up events in anenvironment you can control and with asales and pricing process you can direct. Inthis instance, “sale” doesn’t need to mean“discount”. Offering an exclusive, limitedtime purchasing period for selected customers is a way for them to gain exclusiveor early access to your products, providingincentive for them to spend money.

Adjust payment termsYou can also adapt payment terms to

give your company greater financial leeway. It’s best to pair a shorter paymentterm period with an incentive for payingearly, like a small discount. A better optionis a small gift or some other kind of addedvalue offer. This allows you to position itas both a thank you gift and an incentiveto keep customers consistent in their payment with shortened terms.

Loyalty programme feeEstablish a loyalty programme and add

enough value to allow you to charge anominal joining fee of around R25. Whilethere may be some initial upfront costs forproducing loyalty cards or for customertracking, you create a targeted list of keycustomers, as well as easily and quicklygenerate cash.

Avoid discountingRather than discounting your products

and undermining profit margins, offer incentives, like free delivery, to close a sale.Focus the customer on the benefits andquality of your product, not the price. Don’tbe afraid to lose smaller sales to attractbetter quality clients.

You can expand on these strategiesand also look to increase your value addsat different contact points with your customer during the sales process. The key isto test and measure what does anddoesn’t work for your business. It’s also important to stay flexible as different methods will work differently in your business’development.

If you market and measure everythingyou do accurately, keeping your winningstrategies and killing your ineffective onesalong the way, you will eventually find yourcash flow “sweet spot”. That will lead tolarger profits, sustained and increasedcash flow and a healthier, more successfulbusiness over time. – Fin24.

Keep your company’s cashsafe

VIOLENT attacks on South African businesses rose 14% in the past year, according to official SAPS crime statistics.

Most of these attacks – in which agreat many people were injured and evenkilled – were aimed at one thing: relievingbusinesses of their cash on hand. Forcashhandling micro, small or mediumbusinesses, the consequences of theserobberies (18 615 of them in 2013/14) areas obvious as they are often deadly –they can easily bring companies to theirknees.

SBV Services has been providing business owners with endtoend cash solutions for more than two decades and itknows what the dangers are – and howto minimise the risks that go with handling cash.

“Criminals are working hard to findmore ingenious ways to rob hardworking, honest businesses, but there are anumber of small steps that businessescan take to protect their cash and valuables,” says Grant Dunnington, the CEO ofSBV Services.

Tips to reduce your business’s riskAccording to Dunnington, basic cash

handling security measures should include these measures:

•Use licenced cashcollection securitycompanies to move and bank largeamounts of cash, as opposed to sendingout vulnerable, untrained and illequipped employees to do what is a fun

damentally dangerous job;•Keep minimal cash on your premises.

If you’ve been robbed once, don’t thinkthat “lightning doesn’t strike the sameplace twice” – after your first robberyyou’re even more vulnerable than youwere before;

•After hours, store valuable itemsthat are normally on display in a safe orvault; and

•Make sure that your insurance provider is up to date with your regular riskaudits, upgrades or changes to yourpremises.

Tips for micro and small businesses

•Don’t let employees carrying cashwear uniforms or badges that can identify them with your business.

If your staff have to move cash to thebank,keepeducatingthemontheimportance of being vigilant, even suspicious,at all times. Give them the resources thatwill save your cash – and even their lives– such as full tanks of petrol, cellphonesand emergency numbers. Never let themtake public transport or walk to the bank;

•Use secure containers that disguisewhat your people are carrying, as opposed to the obvious canvas moneybags; and

•Continually vary the routes andtimes used to move cash from the business to the bank.

Rid your home of cockroaches>> Find out where they are coming from

COCKROACHES are known to bethe most ancient insects to walkthe planet, and they also happen

tobethemoststubborn tokilloff.Cockroaches carry serious illnesses such asdysentery, typhoid, poliomyelitis andgastroenteritis as they can live on justabout anything; including fermentingproducts, septic dressings, hair, leather, wallpaper, faeces and rotting food. And, they often breed in unhygienic areas.

Many of the substances that cockroaches feed on are already contaminated, as this creepy crawly insectmoves from one location to another. Not only can people get sick from thebacteria with which cockroaches contaminate our living areas, but somepeople are actually allergic to cockroach faeces; inhaling it as small particles of dust, or ingesting it along withfood. Cockroach droppings can causeeczema and asthma, and the healthrisks are particularly high in homes containing children, the elderly or thosefighting other illnesses. As a cockroachinfestation in your home poses varioushealth risks, it is important to establishthe source of your cockroach problemand to ensure you take the appropriatesteps to start getting rid of cockroachesin your home.

Getting rid of cockroaches1. The first step is to find out if you indeed have a cockroach problem. Lookout for the signs of a cockroach infesta

tion, such as droppings, cast skins, eggcases, coupled with an unpleasantodour in dark, undisturbed areas likecupboards, kitchenettes, or under refrigerators.2. Find out where cockroaches are coming from. Cockroaches are nocturnal;meaning they are active during nighttime in search of food. You might needto do a little sleuthing to find the sourceof your cockroach infestation. Generally, cockroaches hide in cracks and crevices around your house and also enterthrough drains or vents, preferringwarm, humid areas such as kitchens astheir prime infestation spot.3. Sealing cracks, skirting boards andany other entry points cockroaches canuse to gain access will assist in gettingrid of cockroaches, and will help prevent cockroaches from entering yourhome.4. The most effective way to exercisecockroach control is to prevent themfrom accessing food and water. Be sureto store food in containers or in sealedplastic bags and clean food debris fromunder fridges or cookers and make sureto not leave liquids standing over nightin kitchen sinks or buckets.5.Cleanallwastefoodandspillagesimmediately and keep refuse or compostin sealed bins. German cockroaches tend to favour kitchens and can beattracted to crumbs in your home. Besure to disinfect kitchen surfaces ascockroaches are attracted to dirt and

grime.6. Kill cockroaches with DIY cockroachcontrol methods. Try placing cockroachpoison in areas where you have spottedthe cockroach infestation. It is alsoworthwhile to get rid of cockroaches bymixing together natural home remedies, such as boric acid which acts as apoison that they carry back to theirnests and feed to nymphs (the life cyclestage before they develop into adults).Make sure to not leave any poison in areas where pets or children eat or play.Bay leaves can also be used as a naturalcockroach repellent, but does not killthem.7. Put in place cockroach traps in yourhome to get rid of cockroaches. Cockroach traps entice cockroaches in andthen entrap them with an adhesive. Get

a few of these, and place them wherever cockroach activities are highest.Although there are many things youcan try to get rid of cockroaches in yourhome, if your cockroach problem is leftuntreated, it can quickly escalate andspread to neighboring properties. Eventhough DIY cockroach control productsaddress the immediate issue, cockroach infestations are likely to reoccur, especially when surviving cockroacheggs hatch after one or two months. It is important to seek the help of aqualified pest control technician to getrid of cockroaches in the long term, aswell as to ensure that the insecticidesthat the cockroach control experts useare environmentfriendly and safe foryour home and family.

If your cockroach problemis left untreated, it canquickly escalate and spreadto neighbouring properties.

Natural ways totrap mosquitosand insects

MANY people have become crazy due to the influxof flying, nipping, and nibbling insects. For some ofus, the closest bottle of Vaselinebased insect repellent is a first response, but perhaps you would be interested in some more natural mosquito controlmethods.

Did you know you can even make your own natural, homemade insect repellents. I’ve got mineready, it stays in my backpack all the time a few dropsof citrus and eucalyptus oil in water, vinegar, and isopropyl alcohol in a small spritzer bottle does the trick.

Even with sprayon protection, you might be inneed of something more. If you’ve got flies and mosquitoes buzzing all about your yard and home, youmay want a big trap to prevent those pesky crittersfrom inviting themselves inside for a cool drink ofyour family’s blood. And if you’ve got a worm bin,it might be hatching soldier flies, fruit flies, or fungusgnats and other icky flying things you don’t want. Here are some interesting ideas to get your creativitybuzzing.

Grow defensive plantsLantana camara is an oilysmelling ornamental

plant that has been shown to repel mosquitoes. Theliving plant itself is effective in shooing away mosquitoes.Otherplantsarealsogreatforrepellingmosquitoes, but they need to be broken and crushed inorder to release their repellent smells. These includerosescented monarda, lime basil, catnip, sacredbasil and thyme.

Sticky paper trapsFind something to use as your paper backing. You

can consider using paper bags, plastic bags, or cardboard. Make a paste of sugar and water. Heat themixture until it thickens, and when the mixture cools, spread the paste on the paper bags or cardboard andplace them strategically around the house. They arebest if hung up rather than laid down. The insectswill be attracted to the sweet smell, but will get stuckin it as soon as they land on the bag or cardboard.

Sticky liquid bottle trapsYou will need:2litre cooldrink bottle1 cup sugar3 cups water packet of yeastpiece of black paper tapeInstructionsHeat 1 cup of water until steaming hot (almost

boiling). If using a microwave, heat on high for 2 minutes.

Add 1 cup of sugar to the water and stir until itis dissolved. Continue heating the water and sugarmix. If you are using a microwave, heat on high for60 seconds.

Add another 2 cups of water and stir to make alight syrup. Take your 2liter soda bottle and measure6 inches down from the top. Draw a line around thebottle and cut the bottle apart. Pour the syrup intothe bottom half of the drink bottle. Check that thetemperature of the syrup is between 90100 degreesFahrenheit. If it isn’t, wait until it cools before movingto the next step. Open the packet of yeast and sprinkle it across the top of the syrup. Stir the yeast intothe syrup. Flip the top part of the bottle upside down, and put it into the bottom half of the bottle. It willfit snugly into the bottle. Duct tape the sides, so itdoesn’t come apart.

Put a piece of black paper around the bottle, andtape it in place. Your bottle is ready. Place it in anarea where you want to get rid of mosquitos. Mosquitos will be drawn into the bottle, but they can’t getout. You should change the liquid in the bottle aboutonce a month to ensure it stays fresh. Supplied.

FEVERHOME IMPROVEMENT

How to live in your show house>> Preparing to ‘show’ your home can be daunting, but planning is key

PROPERTYownersgettingreadyto sell usually have two majortasks— preparing their homes

to go on show and keeping it in thatcondition while still living in it.

“Andwhilethismayseemlikeatallorder, it can be done with some for-ward planning and co-ordinationwith your estate agent,” says BerryEveritt,MDoftheChas Everitt In-ternationalproperty group.

“Before youeven list yourhomeforsale, forexample, youshould startclearing out yourgarage, toolshed, spareroom and cup-boards and do-nating, sellingor throwingawayany-thing you no longer want or need. Ifyou’ve lived in your home for severalyears, it’s likely that you’ve accumu-lated a lot of extraneous ‘stuff’. If youclear this out now, your home willshowbetter–andyou’llhavea lot lessto do when you move.”

Next,hesays,youshouldaimtore-

move at least one item of furniturefrom every living room and bedroom(more if necessary) and put them instorage, along with any heavy, darkcurtains.

“You will have less things to tidyand arrangewhen your agent calls toarrange a viewing, and your homewilldefinitelyshowbetteriftherooms

appear lightand spaciousand potentialbuyerscaneasi-ly visualisethemselves liv-ing there. Clut-ter interfereswith this pro-cess.”

Writing inthe PropertySignpostsnewsletter,

Everitt says you should also makeroom to quickly put everyday thingsaway and get your home shipshapefor a viewing.

“For example, kitchen countersshould be as empty as possible whenshowing and if you can pack up someof thedishes, platesorappliancesyoudon’t regularly use and put them in

storage too, you should have room inthe cabinets for the items you do usebut need to ‘hide’ before your agentarrives with a potential buyer.

“Thesamealsoholdstrueforbath-rooms and bedrooms. Clear space soyou can keep your toiletries and cos-meticsoutof sight,andpackawayex-tra clothes, leaving only what you’rewearing this season in the cup-boards.”

Meanwhile, he says, you shouldask your agent to try to scheduleshowingswithin specific time framesifpossible, sothatyouwillknowwhenyouneed toprepyourhomeandhaveit looking itsbest forpotentialbuyers.“You obviously want to be as accom-modating as possible, but it reallyisn’trealistictotrytokeepinitpristineshowcondition24/7,especiallyifyouhave young children or pets.

“And planning some showingtimesupfrontwill allowyou to sched-ule some extra help if necessary, foraslongasyourhomeisonthemarket. If you’re really busy and your routineonly allows for housework on week-ends, it might pay to hire someone todosomeextracleaning, tidying,dust-ing, washing and ironing during theweek.”

However, Everitt notes, even ifyou’vedoneeverythingright, livinginyourhomewhile it is on themarket isbound to become a drag if it goes ontoo long, and the very best way toavoid this is to price it correctly from

thewordgo, with thehelpofa trainedand experienced estate agent who isable to provide youwith the latest in-formation about home sales in yourarea.

IAM sitting starring out of a veiled window onto redbricks, a cupcake size of clear blue sky and the occasional passerby. The bed I am on is as uncomfort

able as it can be when it is not your own. I mean whodoesn’t miss their bed when they are away. Togetherin my short termed involuntary incarceration are another two individuals whom I have hardly conversedwith, and it certainly is no fault of theirs.

Yes dear readers, I am writing this week’s articlefrom hospital where it appears I am continuing to payfor the sins of my youth. How does one get here I ask, probably by thinking we are invincible, by takingchances by being stubborn and foolish.

I recall in my youth I once climbed Table Mountainand pondered for a long time afterwards just whatpossessed me to do such a thing. I came to the realisation that by the mountain being in a city, it gave a falsesense of security. I certainly would not have even con

sidered climbing it had it been in the middle of nowhere.

Incidentally the staff here are formidable and theirprofessional demeanour is an absolute joy, sadly certain minor maintenance issues tend to put a damperand overshadow things. I have extremely evasiveveins so I was very impressed with nurses Layla as wellas Meredith who got it right the first time and whom, together with a host of others, made my stay verycomfortable. Nurse Layla went on to say that although her profession can be at times a thankless oneshe gets immense joy when she sees a sick personleave the hospital recovered and well.

During my time spent here the food has been assustainable and prepared as well as hospital foodusually is, and I have been salivating and creatingfeasts in my head to pass the long dreary times between medications and unconventional sleeping andwaking hours. What I would do for a piece of cheese.

Imagine before you a simple dish of roasted vegetables, seared tomatoes, olive oil and fresh basil andflash fried Halloumi cheese.

Roasted vegetables with Halloumi cheese andfresh basil

(Please note I have not put amounts as this depends entirely on your preferences)

Ingredients•sliced red onions•whole peeled garlic cloves bruised with flat knife

end•sliced peeled pumpkin•baby aubergines cut into half•baby marrows sliced in half•Robertsons veg spice•cocktail tomatoes•olive oil•balsamic vinegar

•fresh basil sliced and chopped•Halloumi cheese cut into batonsMethod•Preheat the oven to 180°•Place the onions, garlic, pumpkin, aubergines and

baby marrows in a large bowl, season with the spiceand add a liberal amount of olive oil and mix through, add a splash of balsamic and mix again.

•Turn out all the vegetables into a roasting pan•Reduce the oven to 130°•Place the vegetables in the oven turning occa

sionally till they are nicely coloured and cookedthrough, remove and keep warm.

•In a separate pan heat some olive oil and quicklysear the cocktail tomatoes, till the skin starts to blisterslightly add the chopped basil mix through and remove from the heat and keep warm.

•In another pan with a little olive oil gently fry theHalloumi cheese till golden on each side remove fromthe heat and keep warm.

•Arrange the vegetables in the center of a plateplace the tomatoes around the edges top with thecheese and garnish with the sliced basil. Enjoy

So remember dear readers, we are not invincibleand sometimes have to be reminded how mortal andfragile we are. as I leave the hospital with lifted spiritsand in a jubilant mood, I somehow glimpse out of thecorner of my eye the grim reaper halfheartedly wavinga see you later salute.

I am however, not perturbed and as I head for thechemisttogetmyscripts. IdecidethatwhileIamwaiting, the car needs a wash and I will treat myself toa delicious takeaway eisbein from Paulâs Tavern.

at researching what the latest tastesare, and say the colour of a vehicle isso important to customers that it canbe the difference between buying ornot.

TheDetroitsawmanyoftheclassiccolours—redsforPorschesandothersports cars— and a few less conven-tional (a Nissan Titan pick-up truckdecked out in “forged copper”).

But there was no mistaking thepre-eminence of white. Particularlyat the Volkswagen stand, where sev-eral cars, the stairs and much of thefurniture was white.

In a multibillion-dollar industry, nothing is put to chance and nothingis done by mistake, of course.

AtleasttwodesignersinDetroitre-ferredtothe“Appleeffect”—theCali-fornian tech giant — to explain thepropensity for white vehicles.

Sitting at a white table, on whitechairs, inawhiteroom,OonaScheep-ers of Volkswagen told AFP: “Whitefor cars really peaked in the 1970sand 1980s, and then all of a suddendisappeared.

“But in the past 10 years we havenoticed an increase again in white. And it definitely camewith the AppleiPod era because Apple started to doeverything with white, and a lot ofchrome or metal finishes.

“In combination it was nice and

fresh.Butbefore that, whitewas really not selling in Eu-ropebecausepeopleassoci-ateditwithdeliverycarsandit looked cheap.

“But the combination with metaland chrome looks fresh and com-pletely new.White is boomingworld-wide.”

So ifonewere tochooseablackve-hicle over a white one, what kind ofperson would that make you?

“Youcouldbesporty.Butpeople inhot countries like white.

“Whitedefinitelydeflectsheat, butif youhaveablackcar it cangetdamnhot inside. And then in a country likeSouth Africa you often have to over-take into direct, oncoming traffic, butwhite is very visible.

“So it’s a safety feature as well insomecountries.Metallicgreyorblackjustmelts into the colour of the tar, soit is not that visible.”

Susan Lampinen, chief designer, colours and materials, at Ford, saidthecolourwassocrucial tosomepeo-ple that they would buy a car purelybecause of that—nevermind the de-sign of the vehicle.

She too identified an Apple rippleeffect in propelling white to a best-seller worldwide for Ford.

“White is very clean, very techni-cal, very modern. So most cars lookgood inwhite,” shesaid, addingotherpopular colours included blacks andsilvers, while blue is also on the up.

Lampinen identified only “slightdifferences” in preferences in differ-ent countries because, she said, ofglobalisation. Environment, cultureand climate can all effectwhat colourcar someone might buy, she said.

autofever2015 BMW R 1200 RT>> Bike is leaning more to the ‘touring’ side

BMW fans are spoilt for choice whenit comes to longdistancecapablebikes – while the R 1200 RT and the

K 1600 GTL are the obvious choices, thenimble and economic ways of the F 800GT and the legendary touring capability ofthe R 1200 GS makes the touring end ofBMW’s lineup seem a tad crowded.

Which begs the question of the relevance of the RT.

When BMW introduced its new liquidcooled 1200 Boxer models to the local media earlier this year I remarked on howmuch the 2014 RT looked like the topoftherange GTL. It turns out that looks aren’t all the two bikes have in common.Keeping it low

The new RT is leaning much more to the“touring” side of the sporttouring spectrum. In my opinion, it’s lost some of thesportiness of the outgoing model butgained in terms of stability, comfort andluxury.

For one thing, the current RT feels notably heavier than its predecessor. A look atthe specifications confirmed my subjectiveimpression: the new model has gained15kg.While BMW excels at keeping each of itsbikes’ centre of gravity low, the effect ofthe additional weight is noticeable. This isnot necessarily a bad thing: while it makesthe bike a little less nimble in city riding itadds stability for highspeed, openroad, cruising.

And openroad cruising is really whatthe new RT is all about. The dynamic electronic suspension adjustment means that

the bike automatically and seamlesslycompensates for the underlying road surface – so seamlessly, in fact, that it is hardto tell at any given moment if the ride iscomfortable because the road surface isgood, or because the Dynamic ESA has adjusted itself to soak up the imperfections.Flat roue curve

The result, in conjunction with tractioncontrol and variable engine mappings, isthat you can spend more time enjoying theride and less time worrying about the road.

The weight gain is offset by an increasein power (11kg) and torque (5Nm) so theRT feels no less willing than its predecessor. BMW’s boxers have always been lauded for their lowrev torque and the new RTis no exception.

The torque curve is extremely flat andmost of it is available from just above2000rpm. This creates an extremely relaxed ride, brisk acceleration and the absolute minimum of downshifts. Overtaking intop gear, even from 60km/h, is as simpleas twisting the throttle.

Handling remains as good as on anymodern BMW. Like the GTL, this is not abike that you would itch to take on to a racetrack, but neither would it make you wantto choose the highway in favour of the scenic route.

Thelowcentreofgravityinherenttotheboxer engine makes the RT much less intimidating than its 274kg wet weightmight suggest. The RT is narrower between the rider’s legs than the GTL; whichmeans shorter riders should easily be ableto cope with its size.

Want it? BMW has probably got it.Although it’s a competent tourer, even

in standard form, BMW has an comprehensive list of accessories for it: among themare an Akropovic sport exhaust, GarminGPS that drops in to a prewired cradle, a49litre top case that can carry 10kg, ahigher windscreen and even a quickshifter.

Whatever your touring requirements, itseems BMW has preempted them.

I suspect the shift of focus towardssomething more like a smaller version ofthe K 1600 GT/GTL is a deliberatestrategyonBMW’sside.Withthe1200GSasthegoanywhere,doanything bike in its range, Idon’t think BMW had an option other than to rethinkthe RT’s positioning.Moving it upmarket as apure tourer, albeit lessexpensive and slightlywiderfocused thanthe GT/GTL, may wellhave been its smartest move. What the RTdoes is offer all the virtues of the K 1600tourers in a package that is muchmore accessibleto the averagebike buyer.

Constellations in FebruaryRADO [email protected]

Canis MajorisHIGH in the sky near the zenith

during the hot February evenings,rightofOrionyoucanfindtheconstel-lation CanisMajoris, the big dog, oneof the twohunting companions of thehunterOrion.Themostfamousobjectin the constellation is of course thestar Sirius, the brightest star in thewholesky,rivalingthebrightestplan-ets, and also one of the nearest starstousat8.6 lightyears.ThenameSiri-uscomes fromtheGreekwordseirios- from where the English word sear-ing comes. The ancient Greeks no-ticed that at the end of July, Siriusstarts to rise in themorning sky. Thiscoincides with the beginning of thedry summer in Greece and the timeforharvesthascome,hencethename- searing hot - seirios. This coinci-dencewas interpretedas causal rela-tionship between the rising of Siriusand the ripening of the harvest, theybelieved Sirius makes the harvestready. Sirius is a binary star, with themain star being twice as massive asthe Sun, and the companion a whitedwarf with the size of the Earth, butwith the mass of the Sun, whichmakes1cubiccentimeter toweigh10tonnes,comparedtothedensityoftheEarth 5.5g/cm3! The system in itscurrent stage may have appeared asa result of star cannibalization - thebigger star "ate", ripped gravitation-ally material from the smaller star. Itmighthavestartedasbothstarsbeinghot blue stars. Another strange fact

aboutwhite dwarfs is that though thegravitation is colossal the star is inequilibrium not because of the heatfrom the thermonuclear reaction inthe core as it is the casewith the Sun,(this is why the Sun doesn't collapseor increase insize -both forcescanceleachotherandtheSunstaysthesamesize), because such is missing in thedwarfs, but because of the electrondegeneracy - a process where theelectronsaresopackedup(Pauli'sex-clusion principle prevents two elec-trons to occupy the same quantum

state) that their slight motion due tothe conflict of the opposite forces ofthecolossalgravitationwhichpushesthe electrons together and electro-magnetic repulsion (theelectronsarenegatively charged) keeps the dwarffromcollapsing. Even if the tempera-ture continues to fall down, as thereis no thermonuclear reaction creat-ing heat in the core, and the whitedwarf cools down continuously, evenwhenreachingabsolutezero, thestarwill still produce energy. Because ofthisfact, thoughthetemperaturemay

be 3-4000 degrees if you touch it, itwill not burn your hand at all, sincethe electrons are so packed up thattheycan'tinteractwithyourhandandburn it, thouyour stove, which isonly250C will burn it.

Such incredible facts made thepeople who were dished the news ofits discovery in 1914 to exclaim -"Shut up! There is no such thing!"

According to contemporary sci-ence our own Sun in future will turnto a white dwarf when the fuel in thecore is exhausted.

TheopticallydoublestarBSC2764is one of the most beautiful even insmall binoculars, comprising of coolyellowandhotbluestars,whichhow-everarenotgravitationallyboundbutwe see it double because of the sameline of direction.

The open cluster M41 is in size asbig as the moon, very faint, barelyseen with naked eye, but a nice viewin small telescopes or binoculars.

Canis Majoris is home also of thebiggest star, VY Canis Majoris. Thisred hypergiant is so incredibly huge, that if replaced with the Sun, will beso big as to stretch beyond the orbitof Saturn, its diameter being3Billionkms, compare the Sun's "mere" 1.4Million! You need to line 2140 Sunsside by side to reach its size. It is alsovery thin, with density only0.00000001g/sm3 - 100 milliontimes thinner than the Sun. Its tem-perature is much lower than the Sun- only 3500K and continues to cooland lose brightness. It can be seenwith the help of a star map and evensmall binoculars. VY is 3900 lightyears away.

South Coast salt waterfishing forecast>> Season is characterised by ‘couta

JANUARY is a fantastic time forgame fishing along the KZNSouth Coast. The ‘couta will

have started moving down to usagain – hopefully wewill catch evena portion of the huge fish taken onski-boats last year – most notablydown south of Port Edward, in theTranskei.

The beginning of the season is

normally characterised by shoal‘couta, or “darts”.These fishused tocome through in huge shoals, butlast year there were literally no“darts” caught.

This can be a worry as it seemsthat over the past few decades, the“darts” have petered off. It could bethat we have missed a few genera-tions due to over-fishing elsewhere

in the Indian Ocean, but either way,we have to watch our ‘couta fisheryvery carefully, or it will disappear.

NatalSnoek(QueenMackerel)al-so favour this timeof the year on theKZNSouth Coast – they can actuallybe caught year-round in our waters– but from now until winter, we canhope to encounter them in shoalsand on the feed. Queen Mackerelgenerally enjoy the sameconditionsas ‘couta. They are easily caught onsmall feathers and spoons, and

when they are on, they are on.Then our favourite summer

game fish – the delicious Dorado, just love the brown-bluewater line/seam created as the Mozambiquecurrent forces the lighternear-freshwater against the coastline. Theyhunt in shoals or pairs up anddownthis line, and like the Snoek, whentheydecide it’s timeto feed, theywillsmash anything that moves. Just asardine, a skirt and a single hook isall you need to get a taste of “the

chicken of the sea”.And then chasing their favourite

food, the Dorado, are the billfish.January is certainly billfish time

for us down here… big blues andblacks pop up all over the place –cruising and hunting in the warmwater conditions. Striped marlinand sailfish swim in shoals this timeof the year also. Last year we en-countered a shoal of about 20StripedMarlin–rightofftheUmzim-kulu River bridge. Put a live Bonitoin thewater this timeof theyearandyou will not have very long to wait!

Garrick will still be around butmainly more spread out and spora-dic,havingdonetheirchaoticbreed-ing thing late last year.

The odd Kob might still surprisea late-night fishermanand theGeel-bek are also known tomove into theshallows at night time.
