Sunday blackout>> KwaDukuza will have no electricity for five hours to accommodate essential repairs

JYOTHI LALDAS

KWADUKUZAwillexperienceato-tal electricity shut downbetween6am and 11am on Sunday.

Asa result of copper theft at thePointofSupply(POS)inGledhow,KwaDukuzaMunicipality (KDM) is forced to under-take major repairs at the POS to avoidmajor electrical failure during the fes-tive season.

At a media briefing at POS on Mon-day,KDM’s infrastructureand technicalportfolio chairperson Sandeep Ou-dhramsaidKDM,with the assistance ofcontractors, will undertake the replace-ment of a switchgear.

“Theswitchgear, inanelectricpowersystem, is the combination of electricaldisconnect switches, fuses or circuitbreakers used to control, protect andisolate electrical equipment.

“At the moment the quality of elec-tricity supply is compromised. Now theurgency of this repair arises becausecurrently their is no breaker to protectthe system from a complete failurein the event of amalfunction, say for ex-ample,on theGlenhillspower line,” saidOudhram.

He said in the event of a fault such aslightning damage on the Glenhills line,a surge of power will be sent directly tothe POS.

“Now, because there is no switch-gear, since we removed the damagedone, there is no control over the surge. It will go directly to the supply from Es-komand shut down the entire electricalsupply for all areas within the KwaD-ukuza Municipality.”

Oudhram said they cannot afford forthis kind of damage especially duringthe festive season because it will causea total blackout in KwaDukuza and allother areas within the municipality forno less than 24 hours.

“Wecannot allow this tohappenwhenmost residents are on leave during thefestive season so it is imperative thatwe get these repairs done immediate-ly,” said Oudhram.

KDM have already notified resi-dents about the shut down via adver-tisements in local media.

AccordingtoNickHall,KDMdirect-or of electrical services, full mainte-nance of the power systemwill also beundertaken during the shut down.

Sappi shuts downallegations of toxic spill>> Clarification of reports regarding discolouration of the uMvoti River

JYOTHI LALDAS

SAPPIStangerhasbeen in thespotlight re-cently following allegations of a toxic ef-fluent spill into the uMvoti River.

The current discolouration of the uMvoti Riverprompted assumptions of a toxic spill.

However, Sappi Stanger general managerBev Sukhdeo is adamant that these allegationsare untrue.

“There have not been any untoward excur-sions or exceedances by the mill with regardsto its effluent, so contrary towhat has been re-ported in local media, we can state unequivo-cally that there has not been any toxic spill ofeffluent from the Sappi Stanger mill into the

low flowconditions, the river bed is visible andwhen observed, can be seen as dark in nature.

“The odour andappearance of the river areunfortunatelynegativeaesthetic side-effectsofthelow-flowconditions;however,otherfactorshave played a role in exacerbating this condi-tion.”

The mill is in the process of installing FineBubbleDiffuserTechnology to try and improvethe impact of its effluent into the river.

“The implementation of this technologyshows positive results on waste water treat-mentoperations,citingreducedodourfromtheprocesses as well as reduced chemical oxygendemand in the effluent,” the statement said.

In order to allow for the installation of thefine bubble diffusers, an existing unit in the la-goon had to be relocated.

Sappi claims during the relocation phaseand the commissioning phase, the mill antici-patedaslight increase inodourandaslightde-crease in effluent quality and notified the De-partment of Water Affairs accordingly.

a bath tub, thus saving up to 400 litresa week.>> Use low-flow showerheads, dual-flush toilet mechanisms and water-ef-ficient washing machines.>> Kettles should not be filled to thebrim, but they should contain justenough water for your needs.

This will reduce your electricity billas well.>> Don’t over-fill containers like cook-ing pots as thismay result in the use ofmore energy to heat the water.>>Reducingthetoilet flushvolumecanalone save 20% of total water con-sumption. This can be done by putting

IT is incomprehensible that in excessof R200 000 was squandered on abeach music party at BlythedaleBeach this past weekend.

The KwaDukuza Municipality isallegedly bordering on being bank-rupt, according to sources, and nowsquander money on projects such as

this.The towns, especially Stanger,

is in a shocking condition.Apart from shamefully squander-

ing of our ratepayers’ funds, the ma-jority of people came in Durban andMaphumulo registered vehicles.

There was zero toilet facilities, ze-

ro policing and the people were usingpeople’s private property lawns to re-lieve themselves. A total disgrace.

The municipality needs to makea public apology for the misuse ofrates especially in view of the circum-stances.

The municipality must be held re-

sponsibleforthetotalmisuseofrate-payers’ funds.

It is time for rate payers to consid-er withholding rates.

THE horrific death of three-year-oldJamie Naidoo has cast the spotlighton the shocking incidences of childabuse that we, in Child Welfaremovement, face on a daily basis.

There has been wide scale con-demnation and with it the appor-tioning of blame. If there is blame tobe apportioned, then we as a com-munity in general should take collec-

the plight that the Child and FamilyWelfare Societies face with regardsto insufficient funding to fulfill itsmandate.

Thefundingthatsocieties receiveby way of Subsidy from the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Social Devel-opment ranges between 47 to 52percent of the organisation’s operat-ing costs.

The deficit has to be met throughfundraising initiatives. This issue hasbeen raised on numerous platformsboth provincially and nationally withlittle or no success.

The Child Welfare Societies are

volunteer driven and it is through theselfless service of these child welfareactivists that these societies are ableto operate under trying circumstan-ces.

The death of young Jamie Naidooand other children around the coun-try should be the clarion call for usto act by volunteering our services toChild and Family Welfare organisa-tions in our areas.

As we observe 16 days of no vio-lence against women and children, let us remember those that havetragically lost their lives due toabuse.

Our heartfelt condolences goout to the family of Jamie Naidoo

My beloved husband, our precious father, granddad and brother. You left an empty house,an empty chair, a father’s love, no longer there.A broken heart, tear filled eyes.God broke our hearts to prove to us he onlytakes the best. The times we shared, the laughs we had.Things we miss when we think of you.Forever to be cherished are the treasures ofthe past, for they’ll always be kept alive in ourhearts and hen the treasures go, we’ll fondlyremember the joy that they brought in ourmemories forever.Life will never be the same without you,We will always love you, Dad.

Sadly missed by your wife, Lutchmee, children, grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughters-in-lawand sisters.

“The ix35 has been one of the strongestpillars in Hyundai Automotive SA’s vehiclerange, and when we were given the oppor-

tunity to bring the 1.7 Premium turbodieselto the South African customers, there wasno hesitation.

“We expect this derivative to appeal toan SUV buyer who is looking for the bene-fits of a frugal turbodiesel engine, but ata more affordable price and with a specifi-cation level that still offers the luxury driv-ing experience that made the ix35 a top-seller for us,” says Stanley Anderson, mar-keting director of Hyundai Automotive SA.

In the engine bay of the ix35 1.7 Premi-um is a four-cylinder engine that delivers85 kW peak power at 4 000 rpm, and asolid 260 Nm peak torque in a range be-tween 1 250 and 2 750 rpm.

An improved six-speed gearbox withslightly different ratios than that of itstwo-litre turbodiesel partner delivers thepower to the front wheels. Its top speedhas been clocked at 173 km/h, and acceler-ation from standstill to 100 km/h takes12,4 seconds.

The exterior picture is rounded off with17-inch alloy wheels with a gun-metal fin-ish.
