PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Our Education Week event was a true celebration of all that is good about public education. The weather was brilliant, the student leaders ran the assembly with precision and the items on show were indicative of the great extracurricular activities our school provides. I must make particular mention of the students in Years 5 and 6 who performed the dances they have been learning in the DanceSport Challenge groups. This program, undertaken for the first time this year, challenges students to move out of their comfort zones, to build self- confidence, respect for others and a sense of empowerment from working hard and persevering with something new and challenging. It was very affirming to see that many who were nervous and hesitant showed true grit and a sense of not letting the team down. I must thank the parents who supported this program, encouraged their children to participate and then attend on the Open Day. You are doing your children a real service for later years. The Peer Support Leader training has been completed and we look forward to the program commencing on Friday, 18 August. This program, for parents new to the school, involves Year 6 students, as leaders, running small K-5 mixed groups of students in weekly pre-planned activities. Mrs Cameron (6C), Mrs Rowland (6R) and Mrs Walker (5/6AW), with Mrs Horinek supporting in the training, have worked hard to bring this program to all students and we thank them for their efforts. The program runs for 5 weeks. This Friday, weather permitting; the semi-finals for Season 2 PSSA will be held, which means we need to prepare for Season 3 of PSSA which commences on Friday, 1 September. Our two trial sessions for Season 3 PSSA (Cricket, Touch Football, Softball, AFL and Tennis) have been scheduled for Thursday, 24 August and Friday, 25 August. The criteria we have developed for each sport, based on the skills needed to play the game at a competitive level and PDHPE syllabus outcomes, will be used to judge students for selection. There will be two teachers supporting the selection of students for each sport and, as always, the students will be keen and eager to make a team which, unfortunately, has limited spaces. I ask you to please respect the decisions of the staff involved in these selections. Your support is extremely important in terms of helping our students to deal with possible disappointment and to bounce back from disappointment….indeed to build resilience! WRITING AWARDS

Congratulations to Lilli Howell, Tia McEvoy-Vales and Catalina Allport from 4PS for great descriptive writing in their ‘Colour’ poems.

Writing samples can be viewed on the Writer’s Wall of Fame near the School Office.

NAPLAN ONLINE As you may be aware planning has begun for the National Assessment Program-Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) to move from a pen and paper assessment to an online assessment. In order to facilitate this process NSW schools will be participating in a School Readiness Test between Monday, 14 August and the end of term. At Panania PS we have selected the week from Monday, 21 August to Friday, 25 August to do this “practice run.” Please note that this is not an assessment of student ability. The readiness test will allow us to become familiar with the online format and processes for administration of it. Also, we will be able to check that we have the technical capacity, rooms and devices to administer NAPLAN Online effectively. If you are interested in becoming more familiar with this, there is a NAPLAN Online demonstration site that includes sample tests for each NAPLAN year at the following link: http://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/naplan-online/naplan-online-public-demonstration-site Ms Adams and Mrs Apostolovski have both received whole day training on this initiative and are our school based NAPLAN Administrators.

P&C REPORT At our last meeting on Monday, 7 August, the election of a second Vice President occurred with Mr Cameron Lewis (Charlotte in 5/6AW and Sophie in 3M) now filling the vacant position. Congratulations Cameron. The Canteen Committee met on Wednesday, 9 August with a few items needing to be reported to the school community, as follows:

Soup will be available to order for lunch each Monday (pumpkin) and Thursday (a surprise which will be displayed on the canteen whiteboard) at a cost of $3.

Healthy, fresh sorbet is now available at a cost of $1

The Canteen Committee are working hard to plan for the implementation of the NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy. This strategy is just one of the Healthy Children Initiative programs which form part of the NSW Government’s commitment to reducing childhood overweight and obesity. All schools are required to transition to this strategy by the end of 2019. P & C Committee.

Smart Tags now come in new school

jumpers and hats!

The Panania Public School P&C Uniform Shop is excited to announce that over the next three months, our school will be participating in a free trial with RagTagd, a young start-up company that helps parents find lost property at school. Finally, a way to get on top of that mound of lost jumpers, jackets and hats!

How it works: Whenever your Smart Tagged garment reaches lost property, you will receive an automated SMS (text message) notifying you that it’s there, making retrieval quick and easy. In fact, collection is so simple that 90% of families using RagTagd at other schools get their lost property within a day of receiving an SMS.

How parents can take part: 1. New jumpers and hats in the Uniform Shop come

with Smart Tags already attached at no additional cost during the 3-month trial. All you need to do is send a single SMS to link the tag to your mobile number, and you are ready to go.

2. Get free Smart Tags during the 3-month trial, from the Uniform Shop, to sew into jackets, jumpers and hats you already own.

What to do: To make sure you receive notifications, remember to activate your Smart Tag upon purchase and RagTagd will do the rest.

What others say: RagTagd is up and running at 75 large schools in NSW and QLD. Search this link https://youtu.be/3BAP-UBDLaQ to check out how RagTagd has been received at just one Sydney Primary School.

Did you know? 1. Smart Tags are completely safe, like the credit card in

your pocket. 2. Smart Tags can be re-registered for second-hand sales

and hand-me-downs. 3. Smart Tags will cost $3.50 per tag after the 3-month

trial.

MASTERCHEF CLASSES Last Monday, 7 August, thirteen Year 5 students attended our second visit to Sir Joseph Banks High School to participate in the Joey’s Masterchef Primary Partners Program. The students had a wonderful time cooking with Miss Arms (from SJBHS), each making their own delicious pizzas and yummy choc chip cookies. Miss Arms named Jemima Rawcliffe ‘Chef of the Day’ for her excellent cooking skills.

BATTLE OF THE ARTS 2017 Last Tuesday, 1 August Alexia Bebedellis 6C, Grace Janssen 6C, Lily Thompson 5/6 AW and Jemima Rawcliffe 5/6 AW attended the 2017 Battle of the Arts at Sarah Redfern High School. 100 primary school students from Bankstown, Campbelltown, Fairfield, Glenfield, Liverpool, Macarthur and neighbouring networks participated in the day. The primary schools battled it out, participating in creative art challenges over the course of the day. The theme for 2017 was “Where the Wild Things Are.” Students were required to work collaboratively as a team for each of the four challenges across the day. The battles were Ceramics, Painting with Scissors (Collage), Sculpture and Mask Making. The four girls were amazing in their efforts, each bringing a unique aspect to the tasks. All girls were positive representatives for Panania Public School and enjoyed participating in this wonderful Visual Arts initiative. Congratulations! Miss M Parkes & Miss C Simpson, Coordinators.

WOOLWORTH’S EARN & LEARN Once again, Panania PS is participating in the Woolworth’s Earn & Learn program. The program runs until Tuesday, 19 September. We hope that family and friends who shop in Woolworths will collect the stickers for our school. In previous years our school has been able to redeem thousands of dollars worth of equipment. Sticker sheets and the collection box are located in the School Office foyer. Thank you for your support.
