    Abstract

This research is aimed to gather and analyze the opinions of the Sunway Campus

students, lecturers and staff to determine their film preference. Age and gender generally are the

influencing factors in audience film preference. The first phase of the study is to determine

which film genres are more appealing in Sunway Campus. A survey was conducted among 100

participants ranged from ages 18 to 41 and above. To support our survey, a questionnaire was

designed to aid in determining the influence of age and gender in audience preference. The

findings showed that gender plays a significant role while age plays a secondary role in film

preference. The respondents felt that the appearance, attitude and personality of the actors in the

film are extremely important in the choice of action films compared to the 3D effects, computer

generated (CG) animation and explosive scene. The respondents also felt that the portrayal of

true love, sacrifice, and companionship in films plays a more defining role in their choice for

romantic films compared to the attraction of the opposite sex, dating process and the anticipation

for a happy ever after ending. The final phase of the research involves analyzing the data and

coming to a conclusion that the most popular film genre is action instead of drama while age and

gender cannot be applied to certain films like animation.

    Chapter 1: Introduction

A British inventor, William Friese Greene, who patented the process in 1890, invented

the first moving picture in Hyde Park (The Royal Park, 2012). Since then, more and more

foreign and domestic films are played in the cinema over the countries. The film industry has

developed into a multi-billion enterprise, earning about 10.6 billion U.S. dollar in 2010 (Business

Careers in Entertainment Association, 2012). Motion picture films have had a significant impact

on the arts, technology and politics.

Film makers produce different genres to accommodate the preferences of audiences.

According to Fischoff (1997), which genre of film a person favors is a good forecaster of which

all-time favorite films titles a person will cite. Fischoff (1997) study also showed that the most

popular film genres are drama, comedy, action-adventure, romance and sci-fi or fantasy. Film

preference which is consistent with gender is what Fischoffs 1997 study exposed. It was

expected that comparable results would be found in the present study (Fischoff, 1997).

According to Chausson (2010), various film genres elicit different response between the two

sexes. Males prefer action or adventure genres, whilst females like romance or drama. The

purpose of this research is to find out which film genres are more appealing in Sunway

    University College.

    Methodology

Having established our purpose in our research which is to determine the popularity of

various film genres on Sunway Campus and the factors influencing the choice, it is now

necessary to reflect upon how evidence is to be collected to support this research. Among the

various approaches to social research, the quantitative method of asking questions through

questionnaires is used as it is the most ubiquitous form of human communication (Kipling 1903).

The questionnaires consisted of 7 closed ended questions and 3 open ended questions. The

combination of both direct and indirect questioning approaches is recommended by Jo, Nelson

and Kiecker (1997) as effective tools in obtaining more detailed results from the investigation.

Therefore this combination is used to solicit responses on the respondents film preference and

    the factors influencing their choice.

The research is conducted among a sample of 100 respondents from Sunway Campus in

Selangor. The data is collected through a stratified sampling procedure to obtain optimum

allocation of samples. Sunway Campus is populated by students and staffs aged 18 to 41 and

above. 40 questionnaires are then administered to two age group which range from 36-40 and 41

and above. The remaining questionnaires are then administered randomly with an interval of 4

people to undergraduates, postgraduates and foundation students as well as staff aged below 36.

The entire survey is conducted among an equal distribution of 50 males and 50 females to avoid

gender discrepancies issue in the research.

Closed ended questions collected in the survey are treated as data which is then tabulated

into bar graph and table form to assist in the research analysis process. Meanwhile, open ended

questions are analyzed critically to form a generalized opinion to assist in suggesting a

    recommendation for our report.

    Literature Review

A study on film preference by Fischoff (1994) among 2078 candidates over a 5 year

period indicate that the most famous film genres were, in order of ranking, drama, comedy,

action-adventure, romance and the combined category of science fiction/fantasy. This review

discusses the influence of gender and age on film preference and its underlying misconception as

well as its limitation. The beliefs, views and attitudes promoted by many researchers to this topic

are critically examined to provide a better understanding of the research.

In his study, Fischoff (1994) suggested that female oriented films generally revolve

around romance genres while male oriented films centers on action genres. He argues that it is

not only the male oriented films which contain action genres but the female oriented films do as

well. He goes on to that, not all female oriented films are romance genres. The key determinants

in women oriented films are portrayal of a female point of view (Mildered Pierce, The Piano),

females shown as the clear protagonist or films which revolves around women issue. In contrast,

male oriented films tend to focus more on action, competition for the alpha position or sex rather

than romance. Fischoff discussion of gender differences in film preferences is also consistent

with Abrams & Hogg (1990) Social Identity Theory which also supported the idea that media

viewing is used as a form of social identity gratification. In a similar research, The British Film

Institute also known as B.F.I. (2011) conducted a survey among 2036 UK adults aged 15 to 74 to

examine the impact of films toward the U.K. culture. Through the report, male respondents

exhibit a greater preference toward science fiction, action/adventure, and horror films while

female prefer romance films, family based films and romantic drama.

Besides gender playing a critical role in audience film preference, many theorists like

Eijck (2005) and Oliver (1993) had also insisted that age is another factor, albeit secondary when

  • 7/31/2019 Ffffffff English

    5/26

determining film preference. The British Film Institute (2011) also discovered that younger

respondents are more likely to be attracted toward horror, comedy and animation films whereas

older respondents prefer documentaries film, classical film and drama film. However B.F.I.

concluded that age only plays a secondary role when determining an individual film preference

whereas gender is the dominating factor behind audience preference, though preferences for

classic, animated and documentary films are decided by age alone. B.F.I. also discovered that

age and gender cannot be applied to film categories that are not shown in mainstream cinema.

Fischoff (1990) paper also supported that even though age may not be a significant variable but it

is noteworthy that age groups differed rather substantially in their tastes for action-adventure,

drama, horror and murder/thriller genres. A study by Lewis (1997) to determine age as a factor in

audience film preference, examined that older people generally are more experience with

evolving filmmaking styles than younger people. Since the mind withholds images, feelings and

attitudes or styles present at the time of an experience, it is expected that older people will have a

range of favorite films which span a far wider period of time than younger people.

An interesting discovery by Fischoff (1993) is the inter-relation between gender and age.

Although the British Film Institute found no evidence of such existence, Fischoff (1993) research

insisted that although older age group prefers drama and romance over action-adventure genres

as compared to their younger counterpart, it depends on the gender of the age group. This finding

is fairly consistent with the writings of Erikson (1959) and his theory of life span development

which theorized that as male aged, they will seek for companionship instead of their satisfaction

for lust. On the contrary, female continue to seek out companionship and security regardless of

age. In addition, Fischoff (1993) research also concluded that women reveal fairly consistent

preferences across age groups for comedies based films and romance based films. Therefore, age

  • 7/31/2019 Ffffffff English

    6/26

as a factor is more prevalent among the male gender when determining film preference. To

further support this stand, Fischoff (1994) conducted a survey of 2046 samples which exhibited

that male change their preference for romance films as they aged while women preference for

romance films remain largely unchanged regardless of age.

However, there are certain limitations to the amount of influence age and gender had on

audience film preference. A study by Chausson (2010) who uses a data sample set of 29,197 UK

Facebook users aged 16-25 to determine the role of gender in film preference, founded that the

degree of gender difference in film preference depends on the film genres itself. The most

striking difference is found within the romance category while action is the next most sexually

differentiated category. However, it was rather astonishing that gender difference in horror film

is non-existent. Chausson concluded that although most theorists like Oliver (1998) and Fischoff

(1993-1994) insisted upon male alleged partiality to violent films as opposed to female inherent

dislike of them, not all horror film represent elements of violence therefore their theory cannot be

applied in this category. Based on Chausson (2010) research, it can be concluded that although

gender is the leading factor behind film preference, there are certain film genres like horror and

animation films that are not affected by gender.

This chapter had inspected and analyzed the leading film genres which are found

appealing to the general film audience aged between 15 to 75 years old. It has also highlighted

the factors influencing the targeted group film preference and the limitations and invalidity of

both age and gender upon certain film genres and scenario. A general impression can be drawn

that gender plays the most critical role in determining film preference with age being a secondary

factor while certain film genres like horror and animation negate the theory of gender differences

    in film preference.

Younger people in general watch films more often, based on the Motion Picture

Association of America also known as MPAA report (2010), numbers of frequent filmgoers,

which are the one who go more than once a month, in the coveted demographic of the age group

between 18 and 24, females make up 3.4 million filmgoers while males make up 3.1 million. It

can be seen from the graphs, most of the female respondents in Sunway Campus from different

age group watch films more often than male respondents.

From figure 1 and figure 2, older respondents watched films less frequently compared to

their younger counterpart. This could be explained through a similar research by Lewis (1997)

who discovered that the mind withholds images, feelings and attitudes present at the time of an

experience, therefore it is expected that older people have experienced a wider range of films.

Hence older respondents are more selective on their film choice based on their past experience.

According to The New Yorks Times (2009), those ages 25 to 34 spend the most time watching

DVD or VCR videos while people ages 45 to 65 years old spends more time on email and watch

the most live TV. This shows that age group between 18 and 25 for both male and female

respondents of Sunway Campus students and staffs have the frequency of watching films either

several times a week or once a month.

Based on figure 3 and figure 4, most of the Sunway Campus students and staff from

different age group watch at least one film per month. Based on the graph tabulated, the male

respondents who are in the age range of 26 to 30 years old and the female respondents in the

range of 36 to 40 years old, watch only 1 to 2 film(s) per month. According to Logarta (2012),

men put more priority on their career than on their personal lives which may mean that they do

not have much time for leisure time for films. Also, based on Mitchell (2012) , females

generally struggle to balance between career and home life which also indicate that they do not

have much time for leisure too .

Figure 5 shows percentage of gender in Sunway Campus on their film genre preference.

The top ranking genres are action/adventure, comedy and drama respectively while the least

popular is the fantasy genre. It is interesting to note that action/adventure genre also contains the

largest volume of male respondents amounting to 40%. This is consistent with the research by

Fischoff (1994) which supported the idea that action/adventure films are generally more

appealing to the male audience. The reason why men would naturally find action/adventure film

more appealing to them is because they would feel more energetic and stronger after action films

which mostly have a male gender bias. They are also always eager for a new and wild experience

as it is usually the central topics of the film in this genre. (Nguyen, 2005)

Overall, it is shown in figure 5 that preferences of action/adventure film have the highest

percentage in Sunway Campus. This is inconsistent with the finding from other researches like

Fischoff (1994) , Oliver (1998) and British Film Institute (2011) who all had insisted that drama

film is the most preferred genre. Our findings might be caused by the age gap present within our

research sample as there are more younger than older respondents (70:30). We believed that

younger respondents viewed action/adventure films as a way to seek out their social identity

which is on par with the theory of social identity by Abrams & Hogg (1990).

Figure 6 Male film genre preferences according to age

Based on figure 6, it can be observed that younger male respondents between the age

group of 18 to 25 and 26 to 30 are more attracted to action/adventure film. However the figure

also supported Fischoff (1994) research that as male aged, they tend to shift their choice toward

drama film. This can be explained by applying the theory of life-span development by Erikson

(1959) who supported the idea that as male aged, they prefer to emulate the value of

companionships rather than satisfying their need for lust. It can also be concluded that older male

respondents prefer to view films that instil values of wisdom rather than films displaying

physical power hence the shift from action/adventure film to drama film.

According to the graph female preference for comedy genre doesnt change adversely

throughout their course of life. Fischoff (1994) research also arrive at a similar juncture that

female preference for comedy is not adversely affected by age. However the results for female

preference toward romance films contradicts the findings from Fischoff (1994) research. As

shown in the graph above, female preference for romance films increase as they aged rather than

being consistent throughout their life. Further analysis and investigation show that younger

female counterparts are unable to differentiate between comedies based romance film and drama

based romance film, therefore leading to a lower amount of expected votes for the romance

category in their respective age group.

    Table 1.0

The table above is prepared based on our survey to determine the most popular film genre

among the top three film genres which is action, drama and sci-fi. The Avengers and Mission

Impossible series are used to represent the action genres as both titles are critically acclaimed

action films (CARA, 2012) while Saving Private Ryan and Lord of the Ring Trilogy are both

films which contain significant drama content. Lastly both Star Wars Series and Avatar are the

new and old faces of the Sci-fi film genres. Both films achieved a rating of 95 and above out of

100 according to Metacritic (2011), therefore are suitable candidates to represent the sci-fi genre

    in our research.

It is interesting to note that in our research, action film claimed the throne among the

three genres as opposed to what is claimed by Fischoff (1994) papers who stated that drama is

the most popular genre of all. This could be largely due to the overwhelming popularity of the

Avengers film that occupies half of the total number of respondents who preferred action film. It

is a relatively new film capable of capturing younger audiences while being relevant to the older

audiences as it is based on a similar television series in 1960. The lack of votes in the drama film

section could also be caused by the film Saving Private Ryan which most respondents

misinterpreted it as a war-time documentary instead of a drama film filled with emotions and

tragedies of the landings in Omaha Beach. According to the table in appendix 1.0, there is a

gender gapbetween the amount of male respondents who had watch Saving Private Ryan and

the female respondents. Since the film possessed a war-time documentary image, the gap could

be explained by the lack of female preference toward war time documentary as stated in Oliver

    (1998) report.

The tables presented (table 2.0, table 3.0, table 4.0 and table 5.0) shows both female and

male respondents reasons for viewing action and romantic films. Based on table 2.0, female are

more attracted to the appearance, attitude and personality of action film stars which drove them

to watch action film. The table also shows that age doesnt play a huge role since there is

consistency of votes across the entire age spectrum. This finding is in line with Eijck (2000)

research which discovered that females are drawn by the sense of security portrayed by action

film stars rather than the explosive stunts in the film.

Table 3.0 clearly show that the majority of female respondents view romantic films to

experience the portrayal of true love in the film. By reviewing Fischoff (1994) research which

also came across a similar finding, a conclusion can be drawn that female are enamored toward

    romance film regardless of age.

Table 4.0 display the reason which influence male choice for action films. As predicted

by various researchers and theorist like Chausson (2000) and Fischoff (1993) in their reports,

male respondents are inherently drawn to the explosive and intense nature of action films.

Lastly through table 5.0, it is interesting to note that there are two different approaches

when assessing male preference for romantic films. At a younger age, male respondents are more

influenced by the attraction of the opposite sex while as they aged, male respondents began to

shift their reasons into the portrayal of true love and sacrifice present in the films. This can be

explained by referring to Erikson (1959) life span development theory which states that as male

aged, they are more concerned with companionship rather than lust.

    Conclusion

Successful finding notwithstanding, the design of our research may be challenged due to

the unequal amount of students and staffs samples in our research. As a result certain areas of our

research are not entirely similar to the findings discovered by various researchers across the

world like Fischoff (1994), Berger (1990), Lewis (1997) and Chausson (2010). Firstly, our

ranking of film preference differs slightly as action/adventure instead of drama film, is the most

favourite film genre. This as discussed earlier in our analysis could be caused by design of our

research as younger respondents prefer action/adventure films more than drama films.

Additionally, when the respondents are required to select the most favourite film genre

among three of the highest ranking film genre (action/adventure, drama and science-fiction), they

shifted their votes toward action/adventure being the top ranking film genre while drama being

the least favourite. Through our analysis from the survey, we found that it is true that both male

and female lived in two different end of the spectrum when it comes to film preference. We also

discovered that this gender polarization is more geared toward the younger respondents. Our

research also shows that male respondents are more sensitive towards the age factor in their

choice for both action and romantic films while female are largely unaffected by age in their

choice. Therefore we can conclude that gender is the defining factor which influences an

individual film choice while age plays a secondary supporting role. The same conclusion can

also be found by the research conducted by the British Film Institute (2011).

    Findings

Throughout our research, there are many other common reasons given by the respondents

in the survey form for going to a film and also liking a film. Our research also discovered that

age and gender is not the only deciding factor toward an individual film choice.

These some of the reasons to go for a film:

    1) Recommendation from a friend or website. Today, many films are released at thesame time, so filmgoers would get a recommendation from their friends or the film

rating website for example Imbd.com on which film to go for first.

    2) Comparing the film with the story book. Many films derived from story bookadaptations which will likely lead to a slight change in the storyline and characters.

Therefore they would want to compare the films with the book that they have read for

    example The Hunger Games.

    3) Finishing the series. Films produced today mostly have a continuation episode forexample the recent Men in Black 3 film, so filmgoers would just go to a film for the

    sake of finishing the series.

    4) The trailer of the film. Most of the filmgoers go for a film based on the excitementlevel, content and storyline revealed in a films trailer.

  • 7/31/2019 Ffffffff English

    20/26

These are some of the reasons that made them like the film:

    1) Younger respondents are more prone toward films with direct storyline without muchmeaning hidden in between the lines while older respondents relish films which

    contains underlying values and lessons.

    2) It stands out from the other film from the same genre. A unique plot and the way oftelling a story in films will exclude itself from a clich scene which will surprise the

filmgoers. For example, the film Time Travelers wife , a romance genre film which

shows interesting sci-fi event instead of the typical love story.
