This is Kanata. He has a new neighbor from the United States.
“Hello. I’m Kanata. What’s your name?”
“My name is Daniel. Nice to meet you, Kanata.”
“Nice to meet you too. I’m six years old. How old are you?”
“I’m seven years old. I’m a first grader.”
“Oh, me too!”
“Great! Come on, Kanata. I’ll show you my room.”
“Okay.”

There are a lot of books in Daniel’s room.
“Wow! You have so many books.”
“Yes. I like reading. This one is my favorite. Do you want to read it?”
“The Adventures in Magic Land . It looks difficult.”
“Don’t worry, Kanata. Your English is very good.”
“Thank you, but I want to be a world-famous tennis player. So, I have to work harder at English.”
“Cool! I can help you.”
“Thank you.”

Just then, the book begins to shine.
“What’s going on, Daniel?”
“I don’t know!”
The pages start to flip by themselves.
“Oh, no!”
The book pulls them in!

Kanata and Daniel find themselves in the woods.
“Where are we, Daniel?”
“I don’t know. But it feels familiar.”
Then, they see a fairy. It flies towards them.
“Hello. I’m Ella. Welcome to Magic Land.”
“What? Magic Land? Are we . . . Are we inside the book?”
“Yes, you are! Come on! I’ll take you to the wizard.”

The wizard lives deep in the woods.
“Hello, boys,” says the wizard. “I heard your wish. You want to be better at English. Is that right?”
“Yes, that’s right.”
“Well, I think we can help you.”
The wizard takes out a piece of parchment.
“Here’s the first task for you. When you complete ten tasks, your English will be great.”
“All right,” says Kanata. “I’ll try to do all of them.”
“And I’ll help you,” says Daniel.

The first task is to help Mr. Munch Munch.
Ella takes Kanata and Daniel to his house.
“Oh, my leg hurts!” cries Mr. Munch Munch. “I can’t move.”
“We’re here to help. What can we do?”
“I’m hungry. I want some pizza!”
“Okay . . . Here you are.”
“Munch, munch, munch. Mmm.” Mr. Munch Munch eats up the pizza in a second.
“I’m still hungry! I want some spaghetti!”

“I’m hungry! I want some fries!” “Okay.”“Now I’m thirsty! I want some milk!” “Here’s some.”“I’m hungry! I want some sandwiches!” “Okay.”“I’m thirsty! I want some apple juice!” “Okay.”“I’m hungry! I want some ice cream!” “Okay.”
Mr. Munch Munch eats and eats and eats.And he drinks and drinks and drinks.

Finally, Mr. Munch Munch is full.
“Are you hungry? Are you thirsty?” asks Kanata.
“No, I’m not!”
“Are you happy?” asks Daniel.
“Yes, I am. Thank you, kids.”

Just then, the book shines again.
“Oh, look!”
A little star appears on the cover.
“You did it!” says Ella.
The star sparkles.
“We did it!” say the boys.

Suddenly they are back in Daniel’s room.
“Oh, I’m home!” says Daniel. “We’re back.”
“Look at the book!” says Kanata. “The star is still here. It’s like magic.”
“It is magic! It’s a magic book.”
“Daniel! Kanata!”
“Oh, that’s Mom. We’re coming! Come on, Kanata. I’m hungry!”
“Me too. And I’m thirsty!”
They run downstairs to the living room.

Food and drinks cover the table.
“Everything looks so delicious!” says Kanata.
“Kanata, are you thirsty?” asks Lucy, Daniel’s older sister.
“Yes, I am.”
“We have some milk, apple juice, and soda.”
“I want some apple juice.”
“Okay.” Lucy gives Kanata a glass of apple juice. “Here you are.”
“Thank you.”

“How about you, Daniel? Are you thirsty?”
“No, I’m not. But I’m very hungry! I want some pizza.”
“And I want some spaghetti,” says Kanata.
“All right. I hope you like it.”
Kanata and Daniel enjoy the party. They become good friends.
