Key Club International News

WE’VE REACHED THE US$1 MILLION MARK!

December 21, 2012

As of the end of November, members of CKI, Key Club, Builders Club, K-Kids and Aktion Club have donated more than US$1

million to The Eliminate Project. That translates to 555,555 lives saved or protected! But there’s much more work to be done: Keep

up the effort to educate people about MNT and to raise funds.

Reaching our goal of eliminating MNT from the face of the Earth will take the efforts of every Kiwanis-family member—every CKI,

Key Club, Builders Club, K-Kids and Aktion Club member—so that means you!

If you raised a minimum of US$5.40 a year—the equivalent of saving three lives (US$1.80 x 3 = US$5.40)—our Kiwanis-family

fundraising goals would be met during our campaign’s remaining three years.

The SLP per-member average per year for the next three years is a minimum of US$5.40, which is the equivalent of saving or

protecting more than three lives (US$1.80 x 3 = US$5.40). We need every member to raise at least $5.40. Women and their future

babies are counting on you!

GET SPONSORED FOR CONVENTION!

December 12, 2012

The 70th Annual Key Club International Convention doesn’t start until July 2013, but now’s the perfect time to begin raising

money to attend.

Have you heard of the one-third plan? Key Club International suggests you follow this formula to pay for your convention

experience in Washington, D.C.

o Pay one-third of the cost from your own fundraising efforts.

o Ask your Key Club or school to help fundraise another one-third of the cost.

o Talk to your sponsoring Kiwanis club or local businesses about sponsoring the final third.

Not sure where to start? No worries—Key Club International has created a sponsorship toolkit with checklists, sample letters,

PowerPoint templates and more to guide you step by step. Go to keyclub.org/convention, then click on the event sponsorship

toolkit and PowerPoint presentation on the right-hand side of the page.

Events

Join the Voice Against Brain Cancer

By Bill Gao

During the hectic month of December, the Key Club at Forest Hills High School planned a variety of events, ranging from park cleanups to festive holiday activities. One particular event was the Voices Against Brain Cancer Run/ Walk. The organization of the walk, Voices Against Brain Cancer, was established in the loving memory of Gary Lichtenstein. Unfortunately, after an audacious struggle against brain cancer, he passed away on October 23, 2001. In his memory, the Lichtenstein family had founded the organization. It’s motive was to touch the lives of those who were suffering from the disease, and hopefully, find a definite cure. Medical research is being done, as we speak, in establishments such as Cornell, Duke, Harvard, etc. As a not-for-profit public charity, Voices Agaisnt Brain Cancer receives most of its funds through donations, volunteers, and fundraising events. Taking place in Central Pack, the run/ walk is one of the organization’s annual fundraisers. The run/ walk took place on the cloudy Sunday of December 2, 2012. The club gathered together at Jackson Heights and arrived at Central Park, just before the event started. Led by our advisor, Ms. Korsky, the group walked through the park, voicing our support for passing runners. We cheered and clapped, as they each passed by. This had a positive effect on me because it made me realize how dedicated some people were for the cause. Despite the cold weather, and the uneasy feeling of rain, several people had gathered that day to show their support. On the train ride there, I noticed that the subway was already packed with people in running gear. It was evident that we were all headed towards the same event. Children as young as two had come to participate as well. The kid’s races allowed children from ages 2 to 12 to run against one another and support the cause. Not only was the run/walk inspiring, but it also allowed me to talk to with friends that I usually don’t get to see. The excessive stress of schoolwork and extracurricular activities had given me little time to socialize. However, the walk proved to be a fun and relaxing experience for my friends and me. While we were catching up with one another, we were also able to get a decent

amount of exercise as well. In the end, this was an incredibly productive and relaxing experience.

Rainy Park

By Kania Rimu Rainy park is located in 36 10th St (33rd Street), New York, NY 11106. It is between Vernon

Boulevard and 34th Avenue in Long Island City/Astoria. Rainy park has a beautiful setting along the East River, with big, shady trees and sloping lawns. Also, there is a children's playground that opened in 2008. There is a bridge across the East River between Manhattan and Long Island City. Originally, Rainy park was to be the Queen's anchor for the "Blackwell Island Bridge", a project backed by leading citizens of Long Island City after the American Civil War. However, in 1871 the citizens merged the "New York and Queens County Bridge Company". This bridge was planned to connect one ramp south to Brooklyn and Long Island. Rainy Park was created because the City of New York used several acres of waterfront property through condemnation procedures. Rainy passed away when the concrete "sea wall" was built in 1912.

On December 1, from 10AM to noon several Forest Hills Key Club members participated in the

Leaf Fest. When everyone arrived at the park it was full of leaves, broken branches, some adult park volunteers were already raking the leaves, and there were rakes and garbage bags everywhere. After few minutes of arriving, the Forest Hills Key Club worked together to clean up the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. The park was wide and large; everywhere you would look there were leaves. Everyone worked together, and made an effort to rake leaves and collect them to compost. Cleaning up all the leaves in the park took a long time. Although it looked like a lot of leaves at first, when everyone worked together, and had fun while working together and raking up all the leaves didn't seem like a difficult task. Within few hours the whole park that was originally full of leaves, hardly had leaves left on the ground. After working hard, one of the volunteers offered to give us snacks, which we happily ate.

This task taught me and many other Key Club members that day that no matter how big a task is,

when you work together, the big task won't seem as difficult as it would seem when doing it alone. Teamwork is the key! Key Club gives us a valuable experience that helps us learn about the importance of working together, and helping the community at the same time.

Bake Sale

By Latchmie Singh

The Kiwanis Educated Youth Club at Forest Hills High School is a student led organization that gives its

members opportunities to provide service to their community and develop their leadership skills. Key Club is the largest and oldest service organization for high school students. The club began in 1925 in the state of California and is currently an active club in more than five thousand high schools. Membership of this club has reached two hundred forty five thousand people including members from countries in North America, Central and South America, Asia, and Australia. The benefits of Key Club include leadership development, service learning, personal enrichment, college scholarships, and more. Being part of Key Club gives its members the chance to change the lives of the people in their community. Members of Key Club provide service to their neighborhood by attending various events. Some events of the Forest Hills High School Key Club are Walk to End Alzheimer's, Hurricane Recovery Park Clean Up, Undoing Racism, Christmas Smiles Operation, Chopping to End Hunger, and Food Pantry. One of the events I volunteered to take part in was the Bake Sale at Forest Hills High School on December 19, 2012. I, along with several other Key Club members, helped to sell bake goods such as cupcakes, cookies, and donuts to the people who attended the Winter Concert that evening. We also got the chance to watch the concert. At the end of the concert all of the baked goods were sold out due to their deliciousness. This event provided me with an opportunity to help raise money for a club that I am proud to be a part of. Since I joined Key Club I have met new people and made new friends. Being a part of Key Club has also helped develop my leadership skills and gave me knowledge about ways to help my community.

Operation Smiles Article By Kania Rimu

Operation Christmas Smiles is a fundraiser, and part of Reaching Out Community Services. Many people donated

unwrapped toys, and hand them in to the Saint Mary Mother of Jesus Church by December 19th. The donations of toys are used in a Christmas party. The Christmas party hosted by Reaching Out Community Services hopes to "put a smile on every child's face that is less fortunate due to low income statues". Every child that day is expected to meet Santa, and earn toys by playing games. Many games are in the event such as face painting, puppet show, magic show, refreshments, and so on. This event occurs every year to help create happiness even in a bad economy for a important day, Christmas.

On December 22, 2012 at 11:00, Forest Hills Key Club members participated in Operation Christmas Smiles, which is held in Saint Mary Mother of Jesus Church in Brooklyn. The Key Club members helped organize all the food. Some members wore elf costumes to be Santa's little helper when Santa comes to give out gifts to the children. The rest were assigned to different places. Some were assigned to give out food, and were told to give only one piece of each variety per person. The others were assigned to be in charge of the games, to take tickets to let the children play, and give the children tokens if the child wins in the game. Everyone worked really hard, and was able to see a parade with Dora the Explorer, SpongeBob Square pants, Elmo from Sesame Street, Bob the Builder, Santa, and more. It was a exciting day for everyone, and after working hard for the event the Forest Hills Key Club members were allowed to take few toys home. It was a long, exciting day to meet new people, and experience new things.

This event made a positive impact on me, and taught me a lesson. My job was to simply hand out one toy they liked, for every five tokens the children give me. It may sound easy, but many people were not in a line, and it was very unorganized. Although the toys were supposed to be for the children who worked hard to earn the toys, some parents wanted to just take it by making excuses. Some unsatisfied parents even decided to steal toys, which were supposed to be for the children to get themselves. This made me angry, but I had to put a smile on. After all, this party is supposed to make everyone happy, and whenever children got a toy they were happily smiling saying "Thank you". No matter how happy one person is, a thank you and a smile will give you energy, and give you happiness as well. No matter what happened, I was glad to know I made a difference to at least few children that day. I learned a valuable lesson that day, which was to be patient, and I got rewarded for that- knowing I made a difference, and receiving a thank you is the best Christmas gift for me.

Christmas Caroling By Kania Rimu

Forest Hills Hospital is a member of North Shore-LIJ Health System. Forest Hills Hospital is a general medical and surgical hospital in Forest Hills, NY. It's gastroenterology and urology department is nationally ranked U.S News Best Hospitals. The hospital has 312 beds, and is located in northern Queens, in a ethnically diverse residential neighborhood. It includes a variety of services to serve to a diverse community. The hospital features a cafeteria, and a gift/flower shop. The hospital includes cancer center, cardiology, gastroenterology, intensive care unit, internet medicine, neurology, and many more departments. Last year, the hospital had 16,507 admissions, and 45,625 emergency room visits. The emergency department treats over 25,000 patients a year.

On Christmas morning (December 25,2012) 20 Forest Hills Key club members volunteered to carol around Forest Hills Hospital for patients at 10:00 AM. A volunteer who dressed like Santa Claus welcomed the Key Club members, and gave the members a packet with pages full of Christmas carols. Also, everyone received different hats that looked like reindeers antlers, "Santa's little helpers" the elves, and more. The volunteers, and Santa Claus walked around the hospital, and went to all the floors singing many different Christmas carols. The volunteers and Santa thanked all the doctors, and people working in the hospital for working hard even on Christmas. Many people were taking videos and pictures of the carolers, and everyone had fun experience. The patients, the doctors, and volunteers were all smiling, and some laughing because of some random lyrics in a song.

This event gave a positive impact to not only me, but everyone who was there that day. Unfortunately, Christmas is supposed to be a day to celebrate, but some are sick in the hospital. No matter what, it is special and sweet when one can celebrate Christmas with another person. So when some people did not have visitors or were sick, the minute they heard us singing Christmas carols, the people's face brightened up smiling. I remember seeing a a father and a mother sad talking to a young girl, but when we started singing "Joy To the World" the little girl started smiling, and so did the parents. It filled me up for happiness that we can bring smiles on Christmas, and my friends who were with me thought the same. After seeing how much we made a difference, we made more of a effort to sing.

Holiday Ice Skating

By Karen Ko

Every Season, the Holiday Ice Skating event comes to play as a catalyst for relaxation. Ice Skating has been a renowned sport that has been recognized international as an Olympic sport. However, it is also been a pastime for friends and family. This December, the Forest Hills Key Club and other Key Clubs decided to join together with all its members to bring holiday spirit to them all. After all the member's hard work, they were rewarded with an event that would bring fun and joy to congratulate their efforts. The Ice Skating Event took place in the World Ice Arena near the Flushing area. Non-Key Club members were encouraged to come join. It was a great success. Key Clubbers filled the ice rink with high spirits. The Holiday Ice Skating Event on December 27, 2012 was the first time I had ever Ice-skated before. With my friends to support me, I ventured out into the Ice Rink. It took me a while to adapt to the extremely slippery floor. While I wasn't in the rink, it felt like I was trekking on a mountain. The ice skates were heavy and hard to walk in. Many people had fun on this event. Even with all the falling and colliding I experienced, I had a lot of fun too. It was the people in this event that made everything so worthwhile. Key Club is about spending time with people that will ultimately become lifelong friends. Through this event cannot be considered community service, it helped Key Clubbers become closer to one another. "Work hard, play harder" Doing community service is important, but it is equally important to spend quality time with friends. Through these friendships, Key Club came become more united as a family. As a family, we can do great things.

Holiday Ice Skating

By Dalamu Sherpa

My name is Dalamu Sherpa. I joined Key Club in my sophomore year and thought that it was the most awesome club ever. Though Key Club takes a lot of time compared to my other extra-curricular activities, it’s worth every second! The reason why it’s worth every second to me is because experiences in Key Club have given me the opportunity to serve my community by participating in worthwhile events and activities, while developing social skills at the same time. The experiences have also furthered my desire to be involved in more events. When I first became a member of Key Club, I didn’t really know about this event, service and volunteer stuff. Truth is I thought these things were going to be boring and thought only few people will be willing to do this service thing. But, later I realized that I was wrong because the way of Key Club serving the Community was just UNIQUE. It amazed me how Key Club brought such a large amount of people together through the one thing we now all love: service.

There was an Ice Skating Event on December 27 at Flushing Meadow, World Ice Skating Arena. I was really nervous because I never knew how to Ice Skate before. On top of that, so many people came to that event. The number of Key club member who came to that event was just WOW. It was funny how we filled the whole Ice Skating Arena. It was a great experience because I learned how to Ice Skate at my first try. In my opinion, out of all the events, Ice Skating event was the most meaningful experience that I've ever had in Key Club. Ice skating event has become one of my favorite events simply because I got to meet so many new people. I also came to know them better and become friends with them. The people I met were not only from our school, but were from different other schools. This interaction was like the best and fun moment for me since I like meeting new people. There are many more favorite things about Ice-Skating event. But the most significant moment was being able to see the smiles of people having fun. I cross my finger and hope there will be more exciting events like Ice Skating in the future. <3

Holiday Ice Skating

Brianna Perez

The Holiday Ice-Skating Event took place on Thursday, December 27th, 2012. This event was innovative in the sense that Key Clubbers were able to have fun and be together. It was a good way to take all the stress away after having all of those midterms and studying for all those long hours. Actually I finally tried to ice skate for the first time. It was very fun and a great way to spend time with my friends. The event took place in the World Ice Arena in Flushing Meadows. The experience I had at this event was a real good one. I actually had to opportunity to learn and do something for this first time. I haven’t done something for the first time in a long time. I’ve always wanted to learn to ice skate and I finally have. Everyone all had fun. Most of my friends when learning how to ice skate just like me. I mean we all fell a lot, but that’s the point. You fall and you get right back up and try again. A positive impact of the event was to be all-together. I think this was a great event to help strengthen the bond of the group. I actually had the opportunity to make new friends that are in our club. Once I got on the ice and actually started learning how to skate I didn’t want to get off the ice. Once I started I never wanted to stop. I don’t think I wanted to leave. I think whole purpose of this event was to strengthen our Key Club so that all together we can have a greater impact on our community. The more connected we are, the better of a chance we have to make more of a difference, which is exactly what Key Club is about, making differences and helping other people. Therefore, the Ice-Skating Event was a great experience and I wouldn’t mind doing it again. Maybe I could fully learn how to ice-skate and make more friends and create stronger bonds with people. When you really think about it just spending quality time with your friends and having great experiences is really what it’s all about, and having fun plays a key role in every event.
