You may have noticed that we have added a new image to the right side of the “Fiddler’s Rag” name on page 1. This image includes a guitar, fiddle, mandolin, and banjo.
SCVFA wants musicians to know that we are “not just for fiddlers”.
March 7th Board Meeting Notes By Anne Raphael, recording Secretary
Rag e-delivery – we still need to check email addresses and make sure that people are OK with getting it as an email. We expect to cut costs when we go to e-delivery of the Rag. We will need to make a minor revision to the Bylaws to allow e-delivery to more than one person in a household. We will offer an opt-out of the email delivery.
We are seeing a possible problem of people not entering the auditorium at the jam and not paying, but just going into groups outside to jam. We should ask anyone who doesn’t have a name-tag if they’ve been to the admission desk.
Slow jam going well with two leaders.
The slow jam will be from 1:30 to 2:30 at each jam. We added Barlow Knife and Shoo Fly to the Slow Jam tune list.
Square is letting us accept credit cards at the jam and money goes into our savings account within a couple of days. Membership increase of 6 household from 2 months earlier, but decrease of 3 from a year ago.
We need to find someone for the performance coordinator job soon! It requires someone to arrange players and communicate with the venues, and doing a good job of outreach takes time.
Charlie Walden offered to do a mini-concert at the May jam for no fee. He is a Missouri old time style fiddler.
The July, August and September jams will be at the San Jose Rose Garden. No admission will be charged however we will encourage donations at the park.
The SCVFA playout at the Prusch Farm Mountain Music Festival on Sunday October 7th has now been confirmed. The festival starts at 10am and our SCVFA group will play at 11am so that players can get to our monthly jam at 1:00 that day.

Good morning. Here I come -- kind of different. (I may have shared this another time.) Recently while I was going through old papers, I ran across this article (see left photo). Little Christine, now 35 years older, lives in Washington. Her older sister, Paula, who was in kindergarten, now lives in Chile where her mother, Maria, was originally from. I have been retired going on 34 years so the ad in the Coos Bay paper was before that. I was very pleased and complimented back then to see Joe's Electric Hospital ad in the paper. Christine's mother, Maria, would come to Hillcrest every day to pick up Christine's older sister who was in KG. I would often greet them as I went to the cafeteria. One day I took 3-year-old Christine on a tour of the cafeteria. She was fascinated as she saw the classes come down the stairs and into the cafeteria every day. Maria and I became very good friends and have kept in contact over the years. Thanks for coming down the stairs to the cafeteria with me today.

Lew’s Bio by Richard Brooks: Lew Holt is a fiddler living in Salem, Oregon, who I know personally. He sends out a weekly newsletter usually about his family history. However, his newsletter today is about the letter "V" that he had to explain as an elementary school principal.

This arrangement is a mix of how I play it and some ideas from The Waltz Book and various performances on YouTube.
Some accompanists like to play the first four measures of each part as shown in parentheses above: | D | DM7 | D6 | D | .(These walk down a modified D scale: the D chord is D-F#-A-D; DM7 adds a ‘C#’; D6 makes it a ‘B’, and the final Dchord can emphasize the ‘A’ note.) The ‘A’-note drone suggested above works fine with the basic D chord, but not sowell with this optional progression. Another melody-instrument option is to try to play those extra notes along with themelody. For example (fiddle fingering shown):
