DESIGN TRENDS 2016 ...07

For designers, homes are like a canvas that they use to express their endless creativity. Compiling new trends and timeless classics,

every year we get to see new and exciting ways to make our homes more beautiful than ever. Joelle Stewart has been the Senior Interior Designer

at Guidelines Advertising for nearly 20 years. During that time she has created many signature looks for Fieldgate Homes that have helped us earn our reputation for having some of the most stylish homes in the GTA. We sat down with Joelle to get her top list of design trends for this coming year.

A LIGHTER SHADE OF GREIGEGreige is the new grey. This is a light grey with an undertone of warm beige that

is the perfect neutral tone.

SIMPLY WHITEBenjamin Moore chose SIMPLY WHITE OC-117 as its colour of the year for 2016.

It is a clean, honest colour that can add real elegance to your home.

EXPECT TO HEAR MORE FROM BLUE ECHOBlue Echo AF-505 is another colour forecast to be big this year. This sophisticated

and smoky, warm blue is the perfect colour for any accent wall.

TOP COLOURS of 2016

EXPECT MORE GEOMETRIC TILES

Tiles are now available in an ever increasing range of geometric shapes, and many have been designed so that a larger pattern emerges when they’ve all

been installed. Expect to see an increasing number of hexagonal and triangular shaped tiles popping

up in stylish homes this year.

ARTISANAL IS IN

There is a growing movement to source hand crafted goods that have either been made locally or coming from around the globe. Natural textures and fabrics

such as crochet, basketry, Turkish towels, hand made ceramics and Moroccan rugs are all gaining in popularity. Budget conscious homeowners can mix in a few key artisanal pieces with some stylish mass produced items for a more affordable approach to

implementing this design trend.

A MIXTURE OF MATERIALS

Gold has been a really popular metal in recent years. This trend is likely to continue, but we’re also seeing a mix of warmer gold tones, such as antique brass, copper and rose gold in furniture

pieces, light fixtures and plumbing fixtures.

MORE PATTERNS & TEXTURES INSPIRED BY NATURE

We can expect to see more naturalistic flourishes in trendy design for the foreseeable future.

Florals, tropical prints and even animal skins are increasingly being used to bring a bold and

upmarket emphasis to interiors.

WINTER PROOF YOUR HOMEFor Big SavingsWinter is here again, and as the thermostat goes down outside, we turn it up inside to keep nice and cozy all winter long. Unfortunately the average homeowner overspends significantly on winter energy bills because they haven’t followed these simple tips to make their homes more efficient.

Try them today for huge savings.

Keep Warm This Winter & Save!

GET A HUMIDIFIERHumid air tends to feel warmer than dry air of the same temperature, this means that you can keep your thermostat a few degrees lower and save money on energy bills all winter long.

SEAL ALL LEAKSLook for cracks around windows, exterior vents and doorways. Sealing all leaks can save you over 10% a year on your heating bills.

SPRUCE UP YOUR HEATING SYSTEMBy re-sealing all duct work and tuning up your furnace, you can save as much as 13% on your heating bills. You can get even more savings by replacing your filters every 3 months and doing duct cleaning annually.

GET INTO INSULATIONMost attics in older homes are under-insulated. If you take the time to add an additional layer, you can save up to 30% on your year round energy bills. All it costs you is the relatively low price of some added insulation.

CREATIVE WINTER ACTIVITIES ...13

Indoors

Outdoors

Quiet winter weekends provide the perfect opportunity to spend some real quality time with your family. But you don’t need to stick to the standard movie nights, there’s lots of ways to get really creative and try something different with your family this weekend.

MAKE YOUR OWN FAMILY MOVIE

SNOWBALL TAG

INVENT A BOARD GAME

BACKYARD CAMPFIRES

With so many high quality digital cameras, it's easier

than ever to make your own movie this weekend.

You could write the script together as a family, or pick one

of your favourite existing movies and act out your

top scenes.

In this classic tag variation, the person

who is it must throw a snowball and hit another

player to tag them. Make sure not to throw

too hard! Grab a few wrapped candy bars and put them in

difficult to discover places around the house. Then either create a map or

write a list of clues to see who can find them first!

You can make some amazing snow art with a

little bit of food colouring and a lot of creativity. Use different food colourings to either draw right on

the ground, or build your own snow sculpture and use the food colouring to

decorate it.

All you need is some dice, paper, crayons and a little creativity to invent a board game of your own this weekend. Design the

board, write out a few simple rules and you're

on your way.

You don’t need to go far to enjoy a winter campfire. If you have a backyard fireplace this is a great

way to enjoy the outdoors on a chilly Sunday

afternoon. You can even roast marshmallows and enjoy some hot cocoa!
