Why would the author choose to use this comparison when describing Brian? What does this tell us about his

Read the following excerpt from Chapter 8 of Hatchet:

“He should keep it in his hand, and make a tool of some kind to help push an animal away. Make a staff,

he thought, or a lance, and save the hatchet. Something came then, a thought as he held the hatchet,

something about the dream and his father and Terry, but he couldn't pin it down.”

2. Why do you think Brian felt lonely after he got the fire started?

3. Read the following excerpt from Chapter 8 of Hatchet:

the ball of bark as fast as if it were gasoline. He had to feed the

flames, keep them going. Working as fast as he could he

carefully placed the dried grass and wood pieces he had tried at

first on top of the bark and was gratified to see them take.”

What is the meaning of the word gratified as it is used in the

sentences above?

a. lonely

Hatchet Chapter 11

1. How is Brian different than he was before? Examine the changes

that are shown in this chapter. Use quotes from the text to support

your analysis.

2. Figurative Language:

In Chapter 8, Gary Paulsen uses the following figurative language

“From his height he could see not just the lake but across

part of the forest, a green carpet, and it was full of life.

What type of figurative language is this? (Hint: it is a

comparison between two things)

___________________________________________

In the two outlines of faces below, write the qualities that describe the “old Brian” and the “new Brian”. This does not

have to be written in sentence form. You can use a list format. This should include physical qualities as well as mental

and emotional qualities. If you run out of room on the faces, write outside the outlines.

In AT LEAST two paragraphs, use the information above to describe how Brian has changed from the beginning of the

book to the end of Chapter 13. Do not just give me a list of qualities. I expect well-written paragraphs that include

complete sentences and text evidence.

Reminder: Scan or snap a photo of this

page and send to your teacher.
