SAINT MAXIMILIAN KOLBE CATHOLIC CHURCH Page 2 HOUSTON, TEXAS

We would like to take this time to say a big “thank you” to Father Michael Pham for his devotion to St. Maximilian Kolbe. He came to us in July 2018. His order, Congregation of the Mother of the Redeemer (CRM), is calling him back to the monastery in Carthage, Missouri wherein he will receive his next assignment. His last day with St. Maximilian will be June 15th. Also, a big “thank you” goes to Father Ignatius M. Dang Hoang, CRM for his time with St. Maximilian Kolbe. Father Ignatius came to us as a newly ordained priest in July 2016 and we appreciate his time and devotion with our parish as well. Father Ignatius will be re-turning to his order in Carthage, Missouri also. His last day with St. Maximilian will be at the end of May.

We want to wish and extend our very best to both Father Michael and Father Ignatius on their next assignments. We will continue to always keep them in our prayers, as they will continue to pray for the St. Maximilian community as well.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 10, 2020

VOCATION Roman Catholics in the United States spend a good deal of time speaking of “vocation” and the manner in which each of us discerns our voca-tion for life. In today’s apostolic letter, however, Peter gives us the “cornerstone” of our vocation, the description of what each of us is called to first and foremost by our baptism. He describes our vocation as “a chosen race, a royal priest-hood, a holy nation, a people of [God’s] own, so that you may announce the praises” of Christ, who called us out of darkness into light (1 Peter 2:9). All of us, no matter what path our life’s vo-cation may take us down, have been chosen by God, made holy, and anointed as priests in the high priesthood of Christ through baptism. All of this, so that we may announce the praises of Christ. Vocation is given for proclamation at home, in the workplace—wherever life takes us—in service, in word, and in sacrament. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — To meet their growing needs, the community chooses seven reputable men to serve the new Greek believers (Acts 6:1-7). Psalm — Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you (Psalm 33). Second Reading — We, like living stones, let ourselves be built into a spiritual house (1 Peter 2:4-9). Gospel — “Show us the Father,” Philip asks Jesus. To which Jesus replies: “Whoever sees me, sees the Father” (John 14:1-12). MASS [ONLINE]

An Act of Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

PRAYER IN A TIME OF PANDEMIC O God of compassion, your people are anxious in this time of pan-demic. Send your Holy Spirit among us to dispel our fears. We cry out to you in our confusion; comfort us in our affliction. Grant our leaders wisdom to guide us. Strengthen and sustain those who are ill, and be with those who care for them. Help us to travel this road in solidarity with our neighbors, with our eyes fixed on the salvation promised us through the death and resurrec-tion of your Son, who is Lord forever and ever. Amen. STAY WITH US, LORD Walk with us, Lord,

along the road of resurrection! Explain for us, so slow to believe,

the things that Scripture says of you. Break the bread of the Eucharist with us

whenever we share our lives with our brothers and sisters.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS That we encourage those who are struggling to find direction in their life and help them discern how they might use their gifts. “The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.” 1 Peter 2:7 Every person has been given gifts from the Holy Spirit. These are called “charisms” and they are used to build God’s kingdom of earth. While many people are able to recognize their natural talents and abilities, they may be unsure of their charisms. If you know some-one who is struggling for a direction in life, give them a little encouragement. Help them discern their char-isms and how God is calling them to use them. Re-member - no gift is too small or insignificant in God’s salvation plan.
