Fighting Animal Abuse Around the World Undercover investigations by PETA Asia have revealed that nearly 2 million cats and hundreds of thousands of dogs are killed for their fur in China each year, and many of them are skinned alive. PETA Asia is promoting cruelty-free fashion widely there. More than 200,000 people in China have now viewed PETA Asia’s Mandarin language anti-fur video, and there are more than 25,000 Chinese subscribers to PETA Asia’s Chinese Twitter (Weibo) account. CHINA PETA Germany funds the lifetime care of horses in Antalya, Turkey, who are rescued from backbreaking labor so that they can live out their remaining days in a peaceful sanctuary. TURKEY PETA Asia-Pacific released its first ad in the Middle East. The groundbreaking ad reads, “Earn Your Wings: Adopt a Stray,” and encourages people to adopt one of the thousands of stray dogs and cats who are born to suffer on the streets of Egypt and to avoid purchasing cats and dogs from breeders. EGYPT PETA Germany conducted an undercover investigation documenting the mass killing of thousands of homeless animals in the Ukraine before the start of the European soccer championship. PETA Germany has since funded spay-and-neuter programs in the area to reduce the animal overpopulation problem. UKRAINE PETA U.K. and AnimaNaturalis joined together for anti- bullfighting demonstrations, creating a media splash that continued to highlight the plight of bulls who are tormented to death in parts of Spain. SPAIN PETA Australia sent a campaigner to the livestock feedlots in Manama, the capital of Bahrain, where hundreds of thousands of Australian sheep are cruelly unloaded and forced onto crowded, barren feedlots. PETA Australia also distributed leaflets to consumers, and the resulting media coverage has reached hundreds of thousands of people. BAHRAIN PETA U.K. and our other international affiliates have helped turn the tide of public opinion in favor of ending Canada’s annual seal slaughter. CANADA PETA affiliates are leading an international revolt against the barbaric practice of “mulesing.” Giordano—a leading international apparel retailer with more than 2,400 shops worldwide—is the latest retailer to shun wool from mulesed sheep. AUSTRALIA After PETA Germany filed a legal complaint against Lohmann Tierzucht, the world’s largest chicken- breeding company was forced to pay a fine of 100,000 Euros for violations of the country’s animal protection regulations. GERMANY Animal Rahat, a project supported by PETA affiliates, alleviates the suffering of working animals in India by educating villagers about animals’ needs, providing veterinary care, and ensuring that lame bulls, ponies, and donkeys receive rehabilitation and rest. PETA India’s humane-education program has reached more than 1.4 million children in 7,146 schools across India. The program educates children about animals and teaches them how to make choices that can improve animals’ lives. INDIA Following months of campaigning by PETA U.K. and other groups, the government refused plans to build a dog-breeding facility that would have supplied thousands of dogs to the vivisection industry each year. PETA U.K. staff members were able to work with a number of U.K. retailers and major-event coordinators—including online grocer Ocado, Lord’s Cricket Ground, Wimbledon, the Royal Shakespeare Company, and the National Trust—to take foie gras off their menus. After years of campaigning, including getting PETA U.K. supporters to send almost 117,000 letters and e-mails to their MEPs, the EU voted to ban the import and sale of products made from seal fur.
