STORYLINES

KNOW THE OPPONENT: SYRACUSE ORANGE• Notre Dame will square off with conference foe Syracuse for the

ninth straight season which dates back to the BIG EAST days for both programs.

• The Irish hold a 15-0-1 record all-time against the Orange and are 8-0 in games at Notre Dame.

• Syracuse is one of four opponents (Pitt, St. John’s, Providence) that the Irish have played 10 or more times and have not lost to.

• Notre Dame has not allowed a goal to Syracuse in the eight previous home games and hold a 23-0 goal advantage in those games.

• Last season, the Irish took down Syracuse 3-0 at home on Oct. 4 for their eighth win of the season.

• Eva Hurm scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the fifth minute and Luis Delgado scored in the second half to build the lead for the Irish.

• Notre Dame did not allow a shot against Syracuse as Brooke Littman tallied her fourth shutout of the season in the win.

• Syracuse enters Sunday’s game with a 0-2-0, 0-2-0 ACC record and are coming off a 3-0 road loss to Louisville this past Thursday night.

FISHER, VAN ZANTEN LEAD IRISH OVER BC• Notre Dame kept up its winning ways in the home-opening 2-0

victory over Boston College Thursday evening.• The Irish used a dominant first half to build an early lead thanks to

goals from Sammi Fisher in the 14th minute and Kiki Van Zanten in the 35th minute.

• Van Zanten tallied her fourth goal in just three games while Fisher scored her third in as many games.

• The Irish held a 14-1 shot advantage in the first half and recorded the first 14 shots of the match.

• Mattie Interian made some key saves in the second half to preserve the shutout and she finished with three saves on the night.

• Notre Dame recorded its second consecutive shutout with the win over the Eagles.

IRISH CONTINUE HOME UNBEATEN STREAK

• With the win over the Eagles Thursday night, the Irish extended their home unbeaten streak to seven games (6-0-1) dating back to last season.

• During the streak, Notre Dame has allowed just two goals in 669 minutes of game action over those seven games.

• The Irish have picked up six shutouts during the streak and have outscored opponents 16-2 in those games.

• It is the longest home unbeaten streak since 2015-16 when the Irish went unbeaten in 12 consecutive games (12-0-0).

GOALS, GOALS, GOALS IN THE WIN OVER MIAMI• The Notre Dame offense came out in full force in its 6-0 win over the

Miami Hurricanes on Sept. 20.• The Irish scored six goals, the most they have had in a game since

2015 when they defeated Valparaiso by the same scoreline (6-0).• It was also the biggest conference win since the Irish have joined the

ACC in 2013.• It is the largest margin of victory in a conference game since 2012

when they were in the BIG EAST and defeated Cincinnati 7-0 on Sept. 16.

• The six goals marked the most scored in a road game since 2008 when the Irish defeated Cincinnati 6-0 on Sept. 28.

HATS ALL AROUND FOR VAN ZANTEN• Sophomore Kiki Van Zanten made a name for herself last season with

four goals and she picked up where she left off against Miami.• The Buffalo Grove, Ill. native came off the bench and scored three

goals for her first career hat trick in the 6-0 win.• Van Zanten scored all three goals in just 34 minutes of game action for

the second straight hat trick for the Irish against Miami after Sammi Fisher tallied one last season against the Hurricanes.

• It is the 70th hat trick of all-time for the Irish and she is the youngest player to record a hat trick since Cari Roccaro in her sophomore year in 2013 against No. 21 Maryland.

IRISH RETURN TO FRIENDLY CONFINES OF ALUMNI STADIUM• The Irish return home to Alumni Stadium to kickoff a four game

homestand against Boston College after having a lot of succcess at home in 2019.

• The Irish finished last season with an 8-1-1 record at home, including a first round win in the NCAA Tournament over Saint Louis.

• Eight of the 10 shutouts for the Irish came at home last season, including the first three home games of the season.

• The Irish clinched a berth in the ACC Championship with a 3-2 2OT win at home in the regular season finale against Wake Forest.

• In the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Kiki Van Zanten’s goal in the first half secured the 1-0 win to advance in the tournament for the 23rd time in program history.

COLLEGIATE FIRSTS IN OPENING WEEKEND

• Five new faces made their collegiate debuts in the season opener against Florida State.

• Eva Gaetino and Eva Wirtz earned spots in the starting lineup while Lucy Mitchell, Ellie Ospeck and Caroline Gray came off the bench for their first collegiate appearances.

• It is the third straight season at least one freshman has made it in the

• On Sept. 20 against Miami, freshman goalkeeper Ashley Naylor came on in net after the weather delay to finish the final 10 minutes of the match for her first collegiate appearance.

OFFENSIVE FIREPOWER RETURNS• The Irish return a large portion of their offensive numbers from the

2019 season this year.• Notre Dame returns 28 of its 31 goals (90.3%), 23 of its 25 assists

(92%) and 81 of its 87 points (93%) from last season.• Senior midfielder Sammi Fisher led the Irish in all three categories

last season after tallying six goals, five assists and 17 points on the year.

• Following the regular season, Fisher was named to the All-ACC third team.

• Fisher notched a hat trick in the 3-0 win over Miami last season. She scored all three goals in the second half and was the first Irish hat trick since 2013.

• Senior forward Eva Hurm returns after recording five goals, three assists and 13 points during the 2019 campaign. Three of her five goals were game-winners.

• Hurm also joined Fisher on the All-ACC third team.• After missing her first season in 2018 to injury, forward Luisa Delgado

broke out on the scene in 2019. She scored four goals and four assists for 12 points on the year.

• She notched her first career goal and first career brace in the 4-0 home win over Northwestern

• Forward Kiki Van Zanten scored four goals on the year, including the game winner in the 87th minute in the 1-0 road win over Michigan and the game-winner in the first round victory over Saint Louis.

GOSAR AND WINEBRENNER LEAD THE BACK LINE• The Irish return two mainstays on the back line from last season to

begin the 2020 campaign. • Senior Jenna Winebrenner and junior Jade Gosar bring a wealth of

experience to the defense after both starting 19+ games last season.• Winebrenner, mainly a right back, started all 21 games in 2019 and is

third on the team in minutes returning (1,500) this season.• Winebrenner notched her first career goal in 2019 and finished with

two goals, one assist and five points. • She played 90+ eight times and was on the field for all 10 of Notre

Dame’s shutouts last season.• Gosar, primarily a center back, started in 19 of 20 games in 2019 and

is second on the team in returning minutes (1,562).• Gosar tallied her first collegiate point on the assist to Olivia Wingate’s

late equalizer in the 1-1 2OT draw against No. 9 Duke.• Gosar also played 90+ minutes eight times in 2019, including being

on the field in all 10 of Notre Dame’s shutouts.

YOUTH INFUSION FOR 2020 • In Nate Norman’s third season at the helm of the Fighting Irish,

another strong class of freshmen will be joining the ranks in 2020. • The Irish welcome nine freshmen to the team that has routinely had

strong production from their incoming class in their first year on campus.

• The signing class, which consists of athletes from six states (Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Oregon, Minnesota, California), includes three goalkeepers, two defenders, one midfielder and three forwards.

• Eva Gaetino was a two-time Adidas National Elite Soccer Program in Lyon, France and Portland, OR (2018-19).

• Caroline Gray was a two-time Georgia State Champion (2017 & 2019) and she played club with fellow freshman Lucy Mitchell.

• Lucy Mitchell was a two-time Georgia state champion (2016, 2018) and was the MVP of both games. Mitchell was one of four signees to play in the 2019 Allstate All-American Game.

• Ashley Naylor was a three-time team captain and guided her high school team to the state finals for the first time in school history. She was named team MVP during her sophomore season.

• Ellie Ospeck joined Lucy Mitchell in the 2019 Allstate All-American Game. She was named to the 2019 USA Today ALL-USA second team and is the sister of current senior Erin Ospeck.

• Paige Peltier joined Ellie and Lucy in the 2019 Allstate All-American Game. She was named Class AA Ms. Soccer Minnesota in 2019 and was the Pioneer Press Soccer Player of the Year. Paige was also an Esmark All-American in 2016 and 2018. Her dad played baseball at Notre Dame and currently holds the school record for career batting average.

• Kaylin Slattery was the North Carolina US Youth Soccer State Cup champions in 2015 and her dad graduated from Notre Dame in 1990.

• Eva Wirtz was the 2018 Georgia state champion and state runner-up in 2017. She was named defensive MVP in both her sophomore and junior seasons.

• Mary Votava joined Lucy, Ellie and Paige in the 2019 Allstate All-American Game. She is a three-time Oregon state champion and was named to the 2019-20 USA Today All-USA Preseason Girls Soccer Team.
