Figurative Language

Personification

• An animal given human-like qualities or an object given life-like qualities.

• Example ;• Sun smiling down , or the boat

hugged the shore.

Alliteration

• Consonant sounds repeated at the beginnings of words.

• Example ;• Sally seems to sit somewhere

separate from Sonia.

Assonance

• Repeated VOWELS sounds in a line or lines of poem.

• Example ;• I baked a cake and ate it.

hyperbole• Exaggeration often used for

emphasis.• Example ;• Man that’s like a million times

harder!

Onomatopoeia

• Words that imitate the sound they are naming.

• Example ;• But with a buzz or a ding or a hiss or

a roar.

Metaphor

• A direct comparison of two unlike things.

• Example ;• My mind is an ocean , my words are

a river.

Simile

• A comparison of two things using like or as.

• Example ;• Smooth as jazz

Imagery

• Most images are visual but they can also appeal to the senses of sound touch taste or smell.

• Example ; Sweet Sorrow

Consonance

• Consonant sounds close together • Example ;• I dropped the locket in the thick

mud .

idiom

• Literal meaning of its individual words.

• Example ;• Have the upper hand or under the

weather
