Bill Barisoff, Dave Hayer, Murray Coell, Kash Heed, Kevin Krueger, Harry Bloy and B.C.'s Minister of Education George Abbott followed suit this week. The Premier was once a rising star in her Liberal party both federally and provincially. When she became Premier, she made history as the second woman Premier of her province and now, just in over a year, the longest serving woman Premier of her province. Her stature is now beginning to be lost just mere months away from an expected BC provincial election. The fact is that, her leadership style and lack of clarity has made her irrelevant and incompetent at best. As a result, it has helped the once damaged provincial NDP from the left and the Conservative Party from the right a real claim at a future government. She has tried to shed her lifelong centrist image and has embraced a slew of conservative causes while hiring a number of Harper staffers as well as pollsters as her trusted advisers. This happened while totally ignoring her political base within her own Liberal base who cheered and supported her when she won the leadership over Kevin Falcon in a bloody contest last February. For them, she represented the progressive and safe political middle that was the reason she became leader and by default Premier. The British Columbia Office of the Comptroller recently revealed how the Premier charged $475,000 in expense credit cards in just a year. This was double what her predecessor spent previous to taking over the position. These charges included spending of thousands in a number of over the top restaurants in Vancouver including $3,267.66 at Ferris Oyster Bar in Victoria and $2,279 at Bishops in Vancouver.Former Premier, Gordon Campbell, reported office's expenses that totaled $205,000 and $195,000 the year before that.In politics, authenticity matters most. Her one time supporter Warren Kinsella recently wrote how "Authenticity is the most prized commodity in politics, even in Winlaw, where cellphones don't work and no one seems to care so much. Clark - who was always a card-carrying federal Liberal, and even worked for a cabinet minister in Jean Chretien's government -- has tried for months to persuade everyone she isn't at all what she used to be."Often times, electors are generous enough to over look minor shortcomings with their money. They are wise to look at the bigger picture over small mistakes. However, what they do not forgive is lack of authenticity.Ernie Eves in Ontario learned it the hard way. Premier Clark does not poss authenticity and that is why she will not be Premier for long.

500 Degree Holders UnemployedFiji’s Minister of Labour, Industries and Employment Jone Usamate says unemployment remains a serious concern locally.“There are at least 500 with degrees are registered in the National Employment Centre (NEC) system at the moment who are looking for jobs,” he said. “Unemployment is a major, major issue in Fiji.”The need to stick to 55 as retirement age in order to curb the growing

unemployment rate in the country.With that, government has also taken a hand on approach to train youths for blue collar jobs as well as tap into its Pacific bilateral ties for volunteering works.Usamate said while some people try to separate Fiji from other Pacific Islands, they cannot stop the Pacific family spirit.“No one can prevent that, the family of one ocean, the spirit of sharing and meeting its own people.”

FLP To Work With Mineworkers Union

Fiji’s Labour Party (FLP) has pledged its support to assist the Fiji Mine Workers Union (FMWU) put into effect their claims in relation to a 21-year-old strike.The party’s comment follows a FMWU meeting earlier this week where they decided they will only campaign and back a political party committed to help them in their cause fighting against harsh working conditions at the Emperor Goldmine in Vatukoula.The strike, one that has also been noted in the Guinness World Record as one of the longest in the world began on 27 February 1991 involving 436 workers who also voiced their displeasure against the government of the day then for failing to recognize the workers’ body as a union.FLP spokesman Rajendra Chaudhry said they are aware of the mine workers' plight and concerns.“We will definitely assist them, not in the intention to get their votes but to assist them as they have suffered long enough,” said Chaudhry.“Not only that there are also some members of the union who are active members of the party. We would have helped them in 1999 when FLP came into office but was not successful

because of the 2000 incident.”FMWU president Joseva Sadreu said, “The 436 miners represented more than 436 families which now include two other generations of voting age.“The union members come from all over Fiji and would represent a significant proportion of the voting public,” said Sadreu.He said FMWU was established in light of the decision of the Fiji Court of Appeal in 2006 that the solution to the strike was in the hands of the government of the day.“We will campaign vigorously and vote for any political party that undertakes to abide by the Court of Appeal decision that the recommendations of the 1995 G.P Lala Commission of Inquiry into work and conditions at Vatukoula, and our claims for human rights, can be accepted, respected, and acted upon by the government.”FMWU had made their submissions to the Constitution Commission last week.The Fiji Labour Party, Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua, United People’s Party, newly formed National Youth Party are among parties who have confirmed they will stand in the 2014 election.

Report Teenage PregnanciesThe heads of the Cakaudrove and Macuata provinces have been advised to report cases of teenage pregnancies to the police.Even though the two provincial offices have not received any case so far this year, provincial officials believe the problem persists.Roko tui Cakaudrove Ro Aca Mataitini said such cases were rife in the province last year where seven primary school students aged between 11 and 14 years were reported pregnant."We haven't received any case so far this year but we know there are victims out there who need our help," Ro Aca said."At the moment, we are just increasing our awareness programs, advising mothers to play their role and teenage

girls to look after themselves well."Ro Aca said it was everyone's responsibility to report cases of teenage pregnancy in a bid to control the social ill."We sent young mothers to Suva last year where they have been cared for and looked after well," he said.Roko tui Macuata Sitiveni Lalibuli said the issue should be a subject of discussion in homes."Parents also play an active role in disciplining their children because their teachings will shape their future," Mr Lalibuli said."Teenage pregnancy should be talked about at home and mothers should constantly remind their children about the consequences they will encounter when they become single mothers."

New Parties Will Emerge - PMPrime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama said new political parties that have not relied on race as their main driving force to get votes will definitely emerge before the 2014 elections. Commodore Bainimarama said Fiji needs parties that address real issues affecting people on a daily basis.

When recently questioned by the media on whether he is aware of any new party, Commodore Bainimarama said people have to wait and see. Commodore Bainimarama said parties like SDL, Labour and United People’s Party have nothing new to offer as they are used to the politics of the past from where they come from.

Fiji, UAE Pact To Eliminate Double Tax

Fiji and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have signed a final agreement to eliminate double taxation on income.This move is aimed at bolstering economic ties and enhancing trade development between the two countries.The agreement follows the opening of Fiji’s latest embassy in the UAE last Sunday by Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama.The agreement was signed by the Permanent Secretary for Finance, Filimone Waqabaca on behalf of Fiji and Younis Haji Al Khouri, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Finance on behalf of the UAE.TradeArabia News Service reports the agreement falls in line with the UAE’s efforts to support the process of opening up to the global economy.This is through the promotion of the free movement of production factors, increasing investment opportunities and encouraging import and export operations, as well as avoiding the obstruction of free flow of trade and investments.It also aims to enhance the economic climate between the UAE and Fiji in addition to promoting the development goals of the UAE at the local level.Mr Al Khouri said: “The signing

of the agreement to avoid double taxation between the UAE and Fiji is an important step we have made to strengthen bilateral relations between both countries in the economic and financial sectors.“This agreement falls within the framework of our efforts to consolidate and strengthen the economic and investment cooperation between the UAE and countries globally.“These agreements have a positive effect on protecting and guaranteeing the investment, trade and economic cooperation between the countries.”Double taxation agreements help to diversify the sources of national income and increasing the volume of inward investment.They focus on tax-related matters, prominent changes witnessed by the economic and financial sector, as well as new financial instruments and mechanisms of transfer pricing, the removal of most forms of tax discrimination and the reduction of some of the taxes that were imposed on foreign investors.They also provide a stable tax environment for foreign investors, leading to increased international competitiveness of the economy.

Abroad Training For Resort StaffEight members from the Panorama Team of the Fiji Beach Resort and Spa managed by Hilton went on an education trip and attachment at the Hilton Surfers Paradise and Hilton Brisbane and Queensland, Australia last month.Fiji Beach Resort and Spa training manager, Eremasi Rova, said having reached the finale of their two years management trainee programme, the team was given an opportunity to go on an educational trip abroad.Mr Rova said the group consisted of members ranging from line to supervisory staff in areas of food and beverage, rooms division, recreation and activities, spa, and business development and sales.“With the key objectives of a cross-exposure in related departments within the sister hotel properties as well as experiencing lifestyle in one of our core markets, the Panorama team members spent at least four hours of attachment daily,” Mr Rova said.

“They mainly observed and made friends with Hilton counterparts in Australia to identify some best practices that they could bring back with them to the Fiji property’s operations.He said the teams also got a chance to visit tourist sites, eateries, hotels, shopping malls, and experience some lifestyle factors of Australia during their trip.“One of the key areas observed was the cultural difference and its effect on how service was delivered,” he said.“Guest expectations of service efficiency in Australia were very high because of the market it caters for, compared to our resort’s more relaxed environment and its leisure market.”Mr Rova said another notable observation was how all Hilton hotel properties maintained consistency in the application of Hilton brand standards.He said the team was able to bring back some “best practices” to offer some alternative strategies in how we serve guests from one of our key markets.

31 FNU Students Given Chance To Finish Studies

31 students of the Fiji National University who were unable to pay their fees have been given a chance to finish their studies. The Fiji National University Council has decided to establish a Student Financial Aid Scheme to enable recruitment of quality performing students, to promote and reward academic excellence for those who come from very poor family background. The new scheme was launched today at FNU Nasinu by the Minister for

Education Filipe Bole. Financial Scheme Coordinator Joseph Camillo said the program is supported by thirty stakeholders including the government to recruit students who were unable to pay their tuition fees, fall under the poverty line and are unable to pursue government scholarships. Kolinio Kamunalagi who is part of the scheme said he will now have a chance to continue his studies. A total of 31 students are part of the scheme and the school is still accepting applications.

BSP ProfitsThe Bank South Pacific Limited has achieved a consolidated operating profit of $255.20m for its half year ending June 30, 2012.The operating profit is an increase of 22.7 per cent on the consolidated operating profit of $207.99m for the same period last year.BSP chairman, board of directors Kostas Constantinou said the steady first half 2012 results followed solid 2011 full year results."The conditions contributing to 2011 second half performance continued during the first half of this year," Mr Constantinou said.He said the bank had again performed creditably, posting an increase in operating profit before tax over the corresponding period of 2011."After tax profit is $190.35m compared to $147.90m for the same period last

year primarily due to the growth of non-interest income resulting from the delivery of several strategic initiatives."He said the consolidated 12 per cent revenue was achieved while maintaining a controlled lending strategy that had seen interest income grow at a more than acceptable level.Mr Constantinou said despite all the challenges there had also been growth in the level of BSP group total assets from 10.24 billion at the end of 2011 to $12.37 billion at June 2012.The banks customer net loan has also exceeded to $4.23b and market shares remain stable."Expenses to income ratio for the first half of 2012 stands at 48 per cent, compared to 58 per cent 12 months earlier," he said.Mr Constantinou said they noted that the current trend in the economy

would continue to present further earnings challenges for the bank for the remainder of this year."BSP is already experiencing pressure from its investment portfolio, which will impact second half earnings. Much energy is being directed to measures to preserve revenue stability and attention to operating costs remains very critical."He also announced that in keeping up with the underlying improvement in operating results, the board of BSP has declared an interim dividend of $0.19 per share which on a post consolidation basis represents 27 per cent increase on the interim dividend of last year.The interim dividend will be paid on October 26. He said he was confident that the bank would continue to adapt to challenging market conditions and continue to deliver a sound underlying performance.

Scholarship To ChinaThe first-ever recipient of the Confucius Institute scholarship has left for China on a three-year study program at the Beijing Language and Culture University.University of the South Pacific student Meihua Luo was born in China and raised in Fiji since the age of five, left for China last week to study for a master's degree.She said she was awarded the scholarship

for being an outstanding student of the USP's recently-established Confucius Institute. Ms Luo said she applied for the scholarship to study the Chinese language and culture."I will be expected to study Chinese and culture and after completing my studies, I will teach the language to others," Ms Luo said.She said her postgraduate diploma in psychology from USP would help in

her teaching career."Having completed my postgraduate diploma, I believe my qualification will relate well to teaching," Ms Luo said."Being out of my comfort zone for the first time will be a challenge for me, but at the same time I will get to experience being independent."Ms Luo is expected to spend her first year learning Mandarin and Chinese culture.

Fijian Grannies To Graduate This MonthTen Fijian grandmothers who are undergoing 6-month solar electrification training at the Barefoot College in India will graduate this month.This was revealed by Minister for Women Dr Jiko Luveni who will be attending their graduation ceremony.“Once they come back, the 10 grandmothers will be expected to solar electrify their villages,” Luveni said.“Workshops will be constructed and they will take on their roles as the solar engineers of Fiji to solar electrify their

own villages.While in India, Luveni will also witness the signing of an MOU with the Barefoot College to secure assistance for two new projects planned for women in Fiji.“One is about the manufacturing of sanitary pads using raw materials in rural areas at reasonable costs. If

adopted in Fiji it will reduce our imports of sanitary pads. The second initiative is the production of educational toys for children in preschools, using recycled products such as plastic bags.”Luveni said the two projects are in line with the government’s commitment to create economic opportunities for women in Fiji.

The first Hindi movie shot in Fiji this year is in its post-production stage in India.Supermodel, which was shot in parts of Sigatoka, Nadi and Lautoka, generated much interest in the local community.It is about the search for a supermodel and the movie's shoot saw the likes of Ashmit Patel, upcoming actress Veena Malik and model-turned-actress Aparna Jadhav gracing our shores.Movie producer, Ravi Ahlawat, said the shooting had been completed."After shooting in Fiji, the post-production is now in full swing," he said."I am planning my next film in Fiji after the release of Supermodel."

Mr Ahlawat said the film was expected to be in cinema screens in either December or January.On the cast for his next film planned to be shot in Fiji, he said: "I am talking with the stars now and as something is finalized, we will tell you."Mr Ahlawat told this newspaper earlier the support he received from locals while shooting Supermodel in Fiji was overwhelming.He said about 90 per cent of the movie was shot in Fiji.The movie will feature a local businessman and his wife playing the roles of the lead actress Veena Malik's parents.Part of the movie was also shot in the couple's home at Denarau in Nadi.

Miss India Fiji Pageant Gets Underway

The 2012 Miss India Fiji pageant got underway in Suva with the ten finalists going through catwalk and public speaking training at TappooCity.The final of the Miss India Fiji, an affiliate of the world’s only cultural pageant will take place this Saturday and the winner will represent Fiji during the Miss India Worldwide Pageant, which is celebrating its 22nd year in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia early March next year.In the lead up to the finals, the girls are undergoing a number of training and grooming sessions including public outings.Fiji Fashion Week director Ellen Whippy took the girls through the ramp walk and public speaking training.Pageant Director, Aliyah Jan says the

pageant is not only to promote the Fijian culture and celebrate the Indian Diasporas around the world but it is also to help develop the participants through training. “The guest lecture by Fiji Fashion Week is to help the girls in their preparation in terms of public speaking, posture, catwalk and etiquette," she said.The pageant consists of four segments, the introduction, Indian tradition, talent and a question & answer session.The Miss India Fiji Pageant is intended to provide entertainment and enlightenment about Fijian and Indian arts and culture to the audience.Over 30 countries are expected to be part of the Miss India Worldwide finals in Malaysia.

Drug ChargeA Kenyan national appeared in the Nadi Magistrates Court on Monday for allegedly trying to import illicit drugs into the country.Pamela Akinyi Angira was apprehended when the Transnational Crime Unit with the help of Customs and Immigration officers searched her at Nadi International Airport.Ms Angira was allegedly found

in possession of 2.4 kilograms of amphetamine drugs and subsequently charged with one count of importing illicit drugs and one of being in possession of illicit drugs.A plea has yet to be taken from Ms Angira.Nadi magistrate Thushara Rajasinghe has adjourned the matter to September 14.

Fijian Man Re-Applies For Refugee Status In NZ

A man refused refugee status in New Zealand has re-applied, saying Fiji's military authorities have worked out who he is and he fears arrest on his return. The Banaban man, identified only as BG, said after an Immigration and Protection Tribunal decision about him was published in February the military regime worked out who he was. The 45-year-old claimed the 5000 Banabans now in Fiji occupied the lowest rung of the socio-economic ladder and lived in fear. In February, the tribunal, in a decision published on its website with his name removed, refused refugee status to BG. "The publication of the article caused (BG) and his wife and children to fear returning to Fiji," a Department of Labour report, written by a refugee and protection officer, said. The officer was considering the man's second bid for refugee status. The report said BG's sister met with a regime official involved with the Rabi Island community. He told her BG's name "appeared on the army blacklist''. "This meant that (BG) would be taken to the army barracks as soon as he returned to Fiji," the report said.

"(The official) advised (the sister) to tell (BG) not to return to Fiji.'' The official said the case was often discussed in the office of military strongman Voreqe Bainimarama. Discussion of it would "endanger the lives of the Banaban elders and community", the report said. However the report questioned the credibility of BG's sister's statement regarding an army blacklist. The refugee and protection officer said he believed some of the claims were "embellishments and are not credible". The report said BG had, since refusal earlier this year of refugee status, developed liver kidney disease that would ultimately require dialysis. The refugee and protection officer's report said it was accepted there had been "significant changes of circumstances" for BG and the refugee application was being re-considered. "It could appear speculative that the Fijian regime is aware of the tribunal's decision, let alone the identity of 'BG'. Even if they are, it could appear speculative that (BG) would experience any problems as a result," the report said. Refugee status is still under investigation.

Fiji To Build 1st Women Resource Centre

Fiji is working to set up the Pacific island nation's first resource centre for women in Savusavu with support of the Australian government.

"This will be the first centre of its kind for rural women in Fiji and I must acknowledge the vision and commitment of the Soqosoqo Vakamarama Cakaudrove, who in collaboration with the Architects without Frontiers from Australia has been working on this project since 2008," acting Australian High Commissioner Glenn Miles said on Wednesday. According to Miles, with funding support from Australian AID of 1.3 million Fiji dollars (US$742,000), the Cakaudrove Women's Resource Centre will provide local rural women with safe accommodation when travelling to Savusavu town to sell their produce and handicrafts. The centre will also become a key meeting point for women from Cakaudrove to receive training and assistance to improve their livelihood and enhance their culture in Fiji's northern island. The contribution of women to rural development is already well documented. According to the 2010 UN Women economic analysis report

of municipal markets in Fiji, 87 percent of all market vendors were women and rural women in particular reinvest up to 75 percent of their income earned in municipal markets back into their villages on family wellbeing and community commitments. The centre will also be used as a training facility to empower and train young rural women towards self-employment, which will ensure that women living in remote parts of the northern island of Vanua Levu to have easier access to services over economic opportunities, health, nutrition and education. "Improving women's economic empowerment is achievable. This centre, once completed, will become the vehicle to do this," Miles said, adding Australia "is committed to improving the lives of disadvantaged women, men, their families and communities in Fiji". As Fiji's largest bilateral donor, Australia is increasing its support to Fiji to an estimated 100 million Fiji dollars (US$57 million) in official development assistance by 2014.

Passengers Urged To Reconfirm Tickets

Consort Shipping Limited, operators of the inter island vessel Spirit of the Fiji Islands (SOFI), has called on its open ticket holders to ensure their tickets are reconfirmed before attempting to travel.This comes after passengers with unconfirmed tickets were not allowed to travel on the SOFI as the vessel had reached the maximum number of passengers it was allowed.The incident occurred as the vessel was about to leave Narain Jetty last Friday night for Savusavu and Taveuni.Consort Shipping finance and corporate affairs manager Adrial Prasad said open ticket holders were allowed to use them at any time over three months."The open tickets are valid for three months, however, passengers must contact our officers 24 hours prior to

sailing in order to reconfirm the tickets for that voyage," Mr Prasad said.He said the passengers with unconfirmed tickets were asked to wait while those with confirmed tickets boarded."After the passengers boarded, we accommodated those with unconfirmed tickets on a first-come-first-serve basis. Unfortunately, we couldn't accommodate a handful of passengers."Mr Prasad said the details and conditions of an open ticket were clearly shown on the tickets and said the whole process of loading passengers had been overseen by Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji officers."All the passengers who were not allowed to travel on Friday have been rebooked for our trip," he added.

Pacific Sun Draws Up Policy To Take In More Local Pilots

Fiji’s domestic airline, Pacific Sun is drawing up a policy to take in more local pilots and set up a clear career path and progression plan for incoming pilots. Pacific Sun General Manager, Shaenaz Voss said they have a technical crew of 55 at the moment who fly their three Twin Otters and two ATR’s. However the next approach will result

in the most experienced at the top level given an opportunity to go to Air Pacific to fly jets and the intake starting with the new pilots starting for the Twin Otters. Voss said at least six new pilots will be go into full training in the next few weeks. Voss said they will take more local pilots by the end of this year.

Journalists Urged To Take Advantage Of Lifting Of Censorship

Permanent Secretary for Information, Sharon Smith-Johns has urged journalists to take advantage of the lifting of censorship. Speaking at the conference on Media and Democracy at the University of the South Pacific, Smith-Johns said the Government is looking at journalists to again rise to the challenge of giving ordinary people information they need. She added that one will hear a lot about censorship and journalists in Fiji are too afraid to report fully and without fear and favour. Smith-Johns urged journalists not to use this as an excuse in not doing their jobs. She said the Government wants a

vigorous media but with certain conditions that are a prerequisite in most countries. According to Smith- Johns these conditions are not to fuel racial division, not to threaten peace and order, not to damage the economy and people’s jobs. Meanwhile, according to lawyer, Richard Naidu during censorship when the public don’t trust the media to come out with the information then they resort to other sources of information such as blog sites. He further added that during censorship those in authority would not know what people are thinking about them.

Jail Term For Attempted Aggravated Robbery

A man who attempted to enter the office of a sports association will serve three quarters of his sentence.Saiceni Tekuru, 49, pleaded guilty to a count of attempted aggravated robbery.The court heard that at 9.35am on May 5 this year, Tekuru and another person attempted to enter the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee office in Suva.A witness tipped off the police who arrested Tekuru at the scene.

The accused admitted the offence in the caution interview, the court heard.In mitigation, Tekuru told the court that he was in a defacto relationship and had two childrenSuva Magistrate Yohan Liyanage sentenced Tekuru to 24 months imprisonment.He further ordered that the accused serve the first 18 months at the Suva Corrections Centre while the remaining six months to be suspended for three years.

Chinese Language Education Available At USP

People in Fiji and around the region now have the opportunity to learn the official Chinese language by taking Mandarin courses offered by the Confucius Institute at the University of the South Pacific (USP).During the opening ceremony, Prime Minister’s Office permanent secretary Pio Tikoduadua said the institution will also enhance culture exchange between the people of Fiji and the Republic of China.Tikoduadua said the government will be supporting the initiative and also strengthening bilateral ties between Fiji and the People’s Republic of China.The Confucius Institute was established at USP following an agreement between the University and the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) with the

Iran And Fiji Establish Diplomatic Relations

Fiji and the Islamic Republic of Iran formally established diplomatic relations after Fijian Minister for Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation Ratu Inoke Kubuabola signed a Memorandum of Understanding with his Iranian counterpart DrAli Akbar Salehi in the Iranian capital Tehran.This historic achievement is a culmination of close cooperation and dialogue between officials of the two governments and the signing demonstrates the unwavering commitment between Fiji and Iran.At their meeting, Dr Salehi welcomed Minister Kubuabola stating that Iran had long considered Fiji as a strategic ally amongst the Pacific Small Island Developing States and that the two countries had a lot to offer in terms of further exploring and enhancing economic and development cooperation,Minister Kubuabola said that Fiji looks forward to strengthening this important

Coral Coast Shows Increase In Tourists

Hotels along the Coral Coast are recording high occupancy rate as they enter their peak season.Coral Coast Hotels Association chairman, Peter Hopgood, said most of their members were recording maximum occupancy rate.“This is a positive outcome for the hard work staff and management of their member hotels put in, while trying to recover after being indirectly affected by the two flood experienced in the Western Division early this year,” he said.“Our occupancy rate has increased to ten percent compared to the same period last year, which is a good indicator that all is going great for hotels and resorts along the Coral Coast, everyone is busy and happy.”Mr Hopgood, who is also the general manager of the Outrigger on the Lagoon Fiji Resort, said the resort had only one room vacant on Wednesday night.

“This is to be expected around this time of the year. Not only has the occupancy rate increased tremendously, we have also seen an exciting increase in the number of wedding bookings,” he said.“We have now reduced our number of weddings to one per day so that we can give as much attention to the couple who are getting married.“We have also recorded advance wedding bookings for early next year.That is a good sign not only for hoteliers in the Coral Coast but also in Fiji as our members are assisting other organisations and hotels in promoting Fiji as a wedding destination.”Mr Hopgood said the fact still remained that Australia and New Zealand still made up the highest number of guests to resorts and hotels along the Coral Coast, with a few Asian countries tourists visiting Fiji once in a while.Association members are expecting a decrease in occupancy rate towards mid November.

Study Affirms Ironsand Mine Viability

Amex Resources Limited’s bankable feasibility study for the Mba Delta ironsand project has confirmed the viability of the dredging operation over its planned 20-year life.The Australian mining company was earlier this year granted a 21-year mining lease to extract ironsands from the Ba River delta.Managing director, Matthew Collard, told the media that the feasibility study sets

out the plan for project implementation and civil works at their Lautoka port site.Works at the port are scheduled to be completed by the end of October 2013 and will incorporate the construction of a new wharf, storage shed and offices plus the delivery of all the marine fleet for the operation.Mr Collard said the construction of a sealed access road and perimeter fence are nearing completion.

Ministry To Sets Up Plan To Control Medication

THE Health Ministry has put a plan into action to address the issue of medicinal supply at the various hospitals and pharmacies in the country. Health Minister Doctor Neil Sharma said that because Government’s priority is providing the best health care for the citizens, the health ministry has taken important steps in ensuring all Fijians have access through designed plan provided by the Fiji Pharmaceutical Biomedical Services. “These strategies will address and avoid the shortages of medication and for the past months, the Ministry has been progressing through with providing the best health care for the people of Fiji, Minister said.There are five sections which includes; preparation, monitoring, planning, training and management.Dr Sharma said this five sections includes monitoring, establishing the

annual demand for medicine for the next year, basic inventory training for health staff at the divisional hospitals and improvement in the time of ordering of medication from the health facilities and improvement in the timely supply.He added that the FPBS has also measures to be taken to reduce the wastage of medicines through the improvement of stock holding activities and coordination on the donated items with the proper system in place for assessment and distribution.Dr Sharma has reassured the general public that the Ministry continues to research best practices to ensure that the best strategies are implemented to offer the best health care for the people.Meanwhile, the other focus now for the Ministry is to coordinate more responsive approach with their suppliers especially in areas of new supplier.

2012 Export Awareness SeminarInvestment Fiji will be organizing an export seminar on September 15 to address impediments to exports with South Pacific Island Countries (PICs).The Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Anti-Corruption, Public Enterprises, Industry, Tourism and Trade & Communications Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum will be the chief guest at the seminar in support of Investment Fiji’s initiatives.A number of agencies including the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, Biosecurity Authority of Fiji, Fiji Ports, Pacific Island Private Sector Organisation and the Fiji Revenue & Customs Authority have been invited to exchange information and provide solutions to overcoming barriers to trade with the PICs.This is the third seminar organised by Investment Fiji this year but this time around the seminar will only feature in Suva and is planned at a much bigger scale.It will cover specific areas such as Fiji’s trade relations with the Pacific Island Countries (PICs).This would include in-depth information on the Regional Trade Agreements, and overview and detailed discussion on the

negative list and general information on improving sustainable trade development with PICs.Investment Fiji chief executive, Ravuni Uluilakeba said: “We have been very successful in organizing two seminars earlier this year.”“We focused on areas such as Suva, Nausori, Sigatoka, Nadi, Labasa and Savusavu and it had been overwhelming to see good attendance.”He said this showed the commitment people of Fiji had in growing the economy through improved exports.He also said: “With the huge availability of resources in Fiji, we feel by creating awareness and identifying the obstacles to trade, we will not only be making better use of our resources but at the same time establish better trading relationships with the PICs.”A number of exporters have already registered their interest to participate at this seminar and Investment Fiji is still accepting registrations and interested participants can register at Investment Fiji Office in Suva. First Citizen Pays Tribute To ‘Empower Pacific’

His Excellency the President, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau officially launched the new logo and name change for “Empower Pacific” formerly known as Pacific Counseling Social Services.President Nailatikau commended the efforts by the organisation towards the contributions of development in the areas of health, education, and social services in the country.“Empower Pacific has worked continuously to work, very closely with various government agencies in Fiji including the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Social Welfare and Poverty Alleviation and the Correctional Department amongst others to provide professional counseling and social services”, the President told guests.The range of programs that have been offered by the organisation in conjunction with other government agencies have contributed towards a speedy revival of assistance into key areas of need.The head of state said these programs include counseling sessions for HIV AND Aids patients, the operation and support for Fiji’s hub centers which are focal points for HIV and Aids related treatment, awareness workshops on the prevention and management of sexually transmitted infections and diseases and the education and training of health worker.Ratu Epeli also highlighted the collective contributions made by civil

society organisations and stakeholders in addressing issues of global and regional concern.“We cannot stop HIV transmissions if we do not stop the stigma and discrimination; we have to address gender inequality as well as to eradicate gender based violence,” Ratu Epeli said.Ratu Epeli highlighted that the Fijian Government’s formal arrangements with Empower Pacific under various cooperation agreements demonstrate government’s recognition of the level of expertise and advice that civil societies can provide.Meanwhile, Empower Pacific chief executive officer Rhianon Vichta said that while today’s event focused on the organisation’s change in name, she said that Empower Pacific will continue to dedicate itself to the services offered to clients and remain committed to the organisation’s cause.“We have three reasons to the name change. No Brucellosis In Meat And Milk Confirms Health Ministry

Since the outbreak of brucellosis in cattle in June, 2009 in the Tailevu, the Animal Health and Production Division of the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) embarked on a campaign to test and slaughter infected cattle to get rid of the bacteria from cattle herds.A press conference was held by the Animal Health and Production at their headquarters in Toa Street, Vatuwaqa to discuss the progress on this programme.Director Animal Health and Production, Tomasi Tunabuna, said the testing and removal of diseased cattle was going well and gave reassurance there was nothing to fear as far as the consumption of the meat and milk of the cattle was concerned.“People need not worry; the meat is safe and the heating processes for the production of milk will make it safe for consumption,” he said. “We are going forward with the

removal of reactors and would like to inform the public that while the disease is dangerous because of the fact it could spread to humans, it can be avoided by restricting the movement of the cattle.”He said bigger countries like Australia also had such problems with cattle and that they were only able to get through it because the general public was well-informed on the matter. “We would like to thank the farmers and the general public for all their co-operation and would also like to work closely with the media to assist us with educating the public on this matter,” Mr Tunabuna said.He said there were a number of ways to deal with this problem but they opted to concentrate on the affected areas and remove the reactors from the farms.Mr Tunabuna said: “If we were delayed or if the farmers would have not been so cooperative with us then the spread of the disease would have been worse.”

Fijian Prime Minister Opens New Embassy In Abu Dhabi

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has officially opened Fiji's newest embassy in the United Arab Emirates. The embassy which is based in Abu Dhabi represents the Fijian Government's growing commitment to expanding Fiji's relations with the international community.This week the head of government was accorded the "Guest of Government" status by the government of the United Arab Emirates.Her Excellency the Minister of State of the UAE Ms Reem Al Hashimi delivered her address to guests at the event which included Fiji’s Heads of Diplomatic Missions based from

around the region, as well as diplomatic officials from other foreign missions based in the UAE. Academic and experienced diplomat Robin Nair will head Fiji's mission to the UAE and as Ambassador, will ensure that the interests of both countries are facilitated through this new embassy. The Prime Minister is accompanied by officials from Fiji's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Industry and Trade and government's investment body, Investment Fiji. In July this year, the Prime Minister opened another new embassy in South Korea.

E-Ticketing In EffectMore than 240 students of eight schools in the Central Division made their mark in Fiji history when they were the first to use e-ticketing cards in buses.A total of 97 buses have been installed with e-ticketing machines by two bus companies.Land Transport Authority ‘(LTA) officers and Telecommunications Fiji Limited (TFL) officers assisted bus drivers and the students on how to use e-ticketing cards.LTA media spokesperson Alfred Wiliame said schools were for the first phase of this exercise. Over 2000 students had received e-ticket cards from TFL which was given to their respective schools.Each student with a card had his/her name and card number on it which is read by the console as soon as it receives the card.“The cards and the e-ticketing console is controlled and monitored by the TFL back office where a transaction is retrieved by the system as soon as the card is swiped on the console.” A student takes the card and gives it to the driver who swipes it on the console.“The card is only accessible twice a day, which is in the morning from

home to school and in the afternoon from school to home,” Mr Wiliame said.He said the cards were post-paid and closed on each day’s transaction. Each day after the student had completed his journey back home he or she had to swipe the card again to close the process.The cards also have a validity which expires at the closure of the school term and is renewed when a new school term begins.Meanwhile TFL officer Vuli Senikaloni said students and drivers would continue to receive training by them until they automatically had it right.“We will be monitoring the buses and the students on how they use the cards as we will assist them,”A Class Two student of Stella Maris Primary School, Elai Phillip, said the system was easy, however the rush made things confusing for him on this first day.More schools are expected to join the e-ticketing process. Meanwhile TFL and LTA continue to hold talks with other bus companies to come on board to revolutionaries the bus industry with e- ticketing.

Chinese Delegates Show Interest In Rice Farming

A high-level Chinese delegation specializing in rice cultivation was in the country for the last two weeks looking at options in which China can assist in Fiji’s current rice revitalization programme.The delegation consisted of rice researchers, rice mechanization experts and others specializing in the general cultivation of the crop such as pest and disease control and recommended fertilizers and chemicals for rice under irrigation and rain fed areas.Senior agriculture officer for rice, Jone Matawalu said the group was here to see for themselves ways in which China could assist the rice industry in Fiji. “After a three-day visit to the rice growing areas up in the North, there had been some recommendations made by the delegation which they say will bring more efficiency in the cultivation of rice in Fiji,” he said.Mr Matawalu said the group visited and held discussions with farmers in the Dreketi and Bua areas where the bulk of rice for local consumption is currently being produced under irrigation schemes. “They had visited the Dreketi Irrigation stages one, two and three, Nasarawaqa Irrigation Scheme, Korokadi Irrigation

Scheme and the Droca Irrigation Scheme,” he said.The group also visited the Rewa Rice Mill complex in Dreketi and proposed a new rice mill in Dreketi that could be built with their assistance that will be smaller in size and much more economical in terms of operation costs.“Currently a major problem faced by the rice farmers in the Northern Division which results in low rice production is the unavailability of labourers to work in the fields and the introduction of machinery for rice cultivation can ease this problem,” Mr Matawalu said.He said the visiting Chinese delegation also indicated they would look into the issue of appropriate machines to be brought in from China to assist this farmers overcome the problem of labour shortages.“Because of the high production costs the local rice at $1.50 costs more than the imported rice with price range from $0.90 to $1.30 per kilogram,” Mr Matawalu said.This feasibility study would also determine how farmers can grow rice locally at a reduced cost to ensure the availability of affordable rice to our consumers.

B1 Rating For FijiMoody's Investor Services has given the Fiji government a B1 rating saying it reflected a low level of economic resiliency, low government financial susceptibility to event risk."Some of Fiji's statistical indicators — notably external debts ratios — compare favorably against rating peers," the credit report said.However, the ratings were constrained by other factors such as low economic resiliency as indicated by the small size of our economy and a "very low GDP per capita", it added."The government's financial strength is assessed as low because of the high ratios of government debt and interest payments to government revenue."The report said this was mitigated by two factors, which were that most of the government debt was held by the Fiji National Provident Fund, which would continue to invest in government securities over the medium term.The other factor was that the proportion of debt denominated in foreign currency was small, which meant that the government was not vulnerable to exchange rate risk or to adverse conditions in global financial markets.The negative outlook on Fiji was also maintained by Moody's, which thought that economic growth remained lackluster and had an adverse effect of the "trajectory of government debt".However, the rating could improve if the trajectories of the external current account balance and the government's fiscal balance improve.The Reserve Bank of Fiji revised its GDP growth forecast upwards in June this year from 2.3 per cent to 2.7 per cent.Announcing this revised growth projection, Governor Barry Whiteside said it incorporated the impact of the 2012 National Budget policies, the recent floods, revised outlook for the global economy and our major trading partner economies, as well as recent developments in the domestic economy.

Energy Minister In Malta For Irena Summit The Minister for Works Transport and Public Utilities Hon Timoci Lesi Natuva is currently in Malta attending the upcoming International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) - Renewable and Islands Global Summit. He is accompanied by the Director of Energy Mr Epeli Nakavulevu.The International Renewable Energy Agency has been given a strong mandate to take the lead regionally and globally in accelerating the adoption of renewable energy as a key component of sustainable development. Through the provisions of its Statute, and the Assembly decisions to date, the Agency has been requested to focus, as one of its priorities, on the accelerated deployment of renewable energy in islands. In 2011, this work has been concentrated on technology solutions, and the geographic focus has been on the Pacific region. In 2012, programmatic activities continue in the Pacific region, but are also being expanded to encompass Island States globally.The Malta Summit will take place at an opportune time, as the efforts to promote sustainable energy solutions are at the heart of the global energy debate, under the umbrella of the UN International Year of Sustainable Energy for All and the UN Secretary-General’s initiative Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL).Commitment to sustainable energy,

however, is not a short-term endeavor; it will require a long-term commitment and combined efforts from the international community. The UN Secretary-General’s SE4ALL agenda sets three broad goals for 2030: ensuring universal access to modern energy services; doubling the rate of improvement in energy efficiency; and doubling the share of renewable in the global energy mix. As part of this effort, IRENA is dedicated to supporting countries to achieve these ambitious long-term goals.The nature of the challenges involved in working toward universal access to energy and improving energy efficiency is well recognized. It is our conviction that the promotion and accelerated deployment of renewable energy will play a crucial role as part of this global effort. This is particularly pertinent in the context of islands, considering their unique circumstances and vulnerabilities. It is widely recognized that a new perspective and enhanced commitment are necessary to ensure a sustainable energy future. The European Island Agenda considers non-renewable energy sources as, “provisional solutions, inadequate to solve in the long term the energy problems of the islands’’. Our meeting in Malta will give us a timely opportunity to examine these issues from the specific perspective of islands, in the context of the Year

of Sustainable Energy for All, and the outcome of the Rio+20 Conference.While each island has its own distinct conditions and circumstances, islands also share a number of common needs and problems. Most islands around the world today are dependent on imported fossil fuels for the majority of their energy needs, especially for transport and electricity generation. For reasons of scale and isolation, energy infrastructure costs are higher, and the impact of oil price and supply volatility has been severe, exacerbated by the small size of local markets. These vulnerabilities accentuate similar challenges faced by other countries in general.Studies have shown that, in the span of six years, the increase in the price in petroleum has cost most Pacific Island Countries and Territories some 10 per cent of their gross national income. Similar trends are encountered by Caribbean and Indian Ocean Islands. On the other side of the globe, estimates indicate that, out of the total value of imports, energy often accounts for more than 15% in the islands in the European Union. Fuel imports thus come at a great expense and pose a significant constraint on development; they crowd out vital capital and social expenditures and inhibit much needed economic growth.Several Islands States have adopted visionary strategies and targets to find

sustainable solutions to their energy challenges. Renewable energy sources have been shown to be economically viable in small island energy systems, since their viability is less dependent on size and fuel handling infrastructure than fossil fuel technologies. Some islands have become a lighthouse for the possibilities that renewable energy offers, by showing that their energy demands indeed can be satisfied mainly or entirely from indigenous and renewable sources.Key issues to be discussed:• Realising the high potential for

renewable energy to address the islands’ energy needs and access in a sustainable way;

• Pooling of knowledge and exchange of ideas between islands, with different levels of development;

• Sharing best practice, and showcasing examples of innovative solutions;

• The role of renewables in power generation and end use sectors;

• Possible areas of future collaboration;

• Ensuring that IRENA’s islands-related activities correspond to the priority concerns; and

• Using the Rio+20 outcomes as a platform to draw attention to energy needs of islands and the potential that renewable sources present.

RBF Reports Strong Insurance Industry Fiji’s insurance industry reported another year of strong performance in 2011 despite the high economic losses recorded globally, according to Reserve Bank of Fiji’s 2011 Insurance Annual Report tabled Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama on August 28.In the report, Governor Barry Whiteside attributed the strong form by the local industry to stable investment income and the notable absence of severe catastrophes during this period.Whiteside said domestic insurance

industry recorded a growth of 6.4 per cent in gross premiums to $221.2 million, a higher growth compared to 0.9 per cent in 2010.He said improvement was noted in the solvency surplus of both the life and general insurance sectors in 2011.The introduction of micro-insurance was further enhanced as part of the national initiative to promote greater financial inclusion through the provision of affordable insurance plans to low income earners.Whiteside said RBF was pleased to note

the increased effort of industry players in seeking to improve regulatory compliance and contribute to ensuring a sound and safe insurance industry for Fiji.He added RBF will continue to develop the policy environment conducive to the growth of the insurance industry, as well as enhancing its supervisory role.The 2011 Insurance Annual Report also includes highlights of developments in the international insurance market.Globally, 2011 saw the highest economic losses from natural

catastrophes and manmade disasters on record and the second highest insured losses ever.The total economic losses significantly increased from the US$226 billion experienced in 2010 to a massive US$370 billion in 2011, while insured losses were reported at US$116 billion.


Pacific Sun Improves Operations Domestic carrier Pacific Sun says it has improved its operational performance on on-time arrivals, fleet reliability, and completion factor in August."This year's marked improvement in operational performance follows on the heels of some very poor results late last year and in January and February, so we are thrilled to let our passengers and the public know that we have fixed our fleet and restored reliability and consistency to Pacific Sun's operations," Pacific Sun Shaenaz Voss general manager said."Our disappointing results six months ago were largely the result of our decision to prohibit 18-seat turbo-prop DH-6 Otter commercial flights in adverse weather until our entire DH-6 Otter fleet was equipped with weather radar systems, GPS and new avionics equipment — equipment similar to that found in our much larger and much faster 42-seat ATR-42 turbo-prop aircraft."Thus, we are equally excited to provide everyone with another update on our continual fleet investments to enhance airline performance, especially the extensive upgrades we are currently making to all of Pacific Sun's 18-seat turbo-prop DH-6 Otters."Pacific Sun's on-time performance (OTP) for August was 96 per cent with year to date overall OTP performance (January to August) at a record-high 88 per cent.OTP is an airline industry standard

Fiji’s Ministry of Social Welfare, Women, and Poverty Alleviation advise that they are not in a position to make comments on each of the social welfare cases raised before the Constitution Commission.But recipients are advised to seek redress through their district and divisional offices.The ministry has advised that it is currently working on a reform agenda to streamline social welfare programs in Fiji.Permanent secretary Govind Sami has confirmed that the reform agenda is emanating from the review of social welfare programs by the World Bank Social Protection team in 2010.

Japan To Help Pay For Tsunami Debris Cleanup

The Japanese government will help pay for the disposal of debris washing up on Canadian and American shores due to the catastrophic tsunami which hit the country last year, according to press reports from Tokyo. Japan does not have to take care of such debris under international law, but in a report on Monday the English-language Nikkei newspaper said officials would announce a plan to provide assistance to the U.S. and Canada later this month. According to Japan's English-language Kyodo News network, Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimara confirmed a strategy for retrieving the debris could be drawn up before the end of September. Beaches like landfills Experts estimate more than 1.5 million tonnes of debris were swept out to sea when the tsunami struck on March 11, 2011. The Kuroshio ocean current runs from

Alleged Drug Cartel Leader Extradited To US From Mexico After Nearly 3 Years

Alleged drug cartel member Eduardo Arellano-Felix, 55, was extradited from Mexico to the United States to face charges of racketeering, money laundering and narcotics trafficking, U.S. Attorney Laura E. Duffy announced.Arellano-Felix was arrested by Mexican authorities in Tijuana, Mexico, on Oct. 25, 2008, after a gun battle with a Mexican Special Tactical Team. An extradition order to the U.S. was granted in 2010, followed by two years of unsuccessful appeals.Arellano-Felix – allegedly a top leader in the Arellano-Felix Organization (AFO) -- finally arrived in San Diego. Mumbai Metro Bridge Slab Collapse; 1 Killed, 11 Injured

A section of an under-construction Metro rail bridge collapsed on Tuesday, killing one and wounding 11. The incident occurred near Leela Hotel in suburban Marol when a huge slab caved in; disaster management department of the city's municipal corporation said. While one person, believed to be a construction worker employed at the site, was declared dead on arrival at the Seven Hills Hospital, another man is admitted in a critical condition with serious chest injuries. Translink Cracking Down On Fare Evaders And Graffiti

As thousands of students return to school, Transit Police in Metro Vancouver are cracking down on fare evaders with a new law that gives them more power to issue and collect escalating fines.Under the new rules, both Transit police and Transit security will be able to issue fare evasion tickets, and about a dozen police and security staff were at the busy Broadway station on Tuesday morning checking passengers tickets.Tickets will still start at $173, but will now increase to $213 unpaid after six months and to $273 if the fine isn't paid after one year.TransLink will also be able to send unpaid tickets to collection agencies and ICBC will be able to refuse to renew or issue a driver's licence or vehicle registration to those with unpaid fines.Previously fare evasion was considered

a provincial offence and ICBC was responsible for the collection of fines, something they admitted they failed to enforce. Fare gate graffitiTransLink is also installing new fare gates at transit stations to stop fare evasion, which are expected to start operating sometime in 2013.But transit police are already looking for one vandal who damaged six new fare gates at the Marine Drive Station just before midnight on August 31. Canadians Happy With Job Security: Survey

We seem more optimistic about the hiring plans and growth prospects of companies we work for than we were this time last year, according to the annual BMO Labour Day survey.The report, which was released last Sunday, shows that 41% of Canadians believe their company is growing and expect it will be hiring this year. Almost two-thirds are comfortable with their job security (up 13 percentage points from 2011), and four-in-ten expect to receive a raise or promotion this year (up 11 percentage points from 2011).

Only 22% expect their company will be laying off employees."Canadian job security is fairly good, with our 7.3% unemployment rate below historic norms," said Sal Guatieri, a BMO spokesman. "Canadians should expect wages to rise modestly faster than inflation, supporting household purchasing power, with the strongest gains in Alberta and Saskatchewan."The survey says those living in Saskatchewan and Manitoba are most comfortable with job security and are most likely to expect a raise or promotion in the coming year.

Tougher Drunk Driving Penalties To Hit Alberta Streets

Police remind drivers to have a Plan B if going out for drinksNew penalties for Alberta drivers who have a blood alcohol level of between .05 and .08 per cent came into effect on Sept. 1.The province says drivers with that much alcohol in their blood will be subject to an immediate three-day suspension of their driver's licence and their vehicle will be impounded for 72 hours.The penalties go up for repeat offenders.Currently, drivers who have a blood alcohol level between .05 and .08 are subject to a 24-hour licence suspension at the discretion of a police officer.

Acting Insp. Michael Watterston of the traffic unit says Calgary police support the tougher penalties as a way of discouraging people who drink alcohol from getting behind the wheel.He said this is another tool for officers to impose immediate roadside sanctions."Certainly the message here is for motorists to be aware of the new changes that have come into force and, clearly, it is so important for individuals who do choose to go out and consume alcohol to have a Plan B," he said.Alberta's Justice Minister Jonathan Denis says the second phase of tougher penalties is about making the province's roads safer because nobody has the right to drive drunk.

Jean Charest Bids Farewell As Liberals Lose To PQ

Apples were associated with a lower risk of death from both coronary heart disease and cardiovascular disease in the Iowa Women’s Health Study, which has been tracking 34,000-plus women for nearly 20 years. Finnish researchers studying dietary data collected over 28 years from 9,208 men and women found that frequent apple eaters had the lowest risk of suffering strokes compared with nonapple eaters. What explains the hearty benefits? Restaurant portions these days are so large that you can usually get at least two meals from one restaurant meal.-For the smaller appetite, ask if the restaurant has child portions or half portions, or split an entree with your spouse. Even if there is a small charge, it's still cheaper than paying for two entrees and having leftovers from both.-Vacation rule #1: Go off-season and save big time.-Make money from work you love. They often mean more than store-bought items.-When shopping for gifts of any kind, be sure to do so only if items are on sale or discounted. Set aside some space in one closet in your house for a "goodie locker." During the year, as you find items on sale that would make nice, and inexpensive, gifts, buy them and stash them in the goodie locker. Then, when you need a last-minute

hostess gift, or realize you almost forgot someone's birthday, you can shop the goodie locker and know you have a nice gift that didn't break the budget. I carry this idea through to my Christmas shopping, too. All year long, as I see a gift I think would be perfect for a friend or family member, I buy it and stash it in the goodie locker till Christmas. Makes Christmas shopping much easier (I don't have to try to remember where I saw it!) and spreads the cost throughout the year.

Gently squeeze gun handle as you move along the perimeter of each window, laying down a solid seal of caulk as you go. 6. Cut double-sided tape with scissors to fit along the inside of window pane.7. Peel one side of the backing off of the tape and stick it to the window frame.8. Peel off the exposed side of the double-sided tape on the top of the window.9. Starting at one of the corners, stick the plastic sheeting to the tape, forming a complete seal. Leave about an inch overlap to be trimmed later. Move slowly across the window, sticking the plastic to the tape.10. Repeat for the sides and bottom edges of the window.11. Trim excess plastic with scissors or a utility knife.12. Smooth out any wrinkles in the plastic by using a blow dryer. Keep the setting on low and slowly pass it over the plastic to shrink it to fit your window.13. Repeat this process to seal every window in your house. ICBC'S Tips To Help Parents And Drivers Keep Children Safe As School Returns

The start of a new school year is an exciting time for children and ICBC wants to help them get to and from school safely. Sadly, on average, 33 children (aged five to 18) are killed and 5,090 injured in 15,365 crashes every year in B.C.These tragedies are preventable. We’re offering tips for drivers, parents and students to help them do their part to keep children safe on our roads as they head back to school:Tips for drivers:• Now that school’s back, don’t

forget that every school day, unless otherwise posted, a 30-km/h speed limit is in effect in school zones from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Vehicles approaching from both directions must stop for school buses when their lights are flashing.

• Plan ahead and be alert. Driving routes will be busier, so give yourself extra time to get to your destination. Look for children near or around crosswalks and intersections.

• Always yield to pedestrians – it’s the law.

• If a vehicle is stopped in front of you or in the lane next to you, they may have yielded to a pedestrian, so be prepared to stop.

• Watch for pedestrians when you’re backing up. Before getting into your vehicle, make it a habit to walk around your vehicle to make sure no small children are behind it.

• When dropping off children in school zones stop and allow them to exit the car on the side closest to the sidewalk. Never allow a child

to cross mid-block.Tips for parents and students:

Post these safety tips in your home and review them with your children – even older children need to be reminded about road safety.• Remove your headphones and put

away your phone or other gadgets when crossing a street. Focus on the road so you can see, hear and respond safely.

• As parents, we can help by reviewing the rules of the road with our children and going over their route to school. Try to make lessons fun and interactive. You could teach your child to memorize the chorus of “Walk ‘n’ Roll,” a song by children’s musician Will Stroet, which is included in ICBC’s kindergarten to grade three road safety curriculum: “Wear something bright; Look left and look right; Wait for the light; Make sure you’re in the driver’s eyesight.”

• Use designated crossing points and follow pedestrian traffic signs and signals. Make eye contact with drivers, so you both know you see each other. Teach your child to cross at intersections that have a pedestrian crossing light or a marked crosswalk whenever possible. Even at a crosswalk, be aware of traffic and always make sure that vehicles are stopped before walking.

• Dress to be seen. Wear bright or light coloured clothing. In dark or bad weather, wear reflective material on clothes or accessories.

• Always walk on the inside edge of the sidewalk. This way, you’re further away from the traffic. If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic so you can see oncoming vehicles and drivers see you.

• Be aware of parked vehicles in a parking lot or on the road. A driver may not see you between parked vehicles and you may not see them moving. Before crossing or walking through a parking lot, stop and look left-right-left around the parked vehicle. Encourage children to avoid taking shortcuts through parking lots.

ICBC provides free road safety educational materials to B.C. schools to help students learn about road safety using fun and interactive activities. The materials are unique to each grade level from kindergarten to grade 10. ICBC road safety speakers also share their personal stories with more than 50,000 high school students across the province every year to help motivate them to think twice before taking risks while driving. This fall, ICBC is also launching its annual Your Ad Here contest for high school students to create a print ad about road safety topics that will be featured in next year’s school agendas.Regional statistics*:• On average, 3,185 children (aged

Helping Kids Deal With BulliesHelping KidsIf your child tells you about a bully, focus on offering comfort and support, no matter how upset you are. Kids are often reluctant to tell adults about bullying because they feel embarrassed and ashamed that it's happening, or worry that their parents will be disappointed.Sometimes kids feel like it's their own fault, that if they looked or acted differently it wouldn't be happening. Sometimes they're scared that if the bully finds out that they told, it will get worse. Others are worried that their parents won't believe them or do anything about it. Or kids worry that their parents will urge them to fight back when they're scared to.Praise your child for being brave enough to talk about it. Remind your child that he or she isn't alone — a lot of people get bullied at some point. Emphasize that it's the bully who is behaving badly — not your child. Reassure your child that you will figure out what to do about it together.Sometimes an older sibling or friend can help deal with the situation. It may help your daughter to hear how the older sister she idolizes was teased about her braces and how she dealt with it. An older sibling or friend also might be able to give you some perspective on what's happening at school, or wherever the bullying is happening, and help you figure out the best solution.Take it seriously if you hear that the bullying will get worse if the bully finds out that your child told. Sometimes it's useful to approach the bully's parents. In other cases, teachers or counselors are the best ones to contact first. If you've tried those methods and still want to speak to the bullying child's parents, it's best to do so in a context where a school official, such as a counselor, can mediate.Many states have bullying laws and policies. Find out about the laws in your community. In certain cases, if you have serious concerns about your child's safety, you may need to contact legal authorities.Advice for KidsThe key to helping kids is providing strategies that deal with bullying on an

everyday basis and also help restore their self-esteem and regain a sense of dignity.It may be tempting to tell a kid to fight back. After all, you're angry that your child is suffering and maybe you were told to "stand up for yourself" when you were young. And you may worry that your child will continue to suffer at the hands of the bully.But it's important to advise kids not to respond to bullying by fighting or bullying back. It can quickly escalate into violence, trouble, and someone getting injured. Instead, it's best to walk away from the situation, hang out with others, and tell an adult.Here are some other strategies to discuss with kids that can help improve the situation and make them feel better:-Avoid the bully and use the buddy system. Use a different bathroom if a bully is nearby and don't go to your locker when there is nobody around. Make sure you have someone with you so that you're not alone with the bully. Buddy up with a friend on the bus, in the hallways, or at recess — wherever the bully is. Offer to do the same for a friend. -Hold the anger. It's natural to get upset by the bully, but that's what bullies thrive on. It makes them feel more powerful. Practice not reacting by crying or looking red or upset. It takes a lot of practice, but it's a useful skill for keeping off of a bully's radar. Sometimes kids find it useful to practice "cool down" strategies such as counting to 10, writing down their angry words, taking deep breaths or walking away. Sometimes the best thing to do is to teach kids to wear a "poker face" until they are clear of any danger (smiling or laughing may provoke the bully). -Act brave, walk away, and ignore the bully. Firmly and clearly tell the bully to stop, and then walk away. Practice ways to ignore the hurtful remarks, like acting uninterested or texting someone on your cell phone. By ignoring the bully, you're showing that you don't care. Eventually, the bully will probably get bored with trying to bother you. -Tell an adult. Teachers, principals,

parents, and lunchroom personnel at school can all help stop bullying. -Talk about it. Talk to someone you trust, such as a guidance counselor, teacher, sibling, or friend. They may offer some helpful suggestions, and even if they can't fix the situation, it may help you feel a little less alone. -Remove the incentives. If the bully is demanding your lunch money, start bringing your lunch. If he's trying to get your music player, don't bring it to school.Reaching Out

At home you can lessen the impact of the bullying. Encourage your kids to get together with friends that help build their confidence. Help them meet other kids by joining clubs or sports programs. And find activities that can help a child feel confident and strong. Maybe it's a self-defense class like karate or a movement or other gym class.And just remember: as upsetting as bullying can be for you and your family, lots of people and resources are available to help.

Coconut Oil Combats Tooth Decay

Coconut oil is a natural antibiotic that attacks the bacteria causing tooth decay. It could be incorporated into commercial dental care products, say scientists.

Researchers from the Athlone Institute of Technology, Ireland, tested the antibacterial action of coconut oil in its natural state and coconut oil that had been treated with enzymes, in a process similar to digestion.They found that enzyme-modified coconut oil strongly inhibited the growth of most strains of Streptococcus bacteria which commonly inhabit the mouth, including Streptococcus mutants - an acid - producing bug that is a major cause of tooth decay.Damien Brady who is leading the research at Athlone, said: "Dental carries is a commonly overlooked health problem affecting 60-90 percent of children and the majority of adults in industrialized countries."

Additional testing by the Athlone Institute found that enzyme-modified coconut oil was also harmful to the yeast Candida albicans that can cause thrush.Researchers suggest that enzyme-modified coconut oil has potential as a marketable antimicrobial which could be of particular interest to the oral health care industry, according to an Athlone statement."Incorporating enzyme-modified coconut oil into dental hygiene products would be an attractive alternative to chemical additives, particularly as it works at relatively low concentrations. Also, with increasing antibiotic resistance, it is important that we turn our attention to new ways to combat microbial infection," added Brady.

Organic Food 'Not Any Healthier'

Eating organic food will not make you healthier, according to researchers at Stanford University, although it could cut your exposure to pesticides.They looked at more than 200 studies of the content and associated health gains of organic and non-organic foods. Overall, there was no discernible difference between the nutritional content, although the organic food was 30% less likely to contain pesticides.Critics say the work is inconclusive and call for more studies.The research, published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, looked at 17 studies comparing people who ate organic with those who did not and 223 studies that compared the levels of nutrients, bacteria, fungus or pesticides in various foods - including fruits, vegetables, grains, meats, milk and eggs.None of the human studies ran for longer than two years, making conclusions about long-term outcomes impossible. And all of the available evidence was relatively weak and highly variable - which the authors say is unsurprising because of all the different variables, like weather and soil type, involved.Fruit and vegetables contained similar amounts of vitamins, and milk the same amount of protein and fat - although a few studies suggested organic milk contained more omega-3. Organic foods did contain more nitrogen, but the researchers say this is probably due to differences in fertilizer use and ripeness at harvest and is unlikely to provide any health benefit.Their findings support those of the UK's Food Standards Agency, which commissioned a review a few years ago into organic food claims.

Prof Alan Dangour, of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, who carried out that work, said: "Consumers select organic foods for a variety of reasons, however this latest review identifies that at present there are no convincing differences between organic and conventional foods in nutrient content or health benefits. "Hopefully this evidence will be useful to consumers."Dr Crystal Smith-Spangler, the lead author of the latest review, said there were many reasons why people chose to eat organic, including animal welfare or environmental concerns. "Some believe that organic food is always healthier and more nutritious. We were a little surprised that we didn't find that."There isn't much difference between organic and conventional foods, if you're an adult and making a decision based solely on your health."But the Soil Association said the study was flawed. "Studies that treat crop trials as if they were clinical trials of medicines, like this one, exaggerate the variation between studies, and drown out the real differences. "A UK review paper, using the correct statistical analysis, has found that most of the differences in nutrient levels between organic and non-organic fruit and vegetables seen in this US study are actually highly significant."A Department of Health spokeswoman said: "Evidence has not yet emerged that there are nutritional benefits from eating organically produced foods compared to conventionally produced foods. We will continue to review research on this subject."

Tests showed that up to 10 times the amount of pathogens which cause nausea and stomach upsets were present on a mobile phone than a toilet seat.Charles Gerba, professor of microbiology at the University of Arizona, said during his ongoing experiments he has found that bugs get onto a phone because it is so close to our hands and mouths.When somebody lets a friend or a stranger use their mobile their bacteria easily gets onto the device too.Gerba added that because mobiles are

electronic some people are reticent about cleaning. Since they are just not part of our cleaning routine. But they should be wiped with an antibacterial substance every now and then.Previous research has found that other things we assume are clean are in reality rather disgusting.British scientists discovered that cash machines have similar levels of pseudomonads and bacillus, bacteria which are known to cause sickness and diarrhea, as they found in public toilets.Computer keyboards are also five times dirtier than the average lavatory seat.

Using Cellphones, Tablets Before Bedtime Affects Sleep

If you happen to be one of those who often find it difficult to fall asleep at night, the reason could be usage of cellphones or tablets at bedtime.

Researchers in the US have found using an electronic gadget for just two hours before the bedtime can cause sleep problems.The new study from the Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute believes the displays cause melatonin suppression.Melatonin is the chemical that controls our body clock.Researchers believe that the teenagers are particularly susceptible to the

problem."Our study shows that a two-hour exposure to light from self-luminous electronic displays can suppress melatonin by about 22 percent," said Mariana Figueiro, associate professor at Rensselaer and director of the LRC's Light and Health Programme.Figueiro says that stimulating the human circadian system to this level may affect sleep in those using the devices prior to bedtime.

Dining With Friends Can Make You Fat

Dining with a friend could be bad for those on a diet - it tempts you into eating unhealthy dishes from the menu, just to keep him or her in good humour, says a study.

Researchers led by Eric Robinson, psychologist at the University of Birmingham, believe it may help to explain why groups of friends often put on weight at the same time and why some women complain that they get heavier when they find a boyfriend - they start to copy his eating habits."There is a lot of evidence that points towards this idea that your friends make you fat. If you have got friends or people you know who have put on weight recently, then you will put on weight too," said Robinson."We found that pairing people with unhealthy eating partners reduced the amount of healthy food they were eating. They tended to pick the foods that were high in calories," added

Robinson."Recognizing that this effect is real could help people who are trying to watch what they eat. They could even look at a menu and try to decide what they are eating before those they are with to help avoid being influenced," the media quoted Robinson, said.The research asked 100 female volunteers to select from a choice of food consisting of healthy fruit and vegetables or unhealthy foods including crisps, pastries and cocktail sausages.They found that when they were eating with someone who had been asked to pick unhealthy options, the volunteers also picked far more of these compared to when they ate alone or with someone who chose healthier foods.

Fat, Not Sugar, Contributes To Type-2 Diabetes

Fat, not sugar, contributes to the more common Type-2 diabetes, said a leading scientist of the Visva Bharati University.

"Diabetes exists in two forms, Type-1 and Type-2. Ninety-six to ninety-seven percent of patients exhibit the latter type," explained Samir Bhattacharya, while speaking at the Frontiers of Science conference organised by the Centre for Natural Sciences and Philosophy and the Critical Issues Forum, Kolkata.In the first type, insulin, the hormone responsible for breaking down glucose in the body for utilisation, is not produced in sufficient quantities, whereas in the latter type, insulin is sufficient but not active."Insulin is produced but it is not active, and we have shown the exact mechanism why this happens. This should aid in designing drugs for Type-2 diabetes, which is presently treated with drugs for Type-1 diabetes," said Samir Bhattacharya who headed the study at the Cellular and Molecular Endocrinology Laboratory of the Zoology Department of the university in West Bengal's Birbhum district.

In the breakthrough study published in the science journal "Nature," the scientists have zeroed in on the specific substance Fetuin-A, that can be a potential drug-therapy target.Fetuin-A, a protein secreted by the liver, is produced in higher levels when there is excessive free fatty acids in the blood. It blocks fat uptake by cells - adipocytes - responsible for storing excess fat.It links the fatty acids with a receptor, and this combination in turn releases substances called cytokines, a component of the immune system that helps in signalling or carrying messages between cells.These cytokines make cells insulin-resistant and therefore hamper insulin activity."Excess free fatty acids therefore hamper insulin sensitivity of cells, so it is best to avoid saturated fats as far as possible," concluded Bhattacharya.

Early influencesThe earliest evidence of human life in the region is a 40,000-year-old skull found in Sarawak’s Niah Caves. But it was only around 10,000 years ago that the aboriginal Malays, the Orang Asli, began moving down the peninsula from a probable starting point in southwestern China.By the 2nd century AD, Europeans were familiar with Malaya, and Indian traders had made regular visits in their search for gold, tin and jungle woods. Within the next century Malaya was ruled by the Funan Empire, centered in what’s now Cambodia, but more significant was the domination of the Sumatra-based Srivijayan empire between the 7th and 13th centuries.In 1405 the Chinese admiral Cheng Ho arrived in Melaka with promises to the locals of protection from the Siamese encroaching from the north. With Chinese support, the power of Melaka extended to include most of the Malay Peninsula. Islam arrived in Melaka around this time and soon spread through Malaya. European influenceMelaka’s wealth and prosperity attracted European interest and it was taken over by the Portuguese in 1511, then the Dutch in 1641 and the British in 1795.In 1838 James Brooke, a British adventurer, arrived to find the Brunei sultanate fending off rebellion from inland tribes. Brooke quashed the rebellion and in reward was granted power over part of Sarawak. Appointing himself Raja Brooke, he founded a dynasty that lasted 100 years. By 1881 Sabah was controlled by the British government, which eventually acquired Sarawak after WWII when the third Raja Brooke realised he couldn’t afford the area’s up-keep. In the early 20th century the British brought in Chinese and Indians, which radically changed the country’s racial make-up.Independence to the current dayMalaya achieved merdeka (independence) in 1957, but it was followed by a period of instability due to an internal Communist uprising and an external confrontation with neighbouring Indonesia. In 1963 the north Borneo states of Sabah and Sarawak, along with Singapore, joined Malaya to create Malaysia. In 1969 violent interracial riots broke out, particularly in Kuala Lumpur, and hundreds of people were killed. The government moved to dissipate the tensions, which existed mainly between the Malays and the Chinese. Present-day Malaysian society is

relatively peaceful and cooperative.Led from 1981 by outspoken Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysia’s economy grew at a rate of over 8% per year until mid-1997, when a currency crisis in neighbouring Thailand plunged the whole of Southeast Asia into recession. After 22 momentous years, Dr Mahathir Mohamad retired on 31 October 2003. He handed power to his anointed successor, Abdullah bin Ahmad Badawi, who went on to convincingly win a general election in March 2004. 2012 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew CabThere are some among us who cannot fathom the use of a small pickup truck. Whether they need it for work or just because they like to look over every other vehicle on the road, the three-quarter or full-ton pickup is the only one that counts. For those people, there’s a Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD.Actually, that model Silverado will only appeal to Chevy loyalists, because pickup truck buyers are probably the most loyal in the world.I could sit here and write about how much better the Silverado 2500HD is than the Ford Super Duty F-250 or the Ram 2500, and the Chevy people would think to themselves “Damn straight,” while the Ford and Ram loyalists would think “This guy’s hauling a bedload of crap.”And the Chevy people are reading this to validate their beliefs while the Ford and Ram people are anticipating the Chevy falling on its shiny face.It’s a no win situation for writers when evaluating full-sized pickups, so I’ll just say that if big things come in small packages, then humongous things come in big packages.The Chevy Silverado 2500HD is big. Not just big as in full-sized, but big as in massive. Everything about it is big – big grille, big bulging hood, big doors, big roomy seats front and rear, big bed (which is nearly full width, unlike a competitor who has innovative bed-wall storage that noticeably narrows the bed width). Big, big, big.It’s got a big engine, too – 6.6-litres of Duramax diesel V8 with enough torque (765 lb.-ft. of enough) to not only yank out stumps, it will probably yank down the tree in order to avoid pulling out the stump. Power is sent to either the rear axle or both front and rear axles by an Allison six-speed automatic (that’s the one that reportedly goes into tanks … the 2500 HD could probably haul a tank, too). The transfer case is a dial on the

dash. Remember the days when you had to get out of the cabin and turn a little dial on the front wheel hubs to make sure the wheels would turn with the axle when you were in four wheel drive mode? Same principle on this truck, except that the little dial is on the dash.The Silverado 2500HD is shiny too – chrome grille, chrome bumpers, chrome running boards, chrome wheels. About the biggest challenge I encounter is taking pictures without finding myself in the shot (and I’m sure you’ll see me in a couple photos). Yep, even worse than trying to climb up into the sucker (which admittedly is not an issue with the pillar mounted handles and running boards). Yep, even worse than loading up 1,000 kg worth of stuff to take to the dump. Yep, even worse than climbing up into the bed to push all the trash out.The latest presents a bit of conundrum – the Ford has a pull out step and a fold-down grab handle to help you step up, but the function gets in the way of practicality (you have to park farther away from dumpster; you have to fold the pole back down; etc. It’s not a problem, if you absolutely must have it, but for somebody new to the feature, it takes a bit getting used to.But despite its hugeness, the Silverado HD is a pretty comfortable vehicle, and not just in terms of space. The rear seat is roomier than that of some stretch limos, but it’s also nicely padded so you don’t actually feel as if you’re riding in a truck (except for the tell-tale signs, such as the grinding engine and pitchy ride). If you need a place to stow some things out of the elements, the rear seat bottoms easily fold up to create a pretty high and wide interior cargo hold.The Silverado 2500HD will cart away pretty much anything you need to take. And why not? When you got the size, everything else is easy.

An average household dedicates about 6% of its energy budget to lighting. Switching to energy-efficient lighting is one of the fastest ways to cut your energy bills. Timers and motion sensors save you even more money by reducing the amount of time lights are on but not being used.Tips: Indoor LightingYou have many choices in energy-efficient lighting. The most popular light bulbs available are halogen incandescent, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Although they can initially cost more than traditional incandescent bulbs, over their lifetime they save you money, because they use less energy.Energy-Saving (also called Halogen) Incandescent LightingEnergy-saving, or halogen, incandescent light bulbs are about

25% more efficient and can last up to three times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs. They are available in a wide range of shapes and colors, and can be used with dimmers.CFL LightingCFL Bulbs. ENERGY STAR qualified CFLs use about 75% less energy and last up to 10 times longer than traditional incandescent.CFL bulbs last about 10 times longer and use about one-fourth the energy of traditional incandescent bulbs. A typical CFL can pay for itself in energy savings in less than 9 months and continue to save you money each month. You can buy CFLs that offer the same brightness and colors as traditional incandescent bulbs. Some CFLs are encased in a cover to further diffuse the light and provide a similar shape to traditional incandescent bulbs.

CFLs contain a very small amount of mercury and require special handling if they are broken. CFLs should be recycled at the end of their lifespan. Many retailers recycle CFLs for free. LED bulbs are rapidly expanding in household use. ENERGY STAR-qualified LEDs use only about 20%-25% of the energy and last up to 25 times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs. • When remodeling, look for recessed light fixtures or "cans" which are rated for contact with insulation and are air tight.

• When replacing incandescent bulbs from recessed light fixtures, use energy-efficient bulbs that are rated for that purpose. For example, the heat buildup in down lights will significantly shorten the life of spiral CFLs.

• Consider purchasing ENERGY STAR-qualified fixtures. They are available in many styles; distribute light more efficiently and evenly than standard fixtures, and some offer convenient features such as dimming.

• Controls such as timers and photocells save electricity by turning lights off when not in use. Dimmers save electricity when used to lower light levels. Be sure to select products that are compatible with the energy-efficient bulbs you want to use.

• Keep your curtains or shades open to use day lighting instead of turning on lights. For more privacy, use light-colored, loose-weave curtains to allow daylight into the room. Also, decorate with lighter colors that reflect daylight.

Handy Tips For Smart Kitchen WorkTry out these handy tips for trouble free time in kitchen. Avoid sticky riceWash the rice a few times until the water runs clear. Remove all the water until no water remains. Let it sit for 20 minutes. This will remove all the starch and help the rice to remain separate. Also adding a few drops of lemon juice to the rice while cooking, you will find that the grains of rice will tend to remain separate.

2. For crispier puris Add a teaspoon of semolina (suji) and 1 teaspoon of rice flour to the wheat flour while kneading.

3. Quick tomato paste cubes Spoon tomato paste into ice cube trays. Freeze overnight. Transfer into plastic bags and freeze. Frozen cubes can be dropped right into curries.

4. Eggplants retaining colourWhen cooking eggplant add a spoon of milk to a bowl of water and add the cut up pieces to that water. The eggplant will retain their color without becoming black.

5. Remedy for salty curry Wash a potato. Cut into two. Place the two halves of the raw potato in the curry and it will absorb the extra salt. 6. Ready to use masalas Sometimes cooking requires a lot of

pre-preparation. Make masalas ahead of the time. Stock the masala in the freezer till not required for cooking. This method will save a lot of time.

7. How to cut an onion without crying? One can adopt any of these methods to cut onion without crying - peel and cut onions under running water. Chop onions near a gas flame. Or refrigerating onions before chopping.

8. Using kitchen scissors most One must use kitchen scissors to chop coriander leaves, mint leaves and chillies to avoid any kind of a mess. One can stock this for the purpose of garnishing.

9. Buying lemons and lime Buy large lemons and limes, they tend to be much sweeter. Make sure that the skin is thin, those are much juicer. To obtain more of the juice from lemons, limes or oranges, microwave on high for 30 seconds and then let stand for a couple of minutes before cutting and squeezing. Rolling them between your hand and the counter will also help release more juice.

10. Skinning a chicken with ease Always peel off a little part of the Chicken skin to start with and hold it tightly with a paper towel. The skin latches on to the paper towel.

Prime Minister Pays Tribute To “Golden Delana”Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama paid tribute to the recent win by Fiji’s Iliesa Delana at the 2012 London Paralympics.The 2012 Sportsman of the Year Award recipient became the first Fijian to win gold at the Paralympics after he beat six other athletes in the F42 Men’s High Jump.The Prime Minister said that Delana’s win in London is a win that should be celebrated by all Fijians.“This week, the whole world watched Mr Delana win gold for himself and for Fiji. This is something that we should be proud of and something we should celebrate”.“To win the first ever gold for Fiji

in the Paralympics is an enormous achievement. Sukhu Warns DistrictsThe Fiji Football Association has warned the districts to adhere to the rules when hosting Fiji SUN/GP Batteries National Football League matches.Competitions manager Jainendra Sukhu said some Super Premier teams failed to have sound systems in order to play their sponsor’s jingle before their match and during halftime interval.“There is a mandatory fine of $200 and all those districts that failed to honour our sponsor will be fined,” Sukhu said. “Furthermore it is noted that First Aid personnel with stretchers are not available during national league matches. The Bayside Rugby Club in Vancouver, Canada has been donating rugby jerseys to teams in Fiji for the past three years.Past recipients of the donations were the Qauia and Ratu Filise rugby clubs.Adi Nani Vulaca, who has been living in Canada for the past 20 years, presented the jerseys to the vanua of Namara over the weekend.“The club has been doing it for three years and they aim to make it an annual

event,”Adi Nani said.“Some Fijians play for the team and is managed by Lau native, Petaia Usakilakeba.”Adi Nani said the donation this year was more compared to previous years’ because 7s legends Waisale Serevi and Ben Gollings also contributed.“Serevi gave 13 rugby balls, socks and more,”Adi Nani said.“Gollings also contributed and we are grateful to the two rugby legends.”

NHL Won't Meet With Players NHL commissioner Gary Bettman will ask the owners for authorization to lock the players out at a board of governors meeting a couple of days before the current CBA expires, according to the New York Post.No negotiating sessions are scheduled for this week even though the clock is slowly ticking towards Sept. 15, when Bettman will shut down the league if he's granted approval. Talks broke down last week and show no signs of resuming.The Post reported that the NHL has rejected the NHLPA's offer to meet again to talk about "non-core" economic issues."We actually don't think that meeting on the other issues while the main

economic issues remain uncertain would be particularly constructive or productive in terms of resolving those issues," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly wrote in an email to The Post. "A lot has already been done and most of those issues are teed up for resolution if the main issues can be addressed."One of the NHL's proposals included a management rights clause that would allow the league to have total control over things like realignment, scheduling and the playoff format, according to the Post. Last season, the NHLPA scuttled the league's proposed four-conference format and playoff change, which would have come into effect in 2012-13.

Roberto Luongo, Vancouver Canucks Goalie, Says Return To Florida Panthers ‘Makes Sense’

The Vancouver Canucks goaltender, who is awaiting a trade after losing his No. 1 job to Cory Schneider, skated near his off-season home Tuesday and made it clear during an interview with the South Florida Sun Sentinel that his preference was to return to the Panthers.“(Florida) makes sense for myself, for my career and my family,” Luongo told the paper. “That being said, there’s obvious other options as well. This is a preferred location for obvious reasons but I’m not shutting the door on other possibilities if it comes up.”Toronto has been speculated as a possible landing spot for him.Current Panthers goalies Scott Clemmensen and Jose Theodore took to the ice for an informal practice with several teammates just moments after Luongo had finished his own skate.“It’s useless energy wasted on speculating what might happen with him,” Clemmensen said of Luongo. “We pretty much have the same lineup that we had last year, as far as goalies are concerned.

I feel like we did a great job last year, the three of us who played at this level anyway. I feel confident and very excited to be in the same kind of scenario.”Luongo spent five seasons in Florida

between 2001 and 2006, when he was dealt to Vancouver. He and his wife return to the area every summer with their young children.The 33-year-old has 10 years remaining

on his contract at a cap hit of $5.33 million and holds a no-trade clause.Luongo posted a 31-14-8 record last season with a .919 save percentage and 2.41 goals-against average. He’s dealt with speculation about his future in Vancouver for the past two seasons and it reached a new pitch when Schneider took over the No. 1 job during a first-round playoff loss to Los Angeles in the spring.Luongo, who backstopped Canada to gold at the Vancouver Olympics, maintains that he wants to be in a position where he gets the majority of starts. The veteran is willing to be patient while the Canucks look for a trade that makes sense.“You’re dealt different situations in life,” said Luongo. “You’ve got to handle them the right way. I don’t know what’s going to happen this year. The only thing I could do is work hard and have a positive attitude.“At the end of the day, I’m sure everything is going to work out.”
