    Introduction

This document is intended to provide information on how to perform commonly used functions of

the IMS File Manager. The detail level of the information provided is enough to perform these

tasks without the need of further reference.

However, for more detailed information, please refer the File Manager manual, a link to which is

provided in the Appendix. Also, please refer How to use HELP and get more information.

Note: The examples cited in this document are from the authors project, but are general enough

    to support the explanation.

    Templates

    Creating a Template

A Template allows one to associate a COBOL segment layout with each segment type in

a DBD. These are used in the Browse, Edit, Extract, View and Criteria functions.

Select Option 5 from the Primary Options menu.

The Template Entry Panel is displayed.

Next to the Data set name 1 field under DBD, one has to enter the dataset which contains the

DBD of the database one wants to process. The Member field would contain the DBD member

name in the dataset. It is also possible to list an additional dataset next to Data set name 2.

Under Template, the Data set name field lists the PDS which contains the template (if it alreadyexists) or which will hold the newly created template.

This PDS should already exist and should be created with a Record format of FB and a Record

    length of 80.

When creating a new Template, ensure that the layout copybooks members for each segment

are present in the Template data set listed above.

A layout is a description of the database segment provided by the user to File Manager. The

usual practice is to use the segment copybook from Endevor.

Once a template is created, a new copybook load member of the same name as the DBD isplaced in the Template dataset.

    A. If a template already exists in the listed PDS, the next screen Template Specification, shown

below, says that the existing template has been loaded.

    B. For a new template, the source datasets entered in the previous screen are confirmed on the

Library List screen. Also, one can enter additional dataset names for use in the following

screens, if needed. Note that another dataset CHV0257.PRIVATE.JCL has been entered in the

Note that the Layout Member column has an entry for each segment under the ID Segment

column. The Lib column states the position of the source dataset in the list specified on the

    LibraryList screen.

It is possible to mention more than one layout for a particular segment. This is done by inserting

another row for any particular segment with I in the Cmd column. Type in the new layout name

and press Enter. The display for another layout for VFA11 is shown below. The new layout is

    VFA12.

The added layout can be deleted by typing D against it under the Cmd column.

A text description can be entered for a segment under the Segment Description column. A 01

level can be inserted into the layout by specifying Y under the 01 column. If a 01 level already

exists, the Y is ignored. If the 01 is selected, an optional field name in the generated copybooks

can be specified under the Field Name column.

After the template has been designed to ones satisfaction, press F3.

How to use Help and get more information

    General

File Manager has a very detailed and highly informative HELP facility. At any screen, this feature

can be activated by pressing the F1 key.

A menu driven HELP section on that particular screen is presented. On many File Manager

screens, the HELP would generally include:

    1. General information

    2. Primary commands

    3. Prefix commands

    4. Screen fields and their description

    5. Other information

In addition, positioning the cursor on some fields on some screens and pressing F1 will display

additional information on that particular field.

    Browsing HELP

Within a HELP screen, UP and DOWN are mapped to F10 and F11. B takes you one HELP

screen back, and N one HELP screen forward. From any HELP screen, it is possible to go

through all subsequent screens in the order of presentation by simply hitting ENTER.

F3 exits HELP and back to the File Manager screen from where HELP was invoked.
