the weekends — to get our minds right (for the tournament),” Weaver said, adding that the team’s goal was simply to, “have fun.”

Callahan, Durga and Weaver had bowled together for the past two years, with Smith joining the team at the begin-ning of the season.

“(It was) competitive,” Smtih said. “(There were) a lot of good teams.)

Finishing in second place were this year’s Conference A champi-ons, the 14th MP Bde., which included team members Greg Klein-holz, Jay Junius, Mark Arnold and

Curt Schroeder.The 252nd Military

Police Detachment team of Rian Hayes, Desiree Hunt, Mare Witherspoon and Tyrece Hopkins took home the third-place trophy.

Rounding out the tour-nament was the Medical Department Activity, which placed fourth, the 84th Chemical Battalion, which took fifth, and the 43rd Adjutant General Battalion, which took sixth. All six teams that took part in the tourna-ment were required to place in the top three in their respective conferences.

In addition to taking home the first-place

trophy, Callahan said the team was happy to represent the 102nd TD in Fort Leonard Wood’s sports program.

“We don’t get the opportunity that often, because we’re not a large organization,” Cal-lahan said. “We’re really happy to get our name out there.”

“(That’s) one win for (the) USAR,” Smith added.

Service members will soon have a chance to represent their units in two other upcoming sports, according to Coleman Swinton, Fam-ily and Morale, Welfare and Recreation chief of sports.

“Be on the lookout for soccer and recreational golf (letters of intent),” Swinton said. “They will be coming out soon.”

Units can file their letters with the Sports Department at Davidson Fitness Center. For more information, contact DFC at the front desk or call 573.596.4359.

The Missouri Department of Conservation estimates that Mis-souri is home to between 540 and

840 black bears with most being in the southern part of the state. As spring gets underway, these mammals are leaving their winter dens in search of food. As a result, MDC officials want to remind Missouri residents to “Be Bear Aware.”

At this time of year, it is imperative that residents remove bear attractants from their property, such as bird feed-ers, trash, barbeque grills, pet food and food waste, according to Laura Conlee, MDC resource scientist and furbearer biologist.

“As black bears become active in the spring, they are on a mission to find food,” Conlee said. “Keeping areas free of attractants and letting bears find natural foods is in everyone’s best in-terest. If you see a bear, let the animal be and enjoy the sighting, but be sure to not offer it any food.”

Intentionally feeding bears can be dangerous, as it makes the bears com-fortable around people, Conlee said. It can also lead bears to cause significant damage to property while searching for a meal.

“When bears lose their fear of humans, they could approach people in search of food or may defend the food sources or territory they associ-ate with people, which can make them dangerous,” Conlee said.

“When this happens, the bear cannot be relocated and has to be destroyed,” she explained.

This is what MDC officials and experts mean when they promote the saying, “A fed bear is a dead bear,” she added.

Avoid bear encounters:Food is usually a bear’s main moti-

vator, but that also means it can be a main source of conflict. Conservation-department officials offer the follow-ing tips to avoid attracting black bears to possible food sources:

— Store garbage, recyclables and compost inside a secure building or in a bear-proof container until trash

pick-up day.— Keep grills and smokers clean and

store them inside.— Don’t leave pet food outside. Feed

pets a portion at each meal and remove the empty containers.

— Refrain from using bird feeders in bear country from April through November. If in use, hang them at least 10 feet high and 4 feet away from any

structure. Keep in mind that even if a bear cannot get to the birdseed, the scent could still attract it to the area.

— Use electric fencing to keep bears away from beehives, chicken coops, vegetable gardens, orchards and other potential food sources.

— Keep campsites clean, and store all food, toiletries and trash in a secure vehicle or strung high between two trees. Do not keep food or toiletries in a tent, and do not burn or bury garbage or food waste.

If you do encounter a bear:While black bears are generally a

shy, non-aggressive species and bear attacks are rare, MDC officials of-fer these tips when outdoors in bear country:

— Make noise, such as clapping, singing or talking loudly, while hiking to prevent surprising a bear.

— Travel in a group if possible.— Keep dogs leashed.— Be aware of the surroundings.

If there is evidence of a bear, such as tracks or scat, avoid the area.

— Leave bears alone. Do not ap-proach them, and make sure they have an escape route.

— Report bear sightings and post photos online at mdc.mo.gov/ reportbears.

For more information about Mis-souri black bears and how to “Be Bear Aware,” visit the MDC website mdc.mo.gov/bearaware. More information about the department’s Missouri Black Bear Project is available at research.mdc.mo.gov/project/missouri-black-bear-project.

Q: Are Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez going to get married anytime soon? I thought they would have been wed by now. -- F.L.

A: The superstar power couple are still engaged, but seem to be taking their time before making it official, which I believe is wise. In fact, JLo recently told Oprah Winfrey, “If we’re going to be together for the rest of our lives, what is the rush?” She also sounded very insight-ful about her past: “It’s so funny because when we first got engaged, I was like, ‘Oh, we’re going to get married in a couple of months. Like your old thinking comes right back, like all that hope-less romantic [feeling] that made me get married three times.”

***Q: I see way too many TV

scenes in dark rooms. The background and some of the foreground are so dark I can barely make out the actors. Why are the rooms always so dark? -- B.G.

A: My first thought was that maybe you’re watching television during the day and your screen is fac-ing a sunny window, but after doing some research, I found many complaints online about this issue long after the sun has gone down. “Game of Thrones” and “Walking Dead” fans have been the most vocal, angry that pivotal scenes were so dark they couldn’t make out some of the characters or what room/location they were in from take to take.

As television has gotten more cinematic, technology

doesn’t seem to be able to keep up. The contrast that would be easier to deci-

pher on a big movie screen doesn’t translate well to our living rooms. I did find a

very informative article in “Consumer Reports” about some adjustments you might be able to make to your TV set at www.consumer-reports.org/tvs/game-of-thrones-tv-settings-dark-episodes/. Good luck!

***Q: I really miss Sophia

Bush on “Chicago P.D.” I don’t think the show is the same without her. Is there a chance she’ll come back? -- E.M.

A: Bush chose to leave the hit NBC police drama in 2017 after the fourth season, but it wasn’t without warn-ing. She told listeners on the podcast “Refinery 29” that she sat down with “Chicago P.D.” producers before the fourth season and stated that she was giving them 23 epi-sodes’ notice that she would be leaving “if something re-ally drastic doesn’t change.”

Rumor has it that co-star Jason Beghe displayed some inappropriate behavior on the set, but Bush remained tightlipped about why she was exiting. She simply said she knew she “couldn’t do that job anymore.”

Even though a return to “Chicago P.D.” doesn’t seem likely, you might enjoy her next project, a CBS medical drama titled “Good Sam.” It’s still in the preproduction stages, and the rest of the cast hasn’t been announced, but I would bet it’ll be ready by the fall 2020 season.
