PASTORAL LETTER

Dear Friends,

We have celebrated the most important event in the christian year – Easter. It covers many types of behaviour and emotion. We have joy and welcome quickly changing to disappointment and distrust. Jesus suffers physical pain and humiliation. Why? He loves us so musch. The joy of this resurrection reminds us that Jesus is with us and that he keeps his promises. When visitinf people at home or in hospital I sometimes wonder what I will say. Jesus gives us the words we need. Ifin doubt about what course of action to take just ask ‘What would Jesus do?’ You will soon learn what you should do. Being your locum is a great privilige and joy, but there can be difficult days too. Those are the days when Jesus carries me through. When you are facing difficulties TRUST God.

blessings,

Katie.JOHN P BROWN

It is with sadness that we record the death, on 14th March, of John P Brown.

John was born on 9th April 1927 and served his country in the marines in the later 1940s. He greatly valued the friendships he established in the marines and for the remainder of his life he actively maintained his membership of the Royal Marines Association.

After leaving the marines he married his wife, Margaret, to whom he was utterly devoted until her death fourteen years ago, and they had three children. John was quite widely travelled, partly on foreign holidays but also when visiting his sister in Canada.

John attended church very regularly and spent part of his 73rd birthday in the Old Parish being ordained to the eldership. He was a very quiet yet warm and friendly man who diligently undertook his duties as an elder. For a number of years he was a member of our Church Officer rota and was totally dependable in carrying out his duties with great dignity.

We give thanks for John’s life and his service of God in Rutherglen Old Parish.

SCOTTISH BIBLE SOCIETY

The Mission of the Scottish Bible Society is to provide God’s word to all people in a format they can use, and at a price they can afford.Just one example of that is the new Gaelic version of The New Testament which is now available for Gaelic speakers. It began in 2010 with the Gospel of St John being translated, and the intervening years have seen the transcript of the whole of The New Testament.Another example is the celebration of 100 years of the Christian Union Version (CUV) Bible in China, with a special service taking place in Hongde Church in Shanghai. Elaine Duncan, Chief Executive of SBS was in attendance, and addressed those present. Since 1987, more than 80 MILLION COPIES of the CUV Bible have been distributed on Mainland China. Despite the situation in 1919, the CUV Bible was published in China, and this calls for thanksgiving for the past 100 years.Marjory GreigSBS Contact

WOMAN’S GUILD

Once again the second half of the woman’s guild session passed as quickly as the first. First of all, many thanks to everyone who supported our Spring Concert, enabling us to forward £636 to CA Headquarters. The concert was most enjoyable, with the music provided by some pupils from Stonelaw High School Bands and Choir.Christian Aid Week begins on Sunday 12th May, with a Church Service in Burnside Church at 6pm. In attendance will be Sally Foster-Fulton who is in charge of Christian Aid in Scotland, and we shall be happy to meet with her. We hope you will look kindly on anyone who may come to your door, collecting that week. All those people are volunteers giving of their time and energy to help others around the world, and we thank them for that. This year the emphasis is on helping Mums give birth to their babies in a safe place, with medical help available if required. Sierra Leone is the world’s most dangerous place to become a Mum, with TEN WOMEN DYING EVERY DAY from giving birth. Please remember them if you do get the opportunity to give to Christian Aid this May. Each and every donation is greatly appreciated by those in greatest need. We also have the ‘Wee Boxes’ available all year round which can take any loose change you may have.Wishing everyone a Very Happy Summer.

THOUGHTFUL THURSDAYS

The church is open to the public from noon till 2pm each Thursday for a quiet visit or meditation. We also serve tea, coffee and biscuits, but bring your own packed lunch!  This has become a very pleasant interlude for chat and company and any member of the congregation will be most welcome.

Elsa Muir.

INCUMBENTS’ BOARD

On Thursday, 14 March, we were delighted to welcome back to Thoughtful Thursday the Rev Calum MacLeod and his family. Around 30 Thoughtful Thursday regulars and a few guests were welcomed and had the privilege of seeing Mr MacLeod unveiling our Incumbents’ Board to which his name had been added and hearing his warm remarks. Following a most enjoyable light lunch the Rev Father Pat Hennessy of St Columbkille’s Church paid fitting tribute to Mr MacLeod and wished him well for the future. However, these formalities were concluded sufficiently promptly to allow adequate time for much informal convivial conversation.

WORLD MISSION NEWS

The World Mission Council engages with partners in Asia, Africa, the Americas, the Caribbean, Europe and the Middle East, and this year the theme has been ‘Living Together in a world of Religions’. We learn of Tabeetha School in Jaffa, Israel which is the only school owned by the Church of Scotland. It was named after the ‘woman of good works’ who lived in Joppa (today’s Jaffa) in Apostle Paul’s time. The school was originally set up by a Scottish woman, Jane Walker-Arnott in 1863, as a result of her seeing the plight of girls who were poor and uneducated. Not stopping to ask their religion or back ground, she opened the school and taught Scripture, lace making and English. Today, Tabeetha is a Day School for 330 students from 30 different countries, speaking and learning together in a common language – English. The English Curriculum is used throughout the school to A Level s. There are many successful former pupils around the world who give thanks for Tabeetha School whose motto is ‘Dream Big, Aim High, Achieve Success’, and the teachers see this working out each day at lessons. Our own Missionary Partner, Anne Davidson runs Mercy House in Makulu, helping disadvantaged children. Teaching them basic life skills, and keeping them safe and off the streets. Please pray for all those who give of themselves to improve the lives of others, particularly children, at home and abroad.

LONG SERVICE CERTIFICATE

On Sunday, 2 March 1969, James G Alexander was ordained to the eldership in our church. Since then Jim has faithfully served as a district elder and for over 20 years as our representative in Glasgow Presbytery. On 24 March our service was followed by our Stated Annual Meeting at which members of the congregation received our 2018 annual accounts so it was fitting that it was during the service on that date that our Locum, Katie Morrison, presented Jim with his long service certificate celebrating Jim’s 50 years as an elder since, for much of that time, he was also our Church Treasurer.

Currently Jim is a member of our Nominating Committee, our WFO and Gift Aid Convener, he has spearheaded the preparations for our forthcoming meeting with Glasgow Presbytery’s Local Church Review Committee and he quietly but faithfully ensures that our members’ donations are delivered to the local foodbank.

We are very grateful to Jim for his past dedicated service, for all he currently does for and within Rutherglen Old Parish and we thank him for his anticipated future valuable contribution to the life of our congregation.

Elsa Muir. The STATED ANNUAL MEETING of the Congregation of RUTHERGLEN OLD PARISH CHURCH was held on Sunday 24th March 2019, immediately following the morning service.

Miss Katie Morrison Locum presided and opened the Meeting with prayer.

The Notice calling the Meeting, which had been intimated on Sundays 10 th March and 17th

March 2019 and signed by Rev Alan Raeburn, Miss Katie Morrison Locum and the Clerk, was taken as read.

Minutes of the Stated Annual Meeting held on 18th March 2018, and printed in the May 2018 edition of the Church Newsletter were taken as read and on the motion of Mr J D Alexander and seconded by Mrs E Duncan were approved and signed.

The Treasurer’s Report

Irene Kay our Treasurer presented her report. She stated that the normal practise has been to issue a set of our official OSCR accounts, together with a single sheet summary, headed Treasurer's Report. Our budget for 2019 is on the other side of the Treasurer's Report. For the sake of simplicity she concentrated on the single sheet summary., highlighting that she was not trying to hide anything from anyone but, if she were to attempt to go through the official version, we would still be here at tea-time, and I doubted also that anyone would be any the wiser.

The single sheet is in the same format as the monthly income & expenditure report which is presented to the Congregational Board during the year. These figures relate to our General Fund, with a summary of the movement in our Fabric Fund at the bottom of the page. In the OSCR accounts, our Fabric income and expenditure is included in our General Fund under the heading, Unrestricted Funds. What is not included on the single sheet are the funds of the various church organisations, which come under the heading of Restricted Funds in the OSCR version.

The other main difference in the way the figures are presented in the two versions relates to donations from church organisations, specifically the Coffee Morning Committee and the Guild. On the single sheet, these are included with Donations, whereas in the OSCR version, they are treated as transfers of funds.

Our General Fund finished the year with a surplus of £6,092. This is obviously good news indeed - and all the more remarkable when you consider that, last year, we finished with a deficit of £3,570. This does not include Fabric income and expenditure.

A few point were highlighted as follows:

12

Page 12: Filename: ChLarge with Text€¦  · Web viewThe main quarterly celebration of the sacrament of communion will take place during our service on Sunday, 2 June. We also celebrate

Looking first of all at Income.

The amount given through Open Plate went down by £874, but WFO went up by £6,970, which is an amazing 16% increase. Add to this the increase of £765 in Gift Aid, resulting, of course, from the increase in Gift Aided WFO, and we can safely say that our Money Matters Campaign, held early in the year, bore fruit. As for the reduction in Open Plate, it is safe to assume that some of the offerings previously given there are now given in another way, either by WFO, or by Standing Order.

The treasurer took the opportunity to thank those who reviewed their offerings in the course of the year. We appreciate that, for many people, money is tight, particularly in the current financial climate, so it is all the more humbling that members have managed to increase their giving to our church to this extent. You will see that Donations have gone down considerably – a drop of £3,450. However, this is not as bad as it may seem. Last year's Donations included £1,700 from the Guild and £3,000 from the Coffee Morning Committee. This year's figure also includes a donation of £1,700 from the Guild. However, although the Coffee Morning Committee again gave a donation of £3,000 to church funds this year, it was agreed to divert that to our Fabric Fund which, which was sorely in need of income. Because of the increase in offerings this year, we were not dependent on the Coffee Morning Committee's donation's balancing the General Fund's books, as has often been the case in the past, so we were, fortunately, able to do this.

It should be noted that there is a considerable increase in income from the use of our premises by outside organisations – over £2,200, or 68%. This is not “easy money”. It involves time and effort by the Clerk to the Board, to negotiate terms and ensure that the terms and conditions of the hire are adhered to. If you know of any suitable group looking for premises, please point them in our direction. Apart from the income side of things, it does us no harm to be seen as a resource at the centre of our community.

To summarise, total Income, excluding Fabric, rose by £5,380, approximately 8%

Now to turn to Expenditure.

Total Expenditure fell by £4,060.

There are no significant differences under the first three headings – Ministries & Mission, Presbytery Dues and Local Staffing. However, it is worth pointing out that, were we to have a full time minister, our expenditure under Local Staffing would be significantly higher, given that we would be responsible for car, mileage and phone expenses, which we are not currently paying. It is estimated that this would add in excess of £2000 to our costs.

There is a slight increase £646 under day-to-day Repairs & Maintenance, but a considerable decrease in our Heating & Lighting costs. Last year's figure did include a one-off back payment in relation to the heating of the Manse while it was unoccupied, but that does not account for such a significant reduction (£2,374). Anyone who has been in church during the last month or so will be aware that we are certainly not stinting on our heating. The assumption being that we have benefitted from a much milder winter this year.

Other Building Costs have also gone down – by £1,125. This heading covers insurance for

13

Page 13: Filename: ChLarge with Text€¦  · Web viewThe main quarterly celebration of the sacrament of communion will take place during our service on Sunday, 2 June. We also celebrate

the church and the manse, and also Council Tax on the Manse. However, as the Manse is unoccupied, we are once again exempt from paying Council Tax, hence the reduction in costs.

Other Costs have also decreased, this time by over £1,500. However, last year's figure included a couple of one-off payments, one of which was the removal expenses of Mr MacLeod when he first arrived. This then accounts for that reduction.

With total expenditure of £65,612, and total income of £71,704, excluding Fabric, we have finished the year with a surplus of £6,092, as compared with last year's deficit of £3,570

A few words on Fabric Fund.

You will have been aware that, over the last few years, a lot of work has been done, and money spent, on upgrading and general maintenance both here in the church and at the manse. This work ate well and truly into our Fabric Fund - indeed, at one point in the year, it had “gone into the red”. We have, however, managed to end the year with a balance of just over £3,000. This is due, entirely, to some very generous donations. There were several small donations of up to £100 to the Fabric Fund throughout the year, as well as an anonymous donation from a member of the congregation of £2,000; the Carpet Bowlers generously donated £350; and Thoughtful Thursday donated a remarkable £1,100 in the course of the year. We also received a Legacy of £1,000 which we put to the Fabric Fund and, as mentioned earlier, the Coffee Morning donated £3,000 to Fabric. A total of £7,660, of which more than half has already been spent.

There can be no doubt that our buildings are in very good condition. However, if we are to continue to maintain the high standards we have set, we are going to have to think seriously about how we finance that.

To finish, we can be pleased that we have turned our finances around from last year, but we must beware of being complacent. However, the treasurer highlighted as she has done in the past that set against the uncertainty we in the Old Parish have been dealing with now for more years than she cared to mention. She believes that it is quite remarkable that, with the exception of the blip last year, we have managed to sustain our income at a level that covers our day to day expenses. She doubted that many other congregations, in similar circumstances, would have achieved that.

The congregation was given the opportunity to ask any questions. There being no questions Irene was thanked for her complex report which was accepted by the members present without question.

Appointment of Office Bearers

Board for another period of three years. Miss Elizabeth Cunningham will serve for another one year. Mrs Sheena Tait has retired due to ill health.

There remains seven vacancies on the Board to bring us to the full compliment. These can be for 1, 2 or 3 year period. The Board were given permission to co-opt members during the year.

Vote of ThanksAs is customary at the end of the Stated Annual Meeting, a Vote of Thanks is proposed this was undertaken by Mr Hugh Millar our Session Clerk.

Mr Millar opened by saying it is always a pleasure to have the opportunity to thank the many people who contribute to the life of Rutherglen Old Parish Church.

He went on to say that last May we said farewell to our Minister, the Rev Calum MacLeod, whose 11-month ministry here was cut short by very serious ill-health. We were very glad that he was able to return to Rutherglen Old on 14 th March for the unveiling of our Incumbents’ Board to which his name had been added.

On his retiral Glasgow Presbytery blessed us greatly by appointing the Rev Jeanne Roddick as our new Interim Moderator and we have been working closely with her and having the benefit of her advice and support in our Board, Session and Nominating Committee as we actively seek our next minister.

Thanks was expressed to the Clerk to the Congregational Board and our Church Treasurer, highlighting that we only get a hint of the demanding job undertaken by Irene Kay our Treasurer. She was thanked for all her time, commitment and efficiency behind the scenes and her very clear report, not to mention her regular stints as banker. Thanks also to Jim Alexander for his administration of the WFO scheme and as Gift Aid Convener. Our Church finances are very important and we are most appreciative of the efforts of our bankers, collectors and counters.

As always our Fabric Committee has been busy in maintaining the fabric of both the Church and the Manse so our thanks go to Margaret Robinson and Kirsteen Dunn for all their time and effort in arranging and meeting with numerous tradesmen and for tackling the increasing volume of paperwork associated with fabric matters. It is appropriate to thank all members of the Congregational Board for their oversight of the fabric and finances of the congregation, especially those currently involved in the manse weekly inspection rota.On a Sunday morning we have our service and it is right that, at the service, we should remember that we are here to worship God. But perhaps we can be forgiven for taking a moment today to remember and thank those who ensure that the Church heating is on and our Church Officers who open up the church, attend to administrative matters and close up afterwards. We thank our organist, Gordon, and the members of our choir.

We appreciate the work done by our Crèche and Sunday School leaders and we are very grateful to those who provide refreshments after the service. Every Sunday the Church is brightened up by floral displays and we thank those who donate, arrange and distribute the flowers Sunday by Sunday. He then thanked the leaders of the various organisations who

meet weekly throughout the year along with those involved in the life of the congregation who do not fall into any of the above categories.

Last November the congregation elected our Nominating Committee and, while the work of that Committee has to be kept strictly confidential, I can assure you that the members of that Committee have been working extremely hard in seeking an appropriate person to be our next minister.

Finally and most importantly for any congregation in a time of vacancy there is a tendency for things to drift. This has not happened in the Old Parish for one very simple reason – we have been greatly blessed to have Katie as our Locum. Her leading of our worship through her conduct of our services has been of consistently exemplary standard on Sundays, and in our monthly services of prayers for healing. Katie is an excellent preacher and pastor. We know this and we thank Katie for it.

It is often said that behind every successful woman there is a successful man, so it is appropriate to thank Mr Raeburn who, although no longer our Locum, continues to support us in his very regular conduct of services at which we celebrate communion and when he assists Katie at our monthly services of prayers for healing.Mr Millar asked everyone to join him in thanking everyone in the normal manner

Prior to Katie closing the meeting she expressed her thanks to Mr Millar for his support and intimated that Rutherglen Old was very fortunate to have such a dedicated and talented Session Clerk. There was a further hearty applause.

This being all the business, the meeting was then closed with prayer
