Files and Rasps

• What is a File?– A tool with a roughened surface used for smoothing

or shaping a hard material. • There are 4 categories of files. • How many of these categories do you know?– Flat file – Round file – Half round file– Triangle file

Flat File

• Can be large and used to take a lot of material off at once

• Also can be as fine as a finger nail file and used for detail work.

Round File

• There are not that many kinds of round files.

• There are several different sizes of round files though.

Half Round File

• Can have one round edge and a flat edge or two round edges.

Triangle File

• Taper• Slim taper • Extra Slim taper• Regular taper

What are some things that we use these files for?

• Flat file– Metal work• Gunsmith• Fabrication

– Wood working• Furniture maker• Bowyer

– Horse shoeing• Farrier• Rancher

• Round file– Metal work • Sharpening chainsaws • Filing in small or hard to

reach places such as the inside of a pipe

– Wood work • Cutting small round

grooves for finish work

• Half round file– Metal • One of the best

uses for this is to clean the burs out of the inside of larger diameter pipe.

– Wood working• Great for making a

concave surface on wood products

detailed work and for making square corners.

Using the file

• The teeth on a file all point away from the handle.

• Because of this, you should always push a file and never drag it.

• Safety wear– Safety glasses• to protect your eyes safe from debris

– Gloves• to keep your hands protected
