Bayanihan is a Filipino term derived from the word “Bayan” which means “Nation”. It refers to the spirit of cooperation, communal unity, and teamwork to achieve a common goal (ref. https://themixedculture.com )

The Bayanihan spirit was especially alive and well this year when our community has experienced the sickness and death of several esteemed members. Through these dicult times, our community was visible in their presence, in support through their prayers for those aicted and for their families. During the 9-day novenas, the 40th day celebrations of the deceased assent to heaven, the spirit of our compassion and shared grief had promoted a sense of unity, belonging and strength among the Filipinos in the community. I have witnessed their tireless compassion, their willingness to walk the extra mile to help the bereaved families; their continued prayers of support and their Christian faith that binds us all. Yes, this is the Bayanihan spirit!

Not only were we together in grief, but also through times of joy. This was demonstrated by the many collabo-rative eorts of various Filipino organizations to continue support the annual “Mothers’ Day Celebration” in

recognition of the vital role of our mother in our life. Additionally, we again, joined together to present to the greater Cincinnati community our most popular Filipino Cultural Festival “Flores de Mayo, Santa Cruzon” which showcased our rich ethnic culture. The various Filipino organizations including APPGC, BLD/OSG, CFCFFL, FASO, Northern Kentucky FILAM

Society, PNACinNKy and U-FAMS all came together for the celebration of “Pista Sa Nayon 2017”. This event provided a platform for our Filipinas to be “Reynas” and our youth to be “Princesses” and “Consorts”. These events

have increased the recognition of Filipino culture in the greater Cincinnati area.

We have shown that we are stronger together and that we can work as one while we continue to support our individual missions and maintain our own organiza-tion’s uniqueness. Let us go forward together in the spirit of Bayanihan!

We have shown that we are stronger together and that we can work as

one while we continue to support our individual missions and maintain

our own organization’s uniqueness.

In February 2017, FASO lost a vital member of both our Executive Board and the Filipino Community. Ninfa Guinigundo was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She has left a legacy of love and caring. She had initiated FASO’s “Simbang Gabi”, and the parol making events. She was a very active member of the “Kimonas” – FASO’s adult dance group. Ninfa loved to dance and was quite passionate in her support of our Filipino American Cultural Performing Arts. She, together with her husband Bill, started the FASO’s “Damayan Fund”, a benevolent fund providing urgent emergency funds for Filipino Americans in dire need.

“Generous”, “Kind”, “Humble”, “Joyful” and “Trustworthy” are just a few of the adjectives that friends would associate with Ninfa. She was these and more. Even after her life, she has left a legacy of caring by designat-ing FASO’s Damayan Fund as the recipient of any memorial oerings in her name.

In gratitude and in recognition of her loving generosity, the FASO Board voted to rename the Damayan Fund to be the “Ninfa Guinigundo Damayan Fund”. Thank you, Ninfa.

Ninfa, your passing has left a big hole in our hearts however your memory will live long within FASO and our Filipino community. We’re going to miss your vitality, your ready smile, your hospitality, your wonderful cooking, your laughter, your presence in our meetings and dance practices, we’re going to miss your friendship.

WE’LL MISS YOU.

By E.A. Piocos, Ph.D.In the rst installment, the discovery of the oldest remains in southeast Asia of a modern human being in Cagayan Valley, Philippines (Callao Man), along with the remains of Tabon Cave Man rmly establish that the Philippines was peopled during early human existence. In this installment, we cover the period starting from the time when the oldest human writing begun in Sumeria (about 4,000 years ago) to the time when Jesus Christ was born (about 2,000 years ago, or what is now called the beginning of the Common Era, CE).

Little is known about our pre-colonial history because the Spanish conquer-ors (starting in the year 1561) committed what is now known as “CULTURAL GENOCIDE”, the systematic destruction of traditions, artifacts, values, language, and other elements which made us distinct. The Spanish conquest also begun making us feel inferior... but I am getting ahead of myself - that is for the next few series yet! But, here I recast a known saying, sleeping dogs NEVER lay. Landmark structures will remain where they are, skulls and bones of our dead people in fancy vessels show up in places where current population begin to farm and develop. And our indigenous people (who were barely colonized) are vestiges of our pre- colonial past.

Let’s begin with the oldest landmark structure that has been dated to be about 4,000 years old: the Batanes Castle or more simply, the Idjang (see higher gure above). These are “triangular-shaped hills [4 of them] in Savidug, which is a municipality in Sabtang, Batanes” where the Ivatan people still live. (Ivatans are one of Philippines’ ethno-linguistic group.)

What is remarkable about these structures is its uncanny similarity to those found in nearby Japan (Ryukyu Island) which they call “Gusuku” (lower gure above). Builders of these structures werestrategic in their choice of where and how they were built. The similarities strongly point to an interaction among our ancestors and their neighbors. Anthropologists believe that the Ivatans likely used these structures as fortresses in times of war.

Another landmark structure that every Filipino knows which was traced to be built 2,000 years after the Idjangs is the Banaue Rice Terraces of the Ifugaos in the Mountain Province of northern Philippines. These are considered to be the OLDEST rice terraces in the world. The fact that Ifugaos, one of Philippines’ indigenous peoples, still to this day use the same technology to plant rice in these man- made structure provides irrevocable clue of how smart and ingenious our ancestors were! The nal highlight for me in this period are the various burial grounds and containers (see gures below) where the remains of their dead were stored by our ancestors. Why do you say this is a big deal? One, what can you say about a population that carefully and lavishly make vessels for the remains of their dead? Animals leave their dead behind to be eaten by scavengers. But, our ancestors were intelligent human beings who respect and honor their loved ones when they die. Two, the fact that they can make this highly crafted vessels showed they had the resources, technology and high level of craftsmanship to make them. Aren’t you proud to be a Filipino?
