FILM DOCK is a new film society for Weymouth and Portland, set up by local filmaholics, funded by Weymouth College, and sponsored by Revolting Graphic Design. If you are tired of insidious remakes and futile action flicks, and crave some inspiration from the big screen,
join us for screenings of independent / art house / foreign language / just plain interesting films this autumn.

Dir. Julian SchnabelStarring Mathieu Amalric, Emmanuelle SeignerBased on the memoir Le Scaphandre et le Papillon, by former Elle editor Jean-Dominique Bauby. After a massive stroke left him almost completely paralysed, Bauby amazingly managed to write a book using just one eye. The film, nominated for four Oscars, depicts Bauby’s fascinating life before and after the stroke.

Dir. Dziga VertovSilent film, with a specially commissioned score by Michael NymanMan with a Movie Camera is an exceptional film. A montage of urban Russian life in the late 1920s, it shows people at work and play, and the machines that drive the city. Techniques such as dissolves, split-screen and freeze-frame are used by Vertov to create an intellectually brilliant work.

Dir. Vincent Paronnaud, Marjane SatrapiAn animation based on Marjane Satrapi’s autobiographical graphic novel. The story follows a nine-year-old Iranian girl coming of age against the backdrop of the Iranian Revolution. As Islamic fundamentalists take power, Marjane discovers Abba and punk before eventually moving to Europe. Persepolis won the Jury Prize at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.

Weber traces Baker’s life from the 50s, when he was playing with jazz greats like Charlie Parker, to the 80s, when he had become a skid row junkie unable to get a decent gig.

As is typical of Anderson’s work, the film centres around family disputes and features the director’s signature motifs, eg. timeless fashions and props, and amusing stinted dialogue.
