PART OF OUR ESSENTIAL CINEMA SERIESSee classic art lms the way they were meant to be seen - with an audience, on the big screen!

“Wild, weird and unforgettable, Branded to Kill is one of those lms that feels so far ahead of its time, we may still not have caught up to it.”– Tom Huddleston, Time Out

A delirious fever dream of a lm noir, Seijun Suzuki’s fractured thriller Branded to Kill is an anarchic send-up of B-movie clichés that transforms a standard crime drama into something outrageously bizarre and unexpectedly poetic. e ecstatically bent story centers on Hanada, a.k.a. “No. 3 Killer,” the third-best hit man in Japanese organized crime, who also struggles with his sensual fetish for sning steamed rice. Near the top of his game, his fortunes change for the worse when he encounters Misako, a mysterious, death-obsessed woman who brings him a particularly dicult mission.  In an oddball moment indicative of the lm’s eccentric sensibility, a buttery lands on his gun at the exact moment he pulls the trigger, causing him to miss the shot. is failure to eliminate his intended victim means that the killer becomes the target, and Hanada soon nds himself running for his life from his former employers, as well as from the mysterious “No. 1 Killer.”  Equal parts riveting suspense thriller and surrealistic, psychosexual nightmare, Japanese New Wave bad boy Suzuki’s most infamous lm (which led to his ring from the Nikkatsu studio and the near destruction of his career, thanks to the meddling of abbergasted studio executives) is propelled by striking black-and-white cinematography, wild set design and avant-garde editing that provides the lm with a dream logic all its own. Poorly received upon its initial release, and today considered a maverick classic and a major inuence on such lmmakers as Quentin Tarantino, Jim Jarmusch, Park Chan-wook and John Woo, Branded to Kill is a gloriously o-kilter 1960s pop-art masterpiece that is by turns brutal, hilarious and visually intoxicating. (Dir. by Seijun Suzuki, 1967, Japan, in Japanese with subtitles, 91 mins., Not Rated)

$200 MONTHLY GRAND PRIZE!$1,000 YEARLY GRAND PRIZE!

On the rst Friday of each month at 9:00pm,  Red Meat’s  Max Cannon hosts the biggest, baddest short lm contest in town – just bring us your short lms and we’ll play them on the largest movie screen in Southern Arizona!

In case you’ve never been to a First Friday Shorts show, here are the rules: We’ll play anything you’ve made that’s under 15 minutes long and is brought to us on a DVD, thumb drive or BLU-ray (one lm per person, and DVDs must be playable on a regular DVD player and lms on drives need to be in by 8:00pm). Submissions are only taken on the day of the event, and all entries MUST BE RECEIVED PRIOR TO THE START OF THE ACTUAL SHOW (we cannot accept lms after the show has begun, or during intermission). All lms are played in the order they’re received. Every lm is guaranteed to play for 3 minutes, but after that the audience can call for the dreaded “gong” if they’re displeased. If the gong is struck, our intrepid host stops the lm and the next movie begins. But don’t despair … if your lm is gonged, you can re-work it and bring it back to see if the changes you’ve made have pleased the audience. is is a great way for lmmakers to try out new ideas and see how an actual audience responds, so take advantage. You cannot submit the same lm more than once unless it has been re-worked. Remember, the audience decides the winner each and every month, so keep them happy! PLEASE NOTE: We only take the rst 15 lms that are brought in each month and the spots have been lling up really fast. We start taking submissions as soon as we open the day of the show so get your lms in early! PLEASE BE ADVISED: Since we don’t pre-screen First Friday Shorts entries, we don’t know what each month’s “lm content” rating will be. Be advised that some material may not be suitable for all audiences.

Congrats to Cody Hunt who won March’s First Friday Shorts with his short Inated Emotions.

PART OF OUR ONE HIT WONDERS SERIESGreat new documentaries at special one-night-only screenings!

“An always colorful portrait of the cult group.” – John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter

In their 40-year career, the members of the pioneering music and multimedia collective known as e Residents have insisted on absolute anonymity, appearing in distinctive costumes (most notably, giant eyeball masks and natty suits) in extravagant live musical performances and lmed projects, and never revealing their true identities. Director Don Hardy’s entertaining and accessible new documentary, eory of Obscurity, tells the colorful, stranger-than-ction story of the group’s beginnings in rural North Louisiana, their artistic awakening in late-‘60s San Francisco, and their journey to the present day, where they’re still going strong. roughout, longtime collaborators and ardent supporters, including Les Claypool of Primus, Jerry Harrison of e Talking Heads, magician Penn Jillette,  e Simpsons’  creator Matt Groening, and members of Neurosis, Henry Cow and Ween – and maybe even the band members themselves – reveal the history, cult popularity and wild creativity of the eccentric group, set against the spectacle of their international anniversary tour.   Along the way, the lm illuminates the ethos and inuence of a band whose perseverance and originality have begun to attract a whole new generation of fans.  (Dir. by Don Hardy Jr., 2015, USA/Austria/Germany/Netherlands, 87 mins., Not Rated)

“An exhilarating moviegoing experience, lled with wickedly dark humor, nomination-worthy performances and a jigsaw puzzle plot that keeps us guessing until the bloody, brilliant end.” – Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times

Presented in glorious Ultra Panavision 70mm, and propelled by Ennio Morricone’s Oscar-winning score, the Roadshow Edition of  e Hateful Eight  is a truly unforgettable cinematic experience, featuring an overture, an intermission and extra footage not seen in the theatrical digital version. In writer/director Quentin Tarantino’s  brutal and breathtaking western thriller  e Hateful Eight,  set some years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape.Bounty hunter John Ruth (Kurt Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Oscar-nominee Jennifer Jason Leigh) race towards the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in these parts as “e Hangman,” will bring Domergue to justice. Along the road, they encounter Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson), a former union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins), a southern renegade who claims to be the town’s new Sheri. Losing their lead on the blizzard, all four seek refuge at Minnie’s Haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover. When they arrive, they are greeted by four unfamiliar faces: Bob (Demian Bichir), who’s taking care of Minnie’s in the owner’s absence; Oswaldo (Tim Roth), the hangman of Red Rock; cow-puncher Joe (Michael Madsen); and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Bruce Dern). As the storm overtakes the mountainside, our eight travelers come to learn they may not make it to Red Rock after all…  (Dir. by Quentin Tarantino, 2015, USA, 187 mins., Rated R)

e “Schwartz” will denitely be with you in this epic, uproarious space spoof to end all space spoofs, written and directed by the one-and-only Mel Brooks! In Spaceballs, everything from Star Wars (natch) to Alien, 2001 to Planet of the Apes gets ruthlessly skewered when the evil Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) attempts to steal all the air from planet Druidia, and the spunky Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga), her loyal robot companion Dot Matrix (voiced by Joan Rivers), the dashing Lone Star (Bill Pullman), and his faithful partner Barf (John Candy) – a half-man/half-dog creature who’s his own best friend – set out to stop him! FEATURING A POST-FILM PANEL DISCUSSION ON THE CONSERVATION OF ARIZONA’S MIGRATORY BIRDS WITH LOCAL EXPERTS FROM TUCSON AUDUBON SOCIETY, SOUTHERN SIERRA RESEARCH, RAIN CROW COFFEE AND UA FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE.

Often heard before seen, songbirds are instrumental in Mother Nature’s soundtrack. From Canada’s boreal forest, to Turkey’s wetlands, to New York’s night skies, the migration patterns of these birds are vital links in the global ecosystem. Current technological advances allow scientists to track individual birds’ journeys, providing detailed information on where and when they travel. e data is alarming, and the causes of the songbirds’ plummeting population are numerous and devastating. Pesticides, monoculture, the wholesale destruction of forests, predators and city lights are killing them o at massive rates, while climate change is happening too rapidly for them to adjust. e peril of avian species is a literal canary in the coal mine for humans, if we’re willing to listen and take action before they’re silenced. e elegance of these colorful creatures is captured in stunning slow-motion ight as ecologists, enthusiasts and everyday people work to protect them and petition for change. “Every man should pull a boat over a mountain once in his life.” – Werner HerzogThe films of director Werner Herzog are a mesmerizing combination of spiritual rebellion and cosmic slapstick –  Every Man for Himself and God Against All, as one title put it. Notorious for his own acts of Ahab-like defiance – dragging a ship across a mountain for  Fitzcarraldo, hypnotizing the cast of Heart of Glass  — Herzog has written and produced nearly all his own films, defying not only nature,  but (just as impressively) the movie industry as well.  A risk-taker who would do anything to produce the desired effect  (in

pursuit of what he has termed “Ecstatic Truth”), Herzog has made the filming process a challenging, sometimes downright dangerous adventure for his actors (most notably his volatile cinematic doppelganger, Klaus Kinski) as he pushed them to internalize their roles to the fullest.  Avoiding any conventional career path, Herzog emerged with R.W. Fassbinder and Wim Wenders at the forefront of the New German Cinema movement in the 1970s. Alternating between epic historical dramas, oddball character studies, and brilliantly unnerving documentaries, Herzog has produced a body of images unmatched for their audacity, surreal beauty and flair for the grotesque.  Through it all, he has remained a filmmaker who embraces life at its most apocalyptic extremes.  This April, The Loft Cinema celebrates the boundary-pushing auteur, Werner Herzog, with four of his most unforgettable narrative features on the big screen!

Page 17: FILM GUIDE - The Loft Cinema · 2019-03-25 · the hateful eight 70mm roadshow edition! remember (see page 25) friday, april 8 at 7:30pm free members screening april 2016 special

Herzog’s fascination with strange characters adrift in strange environments takes a turn toward the humorously absurd in this comically deadpan, decidedly oddball road trip adventure. Like most of Herzog’s films,  Stroszek  abounds in haunting images, brilliantly evocative metaphors and eruptions of sardonic wit, including what could easily be considered the best performance by a dancing chicken in the history of cinema. (Dir. by Werner Herzog, 1977, Germany, in German/English/Turkish with subtitles, 115 mins., Not Rated)

One of cinema’s grandest and most jaw-dropping epic adventures, Herzog’s stunning tale of obsession, madness and opera houses blurs the lines between fiction and reality to unleash a spectacle unlike any other. With  Fitzcarraldo, Herzog (who was awarded the Best Director award at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival), managed not only to create a truly memorable cinematic experience, but also to cement his reputation as an unmatchable (and often outlandish) visionary.  (Dir. by Werner Herzog, 1982, Germany, in German with subtitles, 158 mins., Rated PG)

Herzog’s long-term fascination with misfits living outside the boundaries of “normal” society achieved full flower with this strange, haunting and uniquely moving drama inspired by a true story. Built around a hypnotic central performance by the late Bruno S., a street performer who had spent much of his life in a mental institution, The Enigma of Kaspar Huaser is no ordinary bio-pic, but an unforgettable, dreamlike meditation on the nature of civilization and the fine line between sanity and madness.  (Dir. by Werner Herzog, 1974, Germany, in German with subtitles, 110 mins., Not Rated)

THE ENIGMA OF KASPAR HAUSERWEDNESDAY, APRIL 20 AT 7:30PM

Once seen, never forgotten, this hallucinatory epic of unhinged Spanish conquistadors lost in the Amazon is the definitive Werner Herzog expedition to the edge. A classic example of art imitating life, the insanity of the journey depicted in the film was mirrored in the borderline sanity of filmmaker and scantily resourced crew making a film in the same jungle location. As the untested rafts drift and hurtle down the mighty river, it’s clear that the extreme dangers and discomfits depicted are not being faked. Legend has it that the psychic warfare on screen was just as real: Herzog and Kinski each threatened to kill the other before filming reached its conclusion with the staggering final scene.  (Dir. by Werner Herzog, 1972, Germany, in German/Quechua/Spanish with subtitles, 93 mins., Not Rated)

DON’T MISS LEGENDARY PERFORMANCE GROUP NEGATIVLAND’S FIRST-EVER SHOW IN TUCSON! FEATURING SPECIAL LOCAL GUESTS, SKINCAGE!

“Negativland isn’t just some group of merry pranksters; its art is about tearing apart and reassembling found images, objects and sounds to create new ones, in an attempt to make social, political and artistic statements. Hilarious and chilling.” - Onion

For the rst time in 34 years of presenting unique one-of-a-kind stage shows, Negativland performs radically new audio-visual versions of many Negativland fan-favorites that have never before been heard live. Negativland’s current performance projects nds them teaming up with electronic musician Wobbly, and Tucson-based “live cinema” video artist Steev Hise, to create a visually and sonically unique performance that reinvents favorite past and present dialog cut-ups, while showcasing Negativland’s homemade electronic noise-making devices that they call “Boopers.” Boopers, in case you were wondering, are intentionally unstable homemade analog feedback boxes, rst created in 1975 by David Wills, a founding member of Negativland. By taking a simple clock radio amplier and sending its output back into its input to create feedback, and then adding multiple transistors, capacitors, and resistors, along with various knobs and switches to unpredictably control and modulate the signal, the sound that emerges is wildly variable. is creates a dynamic where the Negtivland member playing the Booper becomes a fellow collaborator with the device. Using as many seven Boopers on stage at once (all based on Wills’ original design), Negativland further structures, manipulates and augments these sounds with found voices, cut-up spoken word, ungainly pulsing rhythms and live collaged visuals.

“An intimate and unnerving character study that marks a ferociously impressive feature debut from 26-year-old Trey Edward Shults.” – Justin Chang, Variety

“An extraordinary debut feature. Krisha Fairchild’s lead performance starts o riveting and grows ever more compelling as the brilliantly o-center story unwinds.” – Sheri Linden, Hollywood Reporter

Gripping from start to nish, Trey Edward Shults’ award-winning debut feature plunges viewers deep into the disoriented world of its title character, Krisha, a troubled woman who begins to unravel while trying to reconnect with her family. e 60-something Krisha arrives unannounced at her long-estranged Texas family’s anksgiving celebration, looking for atonement. It’s been ten years since Krisha has seen her family, thanks to a laundry list of problems, but she’s now hoping to turn over a new leaf. As the house begins to ll with more family members, all of whom have issues with Krisha, conversations become forced and awkward, and Krisha’s mood drops from condent to combative in a matter of hours. “You are heartbreak incarnate,” proclaims one of her in-laws, and we begin to see why, as her visit, which begins with forced good cheer, descends into chaos. Casting his own family members in lead roles and shooting the entire lm at his parents’ home, writer/director Shults capitalizes upon his personal experiences to create a tense and emotionally thrilling drama, which won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the 2015 SXSW Film Festival. As the title character, Krisha Fairchild (the director’s real-life aunt) imbues her role with a dizzying whirlwind of emotional highs and lows, delivering an astonishing performance reminiscent of Gena Rowlands in the Cassavetes’ classic, A Woman Under the Inuence. (Dir. by Trey Edward Shults, 2015, USA, 83 mins., Rated R)

“A funny and sweet gem… national treasure Sally Field plays ‘Doris’ to endearing perfection.” – Eric D. Snider, Vanity Fair

Hello,  My Name Is Doris, starring two-time Oscar winner Sally Field,  is a witty and compassionate late-life coming-of-age-comedy which proves that it’s never too late to grow up. When Doris (Sally Field) meets her company’s hip new art director John (Max Greeneld, “New Girl”), sparks y—at least for Doris. Her rst encounter with true romance (outside of the pages of a novel) convinces Doris that she and the mostly unaware John are meant for each other. In the cluttered house she shared with her late mother, Doris mines the internet for information on her one-and-only, guided by the 13-year-old granddaughter of her best pal Roz (Tyne Daly, “Judging Amy”). When Doris begins showing up at John’s regular haunts, she wins over his Williamsburg friends with her eclectic vintage wardrobe, quirky naiveté and un-ironic enthusiasm for their rooftop knitting circle. Her new life brings Doris a thrilling perspective, but also creates a rift between her and her longtime friends and family, who believe she’s making a fool of herself over a guy half her age.  (Dir. by Michael Showalter, 2015, USA, 95 mins., Rated R)

Marguerite is kept in the dark about her cringingly awful performances and extreme vocal deciencies by her long-suering husband (André Marcon, Tour de Force), a butler with his own artistic aspirations (Denis Mpunga, Dead Man Talking), and her nancially-needy singing coach, who spouts such self-serving slogans as “sublimity and the ridiculous are never far apart.” However, Marguerite’s delusions of grandeur reach a tipping point when she receives an unexpected rave review from a young journalist with suspicious intentions, inspiring her to follow her dreams and plan her rst public recital for an audience of strangers. As the big night approaches and the web of deceit and delusion grows to mammoth proportions, can the charade possibly continue? Loosely inspired by the real life story of Florence Foster Jenkins, Marguerite is a delectably sharp and mischievous satire of class pretentions and artistic aspirations, propelled by an unforgettable performance by Catherine Frot as our dangerously deluded heroine. “If there’s a better lm this year, get ready for a very good year.” – Mick La Salle, San Francisco Chronicle

Terrence Malick’s visually dazzling, philosophically daring  Knight of Cups  follows writer Rick (Christian Bale) on an odyssey through the playgrounds of Los Angeles and Las Vegas as he undertakes a search for love and self. Even as he moves through a desire-laden landscape of mansions, resorts, beaches and clubs, Rick grapples over complicated relationships with his brother (Wes Bentley) and father (Brian Dennehy). His quest to break the spell of his disenchantment takes him on a series of adventures with six alluring women: rebellious Della (Imogen Poots); his physician ex-wife (Cate Blanchett); a serene model (Freida Pinto); a woman he wronged in the past (Natalie Portman); a spirited, playful stripper (Teresa Palmer); and innocent Isabel (Isabel Lucas), who helps him see a way forward. e seventh lm from celebrated writer/director Malick (Days of Heaven, e Tree of Life), Knight of Cups (the title refers to the Tarot card depicting a romantic adventurer guided by his emotions) oers both a vision of modern life and an intensely personal experience of memory, family and love. (Dir. by Terrence Malik, 2016, USA, 118 mins., Rated R)

“An impressionistic and entertaining snapshot that captures the spirit of Miles Davis’ life and career.” – Matthew Turner, List

“Unpredictable and constantly intriguing, Miles Ahead plays more like one of Davis’ compositions than a traditional biopic… with a brilliant central performance.” – Eric Kohn, Playlist

Inspired by events in the life of Miles Davis, this is a wildly entertaining, impressionistic, no-holds barred portrait of one of 20th century music’s creative geniuses. In the midst of a dazzling and prolic career at the forefront of modern jazz innovation, Miles Davis (played by director and co-writer Don Cheadle) virtually disappears from public view for a period of ve years in the late 1970s. Alone and holed up in his home, he is beset by chronic pain from a deteriorating hip, his musical voice stied and numbed by drugs and pain medications, his mind haunted by unsettling ghosts from the past. A wily music reporter, Dave Braden (Ewan McGregor), forces his way into Davis’ house and, over the next few days, the two men unwittingly embark on a wild and sometimes harrowing adventure to recover a stolen tape of the musician’s latest composition. Plagued by years of regret and loss, Davis irts with annihilation until he once again nds salvation in his art. With  Miles Ahead, working from a script he co-wrote with Steven Baigelman, Academy Award-nominated actor Don Cheadle makes his bravura directorial debut.
