Background

The filtration & retention characteristic investigation of nicotine, phenolic

componds, B[a]P, HCN, ammonia, carbonyl compounds in filters

The filtration efficiencies of different smoke components vary to a large

extent, and their retention distribution patterns are also varied.

The retention distribution pattern diversity of different components show the

high complexity of cigarette smoke filtration in cigarette filter.

Experimental Retention crotonaldehyde concentration distribution at longitudinal direction and

longitudinal cross-section.

The concentration distribution data were then fitted using a cubic smoothing spline

Crotonaldehyde shows a special retention distribution

pattern in filters, which is completely different from

other smoke components. WHY?

It is hypothesized that the smoke flow during puffing causes

crotonaldehyde desorption retained in the filter, and an

adsorption-desorption-adsorption occurs in the filter during the

smoking process.

Conclusion

2. There are significant differences between crotonaldehyde

and other smoke components such as nicotine and phenols,

in their retention distribution patterns. Different filter structures

also have notable influence on crotonaldehyde retention

distribution.

Conclusion

3. Real-time puff-by-puff smoke temperature data indicates the

smoke flow during puffing causes desorption of crotonaldehyde

retained in the filter, an adsorption-desorption-adsorption

occurs in the filter during the smoking process. This desorption

effect mainly happened during the last two puffs at higher smoke

temperature.
