General success factors for increased transport of biomass on inland waterways:

Reliable waterway infrastructure (fairway depth) Efficient infra- and superstructure in the Danube ports (transshipment

facilities, storage capacities) Time-efficient & flexible administrative processes (EU/national

regulation) Flexible and reliable logistics concepts integrating Danube logistics

services Innovation-driven and user/customer-oriented inland waterways/ shipping systems

Specific success factors for increased transport of biomass on inland waterways:

Certification along the entire chain needed - from grain producer to bioethanol producer Proximity to production sites or cost efficient options to bridge

distances planning company settlement (incl. logistics aspect) Miscanthus cultivation in areas with high water level, e.g. along

river banks could be a business model for ports Miscanthus transport options from plantation sites in Eastern

Europe to clients in Western Europe value chains still have to be set up
