1. Laser light has four characteristics that distinguish it from the light produced by other

source, e.g. an electric bulb, a fluorescent lamp, or the sun. The light from these latter

sources travels in all directions. In contrast, laser light is highly directional: in other

words, it travels in only one direction.

The laser has a variety of uses. For example, industrial lasers cut teeth in saws, drill eyes

in surgical needles, and guide bulldozers. Surveyors use a laser range finder to measure

distances in making maps.

In communications, a laser can transmit voice messages and television signals. The laser

has great advantages over electronic transmitters, such as those used to produced radio

and TV signals. In scientific research, scientists are experimenting with laser to separate

isotopes of uranium. Laser can also disclose, even after 40 years, the fingerprint left by a

criminal on previously print-proof materials like leather or human skin.

In military operations, some types of bombs and artillery shells are guided to their targets

by laser beams. Current military research is attempting to develop high –energy lasers

that could destroy enemy aircraft and missiles- the USA’s Strategic Defence Initiative

(SDI) or ‘Star Wars’ programme. Satellites bearing such lasers could one day form a part

of weapons systems in outer space. (05 Marks)

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

I. The question paper is divided into three sections :

SECTION A : Reading 20 MARKS SECTION B : Writing and Grammar 30 MARKS SECTION C : Literature 30 MARKS

II. All questions are compulsory. III. You may attempt any section at a time. IV. All questions of that particular section must be attempted in the correct order.

SECTION –A: READING (20 Marks)

Q1. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:

1. Cricket is a global passion, played everywhere from Test match arenas to village greens, tropical beaches and dusty back lots. Cricket is the world's second most popular spectator sport after football.

2. The origin of cricket is somewhere in the Dark Ages. All research concedes that the game derived from a very old, widespread and uncomplicated pastime by which one player served up an object, be it a small piece of wood or a ball, and another hit it with a suitably fashioned club. Cricket was first recorded in 16th-century England, and it was played in grammar schools, farm communities and everywhere in between. But things really took off when 18th-century nobles realised it was a great sport.

3. The oldest surviving set of cricket laws date from 1744 – printed on a handkerchief, naturally. It's now in the MCC Museum at Lord’s in London. The oldest permanent fixture is the annual Eton v Harrow match, played since 1805. A young Lord Byron turned out for Harrow in the first match, though history doesn't record how poetic – or “mad, bad and dangerous” – his bowling was.

5. The first international match was in 1877 when Australia beat England in Melbourne. The match was dubbed a “Test”, since the gruelling nature of playing over five days was deemed the ultimate “test” for any side. But it was Australia’s first win on English soil – in 1882 at The Oval in London – that led to matches between the two nations being christened the Ashes. Following the defeat, newspapers published an obituary mourning “the death of English cricket”, adding that “the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia”.

6. A One Day International (ODI) is a form of limited overs cricket, played between two teams with international status, in which each team faces a fixed number of overs, usually 50. The Cricket World Cup is played in this format. The international one-day game is a late twentieth-century development. The first ODI was played on 5 January 1971 between Australia and England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Q2.Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:

1. Politeness has been well defined as benevolence in trifles. It is the desire to put those whom we meet perfectly at their ease, and save them from every kind of petty discomfort and annoyance. The limited part of benevolence called politeness requires only an inclination to make them happy temporarily, while they are in our presence, and when this can be done without any sacrifice on our part or only with a slight sacrifice of personal comfort.

2. Politeness is said to be one of the important characteristics of civilised person. Politeness is the art of

choosing among your thoughts. It must be implemented in every walk of life. When we deal with people elder to us we are polite. But, an honest polite person is polite with everyone, people of lower status, workers and even children. Not only with humans but also with animals we must be polite as they are our helpers.

3. Politeness is a skill. Like any other skill, you can master it with practice. The greatest enemy of

politeness is ego. To be a polite person, you have to sacrifice your ego. It is difficult for an egoist to be polite. You have to imply politeness in your thinking, speech and actions. Actions work more than words. Polite actions will give fine results. Politeness will reduce your stress and boost you to be productive. Apart from your present benefits, you protect your future. Being polite makes you mentally healthy. In our daily life we come across many incidents with people nearby and ourselves.

4. Different rules of behaviour have to be observed, accordingly as we are in the street or in the drawing-room, at home or at school, in the company of friends or of strangers. There is also to be considered the great diversity of social etiquette which distinguishes one country from another.

5. Politeness, besides being a duty that we owe to others, is a valuable possession for ourselves. It costs nothing, and yet may in many cases bring much profit. The great advantage of this excellence of conduct was very clearly expressed by Dr. Johnson, when he said that the difference between a well-bred and an ill- bred man is that one immediately attracts your liking, the other your dislike. SECTION A (READING)

1. Read the passage carefully. (8 marks) Martin Luther King, one of the greatest men ever to walk on this earth, started the defence force with which the American Blacks got their rights and gained freedom from the distressing racial discrimination. Martin was born on January 15, 1929. His family lived on the outskirts of Atlanta. The fact that he could not play with White children, or that he had to offer a seat in the bus to a White, disturbed him. When he was eight years old, his father a Baptist pastor, told the family a sad story: Bessie Smith, a great singer, met with an accident. An ambulance rushed her to the nearest hospital, but she was not admitted because she was a ‘Black’. The ambulance took her from one hospital to another, but she could not find a place for herself because these hospitals were only for the Whites. She died for want of blood. From that day, Martin Luther King dreamt of becoming a liberator of the Blacks. King completed his studies at Morehouse College, and then earned a doctor’s degree in theology at Boston University. In 1955, King married Albama Soprano Coretta Scott. That very year he became a pastor and preached his first sermon in the Baptist Church of Atlanta. As a young man, he was greatly impressed by Mahatma Gandhi’s success in the political field and the power of ahimsa.King decided to follow the path of non-violence and get millions of Blacks their due. He felt that the Blacks had immensely contributed towards the building of America, and there was no reason why they should not be treated with respect. King drew national attention in1956. Since the Blacks were not permitted to sit in the same buses as the Whites, he led a boycott of public buses in Montgomery. A year later, after many arrests and threats, the US Supreme Court gave a ruling that racial segregation of public transport as unlawful. This victory taught the Blacks the power of non-violence. After 1957, King began visiting various places to deliver lectures. Soon he became a powerful orator, drawing the attention of people the world over. King continued the fight, a peaceful fight, demanding the rights of the Blacks. In 1964,he was awarded the Nobel Prize. In 1967, King led many peaceful demonstrations against the Vietnam War and in 1968 he declared a Poor People’s Campaign. On April 4, of that very year, while planning a demonstration of striking sanitation workers, he was shot dead by an assassin. So, it was really a sad end of one of the greatest votaries of non-violence in recent times. Martin Luther died for a cause- for the rights of millions of American Blacks. His sacrifice didn’t go in vain. The American Blacks ultimately got their genuine rights and gained freedom from the hateful racial discrimination. Answer the following questions briefly;

Page 34: FINAL EXAMINATION - 2018 SOCIAL SCIENCE (CODE NO. 087) … Question Paper.pdf · 2017-09-27 · FINAL EXAMINATION - 2018 SOCIAL SCIENCE (CODE NO. 087) SAMPLE PAPER CLASS-X ... Amrita

(vi) When was King shot dead? (vii) Why did Martin Luther King sacrifice his life? (viii) Did King’s sacrifice go in vain? Why/ why not? 2. Read the passage carefully. (12 marks) 1. Education is the beginning of empowerment. It is a key to happy and satisfactory life for the special children, who are cruelly segregated from the society. In India, there are around 35 million disabled children but less than one percent have access to education. The most pressing need is to bestow the precious gift of education on them and let them be the bearer of torch towards the path of progress. 2. Special children, without education, are a burden on their families as well as society. The crude discrimination between normal and differently abled children leads to severe psychological disorders, giving birth to frustration which we all know, is not healthy for any progressing nation. Several NGOs are working towards the upliftment and betterment of such children, but again a grave problem that is faced by the volunteers is lack of motivation in such children and even their families. Those who are from the well-to-do families may not find themselves in this menace, but those belonging to the lower economic section feel that the effort to obtain education is simply wastage of time and energy, not to say anything about money. 3.Another factor which is hindering the path of education for such children is the lack of opportunities or facilities available in schools. Even if the parents do send such children to school, the schools themselves are sadly lacking the facilities to cater to their needs. The government has started the ‘Integrated System of Education‘that enables the disabled to study with normal children in normal circumstances with few facilities for them. Yet again we find psychological barriers amongst impaired children that they cast themselves in a hard mould. Special schools have also been established by the government and NGOs to meet specific needs of such children but their number is pitiably low as compared to the normal schools. 4. There is an urgent need to strike at the roots of this neglect to enable the disabled. A. Answer the following questions briefly; (2x4=8) (i) Who are special children? Why is education important for them? (ii) Why should the discrimination between normal and special children be avoided? (iii) What are the hindrances on the path of education for special children? SECTION –A (READING) 20 MARKS

1. Read the following passage carefully and answer the following

questions (10marks)

Students tend to lose their pencils, break them without thinking,

and find all sorts of non-writing uses for them. The pencil in your

hand is one of the most remarkable and useful tools in the world.

A man named Friedrich invented the modern “lead” pencil in

about 1622 in Germany. He was the first person to mass produce

them. Friedrich did not use lead, and there is no lead in your

pencil. However, some pencils did use lead until the early

twentieth century. Lead will make a mark, but it is toxic and not

safe to use either in the hands or around the face and mouth where

many pencils sometimes stray. Friedrich used black graphite, a

soft form of carbon. Graphite is still used today. It is mixed with

clay and wax and heated to high temperatures. The modern pencil

is a superb piece of technology. The pencil, less messy than ink,

can be easily erased, and makes clear, dark, smooth, and smudge

free lines. The modern pencil can produce a continuous line

twenty-two miles long.

2. Read the following passage carefully and answer the

questions that follow it. 10 marks

Do you know the story of the rupee? The word rupee comes

from the Sanskrit term „ Rupya‟ or „ Rupa‟ which means silver. The

very early coins before the second century BC, were all made of silver

but the coins were neither of any standard weight nor had any face or

value printed on them. It was Sher Shah Suri who first gave the name

“rupia” to the silver coins. The last silver coins were minted in 1940

with the face of King George VI on them. In 1942 the silver coin was

replaced by a cupro-nickel coin for the first time. Money was invented

by man to get power but now money has become more powerful than

man. All over the world, money and power go together. The more

money a person has, the more successful he is judged to be. A rich

man is accepted by society even if he is corrupt or evil. Man works

hard to earn more and more money and saves a lot of it. He thinks that

money will give him more freedom to enjoy himself and to have lots

of fun. He thinks he will not be anyone's slave but be his own master.

But soon he becomes the slave of money. The more he has, the more

he wants. He is never satisfied with what he has got but always wants

something more even though he knows that in the end, he cannot carry

anything with him. Money can buy everything but it cannot buy peace
