By T. Ma Cat* SpecialiReporter For my last column, I wanted to

tell you the story of my life but the staff threatened to set my tail on fire. So, instead, I'm going to take you into the world of a typical lay-out meeting of the Merciad.;: £ '

Week after week, seven loyal collegians, for better or worse, churned out a Merciad. Here are the Merciad 7 plus a few ghosts, ghouls, munchkins, and mischief-makers who magically pieced together our student newspaper. I Tuesday, 6 p.mf The Winches ter Cathedral chimes are clanging out the hour. With the last DONG? editor^; Casey Stevedore looks up from her packet of mail and articles and calls out, "Ok, where is everybody?" The question echoes in the e mpty room. f

In partial answer to the inquiry, assistant editor Lily Aix walks in. (Lily; dropped^ outiof sight in January when she began to give swimming lessons. It is rumored that she is being held captive by a merman at the bottom of the YMCA pool). "I have four stories for you, Casey,**jshe announces gleefully. As she ticks off the topics, Casey peels off four identical sheets from her pile. "Oh," says Lily, "you must have gotten the same press releases.''

A commotion is heard on the stairs and in tumbles news editor Karen "Speed Queen" j Filmer with a pencil in r her mouth, feature editor Cissy Vienna with a sandwich in her mouth, and assistant* sports editor Red Jackson with his foot| in his mouth. Karen grumbles,j_"Boy, it's pitch black on those stairs. In fact, it's so dark that those stairs could be used for test-of-nerves training for exorcists.''

As these three pull out* their articles, |business| manager Marsha Frank entersiwith RUS

president and honorary staffer Lucia Sprinter, who has come to help complain about everything. (I deliberately used "complain" instead of the more colorful "bitch" since, as -Ms. i Vienna notes, the latter I word has a negative connotation for women) .3

Marsha takes to the typewriter while everyone else counts wordsg (Everyone except our Swiss traveller Katy Kandy, who^has just begun her article on women s sports). 4 .; i | $$p

Before the last member of the Merciad 7 arrives, our super-star staffer comes in with an article, in fplace on his usual cartoon. Casey reads it over and exclaims, '•Holya-^lMVe can't^print;this! We can't use teachers' names like that." (Although the four-letter word used by Casey is common and quite harmless, I have decided* to follow President Nixon's example and delete the expletive). After a discussion, super-star agrees to cut out the names. gp V m I

At seven ?bells $ on | the I Winchester chimes, sports editor Mario Dipriani saunters in. Just in time to begin lav out. While the others juggle^inches, Mario sits opposite Red and the Fight of the Week begins. Mario objects to something in Red's article and Red, all riled up, kicks Mario's divots.

Speed Queen Karen interrupts the fight to announce, "I finished my page;n Slowpoke Cissy stares at her in disbelief. "Would you like me to help with your page?" Karen offers.

Now, Lucia and MarshaJ finished at; the typewriter, join the others at Ithe table. Lucia unburdens her woes about finding a graduation speaker and the staff helps her compile a list of potentials. "Great!" she beams, "now we have something to work

Joe Cook finished a game undef .500 but if he's as optimistic as I am he need not worry about next year. His problems in the middle part of the season were in pitching, but he's ended up wishing the 'Hurst bats would have carried off their early fine power for the end of the season. % * r k

Carl California, who was coming off a shoulder operation couldn't even get back to the place he was in the fall. Bobby Weismiller also had problems in the beginning, but recovered to beat the two best teams in the district in one weefoOn good days Bobby can't be bea t. Danny Hill pitched his best J in the beginning of the season but developed problems with his delivery and lost; every thing in the middle. He came back however to pitch a strong game against Youngstown and is another who is very tough when he's got it together. Ray Korzenowski is effective throughout the season but was declared an academic ineligibility at mid-season. So Cook can took for good pitching if things go well. The potential is there. At the plate we really had no problems as the stats will show! Jones, Meney, Henning and Wieczorek were the strength in that department The fielding has come a long'way too. There aren't any blaring neutral errors, or let-downs in communications on the field. For a team plagued with injuries and ineligibilities Cook has brought them along wayiand as the old saying goes, "wait until next year." s % 7? f

3§ A second after Lucia leaves, a collision is heard on the stairs. One of the colli dees; Ken Biiledy, pops in with some information. B? Casey looks up and welcomes him, "Come on in, Mr. McAndy. Staff, this is our faculty advisor."

"I just stopped by to meet the staff and see how things J are going." Casey tells shim ajfew basic facts about our operation and McAndy leaves. Once he's out of hearing range, Karen speaks up, "Hey Mr. McAndy, how about getting a light bulb f and standing out by the stairs for us?"

As the staff puts the finishing "touches on the lay out, Marsha § winks at Cissy-and says, "Hey

Mario, did you notice that vou and Cissy are wearing the same style and color of pants?" | *3g

j£» Putting on his jacket,: Mario answers, "Yea, I noticed," he grins. "Cissy, I wonder!what would happen if we got our pants

As Casey places the layout sheets in their folders, she wonders aloud if the assorted writers, photographer's 'and

; typists who show in their patterns £of regularity will come next

week. She turns out the light and says to the darkness, "Well, there's another crummy paper done." f f I

And what about me, you ask? I was born in the closet of the Waverly Mansion on a rainy day in June. My early years were spent...Hey, wait a minute, gang! Blow out the match. I was only kidding! 2 ^fc |

The 1973-74 sports season at Mercyhurst College is now history. As most sports writers will do, it's now time, to go back do a little second guessing and checking i of z, the records and evaluate the total worth of all the parts of the sports program. By doing this it is not only enlightening its readers who have not quite kept up with sports activities here at Mercyhurst, but also serves as an indicator of what we can expect in the future.

This sounds easy enough a task for anyone who can read statistics and has the ability to form an opinion. However we are now entering our most crucial year for sports here at Mercyhurst.

"We are at a time," to quote Dr. Marian Shane, "where we j must rethink our sports program." By this Dr. Shane is referring to a decision now necessary as to whether our intercollegiate sports^ program is serving the school well and the majority of its students. And what about woman's sports, physical education and intramurals? Are sufficiently catering to needs of the students. |£

There is presently an Athletic Committee of thecollege Senate who is assigned to toy and find their answers,They'11 prepare to write na sports philosophy in-fe eluding objects and priorities as j well as dealein such matters as b u d g e t s * c o m p e t i t i o n s , scholarships etc. The college has survived the growing pains of an intercollegiate sports program. We now stand at a fork in the road and it is time to set a course and go. *. I f
