1 DraftSight Free Version Installation Quick Guide This section provides step‐by‐step instructions about how to install DraftSight on your Operating System. We recommend reading the entire Installation Guide. In this Section
How to prepare the DraftSight Standalone Installation Installing and launching DraftSight DraftSight Activation The DraftSight Community
For information about installing the network‐licensed version of the program, please refer to the DraftSight Network Installation Guide.
4
1.1 ‐ Preparing for Installation To guarantee a successful installation, before you start installing DraftSight, it’s important that you review your system requirements, understand administrative permission requirements, and address the points referenced below.
1.1.A ‐ Review System Requirements Check if the computer on which you are going to install DraftSight meets the system requirements. Not meeting the system requirements might originate in the future performance problems, and/or errors, either when using DraftSight or your Operating System. For more information on the system requirements, see System Requirements (page 22).
1.1.B ‐ Administrative Permissions Requirements We recommend that the DraftSight installation and activation, is performed by a user with administrator permissions. You do not need to have domain administrative permissions. If you are installing in a network based computer, or if in doubt, we recommend you check with your local network administrator if you have permissions to do so. To run DraftSight, you won’t need administrator permissions. You can run the program as a “standard” user with limited permissions.
1.1.C ‐ Dealing with Security Software Note that anti‐virus programs sometimes can be an obstacle to software installation and activation, so you may want to disable any anti‐virus protection you have running on your system. Add DraftSight to the anti‐virus “trusted programs list”, www.draftsight.com to the “trusted websites list”, and allow it through any active firewall. If you experience problems when performing the DraftSight activation, please refer to the troubleshooting section in this guide, or to the “Installation and Activation Guide” blog post in the DraftSight Community (https://swym.3ds.com/#post:1291).
1.1.D ‐ How to Avoid Data Loss During Installation The DraftSight installation process may stop if some applications are running. Close all applications to avoid possible data loss or corruption. Shut down all the unnecessary programs that are running in your system tray. Usually if you right‐click an icon with your mouse you'll get a menu that helps you to exit the software. If you are using customization files within DraftSight, and/or customized environments, backup these files before initiate the installation.
1.1.E ‐ Update ‐ Keeping your Custom Settings from Previous Versions You can keep your custom settings and files from previous DraftSight releases. It is recommended that you migrate from a previous release when a new one is available. Every release includes fixes for previously reported issues, and new features. All your custom settings can be kept, and used in the new release. When you migrate to a new DraftSight version, you will receive the following message:
The message is displayed to ask whether to keep the earlier application folder (containing your customised files) or not. If you click Yes, the settings or customizations made in the earlier version installed are erased and a new folder with new default settings is created. If you click No, then the previous customizations and settings are retained.
5
1.2 ‐ Installing and Launching DraftSight Close all running applications. Shut down all the unnecessary programs that are running in your system tray. Usually if you right‐click an icon with your mouse you'll get a menu that helps you to exit the software. To use the product, you only need to download and install it. As soon as you have installed it, you can start using it immediately. You will be prompted to activate the product, and you can choose to activate DraftSight immediately or enjoy a 30 days trial period.
1.2.A ‐ Installing DraftSight DraftSight is distributed ONLY through the Dassault Systemes website or the Dassault communities. Download DraftSight from the following URL:
Click on the link, corresponding to your operative system to initiate the process. A pop‐up window will show up, with the license agreement.
6
Click the accept button, and the download begins. Locate the DraftSight installer file you downloaded, and double click on the file, to launch the installation wizard.
Click next to continue the installation.
Read the License Agreement and click Next. For DraftSight Premium edition installation, click the options key and
select Network Installation.
7
If the installation is successful, exiting the installation wizard, DraftSight will launch automatically.
During the installation process, the installation wizard scans your machine, looking for installed DraftSight
versions. If one is detected, you will be informed that your current application folder is out of date, and asked if you want to update it.
Please note that, if you choose YES, the Application data folder will be re‐created, and you will lose your customizations/customization files. If you want to keep these, you need to choose NO, or export them/backup these files before you start the installation process, in order to import them to DraftSight, after the installation process is completed. For more information about importing/exporting customization files in DraftSight, see the DraftSight migration section (page 14).
8
When DraftSight is launched for the first time, you will be prompted to activate the product. For more information about the DraftSight Activation process, see the activating DraftSight section (page 9).
You can choose to postpone the activation, and enjoy a 30 Days trial period, or activate the product immediately.
You need to provide a valid E‐mail address, as you will receive an activation confirmation email. This E‐mail contains a link, that needs to be clicked, in order to complete the activation process. If you don’t click on this link, the activation process will not be completed.
When DraftSight launches, you will be prompted to provide the settings of your DraftSight Crash Report
Feedback. Please note that Crash Reports are an essential tool for us to know which functionalities might have problems, and thereby help us to identify the issues that users are facing. All the feedback, and information that is provided is fundamental in order to identify problems, solve them, and improve DraftSight.
The installation is now completed. We hope you enjoy your DraftSight experience!

1.3 ‐ DraftSight Activation The DraftSight activation is a process set in place in order to monitor the number of DraftSight users worldwide. The only data collected in the process is the email address that you provide. No other type of data is submitted. DraftSight™ requires an active internet connection, and a valid email address, to perform the product activation. Here is an overview of the activation process:
a) After installing, the first time you launch DraftSight™, you are prompted to activate DraftSight. The activation can be performed immediately, or you can choose to enjoy a 30 days trial period.
b) Choosing to activate, you will be asked to provide a valid email address.
c) The information is sent to the DraftSight™ activation server, which automatically sends an activation
confirmation email to the email address provided.
d) The activation confirmation email contains a link, which must be clicked, in order to complete the activation.
10
e) Clicking on the link, you will be directed to a page that will confirm that your activation was successful:
f) A confirmation email is automatically send, confirming the activation, and inviting you to join the DraftSight Community.
11
a) Activation is required again 6 months after the initial activation and then again at 12 months. From this point, activation is required annually. If you experience problems when performing the DraftSight activation, please refer to the FAQ’s and troubleshooting reference section on page 28 or to the DraftSight Community (https://swym.3ds.com/#post:1291)
1.3.A ‐ Activating DraftSight in Network Environments Using Proxy Servers If the workstation where you installed DraftSight is on a network environment, that uses a Proxy Server to connect to the internet, you might need to add a step to the activation process. Please note that if you are installing DraftSight in a network environment, we recommend you contact your Local Network Administrator, inform him that you are installing the application, and the product activation requires an active internet connection. Your LAN Administrator might also help you avoiding problems with network/internet security settings, or security applications that might interfere with the installation and/or activation processes (e.g. add DraftSight to the network firewall exclusion list). Consult with him as well, if your user account has the necessary permissions to perform the installation/activation (software installation, access to system folders/files, etc.). Note that anti‐virus and/or firewalls can sometimes be an obstacle, so you may want to disable these during the installation/activation, and add www.draftsight.com to the list of websites that do not require authentication by any configuration script, and to any list of “Trusted Websites” that might be in place.
1.3.B ‐ Activating DraftSight ‐ Proxy Servers Information Once the installation process is completed, and DraftSigt is launched by the first time, if no internet connection is detected, or if your workstation connects to the internet through a Proxy Server, DraftSight will return the following message:
12
And the activation dialog box will have the input fields blocked, as shown below:
As shown in the network access manager message, to allow DraftSight to connect to the internet, you must provide the information required to connect to the Proxy Server. From the previous screen/message, click “Activate later” and DraftSight will launch.
a) In the DraftSight menu, go to Tools> Options (or type options in your command line) b) Click the System Options tab, and expand the option General, and then expand the option Proxy Server settings
c) Provide the information required (type of proxy, Host Name, Port, User, and Password) d) Click apply, and close DraftSight. The next time you launch the program, you should be able to perform and
complete the product activation process
13
1.4 ‐ The DraftSight Community When you activate DraftSight, you are asked to join the DraftSight Community. Why should you do it? The DraftSight community is the place to share your DraftSight experiences, learn more, and ask questions. You will also have access to learning content, troubleshooting techniques for the most common issues, and you can suggest and vote for enhancements to be included in future DraftSight releases.
The DraftSight Community is accessible using the link in the DraftSight product page, and in the following url:

2 Migrating DraftSight from an earlier Version In this Section This section provides instructions on how to migrate/update your DraftSight Version.
Preparing the migration/version update System Requirements Installing DraftSight Register and activate DraftSight Reinstall or repair DraftSight Uninstall DraftSight
15
2.1 ‐ Preparing the Migration/Version Update To guarantee a successful migration, like for a “clean” installation, before you start the process, it’s important that you review your system requirements, understand administrative permission requirements, and address the points referenced below, to make sure your Installation is successful. Plus, we recommend that you backup your customization files. Please review the steps regarding the preparation for installation section (page 4), alongside the steps below.
2.2 – Customizations and Settings Backup DraftSight offers the option to create, import, or export your customization files, and/or favourite settings. This option can be used not only to share your customizations and environment or corporate standards, but also to allow you to backup these, in case something goes wrong with your machine. The main sets of customization that we recommend you to backup‐ are user preferences like the command aliases, the user interface, or printing configuration files or RichLine Types. The files location may differ from one user to another or in the different Operative Systems, but the access to the settings and export function are static. See below the most used customizations/settings, and how to access them.
2.2.A – Support Files Support files include fonts, menus, and optional, user‐defined settings such as dictionaries and customization files. Support file locations are automatically set during the installation process, and predefined paths are specified for the support files. The support file search path ‐ specifies the folders in which the program should look for text fonts, customization files, drawings to insert, linetypes, and hatch patterns that are not in the current folder. It also specifies the names and locations of various types of files. All these file paths are customizable. For more information on customization options of these files and file paths, please refer to the DraftSight Customization Quick Reference, available in the DraftSight Community under the Blog Post “DraftSight Customization Guide”, and in your help files.

2.3 – The Application Data Folder Administration Before upgrading DraftSight to SP3, the Application Data folder requires a backup and a restore after DraftSight upgrade. Backing up the DraftSight data folder is a recommended security practice after each application data modification (explained below.) When upgrading DraftSight to the SP3 version, some customization data has to be manually updated.
Note: Do not uninstall DraftSight SP2 prior to updating to SP3.
2.3.A – Where is the DraftSight Application Data Folder? In Windows, the Application Data is represented by the environment variable %appdata%. The DraftSight Application folder is located in %appdata%\Draftsight\. In Windows XP/2000, it pointed to c:\documents and settings\%username%\application data. In Windows 7, it points to c:\users\%username%\appdata\roaming. In MAC OS the DraftSight Application Data folder is in this location: /Users//Library/Preferences/DraftSight/1.2.xxx/ In Linux the DraftSight Application Data folder is in this location: \opt\dassault‐systemes\draftsight\Default Files\Support\ The Linux Application Data folder is saved in the version.xml file at this directory.
Services Pack No. Application Data Folder Name SP0 1.2.148 SP1 1.2.156 SP2 1.2.163 SP3 1.2.188
The DraftSight SP3 version has new functionalities controlled with new UI utilities that can be configured and controlled by the SP3 Application Data folder. The SP3 Application Data folder has different structure than the older Services Pack Application Data folders. Therefore, a back‐up and restore is required prior to upgrading to DraftSight SP3. After the installation of the DraftSight SP3, the application is automatically launched. If an older version was installed, the following message window pops up:
19
Answering ‘No’: The previous SP2 version’s System Application option settings are still the current.
Answering ‘Yes’: A new Application Data Folder is created in the %appdata%\draftsight\ file location.
The new folder is created with the default user option settings. The last SP2 Application Data settings will not be restored.
2.3.B – Backup and Restoring the Application Data Folder Step# 1. Backing up the Application Data Folder Windows XP and 7 Create this dedicated directory outside the %appdata% on the local system hard disk drive, avoid removable or network drives that can be unexpectedly unavailable.
To open the DraftSight Application Data folder, open Windows Explorer and go to %appdata%. Change directory to DraftSight. Open the Application Data folder of the current service pack (SP2, or SP1 if used). Copy and paste all the files from the Application Data folders to the newly created folder.
MAC and Linux Using the Application Data folder locations for each OS as mentioned previously, copy and paste the files as described for Windows XP and Win7. Step # 2: Operations within DraftSight
Download and install DraftSight SP3 from www.draftsight.com. DraftSight is launched automatically afterwards. Restore customizations Application Data settings:
– In the Main Toolbar, select Tools‐>Options… – Click the File locations tab: Open each node and restore paths as needed by copying and pasting the each of
the file‐path settings created in Step# 1.

On the Uninstall DraftSight page‐ click Next to remove DraftSight from the system. 4. When informed that the product has been successfully uninstalled, click Finish.
3.2 ‐ Activation Issues This section outlines common issues and their solutions with regards to DraftSight activation, and licensing. You can also refer to the Installation and Activation Blog post or to the iQuestions Section in the DraftSight Community.
3.2.A – “Why do I need to Activate? What information am I sending?” During the activation process, the only data collected is the email address you provide. This is done, so the number of DraftSight users world‐wide can be monitored. No other type of data is submitted.
3.2.B – Multiple User Accounts on one Computer The DraftSight activation must be performed by each user, as it’s not machine based. This means that if you have multiple users, with different accounts, using the same PC, and all need to use DraftSight, each one needs to active the product individually on each user account.
3.2.C – I received an error message “Activation Server not available. Please check your Internet connection”, but my Internet connection is working. The DraftSight activation might be being blocked by active security settings or software. Also, if you are installing DraftSight on a network environment, this might be due to Local Area Network/Security Settings, or Proxy Settings. To troubleshoot this issue, please refer to the Installation and Activation Blog Post in the DraftSight Community, and to the activation overview document included. Also refer to the DraftSight activation section in this document. We recommend you inform your Local Network Administrator that you are installing DraftSight. Also, he can help you set a security exclusion for DraftSight so that the activation can be completed.
3.2.D – I receive an error message: “There was an error processing your registration”. When you were performing the DraftSight activation, you clicked the link in the activation confirmation E‐mail, and received this error message: “There was an error process your registration. Visit the DraftSight Community, and review the iQuestions for possible solutions, or to report a problem.” This is a server side activation error and might indicate that when you tried to perform the DraftSight activation, the activation server was going through maintenance or there was a temporary network problem. In this case, allow reasonable time for the issue be addressed, and try to activate later, using the link on the confirmation Email. If the problem persists in the next 24 hours, assume the registry process failed, and perform the activation with a different E‐mail address.
29
3.2.E – “I did not received the Activation Confirmation E‐mail” Some email providers, or applications might filter emails from “unknown senders” and mark them as SPAM (false positives). Check the SPAM folder of your mailbox, as the activation confirmation mail might have been filtered. If the problem persists in the next 24 hours, assume the registry process failed, and perform the activation using a different E‐mail address.
3.2.F ‐ What is the difference between the Free Version license and a Premium/network license? The free version is registered and activated to an individual user. While the software can be installed on multiple workstations, the registration only allows one system to be operational. If you need to run more systems, you need to download/install the free version, and activate the product individually, or consider converting to a network license (DraftSight Premium Pack). Network licensed products rely upon a Network License Manager to manage the software licenses. The software can be installed and run on multiple workstations, beyond the maximum number of licenses you’ve purchased. The Network License Manager allows concurrent/floating licensing and “checks out” licenses until they are all in use. No more workstations can run the program until a license is “checked in”. If you need to run DraftSight in more workstations, you can purchase additional licenses for the Network License Manager to maintain.
3.2.G ‐ What is the benefit to using a network version (Premium Package)? The DraftSight Premium Package is recommended for large Drafting/Design Production, Educational Environments, and lab environments. The main advantage is that you can install DraftSight on more systems than the number of licenses you have purchased (for example, purchasing 25 licenses but installing on 40 workstations). At any one time, products will run on the maximum number of systems for which you have licenses. This means you get a true floating license. If software needs to be run on more systems, additional licenses can be purchased. Registration and activation occurs only once and the licenses are maintained on your Network License Server. Also, you have access to:
Telephone support (Toll free number for the U.S. and Canada, a fee‐based international number and a fee UK‐based number, Monday – Friday, 7 AM to 10 PM UTC.)
API support – LISP, COM, and more to follow Email support Remote desktop sharing Web support Services offered within online Community Support

3.2.H ‐ What Information is collected by DraftSight? We understand the concerns regarding personal and/or business data. The Information provided is not disclosed at any point, or used outside the ranges mentioned below. Dassault Systemes uses the computer‐specific information only to verify that your product is used within the scope allowed by the DraftSight End‐User License Agreement (EULA). The information is stored in a database and used only for product activation. The DraftSight activation process is a secure and anonymous one‐time process. After activation is complete, the activation technology in the product never contacts DraftSight except with your express knowledge and consent. DraftSight collects the minimum information required to successfully verify the product license for each product installation, which includes: the product serial number, name, version, and language; the operating system name, version, and language; and your computer’s processor and hard‐disk type. This information is combined, encrypted, and then sent to DraftSight for verification. DraftSight also uses the industry‐standard Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) to transmit data to product activation servers that are both physically secure and have limited employee access.

3.2.I ‐ What is Web Browser and Internet Connection used for? You need an “active” internet connection and web browser to download DraftSight, and perform the DraftSight activation. After installing the product, when you launch DraftSight the first time, you will be prompted to activate DraftSight. You can choose to activate later, and use it during a 30 days trial period. If you choose to activate DraftSight, you will need an active internet connection, and a web browser to perform the activation. Once you’ve entered your registration data (E‐mail address) and submitted it to Dassault Systemes, an activation E‐mail is generated by the activation server, who sends a confirmation E‐mail to the E‐mail address you provided. Click the link in this confirmation E‐mail, and you will not be prompted again during start‐up.
3.3 ‐ Uninstall and Maintenance Issues This section outlines common issues and their solutions with regards to adding and removing customized files, reinstalling or repairing your installation, and uninstalling products.
3.3.A ‐ When should I reinstall DraftSight instead of repair the Installation? You should reinstall DraftSight if you accidentally delete or alter files that are required by the program. Missing or altered files will adversely affect the performance of your product and cause error messages when you try to execute a command or find a file. If an attempt to repair an installation fails, reinstalling is the next best option. Make sure you backup any customization files you are using to avoid losing data.
3.3.B ‐ After repairing my installation, is it possible to recover my settings? Custom settings can be exported and later re‐imported to the same system in case you have to repair the installation of your program. For more detailed information regarding exporting and importing custom settings, see customizations and settings backup (page15), or refer to the DraftSight Help.
3.3.C ‐ When I uninstall my software, what files are left on my system? If you uninstall the product, some files will remain on your system such as files you’ve created or edited like drawings or custom menus. Your product activation information also stays on your workstation when you uninstall your product. If you reinstall on the same workstation, the license information remains valid and you do not have to reactivate the product, except on the expected re‐activation periods.
