Butterfly effect

Page 8: Final Major Project

I chose Damien Hirst’s work is because he do a lot butterfly works. The butterflies are very colourful. He uses different colour and the colour used are both primary and secondary colours which are yellow and green. The patterns which are butterflies print form a cycle image or a circular or continuous motion . There are small butterflies in the middle that make me feel that big butterflies are protecting the small ones. Although the butterflies are weak but they are still work as a group and help each other. Line are not used as long or short lines they are used as curves to form the shape of butterfly, and all the butterflies are arrange in a circle pattern. The texture of this print is smooth because is a 2 dimensional work which is printed on a piece of photographic paper because the image of the butterflies used are photographs. The shape in this artwork is mainly circles because this piece of art work as been done digitally. I think his butterfly symbolize art and natural. Because during his butterfly exhibition there are thousand of butterflies had died as they had been moved around.

Evaluation

-what 2D/3D mark making techniques have you used? Why?

-what is the subject matter?

-what idea have you explored in your work

-colour –line –shape –form –texture –tone

–what is the effect of each of these? What do they make you think of? How do they make you feel?

This is one of my experiment, at first I got this colour PVA sheet done then I cut out the shape of a butterfly. I tried to put glitter on it but doesn’t work, as the glitters are wet it makes the PVA sheet to tear. So again I put this butterfly on top of the PVA glue. The green butterfly was cut out from the green ink PVA sheet. The thing I like is the texture, there was bubble on the butterfly and some are crumple together. In the end I didn’t use this one is because I found that it doesn’t very look like a butterfly, and doesn’t give people a kind of 3D effect.

I had use recycle paper to fold some origami butterfly.

Page 12: Final Major Project

This is my second experiment, firstly I use the scalpel cut out a butterfly and do some detail in the butterfly on the cardboard paper. After that I put it on the PVA glue and cover it with another layer of glue. Then I dripped the ink in between and let it dry. I tried to cut out two different type of butterfly and tried them on two different colour cardboard to see the different effect on them. The ink give people a natural and wild.

Evaluation

The 2D techniques I used is PVA glue and ink on the plastic sheet, as the outcome will be transparent and with some colours which are ink colours. Then I will cut out the shape of butterfly which is my subject matter and my other subject matter is a flower which will be made from the same plastic sheet of Pva glue and ink colours. I will tried to manipulate the plastic sheet to form a butterfly shape. I will also cut out the strip of the plastic sheet, so that I can curl it around and make it as a flower. I had tried out both in dark and light colour then compare the effect on them. The light colour make people feel nature beauty of both the butterfly and flowers but the dark colour make both the subject feel mysterious to people. I got the idea from origami using the PVA sheet. The forms of lines in my project are mainly curves. Also, the texture of the project is smooth because of the amount of PVA glue I used with the inks.

I made a wooden frame and use the fishing line to hang some butterfly from top board. Then I use the wire to made some butterfly stand on the bottom wood board. This wooden frame was place in the middle of the window so that the sunlight will pass through naturally.

This was development from the first try. I take off all the wires and glue the butterflies straight away on the window by using the glue gun. I arrange them in order so that they will not meet each other. And it was look like butterflies flying in the sky.

This is my final outcome. I take off the bottom wood board and use some longer fishing line to hand them so that it will look so neat.

Evaluation

That is my final outcome. When the sunlight pass through we can imagine that butterflies are flying in the sky. We also can see that some edge of the butterflies are damaged, and there are holes in the middle. As we know butterflies are represent peace, but in here the butterflies are fighting so they get hurts and damage. The pattern of the butterfly are very look like the flowers and some withered leaves as well. The butterflies are fragile so they are trying to camouflage themselves in the nature. It was success as it shows the effect that I wanted. The use of colours made it effective and eye catching.
