STATMENT OF INTENT
DECONSTRUCTING AND PIXELATING IMAGERY looking at what this project will do for me in result of my final grade I have been looking at what I
did well in. As a result of this I have decided to look back towards the one word project, using one or an idea to base the project on was very successful. The word I was looking at would be deconstruct, this idea allows me the think of art in a way to decode images and relate them to an idea.
My project will have to look into the way we see new people that surround us in everyday life and acOvity. What does a new face mean to us, how do they make us feel, do they provoke hosOlity or kindness when we great them.
I will have to deconstruct a person so we cant see who they are, physically and emoOonally, I will need to show these to other people to help them realise how they actually see someone random to them, or how they see them selves.
FINAL MAJOUR PROJECT TECHNIQUES
During this project I will look at arOsts that focus on deconstrucOng and build relaOonships with people and objects in their art. Looking at the brief I have set myself I will need to understand that the pictures I take of people that I know and people that I have met will change the way I think of them, I will need to escape my emoOons to them and consider them someone I have just met, like a stranger. My emoOons could alter the way I construct the art around them, weather that be highlighOng the areas and focusing on the aSributes that I know and see and instead leaving it a blank canvas for other people to observe.
CHUCK CLOSE
Charles Thomas "Chuck" Close (born July 5, 1940) is an American painter and photographer who achieved fame as a photorealist, through his massive-‐scale portraits.
His techniques were to use small squares of colours, mainly using oil and pencil on canvas. The arOst creates these pieces of art of using pictures of famous people to create this known presence of who it is without knowing the emoOon behind the photograph or painOng.
His techniques communicate lost wonder in the painOng, the pencil and oil are used together to get this light refracOon, as if the oil was sOll wet. To me it looks like the painOng were drowned in water or oil, helps give the illusions that the art is sOll alive.
The art I have found for the internet has been very useful to me. Now I am in my second week of the project I feel that these are a very good images to start my project trials. The images that are in colour help show the controlling emoOon that comes through the original photograph or object.
EXPERIMENTS EVALUATION
Looking at the experiments I have performed for my deconstruct brief I feel that these are a very good starOng point, the way I have conducted the second week of the task has helped me to understand more about the process to get the emoOonal side away from the photograph and the edited piece.
I like the black and white look to the picture as again it helps the on lookers from having any first concepOons about the nature of the person in the picture or their circumstances.
I think they are a very successful set of photographs, I think that the flawed faces are help the deconstructed imagery that the brief explains. The way the pixels line up help give the illusion of someone that you pass on the street, the nameless person you take no noOce of.
LocaOon scouOng and imagery experiments
Now I am entering into my third week of the project I am starOng to experiment with objects and photography I am looking at what works with lighOng and space, I will look at what I will have to manage when it comes to my final outcomes.
LocaOon evaluaOon
For my locaOon scouOng I went to London, around the river Thames, this was to beSer understand how the background of my pieces would look when they were deconstructed and expanded upon.
I was very pleased with the outcome, I found that highlighOng individual objects and buildings and deconstrucOng them gave a very original look to the pictures.
I would have liked to visit more spaces instead of city scopes and streets. I feel the spaces would be more interesOng when it comes to deconstruct as it wouldn’t be an open environment.
Close up deconstructed photography
The following pictures are those that I tried some close up macro photography with, I use a dslr camera to get the macro up close details on the flowers.
I decided to get some close up photographs so that I could experiment with the colours in the frame. Looking at the pictures that follow I think I like the vivid colours and I think that for my final piece I will use more of a countryside than the city scene, the blues and grays I feel will not bring out a big enough contrast for the final piece.
Experiments
The following pictures are experiments of people that I know in London and the back streets in Westminster. I found that using the people that I know to be in the pictures, it has helped deconstruct them to the point where they are unrecognisable to me, I know when I have completed ediOng each photo that I have done a good job.
I tried to put my friends in spaces that have lots of colours in them, for example park and bright streets. I felt that the macro photos helped me to understand the colour balance in the pictures. I feel that they worked very well.
I did have worries about the pictures be over-‐exposed however that wasn't the case when I edited them.
Final idea
For my final Idea I am going to concentrate on my final pictures being in a more open space. I plane to use more vivid colours to help the contrast of deconstructed imagery and background. I plan to use someone that I haven't used before in a project, therefore when someone looks at my final piece they wont recognize the person in the picture.
IniOal photos
These are some iniOal photos that I took of my friend to be my model for my final piece of work. I got a range of photos to take and edit into my final piece, I feel that because of the range of photos I can choose the best one that fit in with the normal side of the brief.
The brief said that I had to have someone that you wouldn’t look twice at to deconstruct, I like the picture of the plain face as this is something that you see everyday on the street.
Unlike the London pictures where they incorporate a street and other people I feel that the deconstructed imagery in the fields of Essex helps the overall feel to the pictures when it comes to ediOng the pictures.
This is the photo that I am going to use for my final piece, however I am approaching the last few weeks of the project and I feel like I need to experiment with it more. I have decided to create prints of my work.
I feel that this experiment with the process will help my move on to a greater final piece.
This is the deconstructed image before and aeer ediOng. The black and white picture paper was used it to print onto cartage paper. The design was a very large deconstructed pixilated picture, my plan was to print this over the same picture so that I could get the contrast of deconstructed black and white print over a full colour original.
This is the result of the print on paper. I think that the print was very successful however I do not think it works well with the brief. I feel that my brief did explain that I need to experiment with process’ however I fell that this just isn't good enough for my final majour project final outcome. I think that even the colour print didn’t work as the outcome sOll was sufficient.
I think that these prints have showed me that my final outcome will have to be a 2D photo edited picture to help show the relaOon between the known and deconstructed. I feel that this will beSer develop my understanding of the art and what it will help me achieve ill be a much beSer outcome that that of a photo print or print montage.
Process evaluaOon
The whole project I feel has been a success, I like the way I have stuck to a Ome plan, criOcally thinking of what needed to be done each week and compleOng that work. My developmental work has been great as I have experienced and experimented with different process’ that include print making, experimental photography and computer based ediOng. I feel that I have worked well with my space and alone in the streets of London to achieve the highest possible outcome. If I was to do the process again I would change the amount of range of work I did and try to focus more on one type of development.
