Is Asthma giving
you Heartburn?
With asthma, you know you'll be dealing with breathing problems from time to time. But, what's with all the
Heartburn? Sometimes, it just seems that health conditions like to gang up on a person. And, a digestive
disorder called gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) happens to be asthma's partner in crime. As
many as 70 percent of people with asthma also have GERD. In addition to heartburn, symptoms of GERD
may include:
Having an acid taste in your mouth after you eat
Difficulty or pain when swallowing
Hoarseness
Coughing
Researchers aren't sure exactly how or why GERD and asthma seem to go together. But, because
asthma changes pressures in your chest, it may relax the valve between your stomach and esophagus.
As a result, the acid in your stomach may flow up your esophagus and into your throat and mouth.
So, asthma appears to increase the risk of having GERD. And, GERD doesn't do asthma any favors. The
acid in your throat can irritate your airways and increase your sensitivity to other asthma triggers, such as
pollen and smoke. To complicate matters, certain medicines for asthma (such as theophylline,
aminophylline, and such cortisones as prednisone or Deltasone®) may aggravate esophageal reflux.
Be sure your doctor is aware of your symptoms of acid reflux when he or she prescribes medications
for asthma.
It's important to talk with your doctor if you have asthma and GERD symptoms. He or she can diagnose
and treat the problem. If you have GERD, your doctor may recommend that you:
Lose weight
Quit smoking
Cut back on alcohol and caffeine intake
Eat smaller meals - especially in the evening
Avoid spicy, citrusy, fatty or fried food
Wait at least two to three hours after eating to lie down
Use a large block under the head of the bed to elevate it 6 to 8 inches. The goal is to keep the level of the
chest above that of the abdomen. This can help reduce reflux during the night. Simply sleeping with
your head on two or three pillows usually isn't sufficient
Over-the-counter medicines, such as antacids and H2 blockers, also may help manage symptoms of
GERD. And, your doctor may prescribe an acid-reducing medicine called a proton pump inhibitor. With
appropriate treatment, you should see an improvement in both you asthma and GERD symptoms.

Why do some relationships thrive while others fail? Are there secrets to a lasting marriage?
John Gottman, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at the University of Washington, has been looking for
answers to questions like these since 1973. Over the years, he's studied hundreds of relationships and
written numerous scholarly papers and self-help books. In the process, he and other researchers at the
Gottman Institute - dubbed the Love Lab - have learned to predict, with more than 90 percent accuracy,
which couples will succeed and which will divorce. Based on their research, here are some tips for
building a happier marriage:
Bad habits can escalate conflicts and damage relationships. Avoid:
Harsh criticism
Contempt
Sarcasm
Eye rolling
Walking away
You're bound to disagree occasionally. Open and honest communication is key to the
health of a marriage. However, keep these tips in mind during an argument:
Discuss matters gently and without blame.
Make it clear you're on common ground. "This is our problem."
Use "I feel" statements rather than "you do" statements to decrease defensiveness. For example,
"I feel like you're not listening to me," instead of, "You don't listen to me."
Exit arguments as gracefully and cordially as possible.
Or, use a little humor or an expression of affection to make it clear you still love one another. If things
become heated, agree to a 20-minute break before resuming the discussion.
Consider your partner's feelings when conflicts or obstacles arise. Sometimes, you may
need to change your plans or compromise.
The happiest couples have high standards for each other. Ask
yourself:
Are you getting treated with love, affection and respect?
Do you feel there is a basis of nurturing and support?
Do you really like spending time with this person? Is it easy to be together?
Do you like yourself when you are with this person?
Do you feel you have a shared sense of purpose and meaning in life, and similar values?
You love each other, right? Don't be shy about saying so. In healthy marriages, positive
statements outnumber negatives ones by about 5 to 1, the Gottman Institute reports. Also, find ways to
show your affection. Give plenty of hugs and kisses, for example, and do things to let your partner know
you're thinking of him or her. Be kind and thoughtful to your partner, just as you would be to anyone
outside your home.
Learn what pleases, annoys, angers or saddens your partner. How does your
behavior affect his or her emotions? The Gottman Institute calls this "emotional intelligence." The more in
tune you are with one another, the stronger your marriage.
If you're having trouble with your marriage, don't let it slide. Most couples wait six years
before seeking therapy or counseling. Since many marriages fail in the first seven years, that help may
come too late. View getting help for your relationship as a strength, not a weakness. All relationships can
use help from time to time.
Know the danger signs.
Argue gracefully.
Be flexible.
Expect the best from each other.
Stay positive.
Study your partner.
Get help early.

It may sound obvious, but getting pregnant involves teamwork. If you and your partner are planning for a
family, there's a lot you can do to increase your chances of a healthy, successful pregnancy. In fact,
researchers are discovering that men can take steps to maximize fertility.
The American Pregnancy Association and other experts recommend that you follow these five steps:
A healthful diet that includes a variety of whole grains, fruits and vegetables can help
increase the chances of fertility. Taking a multivitamin may improve reproductive health, too.
Being at a healthy weight may increase your fertility. In a study of nearly 1,600
Danish men, those who had a body mass index (BMI) between 20 and 25 had a sperm count
significantly higher than men who were outside that range. BMI is a tool that uses weight and height to
help assess body fat.
These BMI ranges apply to most adults:
Underweight is less than 18.5
Healthy weight is 18.5 to 24.9
Overweight is 25 to 29.9
Obese is 30 or higher
Your doctor can calculate your BMI.
Overheating below the belt can lower your sperm count. So, take a break from hot tubs,
saunas, electric blankets, heating pads and long, hot showers. Try wearing looser clothes, too - boxers
instead of briefs, for example. This may help nature cool things down.
Some, including the following, can affect fertility by
lowering sperm count or quality:
Cimetidine, sulfasalazine or nitrofurantoin, which are used to treat ulcers, gastrointestinal problems
and urinary tract infections
Steroids, such as prednisone and cortisone, which are used to treat asthma, arthritis and
skin conditions
Chemotherapy and radiation for cancer
Talk with your doctor about any medicine you take. He or she can offer advice and, if necessary,
alternatives.
Alcohol, cigarettes and illegal drugs can change the
shape and movement of sperm and lower sperm count. Exposure to radiation, pesticides or other
chemicals also can lower fertility.
Your doctor can help you be as healthy as possible when you're trying to conceive. Consider scheduling
an appointment if you and your partner are planning on a family.
1. Eat right.
2. Step on the scale.
3. Keep cool.
4. Review your medicines and medical treatments.
5. Change unhealthy habits or environments.

Vitamin D is not only good for your bones, but it also may be good for the rest of your body. Research
suggests that including it in your daily diet may help prevent or treat:
Breast, prostate and colorectal cancer
Muscle weakness in older adults
Pain
Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes
Rheumatoid arthritis
Multiple sclerosis
High blood pressure
Heart disease
Despite these potential benefits, many of us have low vitamin D levels. This may be due to an increased
use of sunscreen to protect against skin cancer. The skin makes vitamin D when exposed to the sun's
ultraviolet rays, but sunscreen blocks most of these rays.
Current guidelines call for 200 to 600 international units (IU) of vitamin D a day. But, the numbers were set
more than 10 years ago. The goal then was to help the body use calcium and keep bones strong.
However, recent research suggests that vitamin D may have a much bigger role in the body. More of it
may be needed for other health benefits, such as those listed above. Some experts already are
recommending that daily intake of vitamin D be increased.
Increasing the vitamin D you get can be a challenge. If it weren't for the risk of skin cancer, spending more
time outdoors would be an obvious choice. However, many experts believe it's safer to adjust your diet.
Fish are a healthful source of vitamin D. A serving of salmon, for example, contains about 360 IU. But, few
other foods have much natural D. That's why some foods have been fortified with the vitamin - just check
the food label. Most people can meet current recommendations by eating foods that have vitamin D
added to them, such as:
Milk
Soy milk
Breakfast cereals
Orange juice
Yogurt
Margarine
If you're not getting enough vitamin D from your diet, you may need supplements. But, talk with your
doctor first. The Institute of Medicine currently recommends that adults take no more than 2,000 IU
per day
Sunlight: A good way to get vitamin D?
Some researchers say five to 30 minutes of sunlight at least twice a week without sunscreen is enough for
your skin to make all the vitamin D the body needs. But, time in the sun can raise your risk of skin cancer.
So, slather on the sunscreen. This will help protect you against skin cancer, although your skin may not be
able to make much vitamin D as a result. Then, get your D from fortified foods or supplements instead,
says Christine Gerbstadt, M.D., R.D., of the American Dietetic Association.
