Empathy is the ability to put oneself in the other person’s position, establish rapport, and anticipate the other’s reactions, feelings and behaviors.(Kerr and Speroff ,1954) Empathy is the act of constructing for oneself another’s mental state (Hogan ,1969).

Grief and Hogan (1973) identified even tempered disposition, social ascendancy, and humanistic sociopolitical attitudes as factors of empathy

Davis (1980) identified two facets of empathy which are cognitive and emotional .

Johnson, J.A., Cheek , J.M & Smither , R. (1983) based on the result of their study identified social self confidence, even-temperedness , sensitivity and non-conformity as components of empathy.

Chlopan et. Al. (1985) concluded that only two scales , the QMEE and Hogan’s EM scale have a number of studies supporting their validity and reliability but the 2 are measuring different aspects of empathy.

They further suggested for improvement of empathy scale researchers should consider together the QMEE and Hogan’s EM scale.

The present study To develop an instrument that will measure the multidimensional aspect of empathy of teachers.

This study tried to present a wholistic measure of empathy for teachers having dimensions with cognitive and affective components. In the present study we also examine whether the scale scores indeed demonstrate adequate internal consistency.

Factors used in the study

People high in sensitivity are described as compassionate, concerned about others, and moral.

Individuals high in conformity are someone who is conventional, follows prescribed rules, regulations and social norms

Persons high in social self-confidence are socially adept, assertive, confident, and perhaps little impulsive and overbearing.

High scorers at even-temperedness are described as likeable, agreeable, perspective takers, even tempered, good natured and cheerful.

Empathy Scale for Teacher is composed of three factors: Sensitivity, Nonconformity, and Social self confidence.

- Further validation thru convergent validity and confirmatory factor analysis.

- Look into the differences in levels of empathy between elementary, high school and college teachers.

- Research on the relation between empathy and the Filipino values - “pakikipagkapwa-tao” at “pakikisama”.
