OPTIMAL TREATMENTOF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES:SURGERY VS. INNOVATIVE TECHNIQUES

Final Program

July 2&3, 2012

Nobile Collegium Universitas Aromatariorum Urbis Rome, Italy

Program Director Prof. Luigi Chiariello,Rome, Italy

Over the past few years, more and more innovative and less invasive techniques have been introduced for treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Some of them have received an enthusiastic acceptance, not necessarily justified by clinical results. Simultaneously surgical techniques have been further refined, reaching surprisingly excellent results even in the very old population and in complex cases.

In the last decades of last century coronary angioplasty became widespread all over the world, generating the impression that bypass surgery may have shortly disappeared. However, the results of the latest Syntax Study have failed to demonstrate the “non-inferiority” of angioplasty vs. coronary bypass surgery in large numbers of patients.

Currently, the cardiovascular scene is dominated by the introduction in clinical practice of TAVI, mitral clip, aortic endoprostheses and hybrid procedures. There is no doubt that some of these costly procedures, or their evolutions, will find a place in the routine therapeutic armamentarium for at least some selected groups of patients. In most instances, however, not only their superiority, but even their “non-inferiority”over surgical alternatives still needs to be demonstrated.

The Italian College of Cardiac Surgeons intends to invite the cardiovascular community to the ongoing Expert Forum, as a way to bring into focus the best procedures for treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

The venue of the meeting will be inside the unique scenario of the Roman Imperial Forum. I hope you will enjoy your stay in a city rich in millennial vestigia as well as contemporary attractions.

I look forward to meeting you in Rome next July.

Program descriptionThe resulting scientific program represents a worldwide overview of the traditional surgical approach vs. innovative technical solutions for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, such as hybrid approach or less-invasive percutaneous therapies. While surgery continues to be the gold standard therapy for most patients, subsets of patients may benefit from less-invasive innovative therapeutic solutions.

Educational objectives- To present the current state -of-the-art of cardiac surgery- To learn the options and patients selection for TAVI and Mitral-Clip procedures- To update CABG vs. PCI results in Left Main-Multivessel Coronary Artery Disease- To learn the options and perspectives for endovascular vs. open treatment of aortic aneurysms- To discuss the current state of hybrid procedures for aortic, coronary and peripheral artery diseases- To learn the options for percutaneous vs. open surgery for treatment of congenital heart diseases

- To learn the possible advantages of a dedicated hybrid operating room- To define expanding costs of innovative techniques and their socio-economical implications
