Topic Controversial Issues: Death Penalty Student’s profile The following lessons will be applied to a group of 18 intermediate learners in the range of 17 to 23 years old. According to the Common European Framework, they have an B1 level. These students show different kind of abilities, and concerns about learning new topics that represent an interest for them. Even they manifest different learning styles like auditory and visual, they are always willing to participate with others and their attitude is generally positive. Most of the times, they prefer to work on unfamiliar and/or challenging tasks and this is the way they feel more confident and motivated when they are able to work in their areas of strength. These learners also need frequent opportunities to work in their preferred sensory and thinking styles. At the same time, it is also critical to ensure that students have satisfactory outcomes. However, if it is identified previously, a good lesson plan on this topic will provide them strategies that can help to improve their own areas of learning.

Description of the project The topic of this unit is “Controversial issues: death penalty”. This elicits students to know that controversial issues are problems or topics that can cause a lot of disagreement because people have strong personal opinions about them. Learning Objectives The main aim of this lesson has the purpose to provide the students learning strategies that can help them to discuss on controversial issues by using critical thinking, questioning and evaluation; discussing and justifying opinions and

values; contributing to group discussion and debate and presenting convincing arguments. They will also be organized in teams and those interaction patterns I have chosen will provide them to work more confident and use an analytical understanding.

The podcast will be divided in three episodes: Watch a video and discuss about its content. Who agrees and who

doesn’t. (audio) Interview a partner about the video (audio) Create a debate: For and against (audio)

Every episode is going to last from four to five minutes. The slogan is: Pro-life? Pro-war? Pro-death penalty? Hypocrite!

They will have a handout provided by the teacher where they will be able to make notes about what they watched (ver anexo 1) Then, they will recorder an audio file when showing their opinions on the case. Finally, they are going to upload their conversation in a youtube account or by using audio boom.
