Final Report

Title: Status of alternative art spaces in 9 Southeast Asian countries

For this fellowship, I spent 3 months researching alternative art spaces in 9 Southeast Asian

countries. I traveled to the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Singapore, Malaysia,

Vietnam, and Cambodia, where I visited 82 spaces and surveyed their activities, while

simultaneously introducing the Japanese alternative art scene, including the Art Center Ongoing

which I operate in Tokyo. In the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam, I not

only conducted research, but invited local people involved in art to hold talk shows and symposiums.

In Chiang Mai, Thailand I also held a joint exhibit with Japanese artists and local artists.

I introduced the spaces that I researched on my blog, and touched on the activities of all the spaces

there. In understanding the current state of alternative art spaces in these 9 Southeast Asian

countries, I am proud that the content of this blog has the newest and most detailed content of

existing databases, and I will use that content here to make my final report.
