First of all, this report is dedicated to ALLAH

Almighty without whose help and mercy,

    Everything was impossible.

    Secondly, this report is dedicated

to my parents who introduced me to the

    joy of reading from birth,

enabling such a study to take place today

and who have never failed to give me

    financial and moral support.

    Community s erv ic e is a d onat ed s erv ic e o r acti v ity

    which is p er fo r m ed by som e on e o r a g r oup of p e opl e fo r

    th e b e n e fit of th e public o r its institutions.

Some people associate community service with punishment, since it is often offeredto small-time offenders as an alternative to fines or jail time. However, communityservice can also be altruistic, and it is a vital part of many small communities. Gettinginvolved in your community makes it healthier and livelier, and numerousorganizations around the world support community service activities.

Some people engage in community service out of a desire to connect with their communities by helping out. For people who are new to a community, community

service can be a great way to learn more about the place in which they live and thepeople they live with. Community service may also be required for things like highschool g r a d uation or membership in an organization, in which case the school or organization often helps to organize community service opportunities.

Things which could be considered community service include tutoring children, building homes in low income areas, assisting the elderly, socializing animals atanimal shelters, being a museum docent, performing habitat restoration, contributingto the operations of volunteer fire departments and emergency services, or helpingwith civic beautification. In all cases, community service work is performed byvolunteers who are not paid for their time. In some instances, the work would not beaccomplished without the work of such volunteers, and many small organizationsrely on people with community spirit to survive.

Many people engage in community service because they believe that it carriesrewards beyond the obvious and tangible. Clearly, engaging in things likeenvironmental restoration and civic beautification will make your life enjoyable bymaking the world around you more pleasant. But community service can also help toensure that important services like meals for the elderly and volunteer fire

departments continue to run. It also helps to build a rich and supportive communityof people who know each other and lend each other a hand when it is needed.

However, it is not necessary that everyone who provides community service is seenas a volunteer, because some people who provide community service are not doingit of their own free will; they are compelled to do so by:

y Their government as a part of citizenship requirements, in lieu of militaryservice

y The courts, in lieu of, or in addition to, other criminal justice sanctionsy Their school, to meet the requirements of a class, such as in the case of

service learning or to meet the requirements of graduationy Their parents will, required to provide a certain number of hours of service in

order for their child to be enrolled in a school or sports team.

Community service performed by youth is also referred to as youth service. Youthservice is intended to strengthen young peoples' senses of civic engagement andcommunity, and to help them achieve their educational, developmental and socialgoals.

Though technically not a requirement, many colleges make community service anunofficial requirement for acceptance. However, some colleges prefer workexperience over community service, and some require that their students alsocontinue community service for some specific number of hours to graduate. Certainacademic honour societies such as De lta Epsilon Sigma have rejected 4.0 GPA students that lacked community service experiences on their applications, becausethey honour community service so much.

The aims and objectives of doing community service include:

y Helping those who are less fortunate keeps you from being a spoiled, self-centered and uneducated person.

y It increases students' personal, interpersonal and social development.y It increases motivation, student engagement, and school attendance.y It leads to new perspectives and more "positive lifestyle choices and

    behaviour."

y It contributes to decreased psychological distress and buffers the negativeconsequences of stressors; it increases life satisfaction and decreasesdepression.

y It is related to longer life spans and improved mental health.y It can also leads to increased care for others and a desire to cooperate

and get involved in positive ways, even among those who had previouslyexhibited antisocial tendencies.

y It also boosts the feelings of social connectedness that appears to bewaning in our increasingly segmented society.

y In individuals, It develops a keener appreciation for civic affairs and makethem able to understand more completely their obligations to participate inthe political process. Indeed, people learn about the politics of their civicsystems by experiencing and observing the effects of the policies on their communities.

Some example projects given to a person, doing community service may include:

y Cleaning a park.y Collecting items for charity such as clothes, food, or furniture.y Cleaning roadside verges.y Helping the elderly in nursing homes.y Helping the local fire or police service.y Helping out at a local library.y Tutoring children with le a r ning d isabiliti e s .

It was a very articulate learning experience. From the very firstday, when the first foot was set inside the hospital everything gave

a new experience and a new understanding of the world. Thenature of work given to each and every student required a lot of patience. I was required to sit in the medical social services room.

All the poor and deserving patients come there to fill certain formsthat they are required to submit in bait-ul-Mall office.

Then, bait-ul-Mall assists them with money which they submit inthe hospital and enjoy free medical check-up or test or operation.

As, 90% of the patients coming there were illiterate as they had nomoney to get themselves educated, so, they are unable to fill-up

those forms up to the requirements of the hospital as well as Bait-ul-Mall.

So, there comes my community service. I had to ask them certainquestions mentioned in their forms like who is the bread owner of

By the blessing of Allah Almighty, It was a very prolific and articulate experience

working there and there is no doubt in saying that I learned a lot and gained a lot of

experience and understanding of the outer world from this community service

program. Everyone was very cooperative and helping, we hardly faced any problemwhile working there but I would also like to give some suggestions that are:

If it is possible transport facility should be provided to the students.

The meeting of the internal and external supervisor with students should be

    conducted every week.

There should be strict check and inspection on the working of the students by

the medical social officer. He/she should visit at least once daily.

The work given to us was very limited. More assignments should be given tothe students.

Photocopy of the forms should be arranged from the hospital funds and a

clerk should be arranged for this purpose as it is not possible for every patient

coming there to get the forms photocopied.

There should be proper communication among students and medical social

    officer.

Bait-ul-Mall forms should be submitted in Jinnah Hospital and hospital should

arrange for the delivery of the forms in Bait-ul-Mall office as it is impossible for

every patient to go there. Some patients do not have anyone with them to go

to bait-ul-mall office to submit the forms.

The process of filling the forms should be precise and simple.

Annual reports should be kept in the library so that the students may consult

them at time of their need.

There is a common saying that "you learn something new every day." This definitelyholds true for community service. With each new experience, old skills aredeveloped as new ones are learned. New information is integrated with pastexperience, and ones knowledge base grows.

Additionally, the lessons learnt from community service support and enrichunderstandings of how our community is set up to function. Furthermore, this

program gave me a vested interest in my community and changed my perspective of how things are viewed. At the same time, i have learnt a lot by conversing withthose, whom i helped or worked with, as i have encountered new points of view. Assaid:

"Ide als of de moc r atic lif e cannot e ncompass all m e mb er s of th e national community until p e opl e of d iff ere nt t r a d itions

    list e n to th e voic e s of oth er s."

By talking with people of different ideas and opinions and different way of thinking, i

have gained communication skills. Having face to face interaction and talking with aperson having less tolerance level and non-cooperative at the same time made megain good communication skills and made me polite and increased my tolerance andconfidence level.

I was given the opportunities and responsibilities of decision making that wasinteresting and important to me, and I tend to think more deeply about the issues athand and used my most complex thinking skills. I have also learnt team-buildingskills while working with other students coming there. I have become more active asa citizen and i have found a new sense of purpose and a sense of caring for thepeople around me.

At the same time, this program has enhanced my overall morale. I have gained areal life experience and i am able to think about the important things in my life. Thisprogram kept my busy and active; it gave me a sense of being needed and valuedfor my contributions while keeping me mentally and physically active. There is nodoubt in saying that it has increased my mental health and life satisfaction.
