    Thanksgiving Holiday Project

    1. Thanksgiving in America tends to celebrate the cooperation of Native American tribes andreligious Pilgrims from England and the Netherlands settling in modern day Massachusetts.

How does geography shape this story?

The pilgrims left England because of religious persecution. They came to America because theywanted religious freedom. This ties to geography because pilgrims migrated in the search of

    religious freedom.

    2. Given the course of events since that first Thanksgiving meal in the 1620s, how do you thinkdifferent Americans celebrate or perceive the Thanksgiving holiday today? Be sure to note the

role of geography in shaping different interpretations of the meaning of the celebration.

Some truly American foods are: turkey, venison and corn. These foods are native to the North

American Continent. Also, history books teach that the early settler s ate these foods.

    3. What types of food are truly American? Give evidence for your response. Some people perceive Thanksgiving as a religious holiday. They think of it as a holiday to thank

God and Jesus for all that they have. Some people think of Thanksgiving as a day to just bethankful for everything that they have. Then, there are some people who think of the holiday as

a time that they get off from work and get to eat as much as they can. A way geography can tie

into this, is the fact that the South is very, very religious. Therefore, most people in the South

might use Thanksgiving as a day to celebrate God and their religion.

    4. As those early, cold, starving Pilgrims must have thought, food production requires a great dealmore than we typically think. Time, money, and resources are used in producing single items on

a plate, let alone a full meal. Based on your documentation, choose ONE item on your plate to

    research, answering the following questions.

    Squash Casserole:

    A. How much to the ingredients for this dish cost? Ask a family member for anestimate, or get a list of ingredients and look online or in a local grocery store.

    $6.00

    B. How long does this dish take to prepare and cook?45 minutes

    C. In what season do these ingredients typically grow/are harvested? For example, tomatoes are often summer crops, but kale or leaks grow better in the autumn or

    early spring.

    Squash grows in the summer.

    D. Not everything grows in South Carolina. Where do these ingredients come from? Beas specific as possible (Southern California, Asheville, North Carolina). Check the

    packaging or investigate online.

Squash can be grown in South Carolina.

    E. Given the cost of gasoline, figure the approximate cost of fuel used to move theingredients you chose to research to your location.

The squash was grown in my yard. The cost of seeds from Lowes is about $2. It is 30

miles from my house to Lowes and back. Our truck gets about 15 m/g. In total, it

    cost about $9.

    5. What does thankfulness mean to you and your family? How does this reflect your familysculture (religion, history, fashion, traditions, social organization, etc.)? How does geography

    shape your perception of thankfulness?

Thankfulness means showing appreciation for what you have. It reflects on our religion because

we thank God and Jesus for what they have given us. In the South, people are very religious. So

many people in the south use Thanksgiving as a time to thank God. That is how geography has

    shaped my perception of thankfulness.

    6. Based on your previous answers, and any additional research h, what is the environmentalimpact of Thanksgiving? Give specific examples.

Thanksgiving can have a bad effect on the environment. All the vehicles that are transporting allthis food is polluting the environment, chemical runoff from turkey processing planes, waste

    generated, etc.
