Ocean Acidifica+on vs. West Coast Shellfish Fisheries Se8ng the Context for this Workshop
Why fishermen (should) care about OA
Evidence of acidified waters in 2007
Coincidental recruitment decline in wild fisheries, i.e. sea urchins
West Coast shellfish are important to coastal communi+es as well as the ecosystem
This talk highlights key shellfish fisheries on the west coast
And what we hope this workshop will accomplish
Washington State Recrea+onal razor clam fishery
54 miles of razor clam habitat – divided into 5 management beaches.
A typical recreaFonal razor clam opener has as many as 20,000 and up to 30,000 diggers out on a single day.
The Quinault Indian NaFon has treaty rights to 50% of the harvestable clams on 3 of the 5 management beaches (those north of Grays Harbor).

Shellfish Fisheries: Important to Economy of harbor communiFes and States
• Provide jobs, food
• Support harbor infrastructure, coastal business economy
Shellfish Resources: Also important for CA Current Ecosystem slide borrowed from Feely presentaFon to CINMS SAC
Shellfish Resources: Also important for CA Current Ecosystem slide borrowed from Feely presentaFon to CINMS SAC
Managing fishery resources: Need to understand variables
• Recruitment, growth, mortality and now ??
• pH changes will challenge managers to understand and incorporate new variables
• Unlike aquaculture, wild harvesters can not modify the ocean environment
• We need to learn how to adapt • First, we need to link biological processes to oceanographic measurements so we can forecast
We hope this workshop is the first step to a coast-‐wide monitoring system
• Baseline data are now lacking in regions where CaCO3 satura+on is expected to decrease
