• A dissertation or thesis is a document submitted in support of candidature for an academic degree or professional qualification presenting the author’s research and findings.

What is a Thesis?

• A thesis makes an original contribution to knowledge through research, puts forward a clear & consistent argument, & convinces the reader of its validity through logic, analysis & evidence.

1.1 Background

• State the general field of interest in one or two paragraphs

• End with a sentence that states what study will accomplish.

• Do not keep the reader waiting to find out the precise subject of the thesis.

1.2 Problem Statement

• This section is a brief of the major findings in the field of interest that cites the most current finding in the subject area.

• A minimum of two to three citations to the literature per paragraph is advisable.

• The paragraphs must be a summary of unresolved issue, conflicting findings, social concerns, or educational, national, or international issues.

1.3 Project/Research Questions

• The primary research question is the basis for data collection.

• There may be one, or there may be several.

• When the research is finished, the contribution to the knowledge will be the answer to these questions.

1.4 Objectives

• The actions/missions that need to be done to achieve the aim of the project.

1.5 Scope

• The extent of the study and contains measurements.

1.6 Significance of the Project

• Mainly focus on the question: “Who will benefit from the study?”

• State the contribution of your project and the usefulness of your project in the society.

1.7 Organization of the Thesis

• Optional.

• Briefly explain the overall structure of your thesis starting from Chapter “Introduction” to Chapter “Conclusion”.
